Durant To 60 Minutes: Tired Of Settling

In the college football race for the BCS national championship game, Ohio State and Auburn are in a war of words and a wrestling match for the spot behind Florida State.

But Kevin Durant is fed up with being No. 2 behind LeBron James.

It’s a sentiment that the Thunder All-Star has expressed before, but discusses his feelings of discontent again in an interview with James Brown on “60 Minutes Sports,” scheduled to air tonight (10 ET) on Showtime.

“…People would just always say that it’s cool, you’re top three, that’s cool. It’s alright to be a top-three player in the world. There’s billions of people in this world. You can be top three, that’s pretty cool…I mean…I’m just tired of settling for that, tired of saying that, tired of hearing it.”

The feature story includes an interview with Durant’s mother, the one responsible for instilling his work ethic and good guy image that keeps his ego in check and has made him beloved throughout the NBA and in Oklahoma City particularly.

There is never a peep out of Durant that indicates the least bit of unhappiness with the Thunder or the small market of OKC and he is, after all, signed through the 2015-16 season.

These are no ominous rumblings of a star player looking down the line for a free-agent way out or a shortcut to the top of a mountain. It’s just a guy who is not afraid to say that he won’t truly be happy until he sheds the amiable runner-up image and become No. 1.

One problem with KD is that he is the number 2 player in the world and with a good margin; the other problem is that the number 1 is LBJ and with the same margin; I think nobody disputes who is the nº1 and the nº2 in the world….lebron is to KD as KD is to nº3 and I don’t know who is nº3 (CP3, Howard, Paul George, Harden etc)
Look at the stats of lebron; his numbers, specially in fg% are off the charts.
Wilt/Robertson,Jabbar, Magic/bird, Jordan, Shaq, and Lebron, every generation has its player….

    • sirsparhawk says:

Yea he takes smart shots, true, but I still dont think he is better, only a smarter player, which he should be, he has been in the league for twice as long as Durant. Even if Durant never wins a ring when he hits LBJs time in the league he will be recognized as being better than lebron in his prime

  2. rr says:

Kevin is far better than Lebron James but Lebron has ESPN and the media pump him as the best player. With those working
for you as Lebron James has, it is almost impossible to get the #1 ranking.

  3. Ali says:

For 6 years MJ couldn’t get it done even though as an individual he was having amazing success. His organization, the Bulls, brought him 2 all stars in Horace Grant and Scottie Pippen along with Phil Jackson. They went on to get three peat. LeBron does the same thing except he didn’t get players to come to him they went to the Heat. Which makes more sense because the Heat under Pat Riley are a solid organization. Cavs invested in Bynum as a legit player, c’mon man. Either way call it what you want but I don’t hear anyone calling Scottie a sell out or Kareem a sell out.

  4. Miami Heat Fan says:

KD must beat the HEAT in the finals before he can prove his #1…

  5. Mongols says:

wade is better than KD in his prime.

  6. zamiLo says:

    M.O.T.I.V.A.T.I.O.N.

  7. DR BBAL says:

MJ was in the early stage of his carreer also a lonely scorer, when LBJ is old KD will be considerd as the best player, MJ didn’t win either in his first few years because of the other great teams back then, same story for KD

  8. justin says:

Durant has been showing this better than never…
I think now he is the best than LeBron…

  9. stfu says:

if you honestly look at teams that have one title’s they all had help when kobe won multiple title’s with shaq no-one complained when ray Allen, paul pierce, and Kevin garnet, teamed up no-one blinked a eye. even Michel jordan had tremendous help.(he still is the greatest), when a young immature lebron James met a sound older spurs team that did not make many mistakes in the finals in Cleveland it was evident how bad that team really was. i Don’t blame him for leaving i just think he proceeded wrong,

  10. cj says:

yall are dumb, lebron plays every team in the west so where he plays does not matter. durant is not better than lebron,

