Hang Time Podcast (Episode 125): Featuring Sam Amick Of USA Today Sports

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — If you read the tea leaves properly, the way most people did, Dwight Howard choosing the Houston Rockets wasn’t much of a surprise.

That doesn’t make it any easier for fans of the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors or Atlanta Hawks to get through the first 48 of the free-agent signing period. Not when they all dreamed about Howard picking them.

But as Sam Amick of USA Today Sports (the man who broke the Howard story last Friday night) explains on Episode 125 of the Hang Time Podcast, it was Houston all the way for Howard … no waffle!

The impact of his choice on the rest of those teams and other free agents was swift, save for Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul, who had already made his mind up by the time Howard selected the Rockets. Once Howard’s business was done, though, it set off a weekend of activity that saw almost all of the big names agree to deals before the sun went down Sunday night.

Join us as we dissect those moves, the fearlessness of Celtics boss Danny Ainge, the pickle that Mavs owner Mark Cuban is in with Dirk Nowitzki after two straight summers of missed free-agent opportunities, celebrate Independence Day in the Bahamas, chart our winners and losers, debate the best (and worst) moves of the summer and plenty more on Episode 125 of the Hang Time Podcast: Featuring Sam Amick of USA Today Sports

Miclo is correct. Houston is still a large market. i don’t know if it is 4th largest, but I do know it is considered a huge American market, especially regionally.

Dwight, in my opinion, is not an DOMINANT center offensively. There are certain other centers in the league that would give him fits, especially in a 7 game series. I was glad that Chicago was not in the running in any way for Dwight either time. Asik, is on par defensively with D12, with D12 having a better offensive game.

I doubt this is a contending team this year, especially with Lin being the starting point guard. He’s a backup PG on alot of teams and nothing more.

yall must have forgotten about our chinese fans and plus houston is the 4th largest city in america yall are so ignorant

  3. Ben One says:

Seriously, I respect Rick Fox but the show is better without him. I listen to every show… and feel that Rick kind of holds the show hostage with his Lakers talk on toooo many shows.
Lang and Sekou hold it down more than handily.

LA SAY – GOOD RIDDANCE TO DWIGHT COWARD!!!!!

  5. coach151 says:

I think you read it all… LA IS never going to miss Dwight… He did’t give LA anything to remember, he played when he should have rested, he wined and cried behind everybody’s back, he didn’t hustle down court and blamed everone else for the defensive laspes… This guy is a major Bone Head! Would you want a Daddy that can’t count to 30Mil??? As a ex-ball player (football – baseball & basketball) I know that I never worried who was my coach, I left it up to my coach to worry about ME! I made myself essential to the team by being the best all all times, if I could not give 100%, I sat out… Dwight like to lay blame away from himself instead of meeting it head on, (which whould be the sign of a real leader) he tends to be too emotional, too reserved, too afraid that he’s not going to be liked… In essence, Dwight Howard is not what you can call a Leading Man… He’s better off as a role player, becasue he dosen’t demand respect… That you can tell by his playful attitude, although you are who you are, he is still repersenting several different entities at one time with his team-mates, the Ball Club itself, and his family… Sooner or later the man will have to step and be accountable for his actions….

i think housten wind up being a better version of orlando but i cant say i see howard winning a title its possible but im not so sure also i dont see irving leaving clevland and dirk has already said he was coming back to dallas for less money paul george might be the prize of that free agent period if lebron stays in miami carmelo doesnt do anything but score he does atleast hit big shots lakers need to sign hi and let kobe walk john wall might leave but who knows im pretty sure he will be a restricted free agent right

  7. Ice Cube says:

y’all heard me! google, youtube whatever you like you know what I said. Dwight got no response cus he’s scure!

  8. Jafar says:

As a long long time Lakers fan. I am happy he left. He is not the type of player that you can build your team around him. He wants to be the big man but does not want the responsibility for it. He does not and will not understand when you reach the top everyone wants to bring you down and you have to mean enough to fight the. For us, this year is a wash and hope with most of the load emptied by next summer we can find a few super stars to get back to the top. As far as Dwight goes, he is a Rocket now and I could care less about him. However, I do not believe the current Rocket can win anything big even the Western Conference. They are still 3 Super Stars away from wining big. To carry a team to the promised land you need back bone and Rockets still does not have that kind of player.

