Blogtable: Can Lakers Contend in ’13-’14?

Each week, we’ll ask our stable of scribes to weigh in on the three most important NBA topics of the day — and then give you a chance to step on the scale, too, in the comments below.

Week 27: Thunder’s chances | Will Lakers contend next season? | Boston relevancy

Can the Lakers be real, legitimate contenders for a title next season?

Steve Aschburner: Can’t see the Lakers retooling that quickly, and that’s what I think it will take for them to rise again. I’ve said before that Dwight Howard, for his own good, ought to sign elsewhere — Atlanta or Houston make more sense, in my view, because the expectations and scrutiny in L.A. are too intense for him. But where would that leave the Lakers? They have to build around someone and Howard is their greatest NBA asset (assuming he signs). Kobe Bryant might miss a good chunk of the season, Steve Nash and everyone else will be a year older and Pau Gasol, if traded, might not bring back what some Lakers fans think. They’ll be fine in time because of the legacy and the market appeal. Just not 12 months from now.

Fran Blinebury: Yes. While pondering his navel and what to do with the latest, greatest decision of his career, Dwight Howard could be walking along the beach at Playa del Rey in front of Phil Jackson‘s house and come across a gold lamp lying in the sand. He rubs it and a genie appears to grant him three wishes: 1) A new Achilles tendon for Kobe; 2) A backbone and sense of responsibility for himself; 3) About five more wishes, because that’s what it’s going to take. So … no. The Lakers are old, broken down and worn out and without a healthy Kobe, Howard can’t carry the load.

Jeff CaplanNo. I think the Lakers will be an improved team (really, how can they not?), led by a Dwight Howard that is healthy and committed, no longer buckling under the pressure of an uncertain future. He’ll be in L.A and he’ll be focused to play at his best. I expect big things from Dwight next season. Having said that, with Kobe coming off the Achilles injury and Steve Nash turning 40, I just don’t see how they hang with the younger and more athletic teams in the West. The Lakers’ payroll situation has GM Mitch Kupchak fairly handcuffed to do much in terms of bringing in players that can make a difference — at least for one more summer. They desperately need shooters and wing players that can get up and down the floor.

Scott Howard-CooperYes, but a series of uncertainties all have to break right. Does Dwight Howard re-sign? And if he does, how will he change? How will Kobe Bryant be after his injury? What dependable players, if any, will come for a small contract to provide depth? If everything works out, the Lakers are hardly at the front of the pack. But they are in the pack.

John Schuhmann: No. I’ll believe that both Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant will be healthy next season when I see it. Given the Lakers’ cap situation, it’s doubtful they can add a real impact player. And given Mike D’Antoni’s history, it’s doubtful that they’ll get it together defensively.  It’s funny that Bryant said Tuesday that they figured how to play together at the end of the season, because they still ranked 18th in defensive efficiency over the last 15 games. A healthier (and re-signed) Dwight Howard will help on that end, but that’s not close to championship-caliber defense. Oh, and if Howard decides to leave (something that’s entirely possible), they’re up a certain creek without a paddle.

Sekou Smith: Championship contenders next season like they were this season? That’s laughable. The Lakers have to hope they can come back next season with a core group capable of helping them stay in the playoff conversation. Dwight Howard has a decision to make on his future. If he decides to go elsewhere in free agency, while Kobe Bryant is recovering from Achilles surgery, Steve Nash is recovering from the beating Father Time put on him and Pau Gasol is recovering from the emotional beating he’s taken over the past three seasons, the Lakers’ playoff hopes fade significantly. These Lakers, as good as they looked on paper last summer, never lived up to their own hype. They won’t begin next season on anyone’s short list of potential champions unless they do some serious offseason work to retool this roster.

Lang WhitakerYes. the Lakers can be contenders next season, if everything works out perfectly. Assuming they re-sign Dwight and get his health back to where he was a few years ago, and they get Steve Nash healthy, and they keep Pau Gasol, and they figure out a way to sign a few guys who can knock down threes and defend, and they somehow get Kobe back at 100 percent (even in his 18th season) in time for the postseason, and they find a way for all the guys to grasp Mike D’Antoni’s offense, they’ll be right there at the top of the contenders list.

  1. Bmamba says:

The trade of Pau Gasol to the Atlanta Hawks for Josh Smith and Kyle Korver or Lou Williams ( Korver being the likelier one that the Hawks would be willing to give up) sounds brilliant. J Smoove is a player in his prime stuck in a team taking him and his talents no where. he would bring so much needed defense and another added bonus of offense in the paint rather than Howard being the only option there defensively and offensively. Also bringing Smith might convince Howard to resign with the Lakers.

  2. Unkle Daddy says:

I can’t wait to see everything Whitaker said needed to come true for the Lakers to be back, not happen. Dwight come home to Atlanta. Howard, Horford and Smith, now that’s a big Three.

  3. Chea Pae Xiong says:

Just keep the same team with Kobe, Howard, Gasol, Nash and just remove MWP. Just let them get to know each other more and get more healthy.

  4. Mike says:

    Trade howerd

  5. One of the king's subject says:

Why do laker fans think just because someone is a free agent means 1) they’re not going to resign or 2) going to the lakers without question. They’re not getting cp3 not jarret jack Jennings Marc Gasol Iggy or curry the best the lakers can get is maybe turiaf and maybe Calderon

  6. Ronald says:

Resign Howard..don’t have heart yhe way he play as a lakers…

  9. Tuf-DANA says:

Problem #1) A Soft Coach on court/in locker

    Problem #3) A Soft foward
Problem #4) A Soft bench no 6 man factor
Throw in age on key players, injury rehab, maxed out player $$$Dollars KOBE retiering after he gets beat up again tring to carry the team his final season. Try 3 more yrs. At least!

  10. gechz22 says:

Lakers need to trade howard to minny for kevin love and ricky rubio. try to get ariza back for mwp and duhon and the lakers will be a contender again.

  11. SRB says:

Keep Howard, Jamison and Paul Gasol, get a defensive center(like Touriaf), trade MWP and get the PF like Smith, trade Steve Nash for younger playmaker, ande get a SF who can shoot free’s.. And get rid of D’Antoni..

  13. Matt says:

I get a laugh daily from these comments.

It boils down to two things:

    1. Sack D’Antoni; OR

    2. Rebuild the roster

It doesn’t take a genius to see D’Antoni is a bad fit for this current bunch of players. They were only successful after All-Star because they ignored everything he said. In Game 1 we all got to see Kobe’s twitter thoughts and how he would have told Pau to get on the block, It’s fair to say they were all listening to Kobe at the end of the season instead of the coach. Dropping D’Antoni isn’t the fix the fans want, these Lakers will not win anything again as currently built. But they will play better with a different coach and a style better suited.