  11. HTown says:

OMG, Tapk8, OneVet, Cj2smooth are you telling me in order to be #1 you have to first win a title; Seriously! Sooo Robert Horry, Kenny Smith, Steve Kerr, Jud Buchler, John Paxton, Horace Grant, Bill Wellington and Stacy King (just to name a few) were all better than Charles Barkley, Gary Payton, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Dominique Wilkins, and Patrick Ewing (to name a few)? All y’all are smoking some stank doo doo… Championships have nothing to with being #1; titles are won as a team; it’s all about stats baby. KD should be #1 hands down. People were riding Lebron’s nizzies before he even made it into the league. They put him on this “King James” pedestal…NOT! I’m more than positive if KD had the kind of supporting cast Lebron has he would win titles too. The madness has to stop. Oh and PalmOil Preference KD would NEVER win a title with his hometown Wizards…

  12. tanibanana says:

Durant fans are so numb-bitter peeps..
Hey.. even Durant himself agree he is only 2nd to LBJ..

  13. sirsparhawk says:

This is just my opinion but I think Durant is more talented and skilled than Lebron, but Lebron is more developed atm than KD. KD and LBJ are both freaks of nature, LBJ is stronger and a bulldozer, KD is long, athletic, and swift and an incredible shooter. I admit my biased towards KD but I appreciate both players. For those saying lebron shoots a better % therefor making him beter have clearly never touched as basketball. They play different games, Lebron is a decent midrange shooter and mediocre 3p shooter but he has a great finish around the basket and can knock down anything within 5 feet of the hoop. Durant can hit a shot from anywhere in the gym, he isnt as limited, and he is just as athletic, lebron has his strength and KD has his length. The difference is, Durant takes most of his shots from 17-25 feet, Lebron takes most of this from 10 and under, as seen by the leagues many centers that shoot above 60% it makes a huge difference. Stephan Curry shoots a lower % than Lebron, you gonna tell me that Lebron is a better shooter? Lebrons supporting cast is also superior to Durants, he gets a washed up center, a mediocre PF, a mediocre SG, and a PG who has potential but has the basketball IQ of a lamp post.

If you watch both play you will see that the shooting % doesnt show everything, Durant takes shots he has too, because his only other scoring option is westbrook who shoots like 25% from the field and is the next Kobe. EIther way if you wanna bring up shooting % then thats like saying Dwight Howard is better than both because his FG% is better. People forget this is a team game, no 1 player wins on his own anymore, Kobe is proof. Lebron left Cleveland because he was the only player there worth noting. The best team wins not the best player. Durant keeps improving too, this season is evidence, in a few years he will reign supreme over Lebrons stats.

    • Ali says:

Mediocre PF? You mean Ibaka that’s averaging a doublu-double and has led the leauge in blocks the past 2 seasons. Efficency is key here. LeBron avgs less shots, less minutes, less free throws and still avgs about 2 points less than KD. Also LeBron is’nt a “decent” mid range and three-point shooter any more. Durant has made one more three pointer this year than LeBron and has taken 20 more three pointers. The past two seasons he has added that into his game. Going back to the supporting cast he had Harden just two years ago along with all of these “Mediocre” and “dumb” basketball players. Don’t even hate on Westbrook, as you noted OKC’s offense playcalling at times is just bad and Westbrook has to take some bail out shots as well but unlike Durant he dosen’t get the same percentage to fall. I gurantee you if LeBron had this same supproting cast back in Cleavland they would been to the Finals multiple years and probably won couple.

KD WILL BECOME THE KARL MALONE OF HIS ERA

HAVING THE UNFORTUNATE LUCK OF PLAYING DURING THE SAME TIME AS THE JORDAN OF THIS TIME

    LEBRON RAMON JAMES

  16. Taha Shahid says:

Lebron is by far the best player in the nba. He might not have the numbers that kd has but there are some states that can’t be tracked. People forget that lebron beat a power house piston team to make it to his first final. That pistion team could easily match to any team in the west now. Back than lebron wasn’t that good if you compare him to now and the supporting cast he had was pretty bad. i have love for kd, paul george and all the other great players in the nba rite now but lebron is someone we only seen few times i history. They only come once every blue moon. No one rite now in the nba will ever catch lebron.

