Dunleavy, Bulls Agree On Two-Year Deal

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – While the rest of the basketball world waits for its next Dwight Howard update, the Chicago Bulls are busy handling their own business.

They secured a verbal commitment from veteran swingman Mike Dunleavy on a two-year, $6 million deal, according to ESPN.com’s Marc Stein:

Sources told ESPN.com that Dunleavy quickly narrowed his long list of suitors to five teams Monday and chose to take the Bulls’ two-year offer worth $6 million.

The deal can’t be signed until after July 10, when the league’s annual moratorium on signings and trades is lifted, but teams and players are allowed to enter into verbal agreements during the freeze.

Sources said Dunleavy also gave strong consideration to the Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves after spending the past two seasons in Milwaukee.

Dunleavy gives the Bulls one of the coveted floor stretchers on the free-agent market and helps shore up a bench rotation that will look much different from the crew that finished the season with many of its members in the starting lineup for a team that was ravaged by injuries all season.

While it’s not the sort of championship move that cranks up the fan base, Dunleavy serves a very specific need for Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau. He needs a shooter with Dunleavy’s size to be ready when Derrick Rose returns after missing the entire 2012-13 season recovering from anterior cruciate ligament surgery.

why not get rid of kirk? the guy will never stay healthy for a whole season next year, bulls should really try to find a solution to sign nate robinson, he is a guy who stays healthy, scores and gives a good effort every night. he and rose would be a good combo.

we want nate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! N trade deng

  3. Jt says:

Could have saved that money and spent it on Nate Robinson. I really would like him to stay, though I know he will get more money elsewhere.

  4. Luis says:

Why get Dunleavy and Mohammed, Nazr? when you have Kenyon Martin, Lamar Odom, J.R Smith, Paul Millsap, Andre Iguodala and Little Nate. These player can help D-Rose next season, please get some helph for Rose as soon as possible. Why not get Dwight Howard?

I agree, in fact, since we are talking about impossible signings, why don’t the bulls get 1996 Michael Jordan and !994 Pippen back to he roster, might as well as Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Larry Bird… Add Magic and put Rose on the bench.

  5. Flog Gnaw says:

There’s that range we need. Hopefully he can stay healthy. Rose, Butler, Deng, Boozer, Noah & Kirk, hopefully Belinelli? Dunleavy, Gibson & a reliable backup for Noah so he’s not dying playoff time.

  6. Jimmy Buckets says:

We want NATE! We want NATE!

Good pick up, he was a top five in the draft and the kind of player who demands tic based off his performance. When he’s rolling it’s hard not to play him. Look for a few starts along Rose, I wouldn’t be surprised. If I’m not sure, didn’t he play with Boozer at Duke. Deng is also Blue Devil, so good fit for Dunleavy. Gotta keep Bellineli or Nate though somehow, try selling the aspect of winning. Motto the Heat’s roster, players who can start or get paid more on other teams but choose to win. Can’t wait, The Blackhawks are poppin- Leggo Bulls!!!

Let’s face it the Bulls are fishing for something that not there. Yes he has the IQ, Yes he can Shoot when left open for Three second! Yes he does have the height! But we need player with skills and” Heart” not Hopefuls. And finally, a Vet guard that are young guards can learn from and look up to in times of NEED!

FYI sir the bulls are on the luxury tax and if you also know that they rarely spend so much on players. What they can do is to find players who can at least produce and also cheaper. If the bulls are not worried about the tax would you think that their best line up would be broken up last 1998? they could have won 2 or 3 titles more if the bulls are willing to spend so much. Anyways i like this move since the team needs outside shooters since their 3pt% went down last year and since derrick is coming back he needs some space to work around and these shooters will at least give him that advantage.

  9. Andylx says:

Great pick up, he is a great back up to Deng and willing to take the 6th man role. Butler can now focus on being a great shooting guard.

  10. Luis says:

Dunleavy will not help he team, Rose needs Howard and Nate Robinson…

  11. nognog says:

nice move by the bulls… they need a big guy that can shoot out side.. d rose is going back this season.. imagine when rose drives to the basket he attracts 3 opponents,, that opens up the three pointers,,,

  12. allen carl says:

very cheap for mike..it must be around 9million

  13. Jumppong says:

that is the sign the bulls will lose Marco.. Marco can penetrate to the rim compare to Dunleavy. gudluck

  14. EC says:

Good move – good shooter, produces low number of TOs, he´s not DPOY but a better defender as many may think, high bball IQ…. missed 100 games in his last 3 seasons with IND but “only” 7/82 last season… as he is not planned for the starting 5 I guess the risk is OK…

    nice! lets go bulls.!

  16. J says:

good bench player should average at least 3.5 a game in a bunch of mins

  17. Marcus says:

I follow the Bucks closely and Dunleavy was injured very few times and only for short stints if he was during his two years with the Bucks. Not sure where you’re getting injury prone from?

  18. amitpal says:

Good pick up but it seems like they wasted majority of there mid level on a shooter whos injury proned, and not exactly a great defender.

  19. SoFlaFan says:

Basketball is in his blood, I knew his Father growing up in Brooklyn, he never went anywhere without a basketball. Glad he had choices, but the Bulls???

    Best of luck Mike!!!

    • sleeplessbull says:

  20. Travis Best says:

If you know NBA-this is gold! —–Mike Dunleavy on a two-year, $6 million deal

    • EMCEE says:

Agreed! With deals like Hanborough’s $4.3M year floating around…this is a steal!!!

  21. George Wilson says:

Why couldn’t he just say ACL?

  22. sleeplessbull says:

hmm.. yeah.. could be a good signing… i would prefer JJ but Mike is cheaper and can get the job done.. not that quick as Kurver but ok!! just hope we can retain Marco!! but maybe we cant thats why we signed Mike!

  23. Demetrious says:

    Good pick up
