Reports: T’Wolves to trade for Sixers’ Young

From staff reports

The Minnesota Timberwolves reportedly will continue their offseason overhaul by acquiring swingman Thaddeus Young from the Philadelphia 76ers, as first reported by Jerry Zgoda of the Star Tribune:

Young to Minnesota was rumored after the Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly agreed to the framework of a Kevin Love deal. Young averaged 17.9 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game for the Sixers last season and is just 26 years old. The Sixers will receive defensive ace Luc Mbah a Moute, guard Alexey Shved and the Miami Heat’s 2015 first round pick (which will come from the Cavaliers) in exchange for Young, who Philadelphia reportedly has been shopping for the past year.

Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski has more on the deal, including a deeper reason for them making the trade:

The Minnesota Timberwolves will acquire Philadelphia 76ers forward Thaddeus Young for a 2015 first-round draft pick and two role players, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

The Timberwolves will send Philadelphia the Miami Heat’s 2015 first-round pick Minnesota will acquire as part of the Kevin Love deal with Cleveland, sources said. The T-Wolves will send forward Luc Mbah a Moute and guard Alexey Shved to the Sixers.

Mbah a Moute has a long-standing relationship with Sixers rookie Joel Embiid, and Philadelphia considers him an important part of the mentoring process for the third pick in the 2014 NBA draft.

This three-team deal cannot be completed until Saturday, August 23, 30 days after Andrew Wiggins signed his rookie contract.

  1. phillyinflorida says:

what is the sixers doing????? dont understand their strategy. not a competant team since 1983. how much longer do we have to wait?

  2. Mark says:

Everyone suggesting Martin should come off the bench should just whoa back a bit. He is the ONLY proven elite scorer on this team… He will be starting, and I would imagine that over the next season or two, he’s going to need to play as many minutes as possible to give the Twolves any chance in games. Simply, Thad Young and Martin are the only shooters there! I would imagine a starting five of Rubio, Martin, Wiggins, Young, Pekovic would bring the best balance of defense, offense, and shooting… Make the young guys come off the bench and earn their minutes.

  3. just me says:

you all guys say its a good trade… have you considered that 2 canadians might go to raptors after getting that much needed experience as wolves. Benette would go in pf and wiggins sf. Their contracts will expire, and that time will come quick. Not enough time for them to develop to bring wolves to finals but enough to become good enough to help raptors to go there.

  4. blazeman says:

Cleveland is getting screwed with the wiggins-love trade. Love has proven that he can’t lead a team and has never been in the playoffs, for a young future star in the making and bennet and 1st round picks! What are these people smoking in Cleveland!? Love gets torched by bigger better players all night. Golden state knew loves value and offered a very good trade. IMO future will show this as a very lop sided trade in Minnys favor!

  5. Rangers says:

Bledsoe and 2 future 1st round picks ( suns have 4 picks in Next 2 seasons) usa much better deal, but just have to convince bledsoe to sign with them for 14-15~ million a year. He’s easily top 10 point guard, and could make top5 with this production increase.

  6. TheKush says:

If all this is true good trades for the Timberwolves!

  7. Rangers says:

Why is everybody overrating the timberwolves move? Lmao

They get- average player (that is a bad rebounder) in Thad young with a bad contract (over 9 mill a year), Bennett (extremely bad rookie year, and I mean historically bad) with a bad contract of 5~ million a year. They also get no future draft picks.

At least they get wiggins, however, his advanced metrics in college are brutally bad both offensively and defensively. He’s at least worth a shot.

  8. Unkaned says:

Not such a bad deal for Timberwolves after all, given their alternative (losing Kevin Love for nothing — even though they deserved to for signing him to an initial contract where, at the end, he would be an unrestricted free agent). They’ll get Wiggins, Bennett (who will at least be a decent guard off the bench), already have Pekovic, are getting Thaddeus Young (not great, but more than just a role player), Miami’s draft pick this coming year (probably about the 24th pick, or so), their own pick, … and this year, winning maybe 30 games, their own draft pick will likely be pretty high. Personally, the deal they were offered by Golden State (David Lee, Harrison Barnes and a 1st round pick) was a better deal — they foolishly did not take it — but even so, they have a structure to rebuild around (just have two mediocre starting guards, unfortunately). And Cleveland has no money to get any decent role players, and won’t into the future, with three guys alone already soaking up about $65M. But if they manage to get a center who can score (and Irving looks like he could get the ball to him, and having LaBron and Love on the wings to keep the double-teams away), they’ll really be unstoppable. Will be interesting stuff to watch.

  9. mike says:

1st round pick for t young? I would have given a 1st round pick for Jeff green of the celtics. Also I would try to trade kevin Martin for tyreke evans. But they will not win for about 3 years so they have time to figure things out

  10. jet3333 says:

I like this deal for both teams thaddeous young 17.9 points 6.0 rebounds nice deal!