  17. StopThiss says:

UNderdog- Stop talking bout stats when were not even half way wait untill after all start weekend thats when we’ll see who has better stats of the second half of the season and who wins it all, lebron has been beating kobe in stats for years but kobe had better stats for the end of season and playoff time.. dont forget about winning because if winning doesnt matter than lebron wouldve been considered the best player sincce 06

  18. lakerslakerslakers says:

not a lebron fan and not a durant fan but he is not as good as lebron.

  19. john rallos says:

even if hes still not yet a 100% this season.. their team still has the best start in franchise history.. LBJ is better than durant individually. lebron makes his teammates better and also himself coz he is a team player. while durant just want to get better all by himself so he could be no.1. not a team player.. thats the truth

  20. ringo rallos says:

even if hes still not yet a 100% this season.. their team still has the best start in franchise history.. • NurseBob says:

Their start is against some pretty crumby East teams and they still managed to loos to Philly, and Toronto

  21. ringo rallos says:

those stats are not yet the 100% lebron this season. just wait till he gets 100% but still LBJ still no.1

  22. HellYeah says:

Yeah KD is better thats why the heat beat them in the finals

  23. husnain says:

underdog if you really care about stats mention the playoffs

    • Oh, Come on.. says:

Yeah, he should mention that series Lebron put up against the Mavs. No, really, he should. He was already the best in the world at that point, supposedly, care to post the numbers?

    • jimi says:

How did Kobe do in the finals when he lost to Boston. Shot 44% from the field with 4.5 turnovers a game. Lebron did not play well at all in that series. But some of the other greats of this generation have fallen short as well

  24. TR says:

    Come to lakers!

  25. tapk8 says:

Well Durant is for sure the best scorer in the league . The only thing Durant needs is to win a title and trading for omar asik and releasing Kendrick Perkins ( terrible center nowadays ) is probably what OKC needs .

Asik for OKC and Kendrick Perkins + something to Houston .

  26. Percentages plz says:

I’d just like to note a couple of key stats that the KD fans are overlooking in this comparison, percentages, and minutes. Yes if taken at face value KD’s stats are currently better than LBJ but then you see that LBJ gets his 26ppg with 59.5 FG% and 47.4 3FG% while only playing 35.5 minutes a game. KD on the other hand shoots 45.3% from the field and 36.5% from outside the arc while playing 39.2 minutes a game. LBJ plays less minutes and shoots less shots but still gets an amazing stat line, that is why LBJ is better than KD right now.

  27. janmykelg says:

well, you forgot to include the whole stats line
    durant – 39.2 mpg 28.2 ppg 8.2 rpg 5.4 apg 1.4 spg 0.7 bpg .453 fg% .365 3fg%
    lebron – 35.6 mpg 26.0 ppg 5.8 rpg 6.3 apg 1.1 spg 0.4 bpg .595 fg% .474 3fg%

see? just don’t be biased and post only those stats lines that durant are ahead. durant shots a lot but lebron is more effecient.

  28. D WADE says:

KD deserved the MVP more than D Rose. D Rose will retire in a couple of seasons due to his upcoming injuries that have been predicted

  29. Oh, Come on.. says:

KD’s already number 1 in most people’s minds that don’t talk through microphones or submit articles. People can see what’s happnening, even though the driven hype does get a few to commit without question. The hype train is building behind Paul George now as Lebron’s eventual successor for the top spot, and seems to have skipped KD altogether. Funny how the NBA marketing works. And poor DRose….they tried, they really did try to get him to take the baton….but his body just keeps failing him. Lebron didn’t overtake Kobe until they were 25 and 32 years old respectively. KD’s already at 25, and might have to wait a year or maybe even 2 until Lebron starts his eventual slide off the mountain peak of the media’s praise.. Although, by then it might be PGeorge that overtakes KD, yet the media will rank Durant over George and most will buy into it, just as they do now.

  30. Abe says:

KD you are one of the great BB players in the NBA. However LJ is much better than you. You already said it. Consistency! He demonstrated why he is better than any of the current players. He is all rounded player. If I were you I’ll keep trying to be better and let the public judge my Skill and Talent. Don’t forget others are also coming.

