Kobe And Pau … A Package Deal!

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – While it’s far from official and certainly not anything you should bet the mortgage on, there’s a certain big man from Spain who should rest a little easier today.

And no one should question Kobe Bryant‘s dedication to his Los Angeles Lakers teammate Pau Gasol.

Bryant reaffirmed his faith in and commitment to Gasol to reporters in Barcelona today when he responded this way to a question from a local reporter about Gasol’s status with the Lakers, per our main man Brian C. Mahoney of the Associated Press:

“As long as I’m there, he’s going to be there.”

That’s 10 more words than the Lakers’ brass will give you (publicly) in support of Gasol, who (if you believe the rumors) has been on the trading block non-stop since the past two seasons.

Bryant has come to Gasol’s defense before, railing against management for not protecting him early last season on a road trip to Phoenix. So to hear that he did it in Gasol’s backyard on the eve of an exhibition game between the U.S. Men’s Senior National team and Gasol’s Spanish team is not surprising.

The language used, however, is as strong as anything we’ve heard from Bryant regarding Gasol. With Steve Nash in the fold and the continued speculation surrounding the Lakers’ pursuit of Dwight Howard, Gasol has every right to be concerned about his standing in the organization.

Andrew Bynum has been mentioned much more prominently in the trade rumors, but that doesn’t mean Gasol is safe from the chatter. A strong vote of confidence from Bryant, though, should carry some sort of weight with the Lakers.

The lakes can only improve offensively from where they were at last year with the addition of Nash and Jamison. Championships come down to a combinationof O and d, with the right coaching of course. With Dwight we no he will bring defense, along with an ego and a me mentality that no team needs… I personally hope the lakers keep Bynum and gamble on him being able to consistently maintain his defense along with his offensive domination like he did in his triple double game against the nuggets last offseason. Nash will not improve the the defensive trouble but he will dramtically increase the offensive end of the floor for everyone! He simply makes players arpund him better. The championship will come down to the right coaching and matchups on defense for each team we vs in the playoffs… and hopefully the offense will flow.

  2. nazukie says:

let’s embrace bynum and pau. and forget the loser center in orlando. we just need to improve our bench. we can get leandro barbosa!!! let’s go lakers let’s go! 6th ring for kobe. and MVP award. :))

  3. lakersfan says:

people what western conference series were you watching? 2 of the OKC losses for the lakers were by last minute points so defense and offense are not issues some games you just don’t win. As far as saying adding jamison and Nash don’t give the Lakers a push all of you are wrong… Nash slows games down because you have to persue him if you don’t he kills your defense…… PHX problem in the playoffs was lack of talent around him he doesn’t have that issue anymore….. If ANY of you think Nash isn’t good enough to change 3 points in a game you don’t know anything about basketball..

  4. Los Angelean says:

No one seems to realise the reason why Pau was sub par last year is because of their retarded head coach Mike Brown. If the Lakers need to trade anyone, its Brown and his superstar concentrated, individually orientated offence. Everyone becomes retarded after playing under Mike Brown, except the superstar.

    • Go4Gold says:

I agree… They should restructure there offence again to revolve more of a hybrid triangle and pick n roll. This is where Gasul is better (or Bynum for that matter). This is where Nash will fit in also running the offence.

Regarding defence I believe LAL will still be a contender. Nash will not have to defend the like of CP3/RW/TP,etc. because Meta+Kobe+Barnes is there to switch and help. I see them going to top the West.

Lakers have one of the best if not the best starting five. they have plenty of offense in kobe, gasol, nash and bynum, the problem is that nash dont fill there defensive hole. he can now open more shots for kobe and excel in the pick and roll plays with bynum or gasol. the lakers problem is their bench. they need someone to back up kobe cause he is not getting any younger. the lakers had an okay offseason. they focused more on the point guard problem that there bench problem. there is still a couple more free agents left. the lakers should let half of that inconsistant bench and start signing players to help kobe and nash get some rest not worrying about dwight.