As regards a rebuild. That’ll take a while, Highly unlikely they get some of the young talent in the league like some of the deluded fans claim they can. If they followed what some people say on these type of forums they would end up with a shocking team that would be far worse than they are now

  14. aj says:

If Kobe was playing they couldve had a chance this playoffs. People saying the lakers are a joke are just hating. They were doing better than most teams in the league. The eastern conference teams are the real joke. Like they shouldnt even broadcast those games its just sad.

Lakers should et rid of MWP, Coach D, Duhon, and just rebuild. As a laker fan IDC if howard stays or not, I would rather have the ability to sign a legit guard because the NBA right now is guard dominated. Howard doesn’t really have offensive moves in the post. I would rather see the Lakers rebuild starting with a bench.

  15. 360fadeawaydunk says:

let go of howard. use the money to get chris paul & deandre jordan.

get rid of d’antoni & metta.

if u cant get phil jackson, jerry sloan or larry brown or byron scott

get calderon, jarett jack, tony allen & kyle korver.

keep pau gasol. he’s rare (he can do everything underneath the basket. (just need to improve some muscles)

  16. ronnie says:

Bring back PJ and do the same thing again like TRIANGLE Offense its more effective game in a decade.

  17. LALKB24 says:

    1. Replace Antoni
    2. Sign Dwight
    3. Sign Nick Young/Chris Coppeland

Now we are contending for Championship.

  18. ImJusSayin says:

So a bunch of injuries and a mismatched coach (To say the least) take this from a top contender to NO?
If they can keep the roster together and stay healthy (Need new coach for that) they are definitely a contender.
I can’t expect anything though seeing as the young Buss has destroyed any team he’s touched.

  19. Buddy Lee says:

haha spurs season isnt even over and laker clowns are talking about stealing their players….hilarious

  20. and1probask says:

LAKERS NEED TO START MACKING BETTER DECISIONS FOR 2013 – 2014 IF WE WANNA TURN IN TO CONTENDERS
THAT MEAINS GETHING A GOOD COACH LIKE PHILL JACKSON BETTER PLAYERS LIKE KOBE AND DWIGHT GET RID OF SOME OLD SCHOOL THAT WE DONT NEED AND RECRUIT SOME GOOD PLAYERS WISH THERES IS GONNA BE A LOT FREE AGENTS WHIT GOOD SHUTHING PORCENTAJE THAT ARE NOT ASKING FOR TO MUCH THAT WE CAN KEP AS BEACH PLUS WE ALSO GOT PLAYERS THAT DID PLAY GOOD LIKE JAMISON AND BLAKE THAT WE SHUT KEEP EVEN BETTER THAN MWP AND NASH THAT FOR MY OPINION SHUT GO NOW WE IT COMES TO THAT BEACH THEY SHUT MAKE A CLEAN UP WHIT MR CLEAN LOLWHIT ALL THAT SPENDING THAT LAKERS ARE DOIN IN THA BEANCH FOR NOTHING WHY NOT SPEND IT IN PLAYERS THAT WE CAN USE

  21. Steve says:

For all of those people out there that think/are hopefull the Lakers have a chance next year and use the word “if”, let me share this old saying with you “if your aunt had nuts she’d be your uncle” – it’s not going to happen – period!

  22. Shal says:

How is it an awful season if you get to the playoffs? The Lake show can’t always be ON. No Kobe=No playoff victories.

  23. Lakers Gone Fishing!!!! says:

LOL!!!! lakers what? Karma is a b!+Ch crowning lakers before the start of the season…. You deserve that losers!!!!

  24. sanjay says:

    no! period!

  25. Blaque says:

I’d like to see John Wall as their starting PG and Steve Nash/Blake off the bench.

  26. willbrad23 says:

Lakers need a strong relatively youthful bench to relieve the pressure off the older players. The 3 straight times they made the finals they had one of the best benches in the league.

  27. andres feret says:

    - Get rid of the coach, bring back Phil
    – Stop thinking in D12
    – Get rid of MWP, Meeks, Morris, Duhon, Jamison and Blake. Keep Nash (BIQ and experience, like Kidd on the Knicks)
    – Get one of the best free agents: Calderon, Jennings
    – Get Wall from Wizards (i think Kobe moves to SF when he comes back)
    – maybe it’s a dream but i would love to see Gasol’s brothers playing for LA…

  28. Big Al says:

Ebanks, Blake and Duhon/Morris need to go. Re-sign Dwight, trade for Pau if they want, then take in Iverson and bench Nash. Plus find a proper SF to back up MWP.

  29. John says:

Fire them all, burn the building down, maybe try to act like they never existed, slap Jack Nicholson for being a baby, etc. These are a few things I think the Lakers could do to better themselves and their image.

  30. ctc says:

How do I see Lakers for next year:
    – Resign Howard for 20 mil
    – Sign Iguadala for 16 mil
    – Sign Chris Paul for 19 mil
    – Sign J.R. Smith for 4 mil
    – Sign Barnes for 1 mil
    – Sign Brandon Jennings for 5 mil
All of them ar free agents

    – Reduce Kobe salary to 20 mil
    – keep from the banch Earl Clark, Jodie Meeks, Antawn Jamison, Devin Ebanks
    – trade Artest for picks
    – trade Nash for picks
    – trade Blake and other unuseful players from banch

BRING A GOOD COACH HIRE ME AS MANAGER :)))) LOL

  31. Skolimowski says:

Dwight Howard is pathetic. So athletic and gifted physically, yet so spoiled and weak mentally. It’s hard to be a champion when you depend on someone like this.

  32. deJavu says:

    laker mgnt let’s do this:
dumbtoni= garbage can ( get shaw or sloan )
    jim buss= phil jackson
    gasol= kevin love
    nash= iverson
    jamison n,j.meeks=kyle korver
remove duhon, morris,mwp../ remain: j.hill ,clark blake
kobe still plays .. and dont know if d12 is enough to rehire( salary cap)
    d12= iggydola^^ ( since we have kevin love n jhill,clark for d12 position)

kupchak do this..and thank me later.. go lakers 2013-14 season champs !!!

  33. Leo says:

Trade kobe, nash, howard, gasol for lebron james Lol

  34. John says:

The Lakers are a bunch of one-time very good players who are past their prime (Ron Artest, Antawn Jamison, Steve Nash, Steve Blake, Kobe Bryant, Chris Duhon) and can only be expected to slip further downhill next season, not get younger and healthier. Even Gasol has just had his worst season in a while. I can’t understand how Dwight could possibly look at LA as a good team to sign with this Summer if he wants to chase a championship; and if they lose him, they are really, really in shambles.

The only logic I can come-up with to explain why Dwight would resign is that maybe this failed LA experiment has taught him that chasing the biggest city with the biggest stars isn’t a formula for a guaranteed championship like he thought. So maybe instead of leaving LA for the next LA substitute, perhaps he’ll stick with his current team just to show loyalty and thus salvage some of his reputation.