  31. carl says:

People who are unhappy about Lebron’s lack of loyalty to his old team should apply the same standard to the team. Is the team loyal to players who aren’t the best? They trade them away and no one thinks that’s wrong. Why then can’t a star player like Lebron move to a different team after Cleveland couldn’t get its act together in the many years he spent there?

  32. jake s. says:

    Love you KD.

  33. dyoks says:

This sentiment is more like a propaganda for his top spot/MVP campaign. Just like Derrick Rose’s “Why can’t I be the MVP?”

  34. cp10 says:

    Durantula!

  35. freal says:

Sometimes life isn’t just about working the hardest. Most everyone is created equal…but there’s one that comes along every now and then whose exceptional.

Reminds me of Mozart and the other great composer guy (forgot his name) in the movie “Amadeus”. The other guy was a great composer, one of the hardest working and highest skilled when it came to perfecting his craft. He wrote songs for the King and was highly respected and acknowledged as one of the great composers who would stand the test of time. There was one guy, though, who was the best, who was a genuine genius, and that was Mozart. The other guy tried so hard to top Mozart but even he, in the end, understood that with Mozart, it was something beyond just hard work (which no doubt is essential don’t get me wrong), it was beyond mere talent and scrupulous attention to his craft, the only way to describe it was that Mozart was innately built of something, instilled with something, given something from God, or the universe, or mother nature, or the fairy king and queen (whatever you prefer) that could not be matched or even comprehended.

  36. John says:

While we all can recognize the incredible talent that KD has, this is a league that recognizes winners… He maybe the next Karl Malone (one of the greatest scores of all time, a great teammate), but he won’t ever be in the Lebron or Jordan conversation until he gets some Championships under his belt, that is what makes a #1, I commend Lebron for understanding the best way to win a championship is to surround yourself with people who make you a better player/leader. He just needs to continually take his game and the rest of his teams to another level when it actually matters. Best of luck to him!

    • LOL says:

Until he wins a championship like Lebron, so you want him to go to the Rockets after his contract expires and “win a championship like Lebron” ans take the easy way out of winning a championship. Lebron is a joke and can’t win without the refs

      • Oh, Come on.. says:

Yeah, we already saw what Lebron is during all those Cleveland years. He’s so good, that he quit, blamed everyone else, faked injury, packed his bags to hold DWade’s and Bosh’s hand in Miami. Awesome legacy.

      • sick says:

        jealous haters… stop crying hahaha

    • NurseBob says:

True winners don’t need to go to another team that is built already for them to say they were built around. They make other players better. When you build from the ground up you get the Spurs, true champions who have become a great “team” team. You don’t need a clutch player when you have a team. Now the Heat are the team free agents flock to just for the possibility of a championship (Allen, Birdman, Oden, Beasly, Battier, Lewis. With a reputation like that they will be a top team for years, unless next summer the big three decide to bail. Wade will retire in the next 2-3 years because of his knees anyway and it’s downhill from there.

    • jimi says:

For all the indivduals hating on Lebron for leaving let me explain something to you. No one wins a championship by themselves. Jordan had pippen who was drafted to the bulls. Magic had Kareem, Worthy, Cooper, Rambis, A C Green, b scott. Kobe had shaq then had two guys who averaged double doubles in the crucial games, PAU and Bynum. If good players wanted to go to Clevland then he may have had a better opportunity to win. You think Kobe would have made it to the finals with ira newble and Donyell Marshall. Nope. Durant found out last year how hard it is to do it by yourself.

  37. Feekin says:

Excited for the game tonight. So far, Wesley Matthews MVP. We’ll see.

  38. LRF says:

My wife likes KD. My preference is LBJ. I understand that KD is fed up of being no 2 in the league. But while LBJ is playing, it is impossible for KD to reach the mountain top as no 1. That’s a fact. That’s life. That’s the NBA.

  39. Richard says:

Lebron is and has been the best player in the comp for the last half decade. He dominates each facet of the game like no other player. He is the complete p[layer. He is the best player. If anything, Durant will have to continue to improve to maintain his No. 2 position, with the rapid rise of George as a genuine superstar.

