Hall of Fame Ceremonies Get Started With Memorable Reunion Dinner

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. –
Two days of ceremonies at the Basketball Hall of Fame began Thursday night with the major awards short of enshrinement, with Grant Hill reinforcing that character matters, with Pat Williams flashing his signature humor, with Bill Schonely and Sam Smith telling a story a different way, and with former superstars dotting the crowd of several hundred people as part of the annual Reunion Dinner of previous inductees.

Hill, the Clippers forward, accepted the Mannie Jackson-Basketball’s Human Spirit Award in the professional division for community contributions and overcoming adversity. Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun was the recipient from the amateur ranks, and Richard Lapchick, president and CEO of the National Consortium for Academics and Sport as well as founder and director of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics In Sport, in the “Grassroots” category.

Williams, the Magic’s senior vice president, received the John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor from the Hall short of enshrinement. He talked through a career as general manager with four teams as few could, noting how while with the 76ers he told young Charles Barkley to get in shape, only to have Barkley respond, “Mr. Williams, round is a shape.” Or how a balanced meal to Barkley was a Big Mac in each hand.

Schonely, the former Trail Blazers play-by-play man and current community ambassador for the team, and Smith, the long-time Chicago Tribune writer and now at Bulls.com, stood at the podium and talked about themselves as winners of the Curt Gowdy Media Award for broadcast and print, respectively.

Wayne Embry, winner of the Chairman’s Cup, was unable to attend.

The audience at the Hall of Fame included Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Julius Erving, Bill WaltonMoses Malone, many others previously inducted, and most of the Class of 2012 that will be enshrined Friday night about a mile away.

Bulls Have To Grind With/Without Deng

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – Few teams in the league have shown a better understanding of how to survive without a key player than the league-leading Chicago Bulls.

They lose reigning MVP Derrick Rose for a few games with that bad toe and don’t miss a beat.

So while it’s obvious that the Bulls know exactly what to do when one of their big dogs is out of the lineup, it will be interesting to see what they do with Luol Deng on the shelf with that “Kobe Bryant” (torn ligament) in his left wrist.

It’s strange how Deng and Bryant’s names have criss-crossed over the course of Deng’s career. Don’t forget, it was reportedly Deng that the Bulls tried to send to the Lakers in a deal that would have brought Kobe to Chicago years ago. Reports that Bryant was objecting to any deal that included Deng (he wanted to make sure the Bulls had enough talent to compete for a title) is a testament to the value Deng’s peers place on his game.

That’s impressive for a player with no All-Star appearances on his resume yet and is one who is often overlooked when the conversation of the best small forwards in the game comes up.

Even more impressive will be the Bulls’ continued ability to grind through the avalanche of nicks, bumps and bruises that they’ve been able to brush aside so far (16-3 and atop the Eastern Conference and the league). They host the Pacers tonight at 8 p.m. ET on NBA TV.

“I know it’s a bad injury and it sounds terrible, but really, I think it will fine,” Deng, who is trying to avoid surgery, told reporters yesterday. “We’ve got a good team, and I think I’m going to be fine.”

Rose Still Needs Help In Chi-Town

***

HANG TIME, TEXAS – The Bulls won more games than any other team in the league a year ago. The Bulls have the second-best record in the NBA this season. The Bulls have the President of the United States talking about welcoming them to the White House next year to celebrate a championship. The Bulls have the reigning MVP Derrick Rose playing like he’s ready to go back-to-back.

So are there really any questions about the Bulls?

Well, as our good friend Sam Smith of Bulls.com points out, maybe just one:

But it would be nice, also, if someone could score some points.

Yes, Derrick Rose, despite increasing defensive pressure, had 22 points and eight assists. And Carlos Boozer had one of his best games as a Bull with 23 points on nine of 13 shooting and eight rebounds, including a dive on the floor for a loose ball and aggressive fronting the post on Greg Monroe, which we don’t often see from Boozer.

That sort of play enabled the Bulls not only never to trail in beating the Pistons for the 13th straight time, but with an 18-3 run to start the fourth quarter with mostly reserves playing the Bulls broke open a game they controlled but primarily with leads around 10 points.

The Bulls Monday started their lone three in three nights set and are about halfway through playing nine games in 12 nights with nine of the first 13 of the season on the road. Though everyone has scheduling like that to play through this season.

So it doesn’t fully answer whether this Bulls team can score enough to truly be taken seriously.

