2015 Free Agency — Day 1

VIDEO: Kevin Love returns to Cleveland

From NBA.com staff reports

Last night’s opener to the free agency season in the NBA was like many more before it — some initial movement, a couple of re-signings here and there and, for the most part, a formal starting of the rumor mill.

The biggest moves last night were by one player who wasn’t even on the free-agent market this summer (Anthony Davis) and another who wasn’t expected to go far from his home team (Kawhi Leonard). Both players reportedly agreed to deals with their current teams — the New Orleans Pelicans and San Antonio Spurs, respectively — and earned big paydays to boot.

Davis reportedly agreed to a five-year, $145 million maximum contract while Leonard got a reported five-year, $90 million deal. The Portland Trail Blazers also reached a reported four-year, $30 million deal with free-agent forward Al-Farouq Aminu. Aside from those moves, the Brooklyn Nets are finalizing deals with Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young while the Pacers are hot on the trail of Monta Ellis.

As we dig into Day 1 of free agency, keep up on all the latest buzz below …

Report: Warriors reach $85 million deal with Green– 10:59 p.m.

There had been smoke, with reports earlier in the day that contract talks between Draymond Green’s representatives and the Golden State Warriors had “broken off.” But shortly after dinner time in the Bay Area, the only fire was the green stuff that soon will be burning a hole in the versatile restricted free-agent’s pockets:

West says goodbye, talks Pacers — 9:51 p.m.

A team with championship aspirations, some need at power forward, at least the mid-level exception (or more) available to spend and a desire for one of the NBA’s best leaders and true grown-ups could do worse than David West. West said his farewell to Pacers fans on social media and had some candid remarks about Indiana, his plans now and that goofy Knicks rumor.

Shumpert re-ups to boost Cavs’ payroll — 8:08 p.m.

Knicks, Bucks pursue Robin Lopez — 6:28 p.m.

Shane, er, LaMarcus, come back! — 6:15 p.m.

Having taken care of his own business — Portland point guard Damian Lillard reportedly was close to an agreement with the Blazers on a five-year, $120 million extension — Lillard put out a plea for his power-forward buddy:

Shumpert to seek worth in market? — 6:04 p.m.

Mavs up next in Aldridge pursuit — 5:49 p.m.

No Aldridge for the Lakers — 4:38 p.m.

With DeMarre Carroll looking like a potential power forward in Toronto, the guy that has started at PF for the Raptors for the last five years is heading out of town.

The Celtics are also keeping another power forward…

Draymond available? — 3:18 p.m.

It’s been assumed that Draymond Green‘s return to Golden State was inevitable, but Yahoo’s Marc Spears reports that initial talks between Green and the Warriors didn’t result in a deal.

The Golden State Warriors and restricted free-agent forward Draymond Green have broken off contract talks, a source told Yahoo Sports on Wednesday.

The Warriors met with Green and agent B.J. Armstrong in Los Angeles after 12:01 a.m. ET on Tuesday when NBA free agents could first begin negotiating with teams, a source told Yahoo Sports. The Warriors were given the first opportunity to reach a contract agreement before Green considered talking with other teams. But with the breakdown in talks, Green is now open to meeting with other franchises immediately, the source said.

Green is a restricted free agent, so the Warriors could allow Green to find a deal elsewhere and just match it.

Chandler to Phoenix — 3:15 p.m.

Suns keep Knight — 2:49 p.m.

It was reported a few days ago that the Suns would be giving (restricted free agent) Brandon Knight $70 million to stay in Phoenix for five years, a move which has come to fruition.

Cavs bringing back Love and Thompson — 2:31 p.m.

Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson play the same position, but the Cavs will have both back at the Q next season. Love made his intentions known via a post at the Player’s Tribune …

Yeah, of course I’ve heard the free agency rumors. But at the end of the day, and after meeting with my teammates (it turns out pools are great meeting places) and with the front office, it was clear Cleveland was the place for me. We’re all on the same page and we’re all in. We have unfinished business and now it’s time to get back to work.

Thompson’s return was the more expected move…

And now the Cavs skyrocket into luxury tax territory.

Butler staying in Chicago — 2:25 p.m.

Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski has the latest on Jimmy Butler and the Bulls

Jimmy Butler is finalizing a five-year, $95 million maximum contract to re-sign with the Chicago Bulls, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

Butler’s deal will include a player option after the fourth year of the deal, sources told Yahoo.

Teams pursuing Butler with offer sheet proposals have conceded and moved on, league sources said. Butler was a restricted free agent, and Chicago could’ve matched an offer sheet and retained him.

Middleton remains a Buck — 2:16 p.m.

Ajinca re-ups with the Pels — 1:59 p.m.

