World Peace Will Help Knicks’ D

a

HANG TIME NEW JERSEY – It feels like Metta World Peace, a Queens native, was just meant to play for the New York Knicks. He’ll do just that after agreeing to a two-year deal with New York, on Monday, a move first reported by Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski. World Peace’s arena football career will apparently have to wait.

MWP and J.R. Smith in the same locker room has the potential for fireworks, but if he can keep his personality in check, the enigma formerly known as Ron Artest gives the Knicks something they need on the floor: a strong defender who can spell Carmelo Anthony and allow the league’s leading scorer to play minutes at power forward, where he’s most potent.

The defense is more important. The Knicks had the third best offense in the league last season, but only three teams — Philadelphia, New Orleans and Chicago — regressed more defensively. New York ranked 17th on that end of the floor after ranking fifth in the 2011-12 season. But the Knicks could now have a strong defensive unit with Pablo Prigioni, Iman Shumpert, World Peace, Anthony and Tyson Chandler on the floor.

Potential New York rotation
PG: Felton, ?
SG: Prigioni, Smith, Hardaway
SF: Shumpert, World Peace
PF: Anthony, Bargnani
C: Chandler, Stoudemire

If Anthony is now back to being more of a four than a three though, New York has two back-up bigs – Andrea Bargnani and Amar’e Stoudemire – who will make more than $32 million next season and really hurt the team defensively. If Mike Woodson dares to play the two together, his goatee will be gray by December.

New York also needs to find a third point guard to give Woodson the option of playing Prigioni at the two, a key to the team’s success at the end of last season. Furthermore, World Peace – whose effective field goal percentage (47.0 percent) and true shooting percentage (49.7 percent) over the last three seasons are both well below the league average – adds to the Knicks’ list of one-way players.

If they’re going to truly contend in the improved Eastern Conference next season, New York will need Chandler to play more like he did in ’11-12 than he did in ’12-13. He clearly regressed last season, failing to make the defensive impact that he made when he was voted Defensive Player of the Year.

There are still some questions to be answered, but New York is certainly a better defensive team now than they were 24 hours ago. And they’re certainly a lot more interesting.

Once again the Knicks waste their money on players that are not productive! They could have did without Prigioni and Felton as well in my opinion. I give them credit for managing to keep J.R. Smith, hopefully he step his game up by the start of next season otherwise they’re screwed. The 2 main players they really needed to keep they got rid of. I don’t know what they were thinking. Chris Copeland was a nice addition to the team. Excellent shooter for a big man and he’s consistant. He’s that “go to guy” besides Anthony who could put up some descent numbers. Kenyon Martin was good for his rebounding and shot blocking ability. They need his defensive presence since Stoudemire can’t stay healthy and his minutes have to be limited but, they”re paying him all this money. That’s crazy! How can anyone expect them to win if they always make the wrong moves.

  2. KMill says:

How funny!! The Knicks pick up this joker after he’s cast off from another team, and now they are somehow way better?! Sorry but “Metta World Peace” is NOT the answer to anybody’s needs.

  3. ROB PERRELLA says:

NOT A BAD MOVE FOR THE KNICKS.THE IRONY IS THAT MANY YEARS AGO THE KNICKS COULD HAD EITHER RON ARTEST(METTA WORLD PEACE),JAMES POSEY, OR ANDREI KIRILENKO……THEY DRAFTED SOME CENTER NAME FREDERIC WEIS.THE AMAZING ASPECT OF THIS BLUNDER IS THAT THE KNICKS FIRED DAVE CHECKETTS AND DID NOT REPLACE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!OF COURSE I WENT TO ST.JOHN’S SO I KNOW WHAT RON ARTEST(METTA WORLD PEACE) CAN DO.ONLY IF HE WAS 5 YEARS YOUNGER!!

  4. Jay says:

Okay, Knicks…….now it’s time time to bring over another Point Guard, (with some NBA pressure experience)…….Nate Robinson is still available and used to coming off the bench.

BTW……We can’t rely on Stoudemire, so the Knicks aren’t going to bring back K.Mart, Lamar Odom is still available.

