Spurs won’t take Grizzlies lightly

VIDEO: Gregg Popovich speaking on playoff preparation.

SAN ANTONIO — They know the Grizzlies come struggling into the playoffs with nine losses in their last 10 regular season games. They know that with key cogs Marc Gasol and Mike Conley missing, among so many others, that Memphis will trot out a lineup of journeyman and NBA D-League refugees for Game 1 on Sunday night.

But the Spurs also know far better than to take any playoff opponent. As if coach Gregg Popovich would let them. They are expecting a team ready to put up a fight.

“Same thing they always bring,” said Spurs captain Tim Duncan. “Very scrappy, very physical. They’ve got a lot of guys that are going to try to turn up the intensity and make plays with their energy, their steals, their physicality. They’re going to bring it in that respect, and they’ve got a lot of vets out there who have been in the playoffs enough, and they know what it takes to get over that hump.”

Guard Danny Green agrees that no matter the struggles the Grizzlies have had dealing with a spate of injuries coming down the stretch, there will be no taking anything for granted by the team that won a franchise record 67 games.

“Right now, the only two teams we are focused on is us and the Memphis Grizzlies,” Green said. “We don’t want to skip any steps or look ahead.”
