Spurs Make A Reach on McGrady

HANG TIME, Texas — Apparently George Gervin had a golf date. So the Spurs picked up Tracy McGrady for their playoff run.

While T-Mac is only 33 years old, it’s been a long time since he gave coach Gregg Popovich nightmares with that amazing 13-points-in-35-seconds flash fire in Houston. Dec. 12, 2004, to be exact, back in the days when the 6-foot-8 McGrady was athletic, graceful, high-flying and could do virtually anything he wanted on a basketball court.

But since averaging 21.6 points for the Rockets in the 2007-08 season, McGrady has undergone microfracture surgery on his left knee, come back to earth with his game and was out of the NBA after sitting on the bench in Atlanta last season. Coach Gregg Popovich will likely use him in limited minutes to back up Kawhi Leonard at small forward after waiving veteran Stephen Jackson last week.

McGrady is eligible for the playoffs because he was not on an NBA roster at any time this season. His size can pick up a few rebounds and he’s always been a willing and adept passer. But the explosiveness that used to get him to the basket is gone and now he’s merely a jump-shooter.

McGrady averaged 25 points, 7.2 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.6 steals in 29 games this season in the Chinese Basketball Association, but was not able to lift the Qingdao Double Star Eagles, who finished 8-24 and in last place in the 17-team league.

Joining the Spurs would seem to give McGrady the chance to fill that one glaring hole in his resume. He is currently the only NBA scoring champ in history to never win a single series and advance to the second round of the playoffs.

“I’m just glad to be part of this environment,” McGrady told Chris Broussard of ESPN via text. “Something I never experienced while being my best.”

San Antonio always been a no-nonsense organization that rarely makes excuses and McGrady’s has been a career full of them, leaving a trail of recrimination in his wake from Orlando to Houston to New York to Detroit to Atlanta.

With Manu Ginobili trying to make a playoff comeback from a bad hamstring, Tony Parker not up to form since he suffered a severely sprained left ankle in early March and Jackson now banished, the Spurs search for an offensive boost going into the playoffs is bordering on desperate.

And, well, Gervin is 60.

damn, could be omen all over again if spurs get ousted in the first round by lakers. Don’t blame it on tracy because, he has never got past by first round!

  6. Chris says:

maybe he just needs to get into better shape? a TMAC in his prime. not injured… would give kobe and lebron nightmares. I wish he had not gone to houston. he might have been better off in a team which did not rely on him so much with enough talent around him that would allow him to work on conditioning and strength rather than just being the workhorse every night.

  7. TeeMoney says:

Tmac is a very smart player. He has one of the greatest basketball I.Q.’s in the game. ya he may be a lil old and prone to injury but he is still very capable! With atlanta he came out in the 2nd during the playoff and went for 12 before injuring himself. He is a good pick up! If it were not for injuries this guy would be among the greats, i still think he his, but he could have been much greater. I feel so bad for him, but hes strong and hes got this. I hope he get a ring, he is well deserving.

    Welcome back!

  19. zgillet says:

Finally, a reason to watch the Spurs.

  20. W/E says:

So whats the point of getting a crippled player like TMac and waiving jackson? It makes no sense, the guy should just retire he had too many injuries he is not even 1/10 the player he used to be 10 years ago.

  21. Kramer says:

Lets not get carried away here. TMac was brought in to back up Leonard who will be playing 40+ minutes in the playoffs so his minutes will be limited especially if Ginobli comes back. So don’t expect Houston TMac or even ATL TMac think more DNPCD TMac

  22. Johnny Bravo says:

T-Mac is not going to Make A DIFFERENCE!No 1 Will Be Able To Stop The #HEAT

  23. Reality says:

    This makes me so happy

  24. chon69 says:

I’m a Spurs fan and live in San Antonio but the truth hurts. More directly to the point, our bench has let us down in the last 3rd of this season. Younger players aren’t supposed to slow down at this point, but they are starting to look like they did last year, INEFFECTIVE!!!!