  40. Dude says:

Unless durant puts on 30 lbs, develop a better court vision, get a great post-up game, play better defense, he will always be under lebron

  41. KD>LBJ in skills says:

KD is better skilled nba player compared to leBron but leBron is has god given talent .

    • C Breezy Heat Fan since 96 says:

I love the Heat and I am glad that we are finally winning. KD is a beast and I think he would do much better in the East. I do not think he will win it in the West. If KD would go to Indiana, its all over for my Heat .. lol . Since that will not happen, LETS GO HEAT !!!

      • NurseBob says:

If KD played in the East he would have an average of 45 points per game. The East is rather irrelevant at this time. they only have 4 teams or so who have won 9 or more games. Compare that to the West. When Miami starts playing teams like Portland, San Antonio, Houston, LAC, OKC. We will see where they stand.

      • MV3 says:

nurse bob, thanks for saying portland :D. most people are still underrating them

      • jimi says:

The last top defensive teams in the past 5 years have been in the east u dumb nuts. Indiana, Boston, Miami, Orlando with DHoward, The top teams in the west do not play as good as defense as the ones in the east

  42. ism ill says:

This is kind of reminiscent of the times when Jordan was at his best. Hall of Famers who played like MVPs or champions often finished second and we tend to forgive them because it was the Jordan-days. I am not saying LeBron is Jordan but he is such a stellar player that I can imagine Kevin Durant getting robbed of even more appreciation and accolades although in another time, he would earn it all. It tastes a bit stale that a player as phenomenal as Durant does not get what he deserves but let’s enjoy seeing LeBron – a player that combines excellence with having fun and is a great team player and athlete.
Durant still has many years and with his game he could become the best shooter after Dirk, because he is one of the few who can create a shot from anywhere due to his size. Even when he becomes older.

  43. boston rules says:

    OVERRATED

    • Oh, Come on.. says:

Yeah, we know, we know. Boston’s been overrated since the end of 80′s. 1 title in 25 years? That’s about as overrated as it gets.

  44. Yeah Right says:

KD is a better scorer, true. But Lebron is wayy better in terms of a complete basketball player. Face it, you are ranked under Lebron. Stop crying.

    • underdog says:

      Kevin Durant
      28.2 PPG, 8.3 REB, 5.4 AST, 1.4 STL 0.8 BLK

      LeBron James
      26.0 PPG, 5.8 REB, 6.3 AST 1.1 STL 0.4 BLK

Durant is leading LeBron in offense and in every defensive category (REB/STL/BLK) and LeBron is still waaaaaay better as a complete player than Durant? Stats don’t show it… and don’t tell me stats don’t matter coz it’ll be ironic

    • Los Heat says:

you are definitely correct pedro… lebron is waywayway far better than durant.. he is a playmaker and make his team mates better..durant? huh! he is just a pure scorer even when they are leading by tons of points, he still want to pile up points..unlike lebron coach spo normally bench him espcially in the 4th quarter..got it dudes?

      • NurseBob says:

Remember who LBJ is getting his stats against. It’s like having a college player playing in a high school league. His stats should be double at this point. The East doesn’t have anyone besides Indiana who even matter.

    • kekekekekek says:

How many shots does lebron take every game? 14-15 shots maybe? and shoots it at an dazzling 60 percent, if lebron took 20-21 shots he would lead the league in scoring.

Lebron is just better than durant in every aspect of the game right now,

@underdog you can post those stats of yours all day, you are missing that lebron crushes durant´s shooting numbers. and he plays less minutes.

  45. smub99 says:

Its unfortunate for KD that he has come in Lebron’s era, LBJ is a once in a generation player, and as great a scorer KD, he will never have the all around game that LBJ possesses, so I don’t see how I could ever be considered number 1.

IMHO I think Paul George is the closest thing to LBJ in this league, he is my number 2 right now. This season he has proven to be a monster at both ends of the floor, and in all facets of the game. The scary thing is he is just getting started.

    • underdog says:

you lost credibility when you said George is the closest thing to LeBron.. and KD is actually a better all-around player than LeBron this season..