  7. bjohn says:

Lakers are definitely one of the most talented and imposing teams in the NBA this coming season. Its now up to them to come together as a team and make it happen. There are very few teams that will want to meet them in the playoffs because I think this season is going to be a big one for them.

    • kicka$$ says:

with Bynum, Pau, MWP, Kobe & Nash is already an ALL STAR line-up you don’t need to add a Drama Queen Diva Howard.. with a solid bench front court with Jamison and Hill all you need is to add a solid reserve guard that can run plays while nash rest.. i think Fisher is again available! or you may look at Delonte West or Nate Robinson for the 3′s!

  8. Jimmy says:

Nash played 6 yrs with the Mavs. Right after he left, the Mavs went to the Finals. When Nash went to Phoenix, he had better weapons around him than when he was in Dallas. 8 yrs later, still no Finals. Now older, slower, and still play no defense, what makes you Lakers fans think he’ll take you to the Finals?

The best thing to do here is wait for the things to happen. Im happy on the current Lakers roster right now. But as the fact stated, they lack in bench support.

  11. BynumSupporter@Manila says:

Gilbert Arenas/Michael Redd is available.. One of this will be great addition.. They want to have a ring and they are not that expensive.. Calling LA Management..

  12. Complain Camplain says:

Stop it Lakers Baby. if you all had this team you still would be unhappy.
    Starting 5.
    PG- CP3 Chris Paul
    SG- KB24 Kobe
    SF- KD Durant
    PF- LBJ Labron
    C – DH. Dwight
Bench – Nash ,Ginobili, Deng, Pau, Bynum, Tyson chandler, Paul Pierce, Ray,

  13. Ant says:

All they need now is to somehow acquire Brandon Rush.

Is it just me or is Kobe’s career mimicking Christopher Nolan’s Dark knight trilogy?
In 2005, he was at the top, a real game changer and making a mark of himself as bona fide superstar.
By 2008, he had reached the pinnacle of his career by leading his team to the greatest stage. Although there were some major challenges, he was able to defeat his opponents with the help of a new teammate who was strong enough to hold his own.
Now 2012, in the last part of his career, Kobe has become older and you can see it in his game. It would seem the Lakers have someone to take the reigns from Kobe once he decides to hang up his jersey, which he has hinted at doing after his current contract expires. With a few new extra parts and new allies, will he be able to overcome his greatest challenge yet?

  16. Lakers need Dwight says:

Pau and Bynum will crowd the paint which means Nash won’t be able to operate. What lakers need is three point shooters and athletic people which would compliment Nash. As Of Right Now Lakers Are A Mess!

If somehow Lakers can get Gibson, Deng and Dwight with Kobe and Nash this Line up would be Great!
    PG:Nash
    SG:Kobe
    SF:deng
    PF:Pau
    C:Dwight

      Umm…yeah…

Because Chicago are going to trade Deng for what..MWP? Give me a break…I’m a Boston fan and I wouldn’t even give up Marquis Daniels or Keyon Dooling for that lunatic.

Amare isn’t in the same league as Pau talent wise – not even close.
No way Mitch makes that deal.

  19. BynumSupporter@Manila says:

NO TRADE!!! That’s the voice of LA!! It’s enough.. Just get a deeper bench and a pure perimeter shooter where Nash can dish off at 3 or in the perimeter.. LA will take back the Western Championship from OT!!

  20. specialfriedrice says:

Reports, Knicks and Lakers, looking at Pau for Amaree, pretty much a straight swap!

    • Al says:

are you kidding me?? Overrated Amare is nowhere as good as Pau. Gasol is longer, a better shooter (overall a better scorer). Neither can defend, but Pau has the length advantage.

