Report: Clippers Targeting Pacers’ Shaw

MIAMI – The Los Angeles Clippers might have solution to whatever problems have been created with prized point guard Chris Paul recently.

Former Lakers and current Indiana Pacers’ assistant Brian Shaw is at the top of the Los Angeles Clippers’ wish list, according to Ramona Shelburne of ESPNLosAngeles.com, along with Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins. One of these guys could help give the Clippers some much-needed stability in their coaching situation with free agency less than a month away:

Shaw is considered the team’s top choice at this point, multiple sources said. His youth, championship experience with the Los Angeles Lakers and player development skills, which have been showcased by his work with Indiana’s Paul George and Lance Stephenson, have intrigued the Clippers management and players. He also received strong reviews from Clippers forward Lamar Odom, who played under Shaw with the Lakers.

But since no candidate has formally interviewed for the position, or met with Clippers owner Donald Sterling, the situation remains fluid. The Clippers front office has done extensive background work on a handful of candidates: Shaw, Hollins, former Cleveland coach Byron Scott, former Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry, ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy and Denver head coach George Karl.

Van Gundy was previously near the top of the Clippers search, but talks with him have cooled recently, sources said. Karl is also still under consideration, but the Clippers have yet to formally ask permission from Denver to speak with him. Karl, the NBA’s Coach of the Year after leading the starless Nuggets to a franchise-record 57 wins, will enter the final year of his contract with a new general manager at the helm, following Masai Ujiri‘s departure to Toronto. A source said Saturday that his situation in Denver remains “unsettled.”

Convincing Shaw to leave the Pacers for the Clippers would be a coup for the franchise that has bungled the process since coach Vinny Del Negro was let go. But they have to move quickly where Shaw is concerned since he’s at the top of Brooklyn’s search list as well. Both jobs offer some interesting specifics for a first-time coach.

The respective owners, the Clippers’ Donald Sterling and the Nets’ Mikhail Prokhorov, have very different styles. And you better believe that will be a factor in Shaw’s decision-making process, depending on how quickly things process on both fronts.

this might be irrelevant, but you should get your articles translated into other languages to reach more people

  2. purpleman says:

Signiing Shaw would be a good move.. The Lakers should have grabbed him last year!

  3. toygun says:

Hire Karl,, his a better fit for the Clippers style of play

  4. bunbury says:

This is why coaches need to be patient to get the right job. sometimes they are so desperate for a job that they take anything. getting a coaching job for the bobcats is not the same as the clippers at this point. Shaw wanted the job in Orlando; he won by losing the battle to jack Vaughn.

IM SO MAD THAT MY WIZARDS (Homer….dnt judge me) neva pursued who better to help shape and mold a young PG like John Wall, then a great mind with championship pedigree like a Brian Shaw.

On a side not how Brian Shaw and Nate McMillian are not NBA HEAD COACHES to me is kind of a joke but at the end of the day it’s a business.

Whoeva gets Brian Shaw got a sure thing and he will succeed wherever he goes. If he goes to Clipper I think which ever big man is the most coach able will gain the most out of it.

  6. pelican for life says:

Every one knows that Paul is not going back to the Clippers and that David West is a free agent. The pelicans are going to get both of them back and return to playoff contention. The line up would be Paul, West, Davis, Gorden,(Vasquez,Burke, Rivers) and Aminu, with Anderson, coming off the bench.

  7. Lakers Fan says:

As a Lakers fan I’d like him to replace D’Antoni, butI don’t see it happening. He can go to the Clippers (with the core intact) and show Kupchak and the Buss’ how wrong they are, hard headed management.

  8. J says:

somebody make him a head coach!

  9. MELROM says:

WHOAH IMAGINE WHAT CAN SHAW DO WITH BLAKE AND ANDRE IN TERMS OF PLAYER DEVELOPMENT HE WILL PROBABLY MAKES BLAKE MORE LIKE KARL MALONE AND ANDRE MORE LIKE SHAQ OR TD CLIPS SHOULD MAKE A MOVE NOW SO THEY CAN BRING HIM AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE IN THE TRAINING CAMP FORGET CP3 AND KEEP BLEDSOE SAME TALENT (GIVEN MORE EXPERIENCE TO ERIC) LESS EGO

    • 007 says:

Couldn’t agree more. I never understood why Blake never reached out to Karl Malone he shoots coming down just like him and pick roll is huge role in him scoring. His free throw shooting is horrendous n Karl Malone could probably teach him take his GOOD OLE SWEET TIME at the line before shooting.

  10. Why says:

Lionel should stay with Memphis because he’s a really good coach it’s the player who don’t listen lol (Jerryd Bayless)
George Karl will stay with the Nuggets, he got the coach’s award with them and they would’ve gone farther if it wasn’t due to the loss of Gallinari
Clippers need a defensive coach they’re only good at showing flashy offense, but no defense

  11. critics says:

clippers is the best LOSER TEAM!

