No Surprise, Paul Sticking With Clippers

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — In what has to be the one and only lock of the NBA’s crazy season (also known as free agency), Chris Paul is reportedly forgoing the formal recruiting process and sticking with the Los Angeles Clippers.

This is a move, first reported ESPN’s Chris Brousssard, that was all but cemented the moment the Clippers hired Doc Rivers away from the Boston Celtics and moved him into position as their head coach and senior vice president of basketball operations earlier this week.

One of the top two players on the free agent market this summer, along with Dwight Howard of the Los Angeles Lakers, Paul won’t bother flirting with the other teams that planned to pursue him and will instead end the process before it gets started.

Kudos to Paul for handling his business in this manner. He could have turned his decision-making process into a complete circus and made the rounds, just because he could. But why go through all of that when you know exactly what you want to do? Rivers and Paul together gives the Clippers an ideal nucleus for whatever championship ambitions they have for the foreseeable future.

And his quick commitment this summer sends a message to whoever else the Clippers pursue now and in the future, that Paul is a firm believer in the plan and serious about winning at the highest level with the organization.

What the Clippers do with Pau’s backup, however, remains to be seen. With the Toronto Raptors and others reportedly in hot pursuit of Eric Bledsoe, Rivers and the rest of the Clippers’ brain trust will have to decide if moving him now in a package that allows them to strengthen the roster with perhaps an experienced shooting guard is more beneficial than Bledsoe spending another year backing Paul up before he becomes the object of free agent affection in the summer of 2014.

The most important business, though, appears to be complete with Paul’s camp letting it be known that he intends to stick with the Clippers long-term.

In honor of the draft, take a look at the 1999 NBA Draft here!!

  2. mr. javi says:

CP3 could of gone to the Atlanta Hawks and if he did Howard probably would of followed him to Atlanta.

  3. #marco,yolo,polo,swag,yolo,lolo,lol says:

If yall like basketball read dis.

Marco Yolo is a game we created where you play marco polo but instead with yolo. Example, somone says Marco, you say yolo and do somthing crazy like jump off a hill and break your legs.

  4. gw chaff says:

i like the clips as is. the big improvement is they now have a real coach. that in itself makes the clips much better. yes they need a better center and better free throw shooting. only paul & crawford can be counted on, the chemestry seems to be there so give doc a chance

  5. lol like you’re gonna win in the “Lob City” lol…you can’t even get past a grizzlies team that had all of their most valuable pieces taken away from them lol

  6. BBall says:

Trade the Ronny Turiaf for Ginobili. Ginobili can help Clippers top in the West

    • someone says:

You seriously think that the Spurs would trade Manu? Don’t really know much about San Antonio, huh

  7. J says:

    i’m not surprised
clippers need a better back up for cp3 and more depth say a PG like nate rob or norris cole to back chris paul up

    AND TRADE DEANDRE JORDAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. asknba says:

Rodman said it best, this new nba is to sensitive, an to soft, with all these rule changes. Sources in Los Angeles say he blamed Coach Hollins, the best fit for an under achieving team, for his first round loss, an went all commando on Donald Sterling. Knowing all the while, if he left, Cliff would be a dream deferred.

  9. Tucker says:

Haha the Clippers probably won’t win a championship with this team. It doesn’t look like Griffin is gonna get much better. His rebounding has taken a serious dive, hr has limited post moves and although his shot is improving it is still too poor to take seriously. If the Clippers want to win a championship they’re gonna need a lot more out of Blake. CP3 needs to have a player as good as him helping him out and Blake hasn’t been that guy.

    • Joshua Greenfarb says:

That’s why this could be rumors. Apparently, Paul’s “reps” have stated he will re-sign with Clippers. What the heck does that mean? I’m not convinced until we see what Paul actually does. And maybe what Chris Paul actually says himself.

  10. LegalShots says:

Clippers should get Millsap for Billups, and also get Ginobili for Turiaf, that would definitely help the Clippers

  11. vincent says:

    *Paul’s backup

    • Joshua Greenfarb says:

Bledsoe will take over and start at PG for the Clippers. He will develop extra well under Doc Rivers. Chris Paul knows it’s time to leave and play in OKC again.

  12. jonny says:

Did you see that Lebron? Dwicht? Now this is the way an adult handles free agency, No being narcissist or atention needy.

  13. B Radd says:

With Lionel Hollins out and Doc Rivers in, I have a strong feeling the Grizzlies won’t be the Grizzlies that owned the Clippers during the 2013 playoffs. Doc might not be able to transform Blake’s game, a versatile Small Forward should pick up the scoring slack. Andre Iguodala can be that guy

  14. Gillsy says:

Theycould get Josh Smith and play him at the three, but how ill that help their maturity. They will not get Howard

  15. CHINA MAN says:

    Naw hes leaving

    • Joshua Greenfarb says:

If Paul is SMART, he will test the FA market. He might re-sign, anyway. However, I would not be surprised if he leaves LA, either for more money OR for NBA Championships with the Thunder.

Signing Doc Rivers might not have been a very good move. The Clippers may be paying Rivers too much. Good luck re-signing Paul now.

  16. Brandon says:

I hope Doc can help develop both Griffin’s and Jordan’s game a bit better
I dont believe they needed more shooting, I believe that the big men had to be dominant to get past the Grizzlies.

    • Hahaha says:

Lol Kevin Love to Miami after Wade and Bosh’s pay cuts? What are you talking about they are all already taking pay cuts and still cant afford to keep what they have now @_@.

  17. JerrellJohnson says:

Chris Paul is not going to win a championship

    • Joshua Greenfarb says:

He has to join the OKC Thunder, if he wants NBA Championships. That’s right. Championships. PLURAL.

  18. stirthepotgetsomecash says:

still cant beat memphis, zbo will own griffin again

  19. trueHEATfan says:

If true congradulations on making the 2014 finals CP3. I thought the team was good enough last year to make huge noise in playoffs. I see tbe talent is definately there it was the coaching. Keep Deandre he is still young pek lle forget most NBA bigs tend to take up to seven years to fully develop.

See what you can get for Bledsoe and maybe Tough Juice and possibly tn row Matt Barnes in there. Those three in some type of package deal can yield a very good return.

    • trueHEATfan says:

Even though personally I think Tough Juice is way too under utilized on Clips. Caron has mad game can easily give you 15-18 everynight.

  20. Martin says:

I love the way paul already made his decision before free agency even kicks of on july 1, very mature move by CP3

  21. hopeman1 says:

deandre jordan is short, griffin too, these guys together are very spectacular sometimes but also a catastrophic offensive duo

  22. Lakers4life says:

Nah,they need someone that can actually shoot aside from CP3 and Billups, athleticsm isn’t everything. They’ll problably get beat by Memphis again,oh well.

  23. sliver says:

the deal with garnett and pierce are over those 2 are goint to nets

  24. shawn says:

Clippers have a all star team Pg-Paul Sg-Billups Sf-Pierce PF-Griffin C-Garnett and have an awesome bench they are now Championship contenders

    • Phatz05 says:

Lol, PP and Garnett goes to Brooklyn, what are u talking about, L.A Clippers are overrated last season, they are 2-0 lead with the Memphis but at the end they choke, lol

    • boss says:

r u serious @shawn pierce and garnett are already traded to brooklyn

    • Akuhano says:

Have you been under a rock? Garnett and Pierce are with the Nets.

    • Martin says:

Are you kidding, get your news straight , pierce and KG are in brooklyn now with jason terry

  25. phillip says:

Brynum is going to walk str8 out of Philliy to the Miami Heat lol

    • trueHEATfan says:

As honorary of Heat kepp that overgrown baby. We got enough. Heat don’t need to get better yet, the rest of the league is stilk trying to catch up.

Plus, Bynum will be looking for a big payday somewhere he can sit on bench all year and complain about how much his knees hurt. I say once doctoer clears a player it is that players obligation to step up and provide something for there team. Especially the once with the lavish salaries.

