Numbers preview: Rockets-Mavs

VIDEO: West Series Preview: Rockets – Mavericks

HANG TIME NEW JERSEY — The Southwest Division comprises more than half of the Western Conference playoff bracket. So two of them have to play each other.

The Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets both made changes to their roster in December, bringing the enigmatic Rajon Rondo and Josh Smith from the Eastern Conference. A month after they added Rondo to their mix, the Mavs were 30-13, a game ahead of the Rockets.

But things went downhill from there. The Mavs led the league in offensive efficiency at the time they traded for Rondo, but scored almost 10 fewer points per 100 possessions after the trade than they did before it. Their defense did improve some, but not enough to make up for the offensive drop-off.

The Rockets, meanwhile, survived a myriad of injuries to win the division and finish second in the West. They’re missing two starters and don’t have Dwight Howard at 100 percent, but have gotten by with a top-10 defense and an MVP candidate. That could be enough to get through an opponent that has had issues on both ends of the floor at one point or another.

Here are some statistical notes to get you ready for Rockets-Mavs, with links to let you dive in and explore more.

  1. ftb says:

Mavs stink they are not better than the rockets experience matters ya Houston has bench players that are actually good unlike Charlie villiunavea stinks like every other mav on the bench

  2. Kenny says:

Mavs will win this series easily. Carlisle is the 2nd best coach in the league and he is going to make the Rockets beat the Mavs with Dwight Howard and Josh Smith at the FT line.

  3. funkmong says:

Mavs are has beens and although Rockets likely win this series, they’ll get bounced next.

  4. KeepIt100 says:

Houston has been overachieving all year, and I think they are built more toward regular season success . They rely too heavily on free throws and 3 pointers both of which will drop off a bit in the playoffs when the pressure (both defensive, and mental) goes up and the whistles sometimes don’t come as easily.

Dallas has a veteran team peppered with NBA champions. I also think that we’ll see the REAL Dirk Nowitzki now that the playoff are here.. Don’t be surprised to see 25 & 10 from Dirk in this series.

Mavs in 6 if Parsons is OK. Mavs in 7 if he’s not.

  5. NBA FAN says:

The Mavs don’t play good D play and simple. I like the Rockets in this one because of their defense and the bench depth. I lean towards a sweep buy the Mavs might get a lucky steal.

  6. Indiana'sownLarryBird says:

    Dirk is my guy, Dallas.

  7. en. says:

Houston in 5….I like dirk dats it other than dat f@k em all

  8. Gilbs Gibe says:

Dallas in game 5 or 6

  9. Gilbs Gibe says:

Dallas will win this match up!

  10. Jeremymichel says:

Just from this it makes it sound like it’s going to be a landslide, but pretty much all their games have been pretty close

  11. harriethehawk says:

The Dallas Mavericks haven’t done anything significant since they won the title in 2011 and it will be standard mode of operation as well this playoff season. They will exit stage left right here against the Rockets. Very unmatched. This series will be over very quick, if not a blowout. Fear that beard.

  12. Sim Bhullar says:

The rockets better watch out cause Dirk is gonna come at them Guns blazzin