  35. YES BUT ONLY.... says:

    1. If D12 signs with them
    2. If they replace D’Antoni with Sloan, Shaw or Collins
    3. If they get younger, healthier back court (Sessions and/or Shannon Brown for example)
    4. If they trade MWP, Gasol
    5. If they demote Nash to a bench player
    6. If they get 1 or 2 more shooters

  36. LA Lakers Dream Team…

Phil Jackson to manage or coach Kobe and the rest of the Lakers team again…at least they’ll respect him than all the other coaches…

    Trade (or do not re-sign Dwight “drama” Howard) (since it seems he really does NOT see himself as a Laker as shown in his performance without Kobe in the playoffs) with Blake Griffin;

    Trade Pau Gasol with his younger brother Marc Gasol;

Try to acquire Stephen Curry; and

Try to train-improve Jamison, Clark and Meeks.

    So Team A (Starting/Main) are Kobe, Stephen Curry, Blake Griffin, Marc Gasol and Steve Blake;

Team B/Alternate: Nash, MWP, Jamison, Meeks, Clark.

Let go the others who CANNOT really play (benchwarmers) and even “accidental” players. Lakers NEEDS “consistency” players.

“Re-train” Lakers to really play like a “TEAM”-Together Each Achieve More! Look at Miami Heat as a “benchmark”. Why can they build up their Team like that. Does it mean that they are more richer??? Their Team also already play in the optimum chemistry and harmony even in their “building up” year/s…

    • Also, BTW, how did the LA Clippers build their Team like that, they’re like a lot of highly cap???, “salaried” players like the Miami Heat…

  37. M1978 says:

There are too many ifs in that article. Just like this season, it is the same. If all stay healthy and do their jobs at a fine level they could have serious chances. But be honest: how good are the chances that a 40 year old Nash, a 35 year old Gasol, Artest and a 36 year old Kobe all stay healthy? Quite around 0.
And the other factors are contributing as well: D’Antoni is not a coach who produces champions. Howard has no rythm, had no rythm in this season. All he has left is to do some good looking dunks. No real shots or made free throws. Shaq once played quite the same with a big difference though: he scored 30+ points per game and was extremely dominant.
So my advice to the Lakers:
    1. Fire D’Antoni. Bring in Phil or someone capable.
    2. Fire Nash, let him retire, or get him at the bench. He could be one of the best substitutes but he isn’t able to perform at superstar level anymore.
    3. Let Howard go. At his state he is not worth the money. Get some cheap defensive players and 3 point shooters instead of him.

  38. lou74 says:

    Get Love to Lakers!

  39. Keep Kobe, Earl Clark and Goudelock.

  40. ben says:

    sack DAntoni

  41. Henry vanfort says:

the lakers need to get rid of Artest, steve blake and nash, meeks and howard
also D’antonini. Bring brook lopez or Love, greivis vasquez, araiza.

  42. Dirkleton says:

i think Iggy and paul george would be absolutely ideal for the lakers to strengthen up the perimeter defence and, offense.
but that will never happen, both are happy where they are. i do think a completely healthy laker roster is a good team but nash is old and kobe will likely miss half the season. i think rebuild for 2014-15 cause they will be figting for the 8-7th seed this year

  43. Idiots !!!! says:

when will you Lakers fans get of the ‘We want Phil’ bs?!?!?!?! he’s not coming back…. get a better point guard and start from there…. Blake is aweful, nash is old he needs to be backup…. you guys dont have any good picks coming up, so you need to blow the salary cap, get some cheap young players and go from there…. you only have Kobe for a couple more years. D12 isnt anywhere as good as he used to be, and wont unless he gets some hardcore offseason training…. phil wont help you, kobe cant do it all…..

  44. jonski22 says:

actually, this season the Lakers did not met it’s full potential…changing of the coach, drama everywhere, and of course being HEALTHY…anyway, i want to see them back again next season, with all of them healthy..all of them getting along together….my only problem is the coach..he is stubborn and arrogant…he doesn’t command respect…but i really like to see DH12, Pau, Metta, Kobe, Nash, with Blake, Meeks, Jamison, Clark and Hill…that looks a good team to me..with nice rotation…not so young and athletic..but good…athleticism are for regular games..see how games slow down on playoffs, look at Nuggets and Warriors, and Clippers….or maybe it’s just me that want to see that “oldies”…

  45. LAKER BOY says:

Dwight needs to stay with the Lakers. If he moves to a new team, It will give Shaq more reasons to hate on Dwight. And if Dwight wants to show he can lead the Lakers the way Shaq did he’s gotta stop complaining and take everything like a man

  46. jj says:

lakers can’t win a championship..kobe can’t return nxt season and they are old..

  47. Mark Sparks says:

Why not bring Phil in Bobcats?

    • John says:

I can’t believe this many people care about the Lakers, and I say that knowing full and well how big Los Angeles is. It almost makes you throw up in your mouth a little bit, seeing this many people Fakers-Shop Talking. Pathetic and sickening. The Lakers are all a bunch of divas and hopefully they will get swept every year for a long time to come by teams like San Antonio or The Thunder.

  48. LAKERNERD says:

FIRE KUPCHACK replace with PHIL JACKSON… Mitch dont know how to run a team… Fire D’Antoni as well…

  49. JD Drew says:

Lakers need to get rid of Artest, AND coach D’Antoni. Make a mutually beneficial deal with Phil Jackson and rope in a top tier perimeter shooter. Also do a balancing act with the egos of KB and DH (if he signs).

  50. NBA FAN says:

THEY REALLY NEED TO THINK OF REBUILDING THE TEAM. A NEW COACH PERHAPS. THE COACH IS A ” 1 MAN TEAM ” LOVER. HE GAVE KOBE ALL THE PLAYS THUS OTHER PLAYERS ARE JUST NOT THAT MOTIVATED TO DO THEIR BEST COZ THEY ALL FOLLOW WHAT THE COACH SAID ” GIVE THE DARN BALL TO KOBE” …

KEEP ALL THE PLAYERS. LET THEIR 2012-2013 EXPERIENCE HAUNT THEM ON THEIR NEXT SEASON. THAT WILL FIRE THEM UP. KOBE WILL PROBABLY GONNA MISS SOME FEW GAMES IN EARLY 2013-2014 SEASON AND NASH WILL STILL BE IN THE BENCH.

RESIGN HOWARD, KEEP PAU AND MOTIVATE OTHER PLAYERS TO PLAY THEIR BEST.

  51. Heat Bandwagon says:

Trade Howard to Clipper land! He wants to have fun and dunk, P.S his still in Hollywood. Get CP3 who wants to win rings and not throw up lobs. can you imagine 4 really good players who has high basketball I.Q? deadly team!

Line up – CP3, Gouldelouke ( while kobe is injured ), Granger, Earl Clarke, GASOL,
bench – Steve blake/ steve NASH, Meeks/shannon brown, MWP , Jamison, Jordan Hill

  52. Kevin says:

just release Dwight Howard and then sign other bigman players like Cousins. He is young he can improve and become like Howard.