  21. MGIC CORE says:

I KNOW THIS BLOG IS ABOUT PAU GASOL , KOBE AND THE LAKERS, BUT AS A MAGIC FAN i’M IMPRESS THAT ALL THE REST OF THE LEAGUE ARE MAKING DIFFERENT TRADES . I LOOK HOW THE MAGIC DOING AND OTHER THAT THEY GET RID OF RYAN ANDERSON IN EXCHANGE FOR A MEDIOCRE PLAYER THEY HAVEN’t DO ANYTTHING ELSE. I DON’T KNOW IF THE HOWARD SITUATION IS TAKING OUT ALL MAGIC ENERGY THAT THEY HAVEN’T MADE ANY PROGRESS . I DON’T KNOW IF THE NEW MG HAVE ANY PROBATION TIME AS A NEW EMPLOYEE, BUT I THINK HE IS A VERY SLOW DECISION MAKER (THEY CALL IT PATIENT) BUT HE IS AS INMATURE AS DWIGHT HOWARD.SO WE CAN SEE TWO KINDS FOOLING AROUND . !!! MORE RESPECT TO THE CITY OF ORLANDO!!!
OK? OK. P.S. I THINK THIS NEW GM IS NOT AS GOOD AS AS THE TV COMENTATORS SAID.

  22. JBetancourt528 says:

Before that mention Metta World Peace, he does his job is to try to contain the opposing team’s offensive players. His offensive performance of Phil Jackson’s fault that he denied the ball for two seasons in spite of averaging 20 pts per game with Houston this season before signing with the Lakers. Pardon my English

  23. JBetancourt528 says:

The Lakers have to stay with Pau and it is essential to do so with the arrival of Nash and the team must negotiate with Andrew Bynum for Dwight Howard. The age difference between them is not so unequal, but the consistency on the court and health if it is. Please do not tell me you have not seen Bynum limping while running. Who prefer a player that all in the field or a player who is afraid of being struck off the court?

  24. connor says:

even if the lakers don’t howard look at there team still nash, kobe, gasol, and bynum if you still want to count gasol thats a big 4 and that big 4 will be unstoppable. They can grab rebounds all day something the heat can’t do without a center.

    • yea the heat can’t rebound they just have Lebron And Bosh who both averaged double doubles with points and rebounds stfu besides Lebron+Wade+Bosh+Allen= the real big four

  25. Just Be says:

The Lakers should just get Superman and stop worrying about the $$$……

  26. digitioli says:

Pau, Bynum, Kobe, MWP, and everyone who plays with him will be better with Nash, who can not only handle the ball and dish, he can knock down the 3 and attack the rim. Nash will keep everybody happy on offense and exploit whatever the defense gives him – he’ll be a kid in a candy store with all of that talent around him. Everyone will get better shots and be more efficient, especially Kobe, which is exactly what will make them measurably better. The Lakers had way too many turnovers and low percentage shots without a real point guard. With Jamison and Hill coming off the bench and a training camp to get their system in place, and a defensive state of mind, the Lakers don’t need howard the coward and are much better off without his drama – they’ve got winning to do! Nash will help Bynum get over the hump to become a more mature, motivated star on both ends of the court.

  27. Jimmy Lakers says:

Gasol is a great fit for great fit for Kobe for he is a supper star who never looks for spotlight and does not mind to be in the shadow of another super star. I doubt I can say the same about Dwight if he will ever come to Lakers while Kobe still reigns.

  28. 16going417 says:

You guys all forget there are other things that make a player great. Pau has heart, desire, drive, commitment, loyalty, dedication AND talent. After listening to the exit interviews last year I would not trade Pau for any player who is available right now. I would have a serious discussion with Bynum and if he could prove to me he wants to be a Laker and give his all towards winning a championship I might keep him. Otherwise Bynum would be in trade discussions every other day (like he currently is by the way).

Kobe knows who he wants around him. Granted that does not mean a thing as I’m sure he did not want Fisher traded, but that happened. I think the Lakers have what it takes to win next year. Just need to make sure everyone is as committed to winning as Kobe is and as Pau has publicly stated he is.

Lastly, don’t know what the point is about the Spaniard players. Spain is currently ranked #2 and team USA is taking the exhibition game against them very seriously. So, if Spain is the only team that can give team USA competition for the gold then no one here should be talking about their players IMO.

