Hang Time Podcast (Episode 112) Featuring Chris Dortch

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — With the Final Four confetti cleared out of the way and the NBA playoffs just a little over a week away, we decided to spend a little time on what we saw from the college kids and what we might see from them in the future … at least from these college stars who are busy declaring their intentions for the NBA’s June Draft.

The list of early entrants already includes familiar names like Indiana’s Victor Oladipo and Cody Zeller, Syracuse’s Michael Carter-Williams and  Kansas freshman sensation Ben McLemore, among others.

But how many of these college underclassmen are making sound decisions? How many of them are really ready for the rigors that await them in the professional ranks? And are you sure you saw a future NBA sar or two during March Madness?

Michigan’s Trey Burke, the consensus national player of the year, certainly looked the part in the NCAA title game Monday night. And he’s one of four Wolverines who could be headed for the Draft, along with Tim Hardaway Jr. and freshmen Mitch McGary and Glenn Robinson III.

Chris Dortch, the editor of the Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook and NBA.com’s college basketball/Draft expert, joins us to talk about what we saw, who fits where and whether or not they’re making the right choice on Episode 112 of the Hang Time Podcast.

Dortch, who also has a role in the upcoming Jackie Robinson biopic “42″ (in theaters Friday, April 12) also compares notes with our resident thespian. And we also discuss the wisdom of Los Angeles Lakers forward Metta World Peace‘s quick return from knee surgery, Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose‘s chances of returning this season from his knee surgery, the Knicks and their hot streak and what happens in the streets of LA if the Lakers miss out on the playoffs?

Hang Time Podcast (Episode 111) The Carmelo Anthony Debate

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – Few players divide the room the way Carmelo Anthony does.

To some, the New York Knicks’ superstar is a scoring marvel to behold in a league that has always cherished guys who could put the ball in the hole at a record pace. Yet to others, Anthony is an elite scorer but little else and needs to expand the boundaries of his game if he wants to be mentioned in the same breath as friends and contemporaries like LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant.

Of course, the right answer is probably somewhere between those two extreme views. Anthony is arguably the best scorer in the game today (he certainly looked the part scorching the James and Dwayne Wade-less Heat for 50 points in the Knicks’ win Tuesday night on TNT).

But if he was a better rebounder, set-up man and finally “won the big one” then we wouldn’t have anything to debate on Episode 111 of the Hang Time Podcast,  where we also debate and discuss the Brittney Griner to the NBA (instead of WNBA … she’s all for it, by the way) drama, the Mike Rice-Rutgers basketball flap, Shaquille O’Neal‘s retirement ceremony, our Final Four picks (GO BLUE!) and a whole lot more.

Hang Time Podcast (Episode 51)

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – In a game of one-on-one, New York Knicks rookie Landry Fields would have a hefty size advantage over Portland Trail Blazers point guard Patty Mills, who is roughly eight inches shorter than the nearly 6-foot-8 Fields.

Have them battle using their own comedic work off the court, however — Fields has the highly entertaining “Andy (Rautins) and Landry Show” while Mills has the equally hilarious “On The Streets With Patty Cakes: Meet Pat Stacks” — and we’re talking about a completely even match.

That’s why we were honored to have both Fields and Mills join us on Episode 51 of the Hang Time Podcast, so they could talk about their comedic stylings as well as other much more serious and pertinent topics.

One of those topics is the work Mills is doing to help the flood victims back home in his native Australia with the wearsmyshirt.com campaign.

But we didn’t stop there. NBA.com’s LeMont Calloway, who handles the Dunk Ladder and all of the drama and highlights that come along with it, carved a few minutes out of his busy schedule to join us. He schooled us on the difference between a “throw down” (think Blake Griffin over Timofey Mozgov or Marcin Gortat) and a true dunk (think Griffin over most everyone and everything else).

Hang Time Podcast (Episode 50)

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – Who knew 50 would feel this good?

We had no idea how much fun it would be turning the big Five-O! But we have a little help celebrating on Episode 50 of the Hang Time Podcast.

Dallas Mavericks forward Caron Butler (formerly of Final Four participant UConn), Idaho Stampede forward Antoine Walker (formerly of Final Four participant Kentucky) and NBA.com’s numbers guru John Schuhmann all made their way to the hideout for the big party.

It’s a huge week for Butler’s Mavericks, who face the Lakers tonight in a showdown on TNT at 10:30 p.m. ET, and his Huskies, who will be down the road from Butler’s Dallas home this weekend in Houston for the Final Four.

Walker’s schedule is pretty busy this week, too. The former NBA All-Star will finish off the regular season with the Stampede this weekend with a doubleheader against Utah. Don’t be surprised to see him in Houston if the Wildcats reach the title game.

We asked them both to break down the hottest topics in basketball — the NBA MVP debate, the Final Four, Butler’s possible return from a knee injury and if and when Walker will return to the NBA, among other things — and then had our main man Schuhmann run the numbers to help us make sense of the Derrick Rose backlash that seems to be gaining momentum as the NBA regular season comes to a close.