  53. KOBE most likely, will never play @ the same high level again — due to his injury.

The Lakers will need to make major moves to become contenders again.

    Now GO SPURS GO !!!

  54. LA MNL says:

I think it’s impossible for Phil to return, however, fire D’Antoni. He’s good but not for this team. For the roster, put Morris and Goudelock as starting backcourts for the Lakers and keep MWP and Nash off the bench. If possible, re-sign D12. Putting some more minutes for the young guns would definitely help. Nash shouldn’t be playing those huge minutes. And MWP. Guys like Clark and Hill must have quality minutes. Add some younger and athletic players and may God bless the Lakers. For the 17th banner, do what you do great!

  55. semikalosi says:

There are (in my opinion) two reasons why the Lakers won’t contend.

    Howard and D’Antoni.

Howard – Needs to grow up and take the game seriously for the Lakers to flourish with what he brings to the table. His immaturity shines on the court.

At this point, if I could, i’d trade Howard and Gasol for Noah, Boozer and (try and steal) Gibson.

At least Noah and Gibson understand their role and play to their strengths without trying to outshine everyone else. Boozer does what he can and probably plays at the same level as Gasol if not a bit better…

Heck, id add Nash in a bid for Hinrich and Robinson. Either way, (whether it happens or not) it’ll still play out the same.

I’m getting carried away but if Howard stays put, they could get a lot for him…

D’Antoni – Just can’t seem to get the team to gel. His system just doesn’t work with this group of guys, even when their all healthy. Maybe with the right trades, he could make it work.

  56. Kobe Bryant says:

    LOL

  57. christian g says:

i think they need to get rid of nash, gasol, meeks , jamison, morris, and ebanks. oh and sacre.

they cp3 and some good defenders and were fine.
    oh thats if d12 resigns

  58. Anmol says:

fire d’antoni bring back phil jackson!!!

  59. james mollo says:

YES IF THEY BRING BACK PHIL AND KOBE GETS BETTER THEN OFF COURSE

  60. Kobeblackhole says:

Just remove the ballhog kobe, retain everyone i am sure and guarantee that they will be better than this years lakers.

    • Sid says:

Like this year playoffs? Yeah maybe we could replace KB with KD from OKC – oh no since RW is out he became a ball hug as well – man 23 attempts on 11 made – what a ball hog.

  61. Pitiw guy says:

    1 word : PRINCETON

  62. frank says:

no changes in roster ,, they need to fire mike d antoni im sorry for that ,, I respect mike d antoni,,,,

but if mike d antoni will stay same thing will happen this coming season,,,

lakers need Phil jackson, or,jerry sloan,,,this summer for training camp and for the season

no changes will happen in roster,, because the roster is a championship caliber line up,,, no trade will happen.

    thats all.

  63. BioMan says:

    Trade Howard get Al Jefferson.
Trade Nash + MWP for Josh Smith(for SF position) / Paul Pierce or any SF(quality player) available.
Start S. Blake and get some guards on FA or Rookies.
Get rid of Mike D’Antoni and go back to Triangle.

    • BioMan says:

      Point Guards
      – Steve Blake
      – Jarret Jack
      – Derek Fisher
      Shooting Guards
      – Kobe
      – Ray Allen
      Small Forwards
      – Josh Smith / Paul Pierce
      – Andrei Kirilenko / Trevor Ariza
      Power Forwards
      – Pau Gasol
      – Earl Clark
      – Jermaine O’neal / Rasheed Wallace
      Centers
      – Al Jefferson
      – Jordan Hill
      – Chris Andersen

      Coach: Phil Jackson!!!!
      anyway, just a suggestion..

  64. Ryan James says:

Before the start of the season, one of the biggest acquisition of Lakers is Nash. A year before, Nash still contributes not just good but MVP numbers. Too bad his Suns did not make it in the playoffs, if they did, Nash is again a serious contender for MVP. Stats don’t lie. He got stats almost the same as his MVP years, it was just unnoticed because they barely make it to the playoffs and his team is not as exciting and explosive as when, Amare, Marion, Bell, Barbosa and Joe Johnson were still with the Suns.

Nash is a court general. You can’t have a good general when you have a lot of generals running a team especially if their objectives are not aligned.

Don’t blame each of the players. It’s not Kobe, Nash, Gasol, Howard and MWP. It’s the entire team including the coach and Lakers management.

Nash stats a season ago, is 53.2% FG, 39% 3FG, 10.7 ast, 0.6 stl, 3.69 TO. Try to research Nash’s stats a season ago if you have time and stop blaming him for Lakers slump this season.

  65. Craig says:

DH doesn’t have what it takes to lead a team.
Kobe, Nash, MWP and Pau are old.
Phil couldn’t win with team, no one could.
    Move on, rebuild.

  66. Paul says:

You know they dont need to rebuild their roster they just need Phil Jackson in L.A like Stephen A. Smith says because the problem is not in the roster its in Jim Buss and his ego and Mike D’ Antoni doesn’t have a good relationship with players he doesn’t know how to handle and have relationship with players and that what is also Phil have if Phil is the coach they utilize more the big men down low and Kobe would have not been injured because of that

  67. NBALogics says:

They need a new coach and they need too find out what Dwight Howard wants this week no stalling no games. If he decides he wants to be traded, trade him to Brooklyn for Brook Lopez and a couple 1st round picks if he doesn’t he needs to Bulk up more and study tapes of Shaq. As for Pau trade him to Minny for Kevin Love. They need to stop building around Kobe even Kobe knows it that’s why he was so hard on Dwight this Yr. cuz he thinks he’s the future of the franchise so they need another All Star Guard that can score like a Kyrie Irving or Steph Cury. As for SF’s they just need a defensive SF to lock down the Lebron’s, Melo’s and KD’s pretty much it.

  68. Parthiban says:

Better bring in the Zen Master. He’s the only person who can win titles here even with these old guys… Instead of wasting money on players invest in him…

  69. Chris Brown says:

laugh all you want, because if this same team is still kept, I won’t be surprised if they surprise everybody. Go Lakers! Dwight will come back I’m sure of it.

  70. Heisenberg says:

Everybody doesn’t like D’Antoni except for the lakers honchos. What can the fans do? Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Mitch Kupchak and the buss family hold the fate of the lakers. And this is going to be a long offseason negotiations for the lakers.

  71. ED says:

I THINK THE LAKERS SHOULD KEEP Dwight Howard, PAU AND NASH, BUT THEY NEED HIRE BEST SHOOTER GUARD.
KOBE IS A EXCELLENT PLAYER BUT HIS FUTURE IS UNCERTAIN (PHYSICALLY), SO MEANWHILE MUST HAVE “A” PLAN .

  72. rocks says:

am i the only person that thinks andrew goudlock would come in and do a good job for a full season again?