  29. Alexandre says:

Let see tomorrow Spain x USA…if the US did not have Durant I would say USA would not touch even on a bronze medal…he is saving the team…

  30. Carrington Banks says:

Pau is the reason the Lakers made it to the playoffs three years in a row, and Kobe knows this

  31. Sean says:

Why would they title this page Kobe and Pau a package deal? Tha’ts so misleading. But Lakers need to keep Pau and keep trying hard to get Dwight so their pick and roll with Nash and Kobe will be amazing with both of the bigs.

  32. BRR says:

HOW ABOUT STEVE BLAK AND MATT BURN FOR HOWARD.
DUDE STOP ABOUT THE TRADE CRAB. HOWARD IS ANOTHER CRAB.

  33. USATeam2012 says:

Pau Gasol is a good player. Hope Lakers won’t trade him away. And yes, Lakers lacked of bench scoring. Steve black and Matt are not efficient bench player. I still miss Jordan Farmar and Sasha Vujacic back in 2008. NBA is all about business. Sick of it

  34. s27m says:

Pau Your overrated I would take Marc over him.

  35. dong5477 says:

Honestly, the lakers wont win anything with it’s existing core pieces. I suggest that the big support man go to potential team. I seriously doubt Lakers will be a finalist with kobe’s remaining years!

  36. dong5477 says:

oh common laker fans! you have all the pieces and yet you complain too much of your players! I question your players commitment. I would rather see Pau in other team than put your blame on 1 person. Then let’s see what a team u really have! Your all money but no value!

  37. dong5477 says:

  38. Willie says:

Paul gasol is a versatile player he just need somebody to give him the ball,he is good in pick and roll…lakers got Steve Nash which is a good addition, lakers just need additional shooter and back to championship contender again.

    • AJ Nair says:

I agree with Willie. Pau is going to be more efficent this season with Steve Nash in the equation.

Pick and pop or pick and roll with be excellent between Pau and Nash.. Go lakers!

  39. Bonafide says:

No one wants to trade for the Spaniards!!

Pau Gasol is always on the trading block – no one wants him or it’s a deal the Lakers won’t take.

Jose Calderon is always on the trading block – no one wants him or it’s a deal the Raptors won’t commit to.

The Pau / Paul trade last year was all but done until the commish stepped in.

The Lakers traded for Pau 5-6 years ago. Though what they sent was Kwame Brown and 2 year off rights to Pau’s brother (another spainard); so maybe you still have a point, a spaniard for a spaniard + some kibbles&bits.

Whether people want him or not, he’s a big part of filling out Kobe’s right hand with golden rings.

    • Sixers ! says:

ohhhhh boys !!!, its because he old. iknow you spanish sheesh !

  40. KB24 says:

I don’t know…really don’t know…..Pau is the most talented big player, but maybe the Lakers need a different player due to be faster and enlarging the space in the offensive end, it’s a tough decision; by the way, even with Nash, I don’t think we could be considered a contender for the next title.

    • matheoh says:

If the lakers aren’t contenders with nash feeding gasol and bynum and taking a big ball-carry load from kobe’s shoulders, then I don’t know what has to happen to make them contenders. They lacked a good distributor and bench scoring last year, in wich they came very close against the thunder, so they added that distribution in nash and added bench scoring with jamison. I say lakers vs heat in the finals, and that’s a series that’s 2 close 2 call in my opinion.

      • Sixers ! says:

since when is a sweep close O.o !

      • gobiggreen says:

ummm they have no bench. . .with any consistency. . .

      • chalice says:

The problem with the Lakers is not offence. With Kobe, Pau and Bynum on the floor, how much more firepower do you need on offence? The big question is can they stop OKC from scoring and with the addition of Nash (not the greatest defender), how has that changed? They seem to be getting the old philosophy from the old Phx team about outscoring your oppontents. Defense will win the championship, not crazy offence. Do you think Nash can guard Westbrook for 48 min in a seven game series?

    • 215Red82 says:

I think the Lakers are definitely contenders now. Nash will be what Rondo is for the Celtics he spreads te floor which what the Lakers need having the twin towers. Jamison and Hill off the bench are going to give teams a lot of problems. I second Lakers vs Heat wit Kobe getting his 6th ring…KB24 and KB8 needs to be in the rafters as soon as he retires. Best to ever do it in my eyes.
