Bobcats Fire Coach Dunlap

From NBA.com staff reports

Coach Mike Dunlap has been fired by the Bobcats after one season on the job, as first reported by Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer.

Dunlap, who led the Bobcats get to a 7-5 start before ending with a 21-61 record, had his share of flare-ups with veterans on the team (most notably Ben Gordon) during the season. The Bobcats have had just one winning season (2009-10) in their franchise history and have won 35 games or more only twice in their 10 years of existance.

Dunlap was the fifth coach in the Bobcats’ nine-year history. He came from the college ranks, where he had served as an assistant for St. John’s before taking the Charlotte gig.

The Bobcats released a statement upon Dunlap’s firing, with team president Rod Higgins saying the following:

Rich Cho and I conducted our season-ending review and met with Coach Dunlap to reflect on this season. As an organization, it was decided that we needed to make a change with the head coach position,” Higgins said. “We want to thank Mike for his contribution and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

  1. price you would expect. Some would say the designs are actually copies of higher end brands. But that is why Steve Madden is so sellable! Here鈥檚 another Steve Madden

  2. Amused says:

This pathetic team needs a middling coach that can help them reach “the next level”…which, for them, would be vying for ninth or tenth place in the East. In order to get to that level, they could hire any of the numerous semi-decent coaches who have come and gone, or come and gone several times, in recent years. Sam Mitchell would be an ideal choice. Maybe Flip Saunders, or Scott Skiles, or Nate McMillan. But forget about upper-echelon coaches like Phil Jackson or Stan Van Gundy. Why would a coach at that level even take a look at Charlotte? They wouldn’t.

  3. Big Al says:

Dunlap has done a great job to notch more than 20 wins despite a loser lineup, yet has become scapegoat and got unfairly fired. Not even Phil Jackson can get them over 30. I hope they don’t win any games next sesason. This team has no place in the NBA and the sooner it folds, the better.

Stan Van Gundy, Jeff Van Gundy, Scott Skiles, Sam Mitchell, Avery Johnson or Michael Jordan

I think there is a possibility for Coach Collins to handle a young team like Bobcats

  6. Big Al says:

The real problem with this pathetic team is its owner. Until someone has the balls to tell Michael Jordan that he’s wrong with many things about running a franchise, nothing will be able to save the ‘Cats. You can fire coach after coach, and there won’t be any changes.

i think MJ need to get rid of the GM as well………………..

  8. Robert says:

News Flash!!!…Phil Jackson was spotted having dinner in Charlotte with Michael Jordan & Kobe Bryant. Can the fans finally dream about winning.

  9. Ben says:

    MJ should fire himself.

  10. LALA says:

Man, MJ’s lucky Ted Stepien existed, otherwise he’d be the worst front office guy ever. Dunlap worked miracles with this roster. If your best player is Ramon Sessions and you’re not the worst team in the conference, your coach is a genius.

  11. LALA says:

Jordan heard Phil Jackson was in the hunt for a coaching gig, so he fired his Dunlap. Truth.

  12. coachvillecco says:

Coach Dunlap not only did a great job with this awful roster, but he should be up for Coach of the Year. To win 21 games with that roster is borderline miraculous. The Bobcats are extremely dysfunctional and it starts at the top. 5 coaches in 6 years is a joke. They can hire Phil Jackson, Red Auerbach, John Wooden or Coach K and they will still stink until they are committed to getting better players. Their incompetent front office will be in this same position a year from now. They did Coach Dunlap a favor by dismissing him today.

hire phil jackson mr. jordan…..he cannot say no to you……

    • bigwes95 says:

it’s the other way around, actually. Jackson is the one who developed all the players and brought in free agents by talking to them often, not Jordan.

  15. sibogart says:

they should fire the owner ,not the coach…common!

  16. Francis says:

C’mon MJ… last season your ‘Cats won 7 games outta 66.. they played only 16 extra games this season but won 14 more than last – 21 in total… that’s a great job by Dunlap with a squad like that

    Isaiah Thomas says hello

  18. Mulham says:

Jordan may have been the best player in NBA History, but he is proving to be one of the worst owners / GM in modern day history. Dunlap inherited a mess and did better than many NBA veteran coaches could have done in one year. He took your team from less than 10 wins to over 20. Jordan messed up as a GM of the Wizards and now he is messing up as an owner as well.

    • bigwes95 says:

not just modern day, of all time, for jordan. I think dunlap did well for one year, they tripled their record from 7 to 21 wins, and they were in the playoff race for the first 2 weeks!

  19. Brandon says:

Prediction: The Zen Master will re-unite with MJ as coach with an ownership stake in the team

    • David says:

As great as it would be for the Zen Master to come to Charlotte, it would never happen. Phil Jackson cares about the same thing that Jordan (as a player) cared about, winning. Other then Charlotte not winning, they are not exactly a free agent friendly organization, so hiring Phil Jackson would be hard b/c you know they’d have to pay him a large sum of money just for one year of his service. If they don’t make some major changes soon, MJ should give up the whole player-owner thing. I agree though, Walker is too good to not be playing for a powerhouse team. Charlotte needs Walker and MKG but they some help. If Charlotte won’t help them then they need to be traded. Period.

  20. Canada Dry says:

Maybe it’s time for Michael Jordan to put his butt on the line and coach. He doesn’t seem happy with any coach. Don’t know what they were expecting out of Dunlap but 21 wins with that group is about all you could expect.

  21. steppx says:

    another moronic move by MJ

  22. Chris says:

Walker needs to jump ship when he has the chance. Haha I like his game, same with Kidd-Gilchrest.

  23. badlands75 says:

Clearing room to try to entice Phil?

  24. Big Euro says:

Unfair dismissal. He held the whole team to high standards and pushed them hard in order to transform their losing culture. Who cares if he ticked off Ben Gordon? Redundant Vets that find themselves on lottery teams are not pivotal to the teams future.
