Boston’s Crowder out ‘couple of weeks’

HANG TIME BIG CITY — The Boston Celtics’ efforts to hang on to the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race may have just encountered a bump in the road. Speaking to the media Sunday, Celtics coach Brad Stevens said starting forward Jae Crowder will likely miss time due to a right ankle injury…

Crowder suffered the injury in the second half of Boston’s 102-98 loss to the Houston Rockets on Friday. Crowder had played in all of Boston’s 66 games this season, averaging a career high 14.4 points and 5.1 rebounds. The Celtics have 16 games remaining, and are currently one loss ahead of Miami and Charlotte for third place in the Eastern Conference.

It’s a tough loss with a couple teams right on our heels going into the end stretch of the season. Crowder does so much, not just with his stats but the way he motivates the rest of the team and the fans. At home, that’s a big loss especially. Still, Celtics are a tough bunch and on the bright side this is the chance for someone else to step up and prove themselves. I’d love to see Rozier worked into the rotation more when the small ball rotation makes sense.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Smart start in his place. Smart is shorter but uses his strength well to defend bigger players. This might also add some minutes for Jerebko, Hunter or Young at SF and Rozier at PG/SG.

I think this will translate into one or possibly two extra losses but it sounds like they should be back to full strength by the end of the season. Personally, I don’t care where they’re going to finish. They aren’t going to compete for the title and that’s all that really matters so forcing these young people to play more significant minutes isn’t a bad thing.

It’s tough coz Crowder is a solid 2 way player. Even though Celts are 10 deep but this disrupts the rotation. With Olynk out, if Turner starts in place, they will less ball handling in 2nd unit not to mention the firepower. Crowder is not Paul Pierce but he’s solid mid-long range shooter and solid driving to hoop, while excellent defender (better than Pierce).