  12. KOBE_BRY@Manila says:

When LA let go of Shaw and went on to get another coach, I said that they have let go of someone that would bring LA to the finals.. Then, they replaced the coach once again.. Now.. Others are appreciating the works of BShaw because they know that BShaw would help them a lot.. LA!!! Go and get back BShaw… Pleaseeee…

  13. Leclematus says:

JERRY SLOAN people, JERRY SLOAN !!! Remember Stockton – Malone ?!? Paul – Griffin ?!? Anybody ???

  14. Shawn Kemp No. 1 says:

Have they talked to CP3 about this? He has to give them his blessing first!

  15. d. boss says:

Brian Shaw go to the lakers…he can coach better and can integrate a great system for the big guys and small guys to fire D’Antoni…replace him with shaw…then we can see the lakers back in the final

  16. Uhr---Pacers Bad Boy from Turkey says:

I would like to see him with Pistons cuz they can be next Pacers they have good pieces at Monroe and Drummond they get a lottery pick but not quick contenders likes of clips and nets yet it is Shaw who decides keep goin’ coach I want to see where even gentry hmm uhmms get coaching chances =]

  17. Pouchon5 says:

Come apply the triangle offense with the nets Shaw. They have an excellent groups. All they need is a legitimate three point shooter and a someone to teach them how to man up. That is your best option Shaw. Billy King and Pokhorov will let you coach. Come to Brooklyn and next year we’ll be playing in the middle of June. Hope you understand my point.

  18. FK CLIPS says:

Clips trying to rebuild past laker team. Failures ..

  19. Whacker says:

No !! Go to Knicks Shaw!!

  20. Stu-Brew says:

No Shaw! Go to the Lakers, they need you since you know the triangle offense.

  21. Jarro21 says:

Brooklyn has leadership issues with their PG. I wouldn’t go there, and their PG is not accountable. Wouldn’t take that as a first time head coach. Clippers ownership doesn’t seem to be great to work with. Stay in Indiana, get a shooter and another true PG and win a championship. Wait for a job with great owners who will allow you to put your footprint on the team and have some leeway to do so.

  22. He has it.... says:

Shaw should go to the Nets to be honest… They have some good pieces plus, the owner has money to spend as he has said before. Shaw has been around long enough as a player and coach, why not give him a shot?? They gave Skiles, L.Hunter, Ty Corbin, and many others a shot… He was one that got to play for and coach with Phil. He need not reward himself with a championship in Indy, because IT WON’T HAPPEN…. Let’s see what he can do. Van Gundy is a bust he’s had several chances.. We’ve seen how far Karl can take a team.. (LOVED THOSE SONICS!) I’d like to see what Shaw brings..

  23. Naaah Brian Shaw is a risk, I would go with Jeff Van Gundy or George Karl if Lionel Hollins decides to stay in Memphis.

  24. Berdugo says:

No. Shaw must reward himself with a championship in Indiana, at least, for the short-term.
Brooklyn and LAClips need a lot of work and development. Although they have the pieces capable of a contender to the Finals, that ain’t enough.

    • Stop The Hatin says:

Pacers aren’t enough, as we have seen. With the right coach, both the Clips and the Pacers can win it all, but obviously Frank Vogel isn’t going anywhere. His best bet would be the Clips.

  25. k;j says:

NO! GO to the LAKERS SHAW.

    • Sixers Fan says:

NO! GO to the SIXERS SHAW!

      • it is just fitting that Brian Shaw go to the lakers…he can coach better and can integrate a great system for the players…PLUS…he actually played with Kobe before…fire D’Antoni…replace him with shaw…then we can see the lakers back in the finals

      • Stop The Hatin says:

Or go to the Clippers, which would be a knockout blow for the Lakers regardless of who they get in Free Agency.

    • KOBE'S_A_BALLHOGGER says:

CLIPPERS HAVE THE BEST CHANCE OUT OF ALL THE TEAMS TO MAKE IT TO THE FINALS IS CHRIS PAUL STAYS BUT YALL KNOW CHRIS PAUL IS GOING TO NEW YORK TO PLAY WITH MELO. SO SHAW IS GOING TO THE NETS.

      • E-SY says:

Many weird connections in your comment… don’t know what to think of it…

      • Jack says:

So in translation: “The clippers have the best chance of all teams to make it to the finals as long as Chris Paul stays. However, you all know that Chris Paul is going to New York to play with Carmelo Anthony. As a result, Shaw is going to the Nets.”

    • JOSE says:

The lakers had that chance to have shaw, and they when for D’antoni if shaw has any pride he would not go back to the lakers