    TMAC for the win

  26. Willy says:

Not sure if Y’all saw his interview when he was boasting about making 10 million this year? The reporter was asking him if he had seen the Forbes article for the 10 most over paid players in the NBA. He had not seen it. Anyway bogus article but he turned around and said he has been under paid his whole career. Seeing how the Spurs are coached to speak as well during interviews and they all remain humble as well. But not Jacko this time. Icing on the cake, See Ya! No time for that.

  27. fat h says:

    Seriously Fran, such a hater.

  28. KillemAll210 says:

You have to remember that the CBA has a very loose foul system so to score in that league is still somewhat difficult. And given that he is only going to play 5-15 min a game behind Leonard, I’d say his offensive ability coming off the bench is going to work very well with the Spurs. He is still conditioned to play in the league and even though he isn’t what he once was, he can still hit 3 balls all day long. If the Spurs get to the point of having T-mac and Manu coming off the bench together that is a very scary secondary team. Both players are willing to share the ball and can still get hot at any second. I like the move.

  29. Obz says:

tmac get n shape asap !!! haters will love you

    • bostons son says:

LUCS5SPURS my team happens to have 17 rings but i agree with most of you Tmac has been pretty brutal in the past but he is with a good team now i feel like he will get his streak and fame back maybe if anyone could do it it would be the spurs

  30. isaac says:

he intentado antes dejar un comentario pero no he podido, creo que mehan bloquyeado estos las comunicaciones. necesito ayuda.

  31. Celtics says:

they got rid of Jackson cause he was making more than duncan..somewhere around 11-12 million and thats not worth the numbers he was putting up..its not like they-re depending on T-Mac, they only got him cause he has shown in the past that he can score and its only for this season so they have more money to spend picking up free agents in the off-season..good move by the Spurs in my opinion

  32. Vatomene says:

T mac is good to see him again in NBA , for couple of years was a great scorer.

  33. Vladimir says:

Good luck to T-Mac! He deserves a chance. Btw, there’s no such team as Qingdao Ducks. Ducks are located in Beijing.

  34. If you guys are doubting T-Mac, please watch those 2 videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoIti2HRJ6U and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7jSiL-wWVo and you will see how he did it in CBA… I know my man T-Mac is back and he will help Spurs alot more than yall think!

  35. wooderson says:

averaging those numbers in the chinese league says he is not up to NBA basketnall sadly. the chinese league is very very low quality. play patty mills and you might have a chance spurs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • SmoothMM says:

In terms of the Chinese League: I think you seriously underestimate the quality of that league. Not to say it’s on par with the NBA but I don’t think it’s extremely low as you make it out to be… Also, I wish Pop would play Patty Mills and Dejuan Blair more because those dudes are very talented. Mills is a speedster who can slash in the lane and hit the 3. Blair dominates the paint with inside scoring and offensive rebounds. Plus, both are solid defenders.

  36. The Flash says:

Awww, I was hoping we would sign with Lakers because Kobe was out. But still it’s nice to see him back

    T- Mac is finish..

  40. MikeR says:

He has his best days past him, but still can prove valuable to a team.

BTW. Why was Jackson waived anyway?

  41. Real-nba-fan says:

T-Mac been gone, feel sorry for the spurs..

  42. Name (required) says:

This only makes us 100x more excited for the playoffs 😮

  43. Lakers Fan says:

As a Lakers fan I’m happy for T-Mac and the Spurs. I hope he finally finds home in Texas and for Pop to tap his potential to the max. Maybe not as flashy as before, but can pick his spots on the offense, work his way back, and who knows, maybe revitalized by the opportunity and the potential of the given situation. Hope all goes well for the Spurs.

  44. bdeleon says:

knee-mac is back! he always injures his knee… this is his last chance to write his legacy in the NBA. Someone who have an unquestionable knowledge about basketball approves (POP) his return. How can you doubt that. wishing him the best. Allen Iverson is envy.

