Fan Night 1-On-1: D-Rose vs. Kyrie

VIDEO: Kyrie Irving is an Eastern Conference All-Star starter this season

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — They were supposed to be the future at the point guard position, rivals for years to come. But things don’t always work out the way they are supposed to. And for Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose and Cleveland Cavaliers star Kyrie Irving, we’ve never had the division rivals healthy enough simultaneously to really compare and contrast their games in real-time.

Thankfully for all of us, we get to make our theoretical comparisons between the two with NBA TV’sΒ Fan Night 1-on-1 Tournament, and we’re down to the final stages with this matchup.

Take both of these guys at their best and it’s a magical pairing, two young and explosive players with games different enough that the beauty of their matchup would be found in the contrast. Rose attacks the rim and finishes as well as any player at the position but might not be as crafty with the ball as Irving, whose handle and deep shooting range set him apart from the pack.

It’s as even as any matchup we’ve seen during the Fan Night 1-On-1 Tournament:

Join the conversation on who would win via social media (Tweet @NBATV #1on1Rose or #1on1Kyrie). The results will be announced during NBA TV’s postgame coverage of the Fan Night game between the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets (8 p.m. ET, NBA TV) by TNT’s and NBA TV’s Ernie Johnson, Greg Anthony, my main man Rick Fox and Chris Webber (via FaceTime).

VIDEO: Derrick Rose goes off during the exhibition season for the Bulls

  1. BallingFor Real says:

Kyrie all day. 1on1 with no pick and rolls and fastbreaks…I’m taking Kyrie Irving over a healthy MVP Rose anyday but only in a 1on1. Now 5on5, im taking Rose.

  2. mo says:

Kyrie would kill him….. all drose can do is take it in.. kyrie is an all around player. Kyrie can score from anywhere. Drose does not have a jump shot for his life.

  3. dustydreamnz says:

Derrick Rose at his best definetly. I’m an Irving fan but Rose has the better defence to start with.
Derrick Rose will be back in the NBA because he’s a hard worker.

  4. Kevin says:

    D. Rose is bigger, more athletic, and a better defender. He would occasionally be able to stop Kyrie, and there’s no way Kyrie could stop him. Rose hands down.

The real matchup would be a healthy D. Rose VS a healthy Westbrook.

  5. steven from cleveland says:

as much as id LOVE to vote KI on this being a Cavs fan, its D-Rose ONLY if we are talking healthy MVP Rose and without the 2 knee injuries in the past 2 years.

another year or 2 KI prolly have him though πŸ˜‰ kids gotta learn to be that allstar ALL THE TIME. hes got it MOST of the time, but that isnt good enough to be remembered forever like #23.

    1) Rose, 2) Lillard 3) Wall 4) Irving

  7. Ballsohard says:

In any way it would be close. But if they both played each other as a rookie, Rose would win. Kyrie is flamboyant and smooth on the handles, plus he has a wet stroke. But rose is a smarter player and could adapt the many aspects of his game to whatever situation it is. Either way both are extremely talented and i respect them.

  8. BASKET_ball says:

Kyrie Irving would obviously beat Rose 1 on 1. Rose is over hyped , thats why some people think he would win.

  9. Marty says:

Wtth, Rose didn even deserve that mvp they went to the second round of the playoffs with hims second right without him lets be serious guys!

    • The MVP was regular season mvp not finals mvp and he lead bulls with best record and was true leader on bulls team and most valuable player during reg season. hope Rose comes back strong and doesnt get injured! The East Need him

  10. the realness says:

Taking both of these players at their best, former MVP, Derrick Rose is the obvious choice. Will we see that Derrick Rose ever again? Who is to say Kyrie Irving won’t reach that level of play sometime within his career?
This is a hypothetical question that doesn’t need to be answered. Derrick Rose had an incredible first few season in the NBA and is king of this fantasy 1-on-1, but I’d take Kyrie in reality

  11. JJ says:

Irving=MOST OVERRATED PLAYER in the NBA. The guy has no defence, 20p 5a type of guy on one of the worst team in the league. I can think of so many PG who are better than him right now. NO MATCH, Rose will rip him apart EVEN when he is not completely healthy.

  12. Rose is very good, but Kyrie Irving has a long way to go and he is already a star so no doubt Kyrie has it.

  13. T-REX says:

Kyrie is good, but you cant compare him with D-Rose. Healthy DRose is top 2 PG (CP3 ahead of him).

  14. #BULLS says:

It would be a good match up- with both of them doing athletic moves and tricky layups. But I think Rose would block some of them and possibly dunk on Kyrie because he bigger and more athletic. I can give the edge to rose because he bigger and just as fast– if not faster. With no screens, Rose should stay in front of him with ease and make him take bad shots all night long. Mike Brown might call a timeout for him.

  15. Jason will says:

Ah, no game since D-rose would be out during 1on1 game due to elbow injury

  16. frankie says:

d rose would OWN kyrie i mean i still like kyries play style but d rose is just too GOOD

  17. MyWay says:

Toss up game.. Kyrie has better shooting than D.Rose and the finesse. Rose has the explosiveness and strength.

  18. okc2014 says:

A healthy Derrick Rose, for sure.

  19. Leo says:

Derrick Rose way better didn’t we saw that at the start of this season and Rose was now trying to get his step back. He also shut down Kyrie too.

  20. Chris Santos says:

I’d take an MVP, who willed his team to the best record in the NBA and to the eastern conference finals over a PG that hasn’t even been in the playoffs. Drose over Kyrie. Kyrie has handles and is flashy, but Drose, he can take over games with power, speed, will, and athleticism.

  21. Michael says:

It’s 1-on-1, where the offense is crucial. With the physical advantage, Rose with no doubt.

  22. Akshar Patel says:

Kyrie is good especially as he has the jump shot better then rose, however a healthy rose who is up there with durrant, james, and the others is much much better than kyrie who is just starting out

  23. Kyrie Irving is nice but Derrick Rose, a healthy Derrick Rose in MVP form mind you, is on another level. 1-on-1 or 5-on-5, Rose has defenders on their heels on every possession.

  24. Justin Liang says:

Kyrie Irving Uncle Drew all day c:
