Hang Time Podcast (Episode 172) Featuring John Dimopoulos

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — It’s not as foolish as you think ….

Spain as the favorite at the 2014 FIBA World Cup.

It’s not a joke.

It might be a little strong, but again, it’s not a joke.

The home team has every reason to believe that playing on home soil will give them a chance, not necessarily an advantage, to spring the upset against the reigning World and Olympic champion U.S. Team.

The U.S. Men’s Senior National Team has been wounded by defections and injuries in the lead up to the competition, which begins next week in Bilbao. Kevin Durant, Kevin Love and Paul George are all out of the competition for various reasons.

The U.S. still has the deepest and best roster (including Derrick Rose, Steph Curry, Anthony Davis and the NBA’s “best all-around player” in James Harden), but they won’t have the most experienced crew. And they won’t have the home court advantage. That belongs to the Gasols and Spain, the team international hoops guru John Dimopoulos of www.EuroJohnBall.com suggests on Episode 172 of the Hang Time Podcast, should go into the competition with all of the confidence in the world.

We dive in with the latest headlines around the NBA, TNT’s Charles Barkley doing his #ALSMarshmallow/IceBucketChallenge, a peak ahead at the 2014 FIBA World Cup and more on Episode 172 of the Hang Time Podcast featuring John Dimopoulos of EuroJohnBall.com:

  1. trullols says:

Don’t forget Spain. Gasol & Gasol, Ibaka, Ricky Rubio, Jose Calderón, the European MVP and Ex-NBA Sergio Rodriguez, Rudy Fernandez, etc etc.
USA must fight hard to win, no doubt.

  2. trullols says:

    Hi everybody,
Please don’t forget the players of Spain: Gasol & Gasol are probably the most complete pair of centers in the world … Then Ricky Rubio, Calderón or Serge Ibaka … And others who where NBA players like Navarro or Rudy Fernandez …
Probably USA team is the favorite one, … but it’s not so easy defeat Spain.

  3. kenny says:

USA gold Spain silver Argentina bronze

  4. MigueL says:

gonna be a great tournament, go USA !

  5. Redball4 says:

I now see that this is a quote from Harden himself and a legitimate insertion of light topical humor into the article.

  6. Redball4 says:

I find “the NBA’s ‘best all-around player’ in James Harden” hard to fathom given his lack of competence on defense. While I would find a claim of his being the best all-around offensive player questionable, his defense (half the game) make the claim beyond question false.

  7. Ba_lon_ces_to says:

No. The favorite team is the USA National Team. There is no doubt.
That doesn´t mean that another teams could beat USA: Brazil, Lithuania, France, Argentina, Australia, Croatia, Greece, … But with Derrick Rose, Irving, Klay, Curry, Davis, … so young, so prepared, there are only a few options. In Spain Pau, Navarro, Calderon, Reyes, are older and tired, only Marc and Ibaka are in the best condition.

    • Charly says:

You clearly don’t know FIBA basketball… I agree to say that US are favourite… but the strengh of the spanish doesn’t come from their NBA players… And they’ve played together for a looooonnng time now

      • charles says:

There is no way this team USA will win it at all. I am a fan of team USA, our best result will be semi-final.
Which US player has high rank thank the two Gasol (Rose still not healthy).
        Rubio/Calderon vs Rose/Harden
Paul Gasol/Ibaka/Marc Gasol vs Plumbee/Cousins/Kenneth F or Davis

      • Ba_lon_ces_to says:

        Dear Charly:
Why dou you think that? I’m spanish and I know FIBA basketball. Calderón, Pau, Marc, Ricky, Ibaka and Claver are NBA players. Rudy, Navarro, Sergio Rodríguez were NBA players. Only Llull, Felipe, Abrines have never played in NBA. So it’s very difficult that the strength of the spanish team come from their FIBA players (only three).