  45. Spurs Fan says:

Interesting move!!! It was sad to see Jackson get waived but I could see why his minutes were so reduced he hasn’t seemed to have that pop in his step. The author calls this move “desperate” but why not make a last minute decision like this? Last year we got jackson at the very very last minute of the trade deadline and he gave us an extra boost in the playoffs. And people commenting have a good point about the spurs bench struggling without Manu so I’m very excited about this move.

Overall my spurs are looking banged up (except for Duncan who’s killin it every night!) it’s really sad to see Parker not at 100%, before that ankle sprain I would say he was the #2 or #3 candidate for MVP, but GO TMAC!!!!!!! Give us the boost we need and prove that you still got it!!!!

    • HEAT FAN in MIami says:

Ain’t no POPS got time for daat! You could add the 96′ Bulls to the entire roster of the current Spurs, and you couldnt beat the CHAMPS. Can you even grasp…I mean, wrap your head around the fact that we have won 7 straight with 3rd stringers? Mr. Miyagi would have to clap his hands together and rub his HAMMY, and give Manu a pep talk about karate to get past the THUNDER, which we own. There is no way in HELL T-MAC is going to mean anything significant for the Spurs. We have better superstars, more of them, a deeper bench, all of our players have bought into the unselfish mentality, and better weather to boot. I will give you the coaching edge, and the big funda-mental IS playing above his pay grade right now. He’s a rock.
Also, there are some really pretty girls in San Antonio, which should mean alot coming from a guy in Miami. So you got that. LBJ is the MVP of the league and the FINALS again…End of story…#DYNASTY.

  46. Spursfan amigo says:

Oh noo!!! If Spurs get TMac, it means San Antonio will not get past first round………

  47. bout7 says:

    Such a shame…. should’ve come to Lakers

  48. Dirk Joeffy says:

a good idea to pick him! but a bad idea to waived jackson!

  49. Candyman says:

I guess T Mac or Michael Finley ? All they would have to do is give Finley the green light offensively which he hasn’t had in years. He was coached out of his playing style, he played his role so well that it cost him the last stretch of his career possibly.

  50. logic? says:

It was said that Stephen Jackson was disgruntled with his minutes. The Spurs have always made moves for the best long term interest of the organization. Unhappy player corrupts team chemistry (it was said that Jackson’s attitude was beginning to affect the locker room), and with poor chemistry the Spurs might lose in the first round again – see 2011 Grizzlies vs Spurs. In that series Manu was hurt and the San Antonio bench didn’t have any resembling an offensive threat. This year Manu is hurt and the bench has struggled to produce. Dropping a chemistry issue while picking up an offensive threat that is fine with a bench role? R.C. Buford and Greg Popovich continue to make smart decisions. Remember as recently as last year, McGrady was putting up 12 and 9 in game 3 of the Atlanta/ Boston series. This might turn out better than you think.

  51. Flying Raijin_41 says:

    T- back!

  52. Chris Brown says:

I’m excited to see how Pops will handle T-Mac, I’ve never seen T-Mac being handled by a great coach, its interesting because Pops is maybe the very successful coach to use older players and giving them the perfect roles for their ages, Stephen Jackson was already history but Pops made him relevant again. Exciting.

  53. fran blindbury says:

Fran has always been a t-mac hater even when he was still in Houston. Stop hating Fran! 🙂

  54. Spire says:

Tmac is probably much better than Kawhi leonard.

  55. S says:

    Someone please sign iverson….

  56. Stephen Lau says:

Haven’t been watching CBA. Don’t know how fit T-Mac is now. But looking at the no. he put up. Maybe still some gas in his tank.Hope he can spark a flash in the playoff.

  57. perkele says:

just as a heads up, the Rockets lost in the west semis in 09, T-Mac still played in Houston that year

  58. nahor88 says:

Oh, wouldn’t it be soooo ironic if the Spurs played the Rockets in the first round and lost?

  59. Harper says:

“leaving a trail of recrimination in his wake from Orlando to Houston to New York to Detroit to Atlanta”

Did you forget the team that drafted him? The team he left because he didn’t want to share with his cousin?