      Kevin Durant
      28.2 PPG, 8.3 REB, 5.4 AST, 1.4 STL 0.8 BLK

      LeBron James
      26.0 PPG, 5.8 REB, 6.3 AST 1.1 STL 0.4 BLK

      Paul George
      24.9 PPG, 5.9 REB, 3.4 AST, 2.2 STL, 0.4 BLK

      numbers don’t lie..

      • NurseBob says:

Lebron is a good player but he gets way to much credit. He is up in all starts but he leads in nothing. A guy that size should at least lead in something. Every Hall of Fame player lead the league in something, didn’t just do great at several things, and if you think titles and doing pretty good make you number one then Robert Horry should be ranked right with LBJ

      • jjjj says:

why didnt you include MPG and shoooting percentage? then you would see who is the best player.

  46. PalmOil Preference says:

OKD!!!!! When he’s done with this story book love affair with Oklahoma. Said it once said it twice I am going to keep saying it.

KD IS COMING HOME TO THE WIZARDS TO BUILD HIS OWN LEGACY OR TO THE LAKERS TO CONTINUE THE BANNER TRADITION.

Respect him for saying it and not shying away from it.

    • Oh, Come on.. says:

Depends how thing go in OKC at the time. If they win a title in the next 3 years there, why leave? Especially for Wizards. Lakers? Maybe. I don’t think it’s much of a coincidence the Lakers have certain someone’s $25 mil coming off the books that summer.

  47. Boston Fan says:

i want kd to be better than lebron but he won’t if his team don’t develop a post game and get ate up by memphis or the spurs or any other team with good low post offense or defense

    • asdf says:

Why dont durant develop a post game? He is a psyical beast, and would dominate even more with a solid post game, Thunder arent gonna win if they stay out on the peremiter and shoot jumpers.

Ibaka should learn how to play with the back to the basket aswell.

  48. yeahhhh says:

@ the spectator. The thunder lost to the Grizzlies last year, not the Rockets.

  49. John says:

HUH? Shouldn’t he consider himself lucky to also not be starving in some corrupt 3rd world country, or that he has one of the largest incomes a human can make? Are you drowning in debt? How bad IS your quality of life when ranked below LeBron. For crying out loud, get over yourself, you make 18 million a year! Grow up!

    • Anthony is shaking his head at heat fans that aren't knowledgable about basketball says:

truth be told Paul George is a better two way player than KD. KD is just an offensive powerhouse. The Lebron Hatred has to stop. There is no such thing as a easy championship. People who think that shouldn’t even post here.

      • Oh, Come on.. says:

Lebron took the easy way out and cheated the payroll system to get more talent. Titles don’t get much easier than that.

      • skrutz says:

Cheated the payroll? You mean, taking a cut so he can have teammates? I think thats a fantastic quality – where some players *COUGH KOBE COUGH* think its unreasonable to earn less than 20-something-million a season, and wonders why he’s surrounded by second rate reserves?

  50. thespectator says:

kd is good but not great, to be great u need rings, Kd couldnt even win by himself against the rockets in last years posteason…lets be real here, we know that miami without dwayne or bosh and just lbj and the heatles woulda beat the rockets, he has the skills but has a long way to go, a few more seasons of L’s will eventually get him a ring, that and lebron headin down his prime years..

    • LOL says:

No they wouldn’t, KD is Number 1, if he had the supporting cast Lebron did in the finals vs. the Mavericks he would’ve won and flopped like Lebron

      • yyyyy says:

I just got to laugh at you man, Lebron dominated in the finals.

Durant is great, Lebron is just greater right now, lebron is averaging 26 on 60% shooting, that is greatness.

not a heat fan just being real, Durant will win a championship eventually. durant westbrook and ibaka are to talented together not to win one.

