Celtics, Nuggets trade guards

VIDEO: Nate Robinson had a big night vs. the Clippers in December

UPDATE, 10:15 a.m., Jan. 15

The Boston Celtics have agreed to a buyout with Nate Robinson, making him a free agent, reports TNT’s David Aldridge:

The Nuggets and Celtics are swapping veteran point guards in a trade that sendsΒ Jameer Nelson to Denver and Nate Robinson to Boston. The deal was initially reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo!

After spending 10 seasons with one club, the Magic, Nelson will be on his third team of 2014-15, after joining the Mavericks as a free agent and playing 23 games for Dallas, then being dealt to the Celtics as part of the return package for Rajon Rondo, and now the Nuggets. In all, Nelson is averaging 6.8 points and 4.4 assists in 24.3 minutes that includes starting for the Mavericks and primarily coming off the bench in Boston.

Robinson, who would be in his second stint with the Celtics after previously playing there for parts of two seasons, is contributing 5.8 points and 2.3 assists in 14.1 minutes in Denver.

The Celtics are expected to negotiate a buyout,Β Yahoo! reported, saving money while allowing Robinson to become a free agent who would draw interest from playoff teams. The Clippers, who have been linked to another Boston guard, Austin Rivers, would apparently likewise look at Robinson in hopes of upgrading the bench that has been a major problem area the first half of the season.

  1. Sandeman says:

It’s too bad the Raptors don’t really have room for another guard I just love his game. He’s an offensive spark plug that comes in and can just ignite!

  2. NBAIQ says:

The Bulls could use this guy again. I only hope they reach out to him. He’s an energy guy that can make impactful plays each game. The Bulls have been seriously lacking the energy and wing depth lately. I always wanted to see Rose and Nate in the backcourt. Nate, Rose, Jimmy, Pau, Noah would be a high energy group!

  3. Jamesfoe says:

I do know that Nate has shortcomings, but I would take his heart and dedication over anything Jameer Nelson brings to the table. His work with Chicago should have gotten him a nice contract, but these GMs are blind. I hope he at least gets to a contender and has the opportunity at a ring. Miami , Indiana and Atlanta would good landing spots.

  4. Mike says:

Im a nuggets fan and he did well for us but with the injuries and Ty getting the minutes should also buyout Nelson now… A good fit for nate would be with Portland, Dallas, Detroit, Golden State, even Atlanta but not Chicago with Brooks look what happened last year both in Denver crying over minutes. Denver needs to get Harris some minutes free up some cap and get a Small Forward next year or a big time center.. Tho nurkic is going to become a beast.

  5. Zach says:

They should have kept him in Denver. I think Nelson isn’t as good as Robinson.

  6. ix says:

Nate Robinson should go to the Suns! Imagine Dragic bros, Bledsoe, Thomas and Robinson. The ultimate small ball line-up!

  7. brad says:

It’s ridiculous not radicolous, you idiot!

  8. Richard says:

Nate Robinson should sign with either the GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS, OR THECHICAGO BULLS, he would be perfect off of the bench for either team, the way the Bulls are going the WARRIORS MIGHT BE A BETTER CHOICE

  9. SourPatch says:

He should go to the bucks πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ at least they’re a playoff team, or he should go to the Clippers. Him & Doc have a connection & they could use another solid bench player.

  10. dchan says:

Nate should sign with the Cavs to unite Uncle Drew’s team

  11. Polak from Poland says:

there r 2 teams makin’ unexpectable trades this season: Celtics and Knicks.
When Boston started to get they rythm in the season, they traded Rondo, and than Green…
Knicks made more awful trades starting from trading Chandler and Felton for Dalembert and Calderon(Dalambert was weived), Then sended Shump and J.R to cavs for Amundsen and 2nd round pick(wtf?) (shump was good draft pick).
I understand a cap room , salaries etc. etc. but come on. This teams almost don’t exist ( offcourse boston looks better)
Now Nate comes back to Celtics to get free agancy?!Radicolous

    • Skrutz says:

First, your spelling hurts the eyes. Second, did you honestly think the Celtics were going after a title? They don’t want to make the playoffs. They have a ton of picks coming up. The Knicks though… they’re in emergency rebuild mode after a surprisingly terrible start. It’s called cutting your losses and looking to the bright side.

    • sst says:

DA’s been doing a great job with all that trades. A lot of draft picks in next couple of years, huge free cap space and a very good young core…Celtics are OK and the team is on the right way. NYK on other hand are not OK and they are not going anywhere but at the bottom of EC in next few years

  12. Brain32 says:

Nate Robinson is one of the most insanely underrated players in the NBA, maybe even in the history of the NBA…it’s completely crazy how nobody wants to take that guy for a longer period and commit, he has proven himself time and again AND in situations where many much better rated players failed miserably…
    It’s senseless, just senseless…

    • The Voice Of Reason says:

Kinda makes you wonder about what he is like in the locker room then doesn’t it? Nate is a very solid bench spark and has been for every team he’s played for. So the fact that teams keep trading him, despite his solid play means that it’s not his on-court play they aren’t happy with…

  13. harriethehawk says:

Nate Robinson gets tossed around every year and he gets paid basketball minimum wage. He shined when he played for the Bulls. Too bad so sad.

  14. Leon Barlow says:

My cousin is going to ball.

  15. bedsidetrash says:

Nate has .348 FG % and .261 3P% this season. So the Mavs will be all over him.

  16. Kelay says:

Better yet, swing for the fence and try to get Evan Turner. Can play and defend three positions. This will give The Clippers more options at the wing position also.

  17. Kelay says:

Trade Jordan Farmar for Nate Robinson. He hasn’t lived up to anything for the Clips this season. We need an upgrade in that department.

    • tolits says:

Robinson can score but he is a defensive liability because of his height

      • mr cool says:

You dont have to be tall to defend. short people have an advantage to steal the ball easier because they are lower to the ground. I have played basketball for years and was always coming up with the ball because, the ball has to hit the floor at some point.

      • The Voice Of Reason says:

Agree with Mr. Cool. You might too young (I don’t know) but some of the meanest defenders (at point guard that is) include Muggsy Bogues and Spud Webb – both were shorter (Muggsy was only 5′ 3″ and Spud was 5′ 7″) so height is NOT the issue. Nate’s problem is that he doesn’t commit to defense play after play. He’s not James Harden bad but if he committed like Chris Paul does to defense (2.4 steals per game) then he would be way more effective.
