Hang Time Road Trip: Breakfast With The Jet And Sunday Surprises

VIDEO: Hang Time Road Trip Day 6

By Sekou Smith

Los Angeles — By the time the clouds gave way to a gorgeous Sunday the Hang Time Road Trip bus had already invaded the neighborhood. TNT’s very own Kenny Smith invited us out to Encino for breakfast and a visit with his beautiful kids, in their pajamas, mind you, to kick off Day 6 of The Hang Time Road Trip 2.

And we made sure to show up early.

It was an excellent way to start a day that included a couple of surprise guests who made their way to the bus and turned Sunday into one of our longest and most satisfying days yet on this journey.

Hollywood stars Kunal Nayyar (who plays Raj on The Big Bang Theory) and Ben Schwartz (Jean-Ralphio on Parks and Rec and Clyde Oberholt on House of Lies) both made their way to the couches in the front of the bus to crack us up and talk hoops, Hollywood and plenty more.

Between visits we found time to help Rick with his HeadGum Fantasy Draft (after some Draft day smoke and mirrors we made sure Fox made the right choice with the No. 1 overall pick, and it wasn’t a tough sell to select Anthony Davis).

Our final full day includes an early morning visit with Doc Rivers and his Los Angeles Clippers, a fitting end to a trip that has seen us chase down the reigning champs, the 16-time champs and the crew that aims to become the future champs all within the borders of this state.

Hang Time Podcast (Episode 209) Rick’s Return

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — We found him.

Finally.

Rick Fox is back in the fold on The Hang Time Podcast, picking up on Episode 209 where he left off months ago, cracking us up while sharing the details of the wild and crazy roller coaster ride that is his life. From Hollywood to Las Vegas to New York and around the globe, Rick has been busy since he last showed up for his job (one of about 226 different jobs) here.

We should clear up a few things now, before you dig in. No, he is not to blame for Serena Williams missing out on the grand slam (he didn’t even make it to her final match at the U.S. Open), that was Drake‘s fault.

Yes, brilliant comedian and actress Amy Schumer is going to need a restraining order to keep Rick a safe distance away from her now that he’s become her unquestioned No. 1 fan.

And yes, these rumors of a musical twist (he’s searching for a stage name but is leaning towards “DJ Trainwreck” … sorry Amy and LeBron James) in his future are legit.

It’s been a while since we’ve had the pleasure of poking fun at the most hilariously entertaining member of our crew.  But it’s good to have him back to share his insights on the sudden passing of Moses Malone, Kobe Bryant‘s readiness for training camp and what that means for the Los Angeles Lakers, his need to learn Spanish (yesterday) for his latest acting gig, rubbing elbows with Oprah, Gayle King and Roger Goodell, his infatuation with live streaming videos on Facebook, introducing his daughter to Nas and so much more.

That’s just a small sampling of what you’ll get on Episode 209 of the Hang Time Podcast: Rick’s Return …

Hang Time Podcast (Episode 143) Featuring Zach Gilford And ‘Are You Kidding Me?’

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — There are reportedly eight different teams expressing interest in the services of Cleveland Cavaliers’ cast off big man Andrew Bynum, eight teams that believe Bynum is a valuable enough piece that they are willing to ignore his track record of not playing up to his immense potential when healthy.

Like everything else where Bynum is concerned, there are passionate opinions on both sides of the argument and we made sure to touch on those on Episode 143 of the Hang Time Podcast now that the Luol Deng-Bynum trade has been finalized. Bynum’s gone, much to the delight of our guest, Friday Night Lights and Devil’s Due star Zach Gilford, whose Bulls roots run deep (from growing up watching Michael Jordan dazzle the world and win titles all the way down to the Scottie Pippen his buddy tattooed on him at 13).

Hall of Famer Reggie Miller and the NBA’s former Dean of Discipline, Stu Jackson, also make their 2014 debut on “Are You Kidding Me?” Miller and Jackson

You get all that and more on Episode 143 of the Hang Time Podcast featuring Zach Gilford.

Hang Time Podcast (Episode 22)

Posted by Sekou Smith

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — Admit it, you laugh whenever you hear about a professional athlete doing double duty in the music or movie business.

Shaquille O’Neal rhyming with the Fu-Schnickens or those seemingly endless NBA cameos on Entourage probably come to mind (and yes, like you we are trying to forget about Kobe Bryant’s guest spot on that Brian McKnight song).

Don’t include Los Angeles Clippers guard Baron Davis is in that group of pro athletes simply indulging one of his passions. Davis is serious about his movie-making passion and has the credentials and industry cred to back it up, including an Emmy nomination for the Stacy Peralta-directed and Forest Whitaker-narrated documentary Crips & Bloods: Made in America.

He joined us on Episode 22 of the Hang Time Podcast to talk movies, basketball, his mentoring and fund-raising work in his native Los Angeles via his Rising Stars of America camp, celebrity kickball (two words: Jessica Alba) and one of his other passions, beards.

Davis is something of a multi-media mogul, having melded and mastered the weird science of sports and entertainment on several different platforms — including Twitter and the “Boomiverse” (it’s worth the trip, and no passport needed).

Davis, however, wasn’t the only heavy hitter to join us on Episode 22 of the HTP. Stu Jackson, the NBA’s vice president of basketball operations, took some time out of his busy schedule to answer our questions about the NBA schedule, his job as the league’s “Fine Guy” and the chances of there being a Hard Knocks-styled show featuring NBA teams (“We don’t have a Rex Ryan in the NBA”).

Jackson does more than just dole out the punishment for those players, coaches and franchises that run afoul of the league’s rules. In fact, his job is far more complex than you might have imagined, as he explains.