  5. what the fluck? says:

how can an idiot like you even be allowed to write an artikle? prigioni at the 2? aiiight… go and lick lebrons private parts or something

  6. ac says:

Melo should not play the 4. I hate this “he creates mismatches” argument. He creates mismatches regardless of what position he plays because he’s the best pure offensive player in the game. Starting 5 should be

    1. Ray Felton
    2. Shump
    3. Melo
    4. Bargnani
    5. Chandler

    Bench 5
    1. Prigioni
    2. Hardaway Jr
    3. JR
    4. Metta
    5. Stat

I think these are the most sensible rotations to go with, but when you want to change things up a bit you can throw Prigioni and Felton together on the floor. I’m just concerned about Prigioni’s ability to defend shooting guards much taller than him. Same argument with Melo playing the four alongside Metta.

  7. Pilot mathius says:

I still don’t understand what kind of team Lakers gonna be next season,b’coz players are going out bt no player in.i mean output is greater than input

  8. J says:

he should make em better d wise

    their starting lineup should be

    PG felton
    SG shump
    SF melo
    PF stoudimire
    C chandler

they should have kept Kenyon martin in stead of signing metta world peace

  9. bbbb says:

    Knicks starters:
    Felton
    Shumpert
World Peace (or Stat, depends on what Melo plays)
Anthony (can play either SF or PF)
    Chandler
    Bench:
    Prigioni
    Smith
    Hardaway Jr
    Stoudemire
    Bargnani
Guard (sign another guard that can make an impact,eg Nate Robinson-type PG)
Forward (sign a Copeland-type forward that can shoot three’s and has size(about 6’8-6’9)
Forward (a young defensive-minded forward that can also play center)

*If nyk meets bkn in playoffs(maybe bracket 4-5 or 3-6), It’ll be Knicks in 6.

  10. Tom says:

At the price the Knicks paid…Metta is a steal.

  11. razvangry says:

    why not this lineup:

    PG: Felton, Prigioni
    SG: Smith, Hardaway
    SF: Shumpert, World Peace
    PF: Anthony, Bargnani
    C: Chandler, Stoudemire

  12. lajpogi says:

they can’t still keep up with tha heat

  13. Jack Smith says:

Melo is not a four stop it…
    Felton, Peace, Melo, Chandler, A.B
    Bench Amare, Shumpert, Hardaway Jr…

In Jan trade Felton, Chandler and JR for Rondo and Kelly O.

  14. Anonymous says:

Metta’s defense is not what it was back in 2004 when he won the DPOY award. Bad signing tbh

  15. McFlyHigh says:

NYK would be foolish to not have Metta in the starting lineup.
Felton, Shumpert, Metta, Melo, Chandler. Prigioni will make sure the bench mob stays in order.

  16. Kimmy says:

I think Spike Lee will be pleased…

  17. Max says:

LAkers needs Tyson chandler?derk nowitski, Austin rivers, release or trade scare, get Marc gasol!!’

  18. no…this would be New York’s potential line-up

    PG: Felton, Prigioni
    SG: Shumpert, Smith
    SF: Anthony, World Peace
    PF: Bargnani, Stoudemire
    C: Chandler, Bargnani

  19. Jason says:

Metta is a bad player anyways. No gain just another contract to take care of. Waste of money.

    • Jason says:

Knicks should have gone for another player. Not an old immature goon. Were screwed. Another bad move by the GM.

  20. theholyspectator says:

knicks will lose first or second round once again…melo will leave the knicks in 2014…they still just dont have enough pieces to contend..and in a conference where you got the bulls indiana, the revamped nets and the 3 time champs in miami heat, forget about it!

  21. Isom says:

RON gives us the best option we have to solidify this team on the defensive end.

  22. Big Al says:

Lakers have been character destroyers in the past few years. They completely shattered Lamar amidst the failed attempt on Chris Paul. Pau’s tenure continues to be in limbo as they can’t decide for so long whether to trade him or not. Now Metta has been surprisingly amnestied. Not only is the team becoming the new Clippers; they’re prematurely killing off careers of once explosive players, indeed catalysts to their previous success. They just don’t seem to care, but hopefully World Peace isn’t deterred by this. It may be glorious to spend a few more years of basketball where he grew up. Besides, the Knicks badly need boost on both ends having a roster of players old enough to be dads of draftees and a bunch of ineffective ones.