The Pelicans are bringing back their back-up center. Starting center Omer Asik is also a free agent, and it remains to be seen if they bring him back, if they go for someone else, or if they plan on moving Anthony Davis to the five.

Matthews in demand — 1:50 p.m.

Wes Matthews tore his Achilles in early March, and it’s not clear if he’d be healthy by November. But it was clear how much the Blazers missed him down the stretch of this past season, and he’s still drawing interest from around the league.

Wade looking for the max — 1:11 p.m.

From Adrian Wojnarowski’s report on Goran Dragic‘s new contract

Now, the Heat turn their full attention to re-signing free-agent guard Dwyane Wade.

Wade is pursuing a max contract with the Heat, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

A max deal for Wade would start at about $22 million.

  1. John Windsor says:

i think the bulls are doing great in re-signing butler and Dunleavy great deals and i hope we can have an explosive year like the warriors with are new head coach GO BULLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. "real"NBA fan not 4 kids says:

i think the Lakers should keep ed davis and jordan hill if they cant get a good center or power foward our front line will be gone soon. they also are letting jeremy lin go? he attacks the basket almost every single time down the floor opening up shots for every guy out there. why let him go so easily? and wes johnson is a lockdown defensive defender we should keep him and get rid of robert sacre ronnie pierce carlos boozer but if you get rid of the guys who actualyl contribute and keep the guys who dont put up good numbers our team will be another junky team again this year. cmon LA get it straight!

  3. David says:

It is like playing with monopoly money for these guys today. 16 mil a year for 8.5 points and 8 rebounds a game. That was Kevin Love’s previous salary while averaging 25 and 12

  4. Yutio says:

Am I the only one thinking that most these players aren’t worth half the money they are getting skill wise?

  5. geo nowitzki says:

Al faruqu making 30 million blazers smoking that Bill walton

  6. Jay J. says:

C’mon guys…say what you will about Kobe, but the guy is a winner and works his butt off to achieve. He is a stickler for wanting others to hone their skills to get better. As far as work ethnic goes, there are 3 guys you can group Kobe with: “Sweetness”…Walter Payton, Jerry Rice and “Air” Jordan. All are champions. So, don’t jump on the hater band wagon and condone those who think they can win on talent alone.

  7. ryan of the Philippines says:

Lamarcus Aldridge should sign with the Dallas Mavericks. They will be an instant title contender together with Dirk Nowitzki, Chandler Parsons, De Andre Jordan and Brandan Knight. They will surely be a force to reckon with in the whole NBA. They will surely dominate and they can have a better chemistry too on and off the court..I can sense that.

  8. K-Dash says:

He and Kobe didn’t quite gel. It’s a little vague, but Aldridge apparently didn’t quite get answers from Kobe he was seeking.

LOL, why wasn’t i surprise noone wants to play with Cookie.

  9. asdfrank says:

I don’t get why AD signed an extension now…why not wait til next year to sign and get more money? Surely you are going to get even better and baring career ending injury, you would still get a max contract…just on a higher salary cap.

  10. Jeremiah says:

now pelicans get chandler and knight from suns. trade asik and gordon..

  11. Nirvana G says:

The Lakers keep swinging for the fences trying to land tha A-list free agent. They all want a legit shot at the championship today, which the Lakers are not. Their focus should have been on Greg Monroe all along. That bro is a beast, he’s young & can run the floor. His upside is tremendous. They should have brought him in like the Raptors did Demarre Carroll, & make him an offer he can’t refuse, cancel the rest of his visits & sign on the spot.

  12. New Jersey Nets says:

WOW everyone is getting paid, feel bad for all the former NBA players who deserved this kind of money in the past.

  13. Jeremiah says:

    lakers get lou wiliams,tobias, lopez

  14. Jeremiah says:

lakers don’t trade russel, randle and clarkson for cousins. trade randle and clarkson for okafor

  15. Jeremiah says:

good move for the clips. now get jordan and maintain the ‘lob city’ figure.

management please help davis. trade gordon and asik for knight and chandler.

worst decisions being made by blazers

  16. Jeremiah says:

the lakers are done. they should have tried tyson chandler and tobias harris. get monroe, try to revive rondo.trade randle and clarkson for okafor

  17. Harton says:

First Marc Gasol now LaMarcus Aldridge. No one wants to play with Kobe. Good thing he doesn’t need friends because he doesn’t have any.

  18. harriethehawk says:

The Fakers and Knickerbonkers are having a difficult time rounding up a team. And I’m still boggled that we couldn’t retain Demarrre Carroll. Let’s Go Hawks!!!!!!

  19. robb says:

i see a lot of players paid too much for what they are, ignoring the skill hierarchy and suddenly this is the norm, “give that cash to that guy, because the other guy had it too”. smh, when all the role players will be paid at the max, what will you give to the legit max players ?

