Report: Wizards, Gortat agree to $60 million deal

VIDEO: John Wall is glad to have Marcin Gortat back in the fold in Washington

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — Teams hunting for a quality big man on the free agent market can cross Washington Wizards center Marcin Gortat off of the wish list. Gortat and the Wizards have agreed to a five-year, $60 million deal, according to multiple reports.

Gortat is one of two priority unrestricted free agents for the Wizards, who are also trying to keep Trevor Ariza in the fold (as All-Star point guard John Wall mentioned above).

Gortat played a huge role in the Wizards’ playoff run last season, averaging 13.2 points and 9.5 rebounds for a surprise team that made it to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Signing Gortat was definitely a good move for the Wizards. With the playoff experience they got last season, and the veterans they have on the team, will surely help this young team. However, the only part of their game I see missing is learning to win at home. Once they figure that out, they are going to be a dangerous team!

  2. Carlo says:

It was a mandatory choice for the Wiz, although the huge price reflects the lack of choice among big men.
Unfortunatley for him, Gortat is way too necessary to “average” teams like the Wiz and not-so-necessary to top teams to hope for going to a title-contender. This contract could mean for him to spend the rest of his career without a serious run to a ring.

  3. squala96 says:

Yuck, he shouldn’t have been blinded with megabucks, better off getting less but playing for a much better team. The Washington only made it to the playoffs because eight other East teams were worse; they won’t even get close to a spot had they been in the West. The Heat would have been better off with him than that poser CB1, a four that’s been playing the two ever since.

  4. lakers says:

bad deal…to much money for an average player..let the big spending summer begin..$6 million per year is perfect for a player who averages about 14 points per game

  5. imissthethunder says:

Wizards 1, Miami 0 (for not getting him). Yeah!!!

  6. Shawn Kemp no. 1 says:

love Gortat, but that’s just a little bit too much for him. 8-10 mil. a year is more like it

  7. Teams wishing to pay me 60 millions can cross me off their list. I won’t take less than 100 million. Now if only I was 7 foot.

  8. Chris says:

I’m pretty sold on the wizards as a threat in the east with more experience under their belt. I love Gortats game! I’m a spurs fan but it’ll be nice to have a team to watch in the Miami run eastern conference for once.

  9. Ric says:

Good Deal! Wiz should keep Nene and Gortat together. Their hopes on digging deep into the playoffs, realistically fall on their shoulders. It’s hard to find quality big men, much more a duo, in the NBA today. ANd the Wizards are just fortunate enough to have these two in the team. Now if they can bring Ariza for the added sting to their defense.. and the next problem for the Wiz is filling up their bench with good role players.

  10. A.J. says:

This and that Livingston deal with the Warriors slay me. The owners complained and complained and complained about paying out to much in guaranteed deals, and yet here we are, it’s still the same old, same old fiscal irresponsibility of dumb GMs and bozo owners.

  11. mee(a)t says:

    he deserves it
The Nene and Gortat duo lives on

  12. TheKush says:

Gortat is light on his feet which tells me he’s in shape and probably won’t get injured from his body deteriorating! Hopefully he stay healthy. 12 million for a big man that can run give you offense and defense every night isn’t that bad a deal