  73. Erik Jones says:

It can go two ways with Howard if he leave we can trade him with better players there are a lot of free agents players Chris Paul one of them but if Howard stay he has a lot work to do simple as that man he need to get on the ball in training camp Be a beast next we need P Jackson FIRE D’antoni not right for the Lakers program Trade I like Peace trade him Duhon Blake Gasol like I said before if Howard leaves trade him if he stay get to work Howard ASAP

  74. and1probask says:

TRADE GASOL? SING PAUL? ARMANDO U MEAN PIERCE

  75. Rey says:

Get rid of the coach that’s what they need

  76. and1probask says:

LAKERS NEED TO FIRST GET RID OF D’ANTONI SECOND IF WE GONNA HAVE A BENCH THAT THE GONNA SPEND A LOT OF MONEY AND NOT USED THEM FOR NOTHING WHY NOT HAVE A BENCH THAT WE CAN USED THEN THIRD GET RID OF ALL DOES OLD GUYS THAT SHUT BE RESIVING SOCIAL SECURITY NO DESRISPECT THEY WAS GOOD ONE TIME BUT COMEON IS OVER LETS BE REAL THIS IS THE NBA

  77. Kobe4Life says:

Pick Up Kyle Korver For Cheap. Keep Pau Let Go Of MWP And Pick Up Calderon And Keep Gasol Howard Nash And Kobe. And We Will Be Good

  78. NBAfan says:

D’Antoni is not a good fit. Gasol and Dwight need to learn how to play together while Kobe is out. Kobe needs to come back as close to when he left as much as possible.

They don’t need anymore superstars. They need 3 hungry and athletic mid-level players who are willing to do the dirty work and make the most of every wide open shot they get from Kobe, Dwight, and Gasol.

They need guys like Jarrett Jack. Guys who will just step up and help you win no matter what. Hard-nosed competitors who just wants to win.

Nash and MWP need to come off the bench or they need to go.

  79. jack says:

Do a complete overhaul. Kobe is too expensive for an injured 35 year old. Achiles sequels are not easy to handle for a player with age and miles like Kobe. If LA would have a chance there is only one player who should stay Dwight. Re-build around him. Kobe would never allow him to take his team over. We saw the circus he made as he was threatened. Possible candidates young talented players Oklahoma Style. Term at least 2 years to have a chance.

  80. drewpot says:

just get a deeper bench players

  81. armando says:

resign dwight howard, clark, and jamison, trade gasol and sign paul, fire d’antoni..

  82. d12&cp3 says:

    Amnesty kobe
    Resign howard
Sign cp3 (isnt he a fa?)
    Trade gasol
    Dump meeks, peace, jamison, duhon
    KeEp dantoni

  83. Jlbrice says:

If they want another ring, they are going to have to get rid of Mike D’Antoni, MWP and most of the young guns. Kevin Love, as someone suggested would be great, but it seems that getting him would be very complicated. I agree with Calderon as a great value for money option for point guard.

  84. Jlbrice says:

I think that Mike D’Antoni should go, if not the situation will repeat itself. MWP and most of the young guns, too. Bringing Kevin Love would be a good coup, but I do not see a way they could pull that off. I do not see Howard moving to Minnesota or the Timberwolves or even them accepting a straight trade. With Gasol, you would need additional players to swap and the rest of the pieces would not do too much for the Timberwolves, they would want something substantial. I agree that Calderon would be a great value for money option for point guard.

  85. Chris says:

Keep the starters, but take Nash out of the starting lineup. I’d be more comfortable with a healthy Steve Blake at starting PG. Nash can still shoot, he can be an effective role player, but he is too old to be playing the minutes he does to be useful. Start Goudelock at SG until Kobe is at 100% (there’s a reason he is called mini-mamba) and don’t resign Duhon, trade Meeks, offer Metta a veteran’s minimum and a bench role. If he doesn’t like it, tough luck. I’d rather see the lakers go for AK-47 off the bench anyway. Maybe try to snag someone young at small forward like Gordon Hayward. In any case get decent young talent with the potential to be good if developed and actually put some time into said development instead of just focusing on stars and they’ll be fine.

  86. lakerfan says:

Sign Iverson and trade antawn and blake for iggy

  87. Cp says:

Enough with the Lakers already!!!! They lost. Get over it. There are a lot of worthy teams still in the playoffs that should get coverage. Heat, Spurs, Thunder, Clippers, Knicks.

  88. El Tigre says:

I am not a Lakers Fan, but they should get younger (and efficient) bench players like Nate Robinson, Kyle Korver, and let’s hope J-Hill plays good

  89. grgo says:

we have to get one thing straight. Signing nash was a bad idea. Whenever kobe is on the team you need to have a point guard who does not need the ball in his hands, hit the 3 pointer, and defend ( someone like derek fisher). If we are focusing on winning a championship, dwight howard should not be in the discussion. As long as kobe is there he is the main man, it is his show. However it all depends on how he is going too look after his injury. It is a very complex situation. There are so many aspects that need to be recognized and taken into consideration. Unfortunately it all remains a question. I think the organization should just wait it out and hope for the best. The core players are there, it is just certain pieces that need replacement.

  90. Fred says:

Howard its gone, forget it, Use that money to get Free Agents.
    Put Gasol at Center.
Give away Nash, its done, Use his money to get Calderon, Or Jarret Jack in FA.
    Fire D´Antoni, get Van Gandy.

    PG.
    Calderon/Jarret Jack(FA)
    Blake

    SG
    Kobe
    Jodie Meeks
    Raja Bell(FA)

    SF
    Kyle Korver(FA)
    Mike Dunleavy(FA)
    Jamison

    PF
    Josh Smith(FA)
    Clark

    CENTER
    Gasol
    Hill

    • One of the king's subjects says:

Man I don’t care if Dwight is ready to be on a bunch of kid shows, tell me where you can find a 6’11 player who has an amazing vert and is in his late 20s. Next why would Jack and smith leave when they are going to re-sign. Jack sees a promise in the future of GS, and Josh will go one more contract before he leaves ATL. The best player i believe the lakers could possibly get is Turiaf to back up Howard, and if they get rid of nash maybe Rodrigue Beaubois.

  91. Kim says:

but you cant blame kobe this year that we werent better this year, kobe had a phenomenal season.
all blames goes to rest of the team, kobe did what he could do, and he got the lakers to playoff but the lack of help then its not strange that he got injuried.. he had to play heavy minutes, we won 8 of 9 last games to make the playoff all because of kobe

  92. asdasd says:

Things to do for LA to win next year:
    1. Resign Dwight Howard
    2. Fire D’Antoni and sign an experimented coach like phil, jerry sloan or maybe JVG.
    3. Trade Pau only if LA will have the better part of the trade.
    4. Get rid of MWP, Meeks, Duhon, Jamison and sign young guards and forwards in the free agency.
    5. Hope for Kobe to get back in time.