No More Boozer Bashing … For Now

DALLAS – We’ve been tough on Carlos Boozer here at HT over the years, dating to his disappearing act just last season in Utah, when the Jazz were blown out of the Western Conference semifinals against the Los Angeles Lakers.

We’ve often argued that Boozer’s impressive numbers were a bit deceiving compared to what you see from him during the heat of the moment.

ut he shut us up last night. He did what the Bulls pay him to do in helping punch their ticket to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since the Michael Jordan era, where a showdown with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and the real Heat awaits.

Boozer, finally recovered from the turf toe that plagued him early on during the conference semifinal series against the Hawks, certainly looked like the difference-maker he was supposed to be when the Bulls signed him as a high-dollar free agent last summer. So, it took some hollering from MVP Derrick Rose to get Boozer to stay aggressive (he yelled at Boozer to “SHOOT THE BALL” a couple of times). That’s fine.

Make no mistake, it was Boozer’s 23 points and 10 rebounds, which included a wicked start to get the Bulls going from the opening tip, that made the biggest difference in closing out the Hawks. And now that Boozer understands what Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau wants out of him on the defensive end, this Bulls-Heat matchup should be even more intriguing.

Boozer:’Stay Tuned’ For The Playoffs

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — Carlos Boozer‘s fade this season is not a figment of your imagination.

The Chicago Bulls’ power forward is experiencing a very real power drain that has Bulls fans a little nervous, even with as well as they have played down the stretch of this season.

My main man K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune provides the data:

Boozer shot 55.1 percent in December, 53.9 percent in January, 50.3 percent in February and is at 45.1 percent this month. His scoring average has dropped from 20.6 points in December to 19 points in January to 16.5 points in February down to 12.7 points this month. Boozer is playing slightly less this month at 29.8 minutes per game, down from a monthly high of 33 minutes in February.

Boozer is handing out assurances that this too shall pass, and that he will rebound in plenty of time for the playoffs. The Bulls’ performance in spite of Boozer’s power outage is equally impressive, and they are 18-5 with Boozer and Joakim Noah in the lineup together.

Uncle Sam’s All-Star Picks

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – We have a policy here at the hideout. When Uncle Sam Smith (the vests are a family tradition) speaks, we listen. And he’s weighing in with his All-Star picks, the first set of early returns will be unveiled today. Uncle Sam’s All-Star Picks:

Breaking Down The Bulls

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – You want to know why Tracy McGrady won’t be wearing a Bulls uniform this season?

Bulls Insider Sam Smith of Bulls.com explains why. He also breaks down the Bulls’ summer and joins in the chorus (from TNT’s David Aldridge to the HT mid-summer rankings and just about everyone else) of praise for the offseason work done by Chicago’s front office crew. Carlos Boozer, Kyle Korver and Kurt Thomas alone would have constituted some nice improvements at positions of need.

They’ve taken a measured approach to this entire process and don’t appear interested in doing anything hasty at the one remaining spot on the roster that needs some upgrading (in addition to Ronnie Brewer and C.J. Watson).

There was no sense in ruining a stellar summer with a move that doesn’t fit.

Hang Time Videos

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — We love videos around here.

The good, the bad and the wickedly funny.

But we especially love stuff like this gem from Mavericks star Caron Butler, which is a little bit of all three:

JT CRIBS

Forget that “Cribs” show you’re used to, thanks to our friends in Sacramento, we’re going behind the door with Kings big man Jason Thompson.

He gives us an inside look at his crib.

It’s pretty class for a youngster, but that color scheme in the hallway bathroom …

AWARDS SEASON

We’ve also got a little awards action here from Bulls.com’s Sam Smith, who jumped the gun by a few weeks on these things. But he has some interesting picks, some we agree with and some we don’t.

Take a look and see where you stack up.

ONE MORE LOOK

We feel it’s only right to take one more look at Suns dunk artist Jason Richardson‘s fine work against the young Bulls.

(Note to Bulls: Um, fellas, JRich has been cramming on people since the 90s, you might want to check and see where he is when a ball comes flying off the rim like that. Two words, B-O-X and O-U-T!)

THE BLACK MAMBA AS A DECOY?

I know it sounds ridiculous, but the Fan Night dug up something we never thought we’d hear.

Phil Jackson actually drew up a play once for Kwame Brown instead of Kobe Bryant in huddle. I know it sounds like a cruel joke but it’s for real, straight from the Black Mamba’s lips:

Luckily, that play Jackson scratched up for Kwame ended up just like all of these:
