Hang Time Podcast (Episode 128): Featuring Brooklyn Nets Radio Voice Chris Carrino

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — Institutional knowledge of the NBA will flow freely throughout the locker room next season in Brooklyn.

There will be more “old pros” on that Nets roster than any other single roster in the league. A staggering eight of the Nets’ top 11 players going into the season are 30 or older, including future Hall of Famers Kevin Garnett (37) and Paul Pierce (35). who came over via that blockbuster trade with Boston from last month. They’re a team we’re considering renaming “Thirtysomething,” (for all of you old enough to remember the sitcom from the late 1980s).

Whether or not that experience will power the Nets deep into the payoffs is still being debated around these parts. And that’s why we reached out to Nets radio voice Chris Carrino of WFAN to share some of his insights from the other side for Episode 128 of the Hang Time Podcast.

Carrino, a staple on Nets broadcasts since 1992, answers all of our questions about the Nets and their chances to compete with the Miami Heat, Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks for top dog status in the Eastern Conference. We also dissect the changing roles fr guys like Joe Johnson and Brook Lopez and examine the new pressures faced by Deron Williams.

You get all of that and the name-dropping Olympics with Rick Fox and Lang Whitaker on Episode 128 of the Hang Time Podcast: Featuring Nets radio play-by-play voice Chris Carrino …

As always, we welcome your feedback. You can follow the entire crew, including the Hang Time Podcast, co-hosts Sekou Smith of,  Lang Whitaker of’s All-Ball Blog and renaissance man Rick Fox of NBA TV, as well as our new super producer Gregg (just like Popovich) Waigand and the best engineer in the business,  Jarell “I Heart Peyton Manning” Wall.

Avery Goes To Russia

Posted by Sekou Smith

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — If you’re like most of us here at the hideout, the mere mention of the Avery Johnson and trip to Russia sends an electric charge through your body.

Seriously, we love everything about the idea of the New Jersey Nets’ coach making trips to faraway lands where his accent can duel with the accents of the locals in an epic linguistics battle for the ages.

While we haven’t seen any video of the Johnson family’s first trip to Russia, the fine folks at have provided us with a photo gallery that allows us to imagine what might have been said by all involved.

Like all great personalities, Johnson doesn’t really have to say anything to get us going. Just having him in the room and anticipating what he might say is enough to fire us up. He doesn’t really have to say anything in particular. And when he’s in red-light mode (the camera’s on), there’s nothing better.

Just watch the video above and check out that Hollywood look he shoots back and forth at the camera and Chris Carrino at the start of the interview. Priceless.

We don’t often pick out games we want to watch because of the coaches involved, but Johnson on the sideline = Must See TV!

We will be tuning in this year whenever we get the chance.
