Rose undecided on Team USA camp

The list is getting longer with each passing day. Dwight Howard said heโ€™ll attend the USA Basketball camp in Las Vegas this month with an eye on the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Kevin Durant, James Harden, Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook and Carmelo Anthony, Paul George and Blake Griffin were already in. LeBron James has not made it official, but is a likely participant.

That leaves one prominent A-list star still very much on the fence. Derrick Rose is still trying to decide if he would rather rest his wheels for training camp rather than risk them for the red, white and blue, according to Nick Friedell of

Rose has indicated in the past that he would like to play for Team USA in the Olympics, but sources told that he is weighing the potential benefits of taking more time off before the start of Bulls training camp in late September.

Rose was on track to play for the 2012 Olympic team that won gold at the London Games before tearing the ACL in his left knee in Chicago’s first game of the 2012 playoffs.

Rose, who helped Team USA win gold at the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey, made his return to the national team last summer in Spain as part of the gold medal-winning U.S. squad at the inaugural FIBA World Cup.

Bulls GM Gar Forman and former Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau — an assistant on Team USA’s staff to head coach Mike Krzyzewski — have both publicly supported Rose’s decision to play for Team USA in years past.

But the decision to go to Las Vegas for two days of non-contact workouts and an intrasquad scrimmage Aug. 13 ultimately rests with Rose.

  1. Dave Norman says:

Derrick Rose . . . . Lol stop ! Im from Chicago & i can give two ___ s about Derrick Rose ! Lets be honest guys he doesn’t deserve to represent the Bulls let alone the country ! He has freakish athletic ability, great ball handling skills, grit, & strength. Pure “Power Guard” nevertheless has the heart of a “Lamb” ! And that’s the truth ! I’ll rather Ricky Rubio & he’s not even American ! Derrick needs to show more, point blank period ! Send Joakim & let him run point ! At least you’ll get some heart & interest. Lol ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Kisster says:

Just put Kyrie Irving on the roster, he’s the best point guard in the league with handles and a shoot.

  3. deiviuxs says:

D-Rose should rest this once out and focus on bringing the championship back to Chi-town.
He already won a gold medal with USA basketball, now it’s time to put all the focus on staying healthy and bringing a ring to his own city.
Like someone already mentioned, he can always participate in the 2020 Olympics if he decides to.

  4. jj says:

He better hurry & make a decision before his spot is handed to wall or lillard or lowry. Point being they dont need him. Westbrook and curry and lebron are primary handlers and he’s not a spot up shooter or a shooter period so why even risk it when you’ll get at least 1 more run at it. Trey burks and mcw pose no threat at challenging you 4 years from now and russell is a joke. But I got to admit I just love seeing him on the court and was really disappointed in 2012 when he tore his acl and couldnt play.

  5. Yomi says:

Lol Derrick Rose keeps speaking into existence, meaning he keeps saying/thinking he’s going to get he injured he just might. if he wants play he might as well play, frfr him playing actually makes him more in shape for the long haul he isn’t even 30 yet. He shouldn’t play with the notion he’ll get injured again and the only way for him to truly be 100 is play basketball

  6. irfan says:

Does he really even deserve the spot, wtf is he talking about, like he would actually make the final roster ccc

  7. Sit Out says:

They don’t really need him. I understand wanting to play for your country but, PG is the deepest position in the NBA. Rest up; you’re young, go for gold in 2020. Should be an even better team than 2012 with a Superstar Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard in the post.

  8. Ryan says:

IMO, Rose should skip this one, be prepared & well conditioned for the coming season..

  9. Hypothesis says:

Representing the u.s.a as an Olympian is really one of the greatest honors you can achieve. Especially with the fact it’s pretty certain you’ll be bringing home the gold. He should attend, but work out the level of training he’ll be doing with the coach. Hopefully all his injury woes are behind him.

  10. mikegr says:

“two days of non-contact workouts and an intrasquad scrimmage”
What to think about? How on earth he can get injured or tired that much which will cost his performance on Bull’s season start?
Sometimes you make noise by choosing where to go, sometimes you make more noise by being “undecided”. Nice PR again..

  11. brad says:

    What is more important?

  12. Arielle says:

He needs to be cautious in masking sure he doesn’t get injured he should go for it.

  13. Arielle says:

He Probably doesn’t wanna put himself in the same situation of getting injured again on the court so maybe that could be the reason he’s taking cautionary measures

  14. harriethehawk says:

I think Rose should go for it.

    • josh says:

Good grief! This kid needs to sit out and focus on the coming season. If i was on his team, knowing the issues he has had in the past AND knowing he isn’t 100% yet and he wants to abuse his body for an overseas game/series, I would be looking for another team.

      • Mufasa says:

I want him to play but because of his history with injuries he should sit this one out. Being a PG is probably the toughest position. He should le his body fully heal and play on Team USA in 2020.
