Oscar “Ossie” Schectman, the New York Knicks guard that scored the first basket in NBA history in 1946, died Tuesday at 94 years old. The NBA world mourned his loss and remembered Schectman, and David Stern was one of the first to speak out.

“Ossie Schectman was a true NBA pioneer,” Stern said. “Playing for the New York Knickerbockers in the 1946-47 season, Ossie scored the league’s first basket, which placed him permanently in the annals of NBA history. On behalf of the entire NBA family, our condolences go out to Ossie’s family.”

The NBA added some historical perspective on Twitter, too, about the man simply known as Ossie.