    You welcome Mitch Kupchak

    • PG says:

The days of ‘Pau for Josh Smith’ are finished; he has next to no currency despite being a very competent player. Also he has suddenly become quite old.
Lakers decided to have a starting five that took up the vast majority of their payroll and fill out the bench with veterans who need ball in hand to be effective (looking at you Antawn Jamison). They need to target role players like Miami did; Battier, Birdman, Allen, Lewis, Miller etc all have specific skill sets that address a need.
Nash is not the point guard for the Lakers either. He requires possession to be effective (in Phoenix every possession started with him) and he will never get the volume required to do so with Kobe and Dwight on the team.
To blame D’Antoni is short-sighted; the Laker squad had no synergy and needs to address their weaknesses and target players to address them…and keep MWP from stating they will have the best record of all time prior to the season.

      • Sid says:

So Pau got old – like what? Like the two triple doubles – actually he was the only one stepped up! Ok Blake as well!

    • Roll says:

try doug collins. he got fired from sixers right? i know he can get the job done for LA with all these talents. Im no laker fan and i sort of hate kobe for his ego but i hate it more to see a good team like this go down.

  93. A.K says:

Let go of Dantoni first and formost it will make a clear cut decision for dwight to bounce back since he is all about D, amnesty mwp and trade nash meeks and clark for a good young pg, then pick up some shooters off the bench with what mwp contract had and they are set soon as kobe is back.

  94. G_LakeShow says:

Isn’t Brandon Jennings a free agent? get rid of MWP, Meeks, and Nash & get Jennings. Keep Blake, Gasol, re-sign Jamison and re-sign D12. your lineup will be: Kobe, Gasol, D12, Jennings, and Jamison, Bench: Blake, Hill, Duhon, Clark, & Morris (plus a few others who hardly play)

  95. KObeoverbron says:

The Lakers have a way to shock their fans; drama driven. Similar to what the JETS represent to the NFL. I still don’t know how they landed Howard without losing Gasol, in fact they got Meeks in the same trade. To top it off they pick D’Antony over Phil to coach them, my point is if the NFL is allowed to have Tibow it is normal for the NBA to have D’Antony. The Saga continues Part III.” Nash got promoted to Coach Nash and D’Antony to General Manager”.

  96. ctc says:

How do I see Lakers next year: Kobe reduce salary to 20 mil, resign Howard for 20 mil as well, trade pau for kevin love 16 mil, sign chris paul for 18 mil, and bring JR Smith for 3 mil or Andre Iguodala for 16 mil..release Artest and Nash, resign clarke, blake and jamison..other alternatives: for pg: bradon jennings or monta ellis, for sg: kevin martin for sf: ariza for C: bynum..bring a new coach (phill jackson don’t think he will come)

  97. W/E says:

No, they are done, actually they are done since their last championship in 2010, Nash GAsol Kobe, cant compete for a championship, D12 became a role player he got so awfull on offense due to his injury, i know Kobe averages 27 but it doesnt matter cause he cant make his team a winning contender, now with the injury he is done, gotta rebuild cause there are no other options, the west is too strong and its too late for the Lakers now, and they have to get rid of D’antoni cause the guy is for sure the worst coach in the NBA.

  98. Beavis says:

they need to blow it up… especially mike “no” d

  99. Kal says:

Nash is not as bad as people think…
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-h5k7m2SVQ (and that’s just part 1.)
…he is still Nash. he’s just a little older, so not as fast, so his numbers are down. (deferring to Kobe, Pau and Dwight may also have something to do with it.) and his inability to defend is not news. he’s not going to have as many injuries next year as he had this season. it was a freakishly bad year for his and Lakers player injuries. but he is old and will have some injuries. and, anyway, L.A. is stuck with him without engineering an unlikely trade.

so, Nash is maybe an issue but not the problem. Kobe (because of the injury and his huge chunk of the cap space) is an issue but not so much the problem.

the lack of supporting cast is and has been a problem, the one that Lakers management never addressed at the start of the year, whereas Pat Riley and company were busy adding Ray Allen and Chris Anderson to a team that had already won the title…. D’Antoni as coach (while not as bad as people make him out to be, still a good coach, just not the right one) is a problem and coaching was a problem all season… the budget is a problem that can’t be fixed without creating another problem — a lack of stars — and it explains the lack of supporting cast…

so, it’s going to take a a new coach and more bench help and a brilliant trade to balance the budgets without losing talent… and, so, Gasol and Howard and whether they come back… this too becomes THE problem. not the players so much. the situation…

it maybe also begs the question: do we believe in Jim Buss? how about Phil Jackson as GM and coach? ya gotta think Phil could find a way.

  100. TTKIN says:

If Dwight leaves the Lakers, after crying his way onto the team and out of Orlando, and then gets ejected in his last game as a Laker, he better get prepared to be called the most immature player in the history of the NBA.

  101. Arthur says:

For lakers team, need to rebuilding get a young point guards. Nash need to be traded and Don’t get Howard anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!

  102. Kamen Kamenov says:

@Steve Aschburner, I cannot your opinion seriously. If the scrutiny in LA is too much for Howard? Is it the same Howard I’m thinking about, namely one of the league’s biggest superstars with a perennial all-star game presence, and who thrives only when surrounded by constant media buzz? If he can’t handle LA, who on earth can?
I very much agree with the rest of what you said but think that, given that the Lakers keep their core, their ability to be serious contenders will depend on how the rest of the roster looks like. As much as I hate to agree with the guys from TNT OT, Metta World Peace, Antawn Jamison and the likes are going to have to go. Bring in fresh talent that can provide speed on fast breaks, and you got yourself one of the league’s elite teams once again!

  103. Joe from Illinois says:

The lakers need to resign Dwight and get rid of a bunch of players we need a young point guard I like Nash but the truth is he is old but still Vintage. We need better 3 point shooters. Someone like Step Curry. Kobe needs to be healthy and also Dwight and just need better role players and the team will be fine in the 2013-2014 season

  104. AZLAKER says:

BRING BACK PHIL JACKSON ….GET A YOUNG PG, AND ALSO AN ADDITIONAL SHOOTING SF , RESIGN DWIGHT AND LAKERLAND WILL BE FINE AGAIN !!!

  105. Edward says:

Bring Phil Jackson Back from ottawa Canada

  106. Bball88 says:

If I was the Lakers main office, my opnion would be this. I want Howard, buts lets release Kobe and make run at Jennings because his contract is up. That would free up some sallary to pick up some really awsome young bench players around the league and give them time to learn under some veteran players.

Yes, I am Kobe fan. But this has nothing to do with heart or survival — it’s “Physics”.

Magic retired at 37. Jordan 38. Larry Bird 35. And everything under the sun, tells you that it its time to upgrade/move on.

As for Kobe retireing that would be cool, but I don’t think he is ready to take back seat to anything. Maybe him and Peter Jackson can build a team together because his is the only one Kobe is willing to be coached by.