  11. Swag says:

Wolves are gonna become like the OKC thunder if you give them a couple of years

  12. Tatum says:

This is good for the Youngwolves. They should start:

Nothing but athletes on the floor and you have Martin, Bennett, Barea(If not traded), Brewer all have energy to bring off the bench. They could make some noise.

    • Justin says:

Tatum, I am happy you are excited, but, in my opinion, your projected starting 5 wouldn’t even sniff the playoffs….the only noise they would make is challenging the record for most losses in a season and the occastional highlight dunk on SportsCenter. The West would beat this team to a pulp on a nightly basis. I agree, however, that they are phenominal athletes, but that doesn’t translate into winning.

  13. Henrik Jensen says:

    Pekovic; 16P, 7R, 2B
    Dieng; 8P, 6R, 2B
    Young; 20P, 6R, 2A, 2S
    Brewer; 13P, 5R, 2A, 1S, 1B
    Bennett; 14P, 6R, 1A, 1S, 1B
    Wiggins; 20P, 6R, 2A, 1S, 1B
    Rubio; 10P, 10A, 4R, 2S
    LaVine; 7P, 5A, 4R
    Muhammad; 8P, 4R, 2A
    Barea; 10P, 5A, 3R
    Martin: 20P, 4R, 3A
Yes it will not look exactly like this, but they will have a young core + lots of lots of talents, i think its a great deal, they need to add 2-3 veteran players maybe Gooden, Brand or Dalembert Inside + J-Rich outside, that would make them have a bit more depth + some guys for the youngsters to learn from.

    • Justin says:

Brand? as in Elton Brand… must be joking!

This team in 5 years will still be in the cellar in the West. Period.

    • Dionte Christmas says:

Honestly that’s a lot of young talent. I’m a Boston fan but I hope it works out

  14. Dom says:

Interesting Cleveland gave up on two #1 picks so fast… Love is overrated… His numbers are great because he is selfish and his greed really hurt Minn. I have never seen or heard of a team getting so much talent in return for a player that is overrated and was leaving in 2015 anyway. Minn really got a good deal this summer! Cleveland will be great for the next few years – so maybe it was worth it.

  15. Wayne says:

I am a Wolves fan, they did well, but so did the Sixers. Shved is not a bad player, and a future #1.

Cleveland will compete for the ring now

  16. jmndodge says:

This is a good deal. Biggest problem is that we need to dump K-Mart/JJ. Neither is good enough to bring us to the playoffs, and both will take time from young players who will need that floor time to develop. Will be interesting to watch Flip with these players. Shved was wasted by Adelman – I wish him well, way to much talent for the use we made of him. With all the young players to watch, don’t forget to watch G. Dieng and his role perhaps playing both C/PF. PEK’s health this season will also determine our next area for Trade/Draft/Free Agent. Sure hope that we find a way to retain GR3 – he has just as good a chance to be a go to guy on this team as many of the others. With the move of Shved it looks like LaVine will primarily play PG – Don’t think it’s his best position, but with his ability to score, if he learns to effectively run an offense he could challenge Rubio for team leadership. Ideally this season – PEK/Young/Brewer(Muhammed)/Wiggins Rubio – Dieng/Bennett/Budinger/(Hummel)/Muhammed/LaVine – Turiaf/Williams/GR3 on the bench.

  17. Baldwin jr. says:

Perfect trade for the TimberWolves cause what Young can bring on the court is a lot of energy which will help the team but he needs to get to know the players more on and off the court in order to the w to Minnesota.
Kevin Love moving to Cleveland will be a huge nightmare for any Eastern Division team and they are highly to go title cause what Kevin Love can bring to the hometown of Cleveland is he can rebound, block some shots, shoot from long distance and he’s a trustworthy player. Him, James, and Kyrie will be the main attraction to Cleveland. Waiters, Miller and Varajo could provide to keep the Cavs focus.

  18. Carter-Williams says:

Good deal. But the Wolves are gonna be the next Philly for a couple of years. They need some veteran around, Marion or so….
Its a pity, Mr. Rubio should be surrounded by shooters in a Sun-like team, with this starting line-up he would struggle even more.

  19. keith wilson says:

How is the NBA allowing this trade to happen when there has already been contract exten talks wow and then veto the L A Lakers free agents something going on

    • wingman says:

Which contract extensions? Just because a journalist say something happened, it doesn’t become truth, or proof of truth. .

  20. Mikey Mike says:

I should have went to the NBA
    I am a 90% three point shooter
Can I enter the draft at the age of 30?
I could join the magic and take them to the finals!!!

  21. Parad0x says:

The Wolves have gotten a lot better and younger then. Is it right that they will have these players?

  22. as says:

if im the wolves im not sure that I would give up a first round pick for this guy.

  23. mnmike says:

Wolves overall looks talented, yet young:

    Front Court —

    Back Court –

  24. ok says:

The Twolves have bottlenecked the 3/SF position… They traded for Young and Wiggins, drafted Zach Levine, and have Brewer…and Bennett is really a three not a power forward. The need to trade someone or have talent and potential wasting a way due to lack of playing time and opportunity. I would love to see Levine and Wiggins start at the 2/3 respectively with Rubio…but I doubt if Wolves do it.