    Nice accurate reporting…

    • SmoothMM says:

Toronto, Orlando and Houston: Yeah. I don’t remember that in New York, Detroit or Atlanta.

  60. Franz says:

Hopefully this equates to another feel-good story of Kevin Willis & Steve Smith (2003) and Glenn Robinson (2005). Ex-All Stars that have never won the championship in their prime.

  61. Franz says:

For a second there I thought the Spurs had signed Todd McCulloch (the other T-Mac) LOL

  62. Trent says:

T-MAC is BACK!!!!! Best 6’8 player in the Western Conference again. lol

  63. spurs are looking bad at the end of this season but TMAC might be able to help them get through a round or even the semifinals.Glad to see TMAC back too.

  64. SpurForLife says:

Great move by the spurs. They need a player who can do everything. Create shots for himself, others, defend, and rebound. I TMAC all day other than Stephen Jackson. Great move, im excited how it will turn out.

  65. EfYouPayMe123 says:

lol they really must not want to make it out of the 1st round…

  66. DapperJay says:

@jonski22 : You mean they DO want that to happen. He’s not playing against them now, so to see him performing like THAT? That would be awesome and if he can get back into the dominant state he was in Houston and prior……the Spurs would be a hard team and I would love to see that from T-Mac. He could have definitely been better than Kobe had he not been plagued with injuries. Lets hope he can at least get to 3/4 of what he used to be.

  67. erric moritz says:

clippers dont have a chance ? well all year i been hearin people talk memphis this and memphis that . and guess what ?
clips gonna beat memphis , again! clips can beat the spurs as well as the lakers ,(who i predict will be a better team without kobe , but still wont go anywhere ) warriors ,jazz , rockets . denver might be an issue with there home court advantage but no gallinari .dont count out chris paul . or lob city .

  68. alp says:

greg popovich makes any player good…. so tmac? as a thunder fan im a lil scared

  69. The most successful professional sports organization may have a valid reason for getting McGrady.
Let’s wait and see. We are no longer in the middle ages so enough of curses and jinxes.
And as far as I know, people given unique opportunities will be grateful and will try to give their best. : )

  73. sanjay says:

spurs look totally burnt out and washed up! it is hard to see them get past semi-finals! And forget beating okc in finals! clipper/denver have a chance here!

    • LBJKIN6JAMES says:

That a good point, to me they dont look good right now, burnt out is the right word…they seem under-motivated, tired and old, i think even despite gallinari being injured, the nuggets can make a serious run this year, they are the new spurs, solid team, amazing coach and HUNGRY ! The clippers dont have a chance

      • LUCS5SPURS says:

      • jadfsnJ says:

  76. asdasd says:

and the first game back in the nba for t-mac can be against houston or the lakers. that’s just amazing. so happy he’s back where he belongs

  77. LBJKIN6JAMES says:

TMAC lol … why did they get ride of stephen jackson in the 1st place ? TMAC would be good on a team like the lakers right now or even the knicks, or any other short-handed team that is desperate enough to take a risk on TMAC

    • CheyPie says:

I think they waived Stephen Jackson for insubordination. Pop don’t play dat!

      • polscholes35 says:

They fired him cause he had bad eff. & was not good at all !
he averaged less than 6pts/game per 20 min. off action…
        Hasta luego captain !

      • MackDaddy says:

Only one reason Jackson was canned…. the right attitude, or lack there of.

Pop runs a ship of high morale and good morality. When a player rocks that boat, he’s cast off.

Now Jackson can watch the Spurs head into the playoffs on TV, and always wonder what if.

  78. Willy says:

Ha ha ha how old is Sean Elliot? Around 40 something he can still play! He knows the system. Kahwi will be playing Kobe minutes soon, which is not ideal. Spurs on a prayer struggling right now cannot imagine how they will get back to the mid season form and make a playoff run.

  79. Borg says:

Good to see Tmac back in the NBA.