    • DukeBlueDevils says:

I guess he should be able to help Kobe get his 6th ring since Peter Jackson was the director of The Lord of the Rings.

    • know nothing says:

Magic actually retired at 31 and made a brief comeback at 36 playing in only 32 games.
Jordan retired 3 times, being the final one at age of 40.
      Bird retired at 36.

  107. johnny dawson says:

Why don’t the Lakers just merge with the Clippers and form a single team. They already share the same building, so why not share their players too? So long as everybody takes a pay cut…

    • Mytownla says:

LMAO!!! R u serious??? Do u honestly believe what you wrote could be a possibility??? if so, then you should stop speaking basketball, actually…. Just stop breathing period smh

  108. danny dento says:

The lakers need to hire shaq to show Howard how to post up on offence and not to get so many offensive fouls. I mean the team is great. Look at what they did at the end of the season. Finishing of 28-12 is good enough for laker fans. I think anyone who thinks kobe isnt gona be the same after this injury needs to go back to school becuase I have seen kobe play for ten years now and he is a beast. The lakers can win and they will win next year. As far as the coach, Dantoni is a great coach but not for this team. His offence is set up for a younger group who can run and shoot THREEs. You live by the THree and you die by three. They need a coach who can slow the game down like Phil Jackson. Kobe bryant is great when he has a dominent center to dish to when he drives it in. Dwight is that guy and the sooner he improves his post up game the sooner we can get some more rings. Lakers Next year. Put money on it because its gona happen. Go LAKers

  109. moshe wanna says:

i have to say a few words about the laker team for next year
first of all the lakers will make a big mistake sighning dwight howard again and here is the reason why you can take a donkey to the best hair stylist in the world you can never make him look like a horse
that is Dwight Howard he is not a smart basketball player and he is not a warrior
about Steve Nash ,he is done
meta world peace should be replaced and Blake too
    gasol should stay
    i hope Kobe returns healthy
he is a real samurai i am not worried about him
i would bring Nate Robinson to the Lakers and two more good and young players next to him
the lakers can bring three more very good players for Dwight Howard and build a good team

    • Gordon says:

Listen i can maybe mit agree with not signing DH, but getting rid of Steve Blake I don’t think so when he is healthy he can knock down three’s withthe best of them. Nash is done and so is MWP, bring in Lamar Odom, Derek Fisher, and NAte Robinson and some young players that can compliment the Vet’s and be role players that play defense. Someone like the Birdman.

  110. MUFCLAKERSFAN says:

The Lakers are always contenders. Dwight Howard will RE-SIGN. They need to change the SF and PF position to match up with the quick athletic teams. The bench must be retooled. They need to mix young athletic players with their veteran core groups. Playing Big minutes for Nash and Kobe can’t continue to happen. They dont give the young players like Clark, Hill, Goudelock and Morris minutes. Jamison and Duhon should not be resigned this season. MWP is past his PRIME.

  111. Patty says:

THE LAKERS NEED TO GET RID OF D’ANTONI RIGHT NOW. BRING PHIL JACKSON BACK IMMEDIATELY.

WHO CARES IF THE LAKERS SIGN OR NOT SIGN DIWIGHT HOWARD. I AM SICK OF DIWIGHT HOWARD AND HIS CRYING ALL OVER THE TELEVISION.

    BRING PHIL JACKSON BACK

    BRING DERRICK FISHER BACK

GET RID OF MOST OF THE PLAYERS ON THE LAKERS’ ROSTER.

    • Gordon says:

Yes i trully agree with every think you say.

    • DJ3 says:

YOU NEED TO SETTLE THE CAPS.

WHO CARES IF YOU WANT TO COMMENT I AM SICK OF YOUR CAPS.

      GET RID OF YOUR MOUSE.

      GET RID OF YOUR KEYBOARD.

      GET RID OF YOUR COMUPTER.

  112. simon says:

    of cause i love lakers

    • Gordon says:

I think the Lakers should bring back Phil Jackson as the GM and coach. Maybe get rid of Nash, get some Core players that will know there role, kep the current player except Meeks, MWP, get someone who can knock down 3’s and someone who plays defense. The Lakers clearly neeed a new coach. Bring back Lamar Odum, and Deker Fisher. Plyers who know how to win. As for Kobe he will be fine rehabbing he will be ready by late October or late November. I still think they can contend for a title. Now you try winniing with Brown as coach, and now he is gone, and the same thing will happen with the present coach if they get off to a bad start.

      • Nobody says:

Sure, find someone the team dumped and asked to be traded to come back, and ask a PG who’s old and nobody signs in the regular season to replace an older PG. That will give you championships.

  113. steppx says:

Am i the only one to notice just how old nash is now. I said it at the start of last season but i heard few if any sports writers say anything about it. HE IS SHOCKINGLY bad defensively now. I mean would you rather have a jeff teague or a tyshawn taylor or the burnt out husk of steve nash?

    • Patty says:

STEPPX, THE LAKERS NEED TO GET RID OF STEVE NASH. HE IS 39 YEARS OLD AND CANNOT PLAY LIKE HE USE TO.

  114. steppx says:

Am I the only one to notice steve nash is OLD….so old he shouldnt keep playing. I said this at the start of last year and i didnt hear a single journalist say a word. WHY?? Honestly, you think he isnt a liability at this point???????? I mean, its weird to me. Would you rather play with a jeff teague say, or someone of that level talent…or even less…a mo williams…..is that not better than what nash has left? His once bad defense is not shockingly bad. STUNNINGLY bad. So i dont know…kobe might or might NOT be back. All this mythologizing of kobe…..well, he’s human and he has had 17 years to screw up his legs. Nobody survives forever. And the biggest question is howard…well, and D Antoni., talk about two guys not made for each other. And DAntoni is just not a very good coach. I can see howard leaving just to play for a diffferent coach.

    • Bongo says:

Agreed, Steve Nash is old and cant do it anymore. He cant defend the quicker younger point gaurds, he cant penetrate, turning the ball over too many times for a point gaurd. He is a back up point gaurd at best like Andre Miller or something.

      • dan'o says:

I’d feel better about Nash if they had a young buck at the point who could grow under Nash’s tutelage… but since they don’t, you have a pretty strong point

  115. Yes, my team the Lakers can contend in 2013 -2014 NBA Season. If Dwight Howard will come back to play with us. If Kobe Bryant can come back from Achilles Injury in time for the season opening, If Pau Gasol will not be traded in the summer. If all the players will be back and stay healthy. If they have chemistry and defense. There are so many ifs for next season. If everything turns out to be okay, my team the Lakers will not only contend next season but we will win our 17th NBA Championship.

    • St. Lou says:

You forgot: IF Kevin Durant decides to leave the NBA to become a rodeo clown, IF Popavich starts popping pills, IF Blake Griffin and CP3 decide to leave the Clippers for the Globetrotters, IF the Grizzlies decide to form a blues band, IF the Nuggets decide to start JaVale McGee at PG…

Even in the hypothetical best case scenario for the Lakers there are still many teams better than them in the West, not to mention the Heat and Bulls (with DRose) in the East.