  25. matjaz54 says:

Personally, Bennett should come off the bench, and my starting 5 would be:

With the fact that if I needed a more defensive-minded starting 5, I could put Corey Brewer at the SF with Martin on the bench. But at the beginning I would start with the above.

All in all, I will be eager to watch the wolves next season 🙂

    • hilljr says:

The big problem Minny is going to have is, outside Martin, Who’s going to shoot the ball next year. Wiggins has a very average jumper, and doesn’t always take his best looks. Young is a decent mid-range shooter, nothing else, Pekovic is a back to the baset throw back, and Rubio, well Rubio, and shooting should never be mentioned together, under ANY circumstances.

  26. T gas T ako says:

next year MCW will also be traded!!! the sixers managements are all FOOLS!!!

  27. harriethehawk says:

Because Minnesota gets to dump 2 people who have expiring contracts, and they get Cleveland’s (via Miami I think) #1 pick. And they get a veteran who may not fill Kevin Love’s shoes, but could come kinda sorta close. Also, I believe 3 deal trades are made to that 3rd team team to sweeten the pot. There may not be any teams who are willing to give up a good player, but every team has “baggage” they are willing to unload, quick.

  28. This is a good deal for Minnesota, I agree!

  29. Rah says:

Tanking starting even earlier for the Sixers?

    • mike says:

Sounds like a smart plan for the sixers. Get between 1 – 3 pick next year, draft a sg or sf, sign a big sg or sf, then pair that with mcw, noel and embid

  30. Geronimo says:

I like this deal for Minny
    PF: Bennet
    SF: Young
    C: Pekovic
    SG: Wigging
    PG: Rubio
    sixth-m :Dieng

  31. MeanGreenTeam says:

He’s not really a swingman though….never seen him play SG

  32. Fedell says:

Minnesota’s playoff bound next season. Much better and deeper both offensively and defensively. 4 starters other than Rubio should average upwards of 15ppg efficiently. Rubio is a magnificent distributor and a good defender along with Wiggins, Young, and Brewer. They also have solid rebounding even without Love. Lets not sleep on last year 1st overall pick, Bennett.

    • Pablo says:

woah woah … easy there… give the young guys a couple of years first… the west is too strong right now to knock any teams from last season out of the playoffs…. but i do expect them to do well. Lets be realistic though

    • John says:

No. Let us actually sleep very much on Anthony Bennett. We were awake for him all season last year, and he put us to sleep. Don’t be surprised if we hit “SNOOZE” when the alarm sounds either.

    • Common $en$e says:

whoa whoa whoaaaaaa Rubio will never avg 15ppg, he is a horrible shooter and can’t defend his position. He’ll still get exposed on a nightly basis.

  33. marttizzle says:

Good riddance! I can’t understand that a superstar caliber player that Love is couldn’t even get the Timberwolves past the first round of the playoffs, wait I meant a win in the playoff series, oh wait I meant into the playoffs, oh wait I meant above .500 in season, oh wait I meant a winning season. I don’t blame everything on him but at least a winning season would be nice for being the top 5 in scoring and rebounding! The West is strong but still you have to get a winning season, and the team was good not great!

  34. dgsdgfdhdfhd says:

win-win for both teams, Philly’s aiming for a really young core long-term rebuild!

  35. randomguy says:

Very interesting trade for the wolves. Thad Young pretty much is a better Bennet and trying to juggle their minutes will be a struggle, unless they play both at the 3 and 4 and lose all their outside shooting. Mbah a Moute didn’t add any shooting either, but he at least was a good defender and Shved was a pretty decent young guy. Like the move for the Sixers, they added more young developing players and got rid of their best player in anticipation of tanking another season.

  36. LBJ says:

just stopped by to remind everybody who needs attention more than anybody else.

  37. TheGreat1 says:

This is a very stupid trade every star we work with in Philly and develop them into good players Philly management trade them off Jure Holiday Andre igoudala Spencer hawks james Anderson when will it stop

  38. DR says:

The Wolves have done well from this. A lot of young talent for the next few years. Athletic and defensive

  39. Jimmy says:

    Who cares lol

  40. birdie says:

    Good deal for Minnesota!

  41. YungMussuBlack says:

Why would anyone trade for anyone from Philadelphia. #PLANFORFAILURE

    • Your pretty stupid says:

Yea because the Sixers plan is so horrible doing a complete re build and not settling to be a OK team but building the team with 1st round talent YEA BIG FAILURE AND THE FUNNY THING IS THEY SAID THE SPURS PLAN WAS A FAILURE TO WHAT HAPPEN THEIR TEAM????

    • guy says:

look at the stats and highlights before you type

    • gunner says:

thad young is a bum? him and mcw were the only consistent sixers and mcw was the damn rookie of the year.. thad young with bennet rubio wiggins pekovic is a nasty starting lineup

      • gunner says:

corey brewer will be starter instead of bennet for awhile tho til he can prove he can live up to his #1 draft pick
