HANG TIME NEW JERSEY – On the day before the trade deadline, the Houston Rockets were active, making two trades with the Pacific Division and shaking up their frontline.
Less than eight months after he was selected with the No. 5 pick in the Draft, the Kings gave up on Thomas Robinson, sending him, along with Francisco Garcia and Tyler Honeycutt, to Houston for Patrick Patterson, Cole Aldrich and Toney Douglas.
In a separate deal, the Rockets reached an agreement to send Marcus Morris to Phoenix.
Robinson has been somewhat of a disappointment so far, but it’s hard to judge a rookie after just 51 games. It’s especially to hard to judge a rookie after 51 games with a dysfunctional franchise.
Time will only tell whether the Kings made a mistake in drafting Robinson with the No. 5 pick or if they made a mistake in trading him. Either way, they made a mistake.
Here are some notes on the players that were dealt on Wednesday, from the new NBA.com/stats…
- For a 6-foot-10 athlete, Robinson has been a pretty poor finisher thus far, shooting just 74-for-152 (48.7 percent) from the restricted area. Of the 178 players who have attempted at least 100 shots from the restricted area, only five have shot worse than Robinson.
Lowest FG%, restricted area (minimum 100 FGA)
| Player | FGM | FGA | FG% |
| Austin Rivers | 55 | 131 | 42.0% |
| Kevin Love | 48 | 107 | 44.9% |
| Roy Hibbert | 115 | 248 | 46.4% |
| Luc Mbah a Moute | 64 | 138 | 46.4% |
| Brandon Jennings | 115 | 242 | 47.5% |
| Thomas Robinson | 74 | 152 | 48.7% |
- But the rookie is a good rebounder. Of 242 players who have logged at least 750 minutes this season, Robinson ranks 19th (third among rookies) in offensive rebounding percentage and 30th (third among rookies) in total rebounding percentage. The only rookies who are better rebounders than Robinson are both injured: Andre Drummond and Jared Sullinger.
- Of the 249 players who have attempted at least 200 field goals this season, Garcia has the second lowest free throw rate, getting to the line just 6.8 free throws per 100 field goal attempts. Only the Knicks’ Steve Novak (6.4) has a lower free throw rate. And like Novak, Garcia is a catch-and-shoot guy. Of his 77 field goals, 69 have been assisted.
- Patterson started 38 games for the Rockets and was a part of their most used lineup. But that lineup wasn’t all that great. In fact, it was pretty poor defensively, allowing 106.0 points per 100 possessions over 566 minutes.
- Both Morris nor Patterson are perimeter big men. Neither gets to the line very often and both have attempted more than half of their shots from outside the paint. Morris has attempted 65 percent of his shots from outside the paint, while Patterson has attempted 57 percent of his shots from outside the paint.
- Among players who have logged at least 750 minutes, Douglas ranks 86th in assist rate, assisting on just 17.5 percent of his possessions. So he should fit in just fine with the Kings, who rank 29th in team assist percentage, assisting on just 54.2 percent of their field goals.