      • john smith says:

and if the Miami’s Big-3 decides to join Laker, and if DRose and Durant are willing to be bench in Lakers, or if all pros (except lakers) retire next year.

    • tyletaylor says:

lmao the lakers are the jokes of the league now

      • San says:

Being a Lakers fan, I am just thinking, with Mike D, Lakers seems to be Jokers. Either Coach has to change or the young-faster players has to be signed. Either way, with Mike D lakers can win champ?

    • RG says:

uhhhh…no. if they bring back the same team and as long as D’Antoni is still the coach, they will not be contending. they’re too slow and can’t play defense (as Schuhmann pointed out, they only ranked 18th in defensive efficiency in the last 15 games), and having an offensive-minded coach in D’Antoni doesn’t make it any better, whatsoever.

  116. MJfromOKC says:

They have to get rid of Nash and get a younger dude. They need to amnesty Kobe and resign him at a lower rate. They need to sign Dwight at less than max. They need to spend money on their bench, with all that extra cash they ought to have really good luck filling out the team.

    • tyletaylor says:

if they amnesty kobe they wont be able to resign him until his contract plays out. which means they cant resign him for less until the end of next season. but i agree with your other points.

    • tyletaylor says:

if they amnesty kobe then they wont be able to resign him until the end of next season.

    • dan'o says:

The organization will NEVER amnesty Kobe, PERIOD. They don’t do their stars that way- and attempting to resign D12 as the franchise face would be a tough sell in such a case

    • Ryan says:

they have a younger dude. Steve Blake proved he was solid and could play great. I did not see any problems with his play before he got hurt.

  117. Nick Jones says:

The Lakers need to replace Meeks and Metta with faster players who are better shooters who can defend. Not sure that calibre of player is out there available. Rumours of Kevin Love not being happy in Minny and the fact he went to UCLA sparked rumours a while back, he’d be ideal to replace Pau as he has more range to compliment Dwight better. Very doubtful, but it’s the Lakers and who knows what they do.

    • Pardeep Dhand says:

ur telling everyone that thy need to get a better shooter and someone faster than meeks for cheaper???? theres not many many players that are faster than him and to be both, thats just crazy, point is its impossible to replace meeks with what your looking for.
And if u want to trade MWP then whos gonna be our premium defender to guard lebron, kd ,wade etc.??? Get some Bsketball I.Q man

    • sid says:

I said it at the begining of the season and I am not gettin tired to tell it again:
Get rid of Mr. “I cannot coach defense” – still it wins Championships Miami not being Champions for their offence, they are beasts defending their ground.
Get Tom from Chicago – cause he is not gettin it done there!
Get Kevin Love – cause he is not really happy where he is now – where was that by the way?
Get John Wall – cause he is too good to die in Washington
Get rid of Dwight – let Play Pau Center he is better at that Position anyway and together with Kevin under the hoop LA will manage defend their inside.
Get rid of Steve Nash – with John Wall and Steve Blake and a backup PG LA will be just fine
Now Comes the tricky part: start replacing Kobe (on short only for begining of next season – but Long term that will Need to start now.

      • TT says:

Get Tom Thibodeau from Chicago Bulls? Do you really want to see Kobe tear his ACL again? Even Derrick Rose is afraid of playing for a coach who pushes him to his limit at the expense of his health. Remember last year’s playoff against Philly. Bulls fans will never forget WHAT YOU’VE DONE TOM THIBODEAU!! WE’LL NEVER FORGIVE YOU!!

      • Stephen says:

You think they’re gonna trade Wall just like that? Typical Laker fantard

      • Sid says:

Hah what’s the different now with Mike? Did same thing but without defense! ;-)
@Stephen – yo I did not say how they should do it – it’s management job, make deals incl. D12, Steve Nash, jorden Hill, MWP, …
Who cares just get LA Kevin Love and a decent young PG. if there are trade scenarios incl. Pau or Blake just freakin do it. Get LA back where it belongs – and that is at the top!

      • Sid says:

Would even make a trade for Kobe (even I would hate to see it) but you win the next two or three championships nobody blames You anymore for real – people start sayin it was time, his time was over, blah blah blah ….. Though real fans (like me) will not forget that easy

      • Sid says:

If someone like a second Eddie Jones around, that would do fine for new SG – let’s face it, Kobe will come back but he be different. And even he back to full powers which will decrease with every new season, earliest it will be season 2015/16 – to have a contending team you need to start now.
Besides it would be perfect time now to start over. New coach get a good chance with some new players (Kobe out will make it even easier). Mike is done in LA – hardly a playoff seat with a set of players he should have formed into a championship contender, a clean first round sweep, You need more? An entirely rubbish defense and that with two of the best defenders in the league (MWP and D12) and don’t come me with injuries or that these veterans would need time to find the self, I never saw Nash fumbling the ball that often during his entire career. The main job of the head coach is to form the team! Point! Did you see them play this season? Did anybody saw any real chemistry? Look during timeouts, look when they were in the huddle, when things went bad at times they fall entirly apart and just gave up. Where was that fighting spirit on every possession? Where was the joy when they won a game against a top contender? Put it the way you want – THIS WAS MIKE’S JOB and he failed BIG

I agree with you on MWP. We need to add Chris Coppeland who has proved that he can be a good player if given minutes in NY. he is young and good scorer. Also, Nick Young is another player lakers need to look for to upgrade SF position. We lack SF position. If everybosy gets healthy Lakers are a dangerous team. And, Mike D Antoni needs to go which won’t happen.

Just sign Calderon, Korver n another cheap sg, resign Howard n all is good. Oh n sack D’Antoni.

    • Lakers says:

the best u said is get rid of D-Antoni. Just keep Kobe, Gasol, Howard, and Blake, maybe MWP. Everyone else is prone to more injuries or lack of experience. So my answer to the headline of this article is NO, unless they change the roster.

    • Wurms says:

Tony Allen is a free agent, best perimeter defender in the game. Lakers need to grab him ASAP! He’s 31, so he will have no problem fitting in with L.A.s crew. He would be awesome coming off the bench. Lakers havent had a good perimeter defender since Ariza. OH HOW I MISS YOU, ARIZA!

Also, if Pau ($19.2M) is truly gone this summer, perhaps a sign and trade with Atlanta for Josh Smith ($13M) and either Devin Harris ($9M) or Kyle Korver ($5M).

Dejuan Blair is gonna be a steal this summer. Dude just needs a chance. He’s a beast on the boards. Pop doesnt use him much in the rotation. People say he is small for his position, but lots of team play small ball anyhow. Lakers need defense and heart, and Blair has both, which is why D’Antoni wont want want him.

Makes me sick Lakers are paying Duhon $4M next season!!! With only a year left on his contract, he is good trade bait. Maybe toss him into a trade this summer?