  22. Kobe@Manila says:

I agree.. Aldridge will sign with the Lakers.. and one Center please..

  23. RonHawk says:

“Originally scheduled to meet with LaMarcus Aldridge tomorrow, the Mavs are making their pitch today, league source says.”

I can only guess that’s because Aldrdge’s meeting with the Spurs went so well the Mavs know they’d better rush or else Pop’s pitch will have overpowered Aldrige.

  24. philestena McLeod says:

Wow what a day, what next!

  25. lbj says:

If all these FA and UFA wants to get a ring they all need to play with our “king” LeBron in Cleveland. We will trade James Jones, Joe Harris and Shawn Marion for D-Wade, Lamarcus Aldridge and Stephen Curry plus future first round picks. LeBron will get back in 2016 season for their 1st ring and 3rd for our “king” LeBron

    • "real"NBA fan not 4 kids says:

you already have kevin love and kyrie irving and now you want stephen curry dwade and lamarcus alridge? what do you need to win a championship the NBA all star team? lol lebron is such a loser. do it your own and stop choking already lebron. wannabe Michael Jordan…..

      • Seriously that was an absurdly ridiculous post….Steph, D-Wade AND Aldridge to a team that ALREADY has three All-Stars?! It may be entertaining to read, but some of these LeBron fanboys are just completely out of their minds, and have NO knowledge of real life basketball dealings. LMAO.

  26. Greg M says:

LA is 30 years old. Maybe two years left in his prime.

Tony Parker is 33 and has lost a step, or two

Manu will be 38 next month, looks older and not much left in tank.

Tim Duncan will be 40 before playoffs. I’m calling it: he is washed up.

    Kawhi is not a leader.

    Now or never.

  27. Flexy says:

Wade, I think its time to leave Miami. You’ve given us the best years of your life, however they made a very wrong desicion by making Bosch the face of the franchise. The front office obviously doesn’t respect you any more, and as much as it pains me to say this I think you should make the “desicion part 3” join Lebron and contend for another chance at the title.

  28. b7m says:

looks like Lakers will get another high draft pick next summer

    • "real"NBA fan not 4 kids says:

too many people hating on Kobe and my Lakers. they need to worry about there own teams and players and keeping there own players happy so my team doesnt lure them out. just stop Laker hatin already im tired of hearin you little girls complain LA this LA that. stop sweating my team already i know we have 16 NBA championships and 5 are Kobe’s but get off the hate bandwagon already. the Lakers are coming back people get over yourself. its going to happen whether you like it or not.

  29. RonHawk says:

Jim Buss, the best move you can make for the Lakers is to fire yourself. Nobody wants to come close to the Lakers because of the disastrous effect you have had on this team for so long.

  30. Unkaned says:

Poor, poor Lakers. Guessing great players still think Jimbo is in control, don’t wanna have to deal with Kobe, and are moving on. This means that Lakers won’t be good enough this year to get the building blocks they’ll be able to afford next year, since there won’t be enough there for any two great players to turn into a contender. Too bad. Ye makes yer mistake and ye pays for them.

  31. stephen says:

The Lillard contract will be the death of the trailblazers, losing LA is one thing, but 120 million over 5 years is ridiculous, he should have got something more like 100 million, and allow portlands gm to actually have enough to keep the team in playoff contention

LA is gone for the spurs, wade stays in miami, love in Cleveland,

  32. Damien H says:

    In your dreams William

  33. Fug says:

DeRozen recruiting is interesting talk, but it appears he is recruiting players to join him on another team not Raptors this season.

He is going to be a Pelican.

  34. KingdomMan says:

Sad to see you go Tiago, you served us well. But you got your ring and a big contract and you’re going to a 60 win team in the east. Just waiting for Aldrige to hook up with us!!! Go spurs go!!!!!

  35. Pamela Fairbanks says:

Well, looks like we lost another one in Aldridge. I think Kevin Love would be a great fit for Lakers but he won’t sign either.

  36. William says:

The L.A Lakers will pick up Lamarcus Aldridge AND Deandre Jordan!
    BOOK IT!!!!
    Pg:Rajon Rondo, russel
    sf.Nick young
    pf- Lamarcus, Randle
    center- Jordan

  37. I think Monroe is the only guy the Knicks are going to get. Nobody else wants to play with Melo, and I don’t blame them at all. Melo needs to shut his mouth and focus on winning basketball games: http://straighthoops.com/just_shut_up.html

  38. jake s. says:

During dinner they probably didn’t talk contracts with Dj and Wes. I’m sure they just talked about golf and Caitlyn Jenner…
