Trail Blazers’ Blake honors Kersey with number change

VIDEO: Jerome Kersey’s No. 25 jersey will not be worn again this season in Portland

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — Steve Blake is honoring Portland Trail Blazers’ legend Jerome Kersey the best way he can, by changing from the No. 25 Kersey wore during his time (1984-95) with the franchise and changing to the No. 5.

In one of the classier moves honoring Kersey, who died from a blood clot Wednesday at 52, Blake’s number switch ensures that Kersey’s No. 25 will hang in the rafters at the Moda Center for years to come.

“Jerome Kersey meant a lot to this team and to this city,” Blake said in a statement released by the team. “I’ve known Jerome for a long time now and wanted to honor him and his vast contributions both on and off the court. I consider it an honor to wear the number 25, but this just seemed like the right thing to do.”

Blake will wear No. 5 starting Friday night against Utah. He had to ask the NBA’s permission for the jersey change request, one that was presumably granted without hesitation.
