Kings Of The West … Spurs Or Thunder?

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – Identifying the differences between the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder isn’t nearly as clear-cut as a quick scan of the Western Conference standings.

The Spurs lead the West and the entire NBA with a 39-11 record, and that includes their current 11-game win streak. The Thunder have the second best mark in the West and the league at 37-12.

But that still doesn’t give us any real insight into these two teams and what makes one superior to the other, if that is the case. They’ve split a pair of games this season, the Spurs won the first matchup 86-84 in the November 1 season opener for both teams in San Antonio. The Thunder took the second 107-93 on their home floor Dec. 17. And they have jockeyed for position at the top of the standings all season.

It’s a continuation of the battle these two teams waged last season for the supremacy in the Western Conference and there hasn’t been much separation between the two, save of course, for the Thunder’s triumph in the Western Conference finals last season. The script this season is following the same path as a year ago, with the Spurs holding the edge in the regular season standings but the Thunder — with their younger and more dynamic cast — holding the edge in a potential playoff series.

The Spurs have workhorses in All-Stars Tony Parker and Tim Duncan with a wild card of Manu Ginobili (when healthy) and a seasoned and steady supporting cast led by Danny Green, Kawhi Leonard and others. And they have arguably the NBA’s best coach in Gregg Popovich.

The Thunder counter with a pair of All-Stars and superstars of their own in Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook with a wild card of Serge Ibaka and a steady supporting cast led by Kevin Martin and Nick Collison and others. They too have an excellent coach Scott Brooks, whose experiences in recent seasons have helped shape his view of what it takes to push his team in ways that have helped the Thunder evolve from a lottery outfit to title contenders.

Again, there’s isn’t so much as a sliver of space difference between these two heavyweights on paper.

That said, both of these clubs understand the tenuous nature of having a perceived advantage and what that means in the postseason. The Spurs had home court advantage in the Western Conference finals (and a 2-0 series lead) and it couldn’t save them from the clutches of a Thunder team that was simply better at that time.

The Thunder took that same home court advantage into The Finals against the Miami Heat and couldn’t hold off LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Co.

The Spurs and Thunder should have serious challenges on their hands long before they get to the Heat, or whoever comes out of the Eastern Conference come playoff time. The Los Angeles Clippers (when healthy), Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets and perhaps even the struggling Memphis Grizzlies will all have to be dealt with in the playoffs.

But the cream of the Western Conference crop seems to be separating themselves from the pack as we inch closer to the All-Star break. Yet there is very little empirical separation between the Spurs and Thunder.

There is plenty of regular season basketball to be played. So we’re not trying to get too far ahead of ourselves here. That said, if they face off again in the conference finals this season, it’s hard to see the Spurs overcoming the same things that cost them against the Thunder last season. Those young legs will be tough to overcome in a seven-game series.

LeBron’s Coming Home (Video)?

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – No, we’re not talking about that three-day stint LeBron James and his Miami Heat teammates have in Cleveland this week.

We’re talking about TNT’s Ernie Johnson and the NBA TV Fan Night crew of Greg Anthony and Chris Webber checking in with the Heat star about some fun the TNT crew has had at his expense regarding his hair-line and whether or not he’s going to come home to the crew.

If you haven’t seen this already, enjoy some interesting insights on that and more from James last night:

Lin Show Back Off Broadway

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – With all due respect to Jimmer-Mania and the legions of fans who were caught up in that storm this time a year ago, you haven’t seen hoops hysteria like you’re going to see tonight at Madison Square Garden when the Jeremy Lin Show comes back to town.

Jimmer Fredette, himself the epicenter of a basketball movement at BYU, is going to get a New York City-sized dose of “Linsanity” when the Knicks’ conquering hero returns to home soil to take on the Sacramento Kings.

With Lin’s face plastered all over the back page of the tabloids, on magazine covers and all over television screens around the globe, it would be easy for anyone to get swallowed up in the commotion. Most of us are neck-deep in it.

Then you hear Lin speak after sinking that game-winning 3-pointer in Toronto last night and you realize that he’s still floating on the air his play that has elevated the Knicks to these six straight wins.

Lin is winning over observers by the day — a historic six-game run complete with buzzer-beating game winners, scintillating individual performances and the resurrection of a team in disarray has a way of convincing folks. People who didn’t want to believe what they were seeing after the first couple of games are now coming around to the fact that Lin’s New York Minute is going to last a little longer than they might have expected.

Lin has a presence about him that even his predecessors cannot deny.

“You could argue this could be the biggest story of the NBA season,” NBA TV analyst Greg Anthony said during last night’s Heat-Pacers Fan Night broadcast. “I hear more about Jeremy Lin than anything else going on in the NBA. What’s been most impressive is that he never doubted himself. He’s always maintained a certain amount of confidence that he could do it when given the opportunity. It’s not about whether or not he leads them to a championship or is an All-Star, he’s proven he is an NBA player. He’s made the Knicks the talk of the town and not because they were 8 and 13 at one point.”

Hang Time Podcast (Episode 55)

LOS ANGELES – And you though the first round of these NBA playoffs was crazy.

As shocking as it was for some to see the Western Conference No. 1 seed San Antonio Spurs go down to No. 8 seed Hang Time Grizzlies in the first round, the conference semifinal round has brought us yet another stunner. The two-time defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers are the latest upset victim, swept by the Dallas Mavericks, ending not only their threepeat quest and the Hall of Fame career of Phil Jackson.

How in the world did this happen?

We examine the reasons why, and so much more, on Episode 55 of the Hang Time Podcast this week with special guests Greg Anthony of NBA TV and CBS Sports, Earl K. Sneed of Mavericks.com and we even caught up with Atlanta Hawks power forward Josh Smith, whose Hawks are working on a potential upset of their own in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Hawks are tied 2-2 with the playoffs’ No. 1 overall seed Chicago Bulls. Game 5 is tonight at the United Center in Chicago.

You don’t want to miss this one. Check out Episode 55 and see why.