    • Bunbury says:

This is why gentleman a player should never take less money than his worth. I feel bad for MWP, the guy took way less money to sign with the Lakers in 2009. his role and numbers diminished playing along Kobe. now that he is worth less, the lakers dump him.

  23. Line - up says:

    Potential New York rotation
    PG: Felton, ?
    SG: Prigioni, Smith, Hardaway
    SF: Shumpert, World Peace
    PF: Anthony, Bargnani
    C: Chandler, Stoudemire

    ——————————————-

    why not try this instead?

    Potential New York rotation
    PG: Felton, Prigioni
    SG: Shumpert, Smith,
    SF: Shumpert, World Peace
    PF: Anthony, Stoudemire
    C: Chandler, Bargnani

Also I wouldn’t be surprised if Stoudemire is traded or if Nash is brought here to reunite

    • Desmodeus says:

I’d be very surprised if Stoudamire is traded. Not that New York wouldn’t want to but that any other team would take that contract. Way too much money for a player who’s a defensive liability and spends so much time injured.

    • Pops says:

I think your line up makes seance except I’d start mello at the 3 and have stoudemire start at the 4. Then when need be Woodson can go small with Anthony at PF. Mike Woodson will know better then us though.

    • Bunbury says:

What about K-Mart. man it would’ve been fun to see JR Smith, MWP, Kmart, Chandler, Stoudemire, and Melo on the same thing. and they had Sheed last year. it’s like building an atomic bomb that just needed a little of friction to blow.

  24. Ziden says:

Medal World Piece is knot good for the knicks…. i need him for da mavs, beecause he will be very good in the mavs

  25. smiley says:

I knew Ron Ron would play on the Knicks at some point! Gives them good options and a good defender with size at SG/SF. Glad he isn’t on the Nets at least!

  26. Kamote says:

I don’t really get how one player improves a team’s D. Sure you can have this player dedicate his minutes to be THE team’s defensive stopper, but still, defense is supposed to be the team’s thrust. Unless you get Melo, JR, Felton and the other guys to commit to defense, NY won’t be a defensive team. Sure, the stats would change because of MWP’s presence, as what Chandler did last year. But still, the NYK is not a defensive team.

It all boils into committing ALL your players to follow a defensive scheme. MJ’s Bulls was a considered defensive team (in fact considered on of the best all time), but only MJ, Pip and Rodman are good one-on-one defensive players. So does the 2004 Pistons (Big Ben, Tayshaun, Chauncey) and the 2008 Boston (KG, Perk, T. Allen… Rondo isn’t an elite defender yet). Even if NYK has hard-nose defenders in Chandler and MWP, unless the coach knows D and the other players commit to it, they won’t be a better defensive team.

    • Josh L says:

When you have a Jordan, Garnett, Bryant or Chandler screaming at you. You will play defense. The one player motivates the other players. NY is a balanced team. The Bulls are defensive team, can’t score. The Suns are an offensive team, can’t hold opponent’s PPG.

      • Kamote says:

and you think MWP can do that to Melo and JR?

      • MaraviLLa says:

BRYANT SCREAMING AT YOU TO PLAY DEFENSE????? THE SAME KOBE BRYANT FROM THE LA LAKERS???? ONE OF THE WORST- ONE DIMENSIONAL, AND DEFENSIVE PLAYER EVER, IS GONNA SCREAM AT YOU TO PLAY DEFENSE???? HAHAHAHAH
        DONT MAKE ME **** LAUGHT.

      • OK u make no sense u said that no one player can make team d better but named teams with only three then a team d of ron,Tyson, iman are great defenders

  27. Dan says:

Like the signing. For 1.6 million reportedly its a steal! Starting lineup should be felton, shump, metta, melo and chandler…Got both sides of the court covered.

  28. Garrett says:

Maybe so but the Nets got the Atlantic division on lockdown.

  29. Jon says:

Excuse me for not understanding the NBA trade agreement rules, but does this mean NYK is no longer able to re-sign Kenyon Martin or anybody else due to salary cap limits?