  9. Justified Joe says:

so in the end dwight left ORLANDO, which was HIS team, which made continuous second round+ appearances, nba finals as well….where he CONTROLLED everything and everyone….and would have probably very easily attracted cp3 before he went to the clips, where he is in the eastern conference where the playoffs are achievable with a .500 record, where he had more power then the coaches (SVG firing)….so he can try to CONTROL the lakers apparently…and didn’t like the fact he has to wait for kobe to retire ( even tho it is kobes team)…and then when he realized that they didn’t click right away…leaves immediately for houston to steal hardens spotlight and take omer asks position (who btw is an amazing centre) and have possibly ruined all chemistry and will severely cut down hardens points (who knows maybe harden is like jeremy lin one year big man, next year flop)….and he’s in the toughest conference…all for WHAT? so he can CONTROL ANOTHER TEAM? like couldn’t he have brought mega stars to orlando and been the “magic legacy”? or stick with the lakers as all the contracts are expiring next year except nash, which means him kobe and one more all star can merge? (possibly bosh, melo, kevin love) plus he would take the reigns in 2-3 years in the biggest franchise in NBA…NO instead he chose a team he has to be patient and for what? to lose his respect not from 1, not 2 teams, but from all the NBA who now thinks he is incapable of handling the “pressure”….i applaud CP3 for choosing a team and sticking to it…watch this season houstons chemistry won’t be as good, they won’t make the playoffs, and dwight will then request a trade like the baby he is…and if they do they will get crushed… dwight…you will NEVER win a title, nor have respect, and will always be known to me as an NBA SLUT.

p.s ITS STILL HARDENS TEAM, NOT YOURS
    #houstondoesntneeddwight…

  10. Chris says:

dwight has a better shot at an NBA title with harden, parsons and mchale, than with achilles kobe, nash 40 and no D Dantoni.

  11. We are still kicking on a dead horse here. Deal between D12 & Houston has been done and in 6 to 8 months we have a clear view about what the playoff chances are of the Rockets (and Nets).

If we are talking so much about the D12 free agency this year, what is going to happen after next season? Have you seen the list?

    Kyrie Irving
    LeBron James
    Chris bosh
    Melo
    Tony Parker
    John Wall
    Paul George
    Dirk Nowitzki

I guess that guys like Mark Cuban & Danny Ainge are aiming for the next episode. Can’t wait to see what is going to happen. The Celtics trade with the Nets was a shocker but the real shocker in the NBA might come next year!

  12. James says:

Lebron and Dwight did similar things, they both went for a chance to win the title. but Lebron’s has better result because he did it differently. Lebron went to a bigger market, to join TWO megastars. He gets business endorsements and help from his teammates. Dwight wen to a smaller market, with one star (mega star?? i don’t know. Harden was about to be a mega star but now that Dwight is there demanding all the attention, he wnt be anymore and we wont see it), what business will Dwight get??…remain to be seen…Long run future?? not very good. Short term goal? Not as good as Lebron. So will he beat Lebron? depends on Dwade next season…

  13. James says:

Why is there still a debate??? We all know Dwight choosing Houston bc he’s all about win now, short term benefit for his life, his career. Any time you leave a big market for a smaller market, we all know it doesn’t end up with a better result..in a long run. You lose so much potential businesses, connections,, etc. Dwight gotta win more than 5 rings for ppl to remember him, but even so, after his basketball days are over, he would be just like Olajawon, Mchale, etc. He won’t be like Kobe, Lebron, MJ who has the ability to connect with other businesses..

    • SUper Girl says:

GOING AGAINST TEAMS LIKE SPURS, GRIZZLIES,GOLDEN STATE & OKC, GOOD LUCK THEY WILL NOT MAKE IT TO THE CONFERENCE FINALS!!! 2ND ROUND ON PLAYOFFS THEN LOOSE AND WHAT WILL DWIGHT SAY? I DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH TALENTS AROUND ME. IS PARSON A SUPERSTAR? IS HARDEN A SUPERSTAR AND IS THEIR COACH A PROVEN ONE TO HAVE WON A TITLE? THEY ALWAYS GO BACK ON HIS PLAYING DAYS THAT WAS IN THE PAST AS A CELTIC!! AND THAT WAS WHAT THEY WERE TRYING TO SELL HIM. i AM GLAD DWIGHT IS OUT FROM LA AND HAVE FUN IN SMALL TOWN HOUSTON!!! WHAT SHOWS ARE THERE IN HOUSTON i HEARD NOT ALL GAMES ARE SHOWN IN THEIR CABLE NETWORKS THERE…. HAHAHAHA!!!