    • NurseBob says:

They wouldn’t even have made it to the finals without wade. They should have been beaten in the quarter and semi finals. The other teams just choked last minute. Same thing happened to the spurs in the finals. If LBJ was in the West his numbers wouldn’t be near what they are. The bottom two teams in the West are better than half of the teams in the East and they aren’t very good. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out

    • MV3 says:

lebron without wade and bosh wouldnt even make the playoffs in the west

  51. Bob M says:

It seems that Westbrook has been making the big plays lately. KD is supremely gifted in the physical sense. He can’t be stopped; he’s too long and has a suuuuuuper high release point on his shot. It is the mental game that needs work. A couple of years ago, commentators wanted to see him come up big late in games and take more shots. He still doesn’t do that.
The great ones play best when the game is on the line. Think MJ, LeBron, and Kobe. They deliver when the game is on the line. String a few games together when he scores 20 in the 4th of a tight game and the MVP and top player talk will return.
Right now, he’s a young Dirk Nowitski.

    • Oh, Come on.. says:

You can’t talk about being the best with the game on the line and then mention Lebron. That’s as big of an oxymoron as can be. He’d rather flop than make a real play. You know he only drives automatics, right? Lebron and clutch don’t go together at all.

      • Bob M says:

Oh, Come on, oh come on You know LeBron is the reigning, defending, 2X MVP, 2X Finals MVP, and 2x NBA Champion. Last month he average 35 ppg and 70% FG. That’s greatness.

    • amitpal says:

You obviously don’t know anything about basketball. First off u mention lebron being great in the clutch when just 1 year ago everyone talked about how he chokes in clutch situation. Durant has been clutch his whole career. In the last couple years he’s had more game winners in the playoffs then anyone else. How that not clutch? He’s come up on the biggest stage and hits the biggest shots. He’s the clutchest player in the nba right now. When the coaches voted on who they want to give the ball to on the final play of a game, they chose durant. Not kobe or lebron or melo but durant. So what r u talking about.

    • Justin M says:

There no way Kevin Durant is a young Dirk Nowitzki. KD is much more athletic and a better pure scorer.

  52. cj2smooth says:

KD has to win a couple rings b4 rated #1. KD is my favorite player he has progressed every year but the guy lebron even though he took the easy way by going to miami is a freak of nature!

  53. Jorge says:

KD may eventually win an MVP and be seen as the best current player of basketball. He has the tool-set for that, he has the skills for that, he has had the blessing of health for that. The only problem he has is that there is another guy who has the same set of things going for him, and on top of that, he is actually winning championships.

I do not mean to disrespect KD at all, I admire him and it is frustrating to see him play against any team I happen to root for, because he can single-handedly change the outcome of the game, but at this point in time, MVP trophies are LeBron’s to lose.

I just hope that this hunger to be recognized as #1 just fuels his drive to become a better basketball player for the benefit of us all. Better players make for better entertainment and better sport.

  54. Josh White says:

Gunnin’ for that number 1 spot!

  55. RG23 says:

Love KD despite being a Bulls fan.
Awesome player and titles will be aplenty

  56. D. Sun says:

    Steph Curry is number 1

  57. ImJusSayin says:

Some of us already have KD above LJ just on character alone and even 1 title with OKC will mean more than 3 sell out titles anywhere else so don’t put too much emphasis on that.

    • Anthony is shaking his head at heat fans that aren't knowledgable about basketball says:

A title is a title man. People need to get out of their feelings.Lebron made the right decision to leave Cleveland.

      • Oh, Come on.. says:

There will always be asterisks next to his titles. Sellout titles is a correct description. And nobody will ever forget that.

    • Knowledge says:

Seriously, no one cares if YOU put asterisks next to his or anyone else’s titles. People are so delusional.

  58. Maoriplayer says:

Once he becomes a TRUE two way player he dosent deserve it, he’s improved but there’s a reason lebrons no. 1 and that’s cause he’s the does everything on the court at the top 5 level.

    • underdog says:

      LeBron
      5.8 REB, 1.1 STL, 0.4 BLK

      Durant
      8.3 REB, 1.4 STL, 0.8 BLK

and you’re saying that Durant is STILL NOT a TRUE 2-way player compared to LeBron.. Durant leads LeBron in every defensive category this season with a big lead in rebounds.. and don’t tell me stats don’t matter coz it’ll be ironic..

      • Oh, Come on.. says:

Underdog, put that on a t-shirt.