Side note heat will manage to keep big three together after next season and be able to sign most likely Kevin Love after Wade and Bosh take their paycut. I’m from mia and we here plenty of behind the scenes talk the rest of the world are not privy to.

  26. Uncle Drew says:

These youngstas don’t know what they be saying, We need to get some expeirenced young bloods to dallas for dallas to be what they used to in 06! remember those old days like it was yesterday. Dirk aint in his prime no more so why dont we surround some young talent around a key playa

  27. OctoPPus says:

Clippers need more back-up … not enough for a Champ-demanding team

    Doc – v good move!

  28. lool says:

all z-bo has to do is destroy blake again and they’ll lose in the first round again

  29. Daniel says:

Obviously chris paul staying with the clippers is huge, but they really need to make improvements. I don’t understand why they are so keen on keeping denadre jordan. They someone in the playoffs that can step up, play smart, and actually be able to score without chris paul beating three defendors….I can see deandre jordan being a perfect player to come off the bench for the clippers, but i don’t see any reason to keep him. They need a big man who can shoot like Al Jefferson. Really hope the clippers get a better center or ship deandre out!

  30. Unkle Daddy says:

Unless Griffin some how transforms his game, and they make a huge splash in the free agent market besides (Paul) this is not a bright move on his part. In the playoffs Griffin has showed he has no real game against real bigmen when they go to work.

    • JAMES says:

@UNKLE DADDY, this is true of griffin, but with a coach of doc caliper and the aquistion of a big man or the maturation of jordan i still like are chances. Even chris paul has flaws, especially at the end of games when he trys to do too much and looses the ball. that happened way to many times last year.

      • Phatz05 says:

They have the opportunity last season but they let them go, we will what will doc rivers can do on the clippers team

    • Game Time says:

He avg 19pts, 6 rebs, 2 ast and 1stl vs Memphis the year before. Let’s not act like he wasn’t injured this past playoff series. Blake Griffin is only in his 4th year and people act like his career is over.

  31. Bruno says:

If this is confirmed, congratulations to Chris Paul for handling this free agent business in a smart and adult manner. Not something you see very often in the NBA today.

Now if they could just trade DeAndre Jordan for a center that can make free throws and score on anything other than dunks (Al Jefferson? Pekovic? Bynum?), maybe they can actually become contenders in the West.

    • Dias says:

Bynum? People ARE crazy! Jordan can get better in ofense, and RIvers will make him smarter in defense.

    • Eve Bathowsai says:

You wouldn’t want Bynum with all his knee injuries but Al Jefferson would be idea and possibly do up some sort of deal for your power forward (Blake something). If the clippers are to make it past the 2nd round then they need someone who can shoot mid range jumpers at power forward and not just smash and grabs.

    • lol says:

nah Al hes probably going to the celtics

    • mee(a)t says:

you never know…maybe he’s gonna be working on that all summer

      • JAMES says:

blake is not going anywhere. he sells tickets and has improved his perimeter game. He can only get bettter. He was the first one to practice and the last one to leave last year working on that very thing. with doc rivers there he will only improve. I AM VERY EXCITED ABOUT THIS TEAM.

Click on that link. Hopefully, my comments/posts got past moderation on that website. Because some of my comments are being erased at this website.

If Sekou is the moderator, he’s an LA fan and is scared that Chris Paul is going to test the FA market this summer. Why do you think CP3 hasn’t re-signed yet?

If Chris Paul wants to be the absolute best he can be and wants to be on the absolute best NBA team, he must join/play in OKC again. Thus, he can pair up with Russell Westbrook, forming the greatest starting backcourt in NBA history.

    • IM back bro says:

such good news for the clippers. He’s easily the most beloved character in los angeles and CHirs paul in his 7yrs in the league has done ALOT more than No-magic johnson. In fact…statistically…CHris paul is the best PG in Los Angeles history. And Ear vin johson doesnt count cause he was a center. GGreat news. Give him as much money as he wants clippers!!!!!