      • staticc says:

Being #1 is about consistency. Not about the first 20 games of one season. Look at Career stats of KD and LBJ, compare then come back here. You’ll see how wrong you are lmao

      • qq says:

Durant is a 7footer he should rebound more. but durant has improved alot, still an early season I think lebrons rebounding numbers will go up.

      • Ali says:

Stats do matter. But Harden is averaging 1.6 steals and 0.6 blocks per game so stats don’t tell the whole story. Defense isn’t just a stat that can be mesuered like offense. What stat shows that you are really good at closing out, that your help defense causes lots of turnovers, there’s not even a stat for charges taken. In order to gauge someones defense you just have to watch them play defense and from what I’ve seen LeBron is much more versatile and an overall better defender. Also let’s not forget that LeBron is playing and has been playing with a sore back and a tired body. His drive probably isn’t the sme as of right now.

  59. Frankie J says:

gotta remember he is still young, but with what he has achieved it feels like he is a veteran of this game. His best will come in the next four years and hopefully he can with a couple of rings with Westbrook. Too much talent to not win one

  60. Ravitch Chutiangtring says:

Kevin Durant is the new generation! He’s accomplishing more than Lebron did his first few years in the league #teamDURANT

    • John Byrd says:

How is he accomplishing more than LeBron? Wish people would stop hating on LBJ.. It’s getting old now. KD is hands down a better shooter then everyone in the league. It’s the only stat he will beat LBJ in when we look back at both their successful careers. Both are amazing players, but when has KD had to play anything other then a shooter? Say what you want, stats don’t lie. #StopTheHate

    • Dave says:

Lebron made it to the finals faster then Durant. And don’t forget it was Lebron and no other stars. We saw how Durant couldn’t carry his team last season in the playoffs when Westbrook went down.

      • /Sarcasm says:

Because the eastern conference has been such a close and competitive conference the previous 10 years…

      • Oh, Come on.. says:

EEEEEExactly. As demonstrated by the Spurs that year when they swept poor Lebron without even trying.

      • Johnny says:

Sarcasm is absolutely right. East is very easy compared to the West and has been for some time. You get an easier overall season to get a spot in the playoffs and it’s an easier road to the finals. By the time West gets to the finals they are much more worn.

      • chandler says:

Or any year. Look at it now, its worse than ever lol. Only 2 teams in the east have a record over .500. TWO. Compared to the west’s 9 at the moment. the LAKERS who are 9-9 can be 3rd in the east right now and they’re sitting in the 10th or 11th spot.

  61. Bird33 says:

Kevin…..I hope you get rated #1 (I believe you already are) without having to change who you are – that’s part of what makes you great. And thanks for keeping it old school….it’s about the we, not the me. I hope to see you in the finals.

  62. OneVet says:

Gotta win KD, a couple of titles at least

    • fino says:

Kevin is the number one jump shooter, Russell is a lot better player

      • NOOOOOOWAAAYYY says:

Ok.. Let’s see… Chris Paul is better than Russell Westbrook… But… Durant is better than Chris Paul, making Durant better than Russell Westbrook. Who is the “ace” or leader of the OKC thunders???? Durant and that shows how he is a better player…

    • DetFan04 says:

Lebron didn’t have to win anything before he was labeled the king. Not sure what’s changed since then.

    • Peter says:

Durant is better than Chris Paul? Debatable.

Chris Paul has a similar overall impact on his teams offense (by a combination of scoring and playmaking) only Paul actually plays defense too.

Durant is just a soft, whiney girl scout. Chris Bosh 2.0, just with more talent. I’m tired of hearing him whine. Did you ever hear Pippen complaining about being behind Jordan? Or Drexler, or Barkley, or Hakeem? No. Because unlike some people they weren’t selfish individuals who only cared about how the world saw them…they actually cared about winning. That’s why Durant will never win anything.

      • KareemOfTheCrop says:

Pippen played with Jordan why would he whine about being 2nd to him? Also it was pretty obvious he was second to him. Durant’s second to Lebron – his arch rival in the NBA. This is nothing but good for the sport to have two talented guys gunning for the same spot.
