Could Delonte West, Knicks Make Match?

HANG TIME, Texas — How far around the bend do you have to go before you’ve come full circle back to the NBA?

How far do you have to fall before you get desperate enough for any kind of a soft landing?

Delonte West, meet the Knicks.

Marc Berman of the New York Post notes there will be more than a couple of teams watching as West makes his debut in the NBA D-League tonight when the Texas Legends face the Santa Cruz Warriors, but the Knicks may certainly be the most interesting of the lot.

As the playoffs draw near and the team that started out the season like a house on fire continues to look like a burned-out wreckage, would the Knicks be ready to take a real gamble on the 29-year-old point guard with a history of trouble?

Nobody questions his talent as a capable backup quarterback. He’s been part of playoff teams in six of his eight NBA seasons. But West’s career has also been marked by off-court problems that hardly make him dependable. He was said to be ready to make his comeback with the Legends earlier this season, but backed out at the last minute. Now he probably sees that the D-League is his only chance at a return.

The Knicks could be equally as desperate at the point as Jason Kidd, Raymond Felton, Iman Shumpert and Pablo Prigioni all have not measured up of late. After opening the season 18-5 back on Dec. 15, the Knicks are a thoroughly mediocre 20-20. They have lost three straight, four of five and 10 of their last 17 heading into Sunday’s game in L.A. against the Clippers. Having spent the first month-and-a-half titillating New Yorkers as the No. 1 seed, they are now far closer in the standings to the No. 8 seed and a first-round playoff matchup against Miami than to actually catching up to the streaking Heat in the Eastern Conference finals.

The Knicks would have to make a roster cut, probably the injured Rasheed Wallace, to make room for West and they’re most likely not there yet.

But keep an eye on how the current five-game road trip ends — with a back-to-back in L.A. and Utah — and how West performs in the D-League. Desperation makes strange bedfellows.

We need a scoring SF. Not a ticking time bomb. Delonte in the big apple. Woodson is losing it. We need to get healthy. Just weather the storm. Don t panic.

    miami should sign him

Nice one. I guess it is the first time i´m the one who´s able to write it: “Someone in LeBrons family will be realy happy

    • awefna says:

that would never happen, you do remember the whole thing with him and Lebron’s mom right?

  3. The NBARulezz says:

i think miami should sign him to it would be cool to see him play with LeBron and Wade,Allen

  4. #1knicksfan says:

knicks need young players and melo to get out of his slump

  5. pej says:

Delonte could still provide good performance as back up guard as long as his concentration is 100% on his job.

    • RH says:

Even a distracted Delonte West is better than a concentrated Pablo Prigioni. Knicks are already guard-heavy with Felton, Kidd, Shumpert, JR Smith, White, and Prigioni. Do not drop Sheed. Even with a broken foot he can hit 3′s better than Prigioni.

I guess according to this guy the hawks, celtics, nets, and the bucks have all caught up to the knicks putting them in the 8th seed….

  7. shkumbin boshnjaku says:

knicks are as bad as they come

    • Afnan says:

For starters the last thing the knicks need is a small guard they need size and rebounding and if young big guys the knicks are as small as the lakers second unit they need size not guards with melo and stat out + wallace out with camby not playing 100% then they need bigs and maybe more playing time for Chris copelend forget everyone else the knicks roaster just need bigs and delonte is not good fit with the knicks

  8. sports fan says:

It’s karma, the Knicks didn’t want to keep Jeremy Lin & now they’re hurting at the point position. They should trade Carmelo for 2-3 good players and they’ll end up like Denver – playing great with great chemistry.

    • Lakers Fan says:

It’s not like they would be any better with Jeremy Lin. I loved watching him when he was on the Knicks, but he’s pretty overrated in my opinion. He was a hype due to his ethnicity, definitely not worth the money he is being paid right now. Knicks just need to get healthy. When healthy, the Knicks are a championship caliber team and a huge threat to Miami. Trading Carmelo would be ridiculous. He is the biggest reason why the team was even winning in the first place.

  9. eitan says:

could be a good for the spurs -
    1. parker still out.
    2. they will probably meet westbrook in the west finals or d-wade at the finat he is a good match up off the bench for those two.

  10. richard from new jersey says:

nets and spurs could need a little help

  11. Skc4x says:

Knicks should sign T-Mac not him.

I do not understand D.West. He can play ball but off the court? Long term not a good decision. But this season. Perhaps. Only a few games to go.

  13. Roy says:

No please do not bring that no good scrub to the Knicks I’d like them to have a chance at a title please.

  14. Schoowow says:

NYK need size ? hmm… Kurt Thomas, Rashid Wallace, K.Mart, Chandler, Stoudmayer, are all too small, not to mention Copeland and Anthony. tell you wh

  15. Schoowow says:

Tell you what, it is not size they need, it is a small forward. Anthony can shoot threes and Shid can, perhaps Thomas can, but they don’t have a small forward to guard a guy like LeBron. Too many guards, with not even one that could guard Wade or Allen, not sure which NYK player can guard D-Will and CP3. All the size in the world, and who could guard a Howard ? All the big men a coach could dream on, but no one to take rebounds.
Bottom line, NYK going no where. Back to the beginning. They can start a rebuild. from scratch.

  16. chocolateman says:

    Allen Iverson please Kincks.

  17. vcbc says:

    chandler

  18. Kevin says:

If Wallace can’t come back why not? Plus west is a Combo Guard The questions is where is his mental at?

  19. HIBACHI says:

they should get a scoring pg/sg, in my opinion I would say Gilbert Arenas, would be a great fit for woody’s system, I believe!!

  20. Bob M says:

Uh, no Delonte West would have a real hard time in NYC. Plus, he has very little emotional control. That is bad for the team and the locker room. There is a reason that people keep him for a year and release him. He does good things, does bad things, and you don’t know what he is going to give you on any given day. That’s no way to live.

  21. TMACISBACK says:

Knicks May Needing a Playmaker like Tracy McGrady They Him especially when it comes to Playoffs Series

  22. Dan says:

What the Knicks need is youth. They have bigs, but mostly older bigs. They have lots of guards already. They need youth at the SF, PF and Center positions. They should have never traded away Brewer. He was a good defensive player. They will need that if they are going anywhere in the playoffs.

  23. Mike says:

Allen Iverson sign him he has played with most of the players already in Denver… 2 year deal he will be a major help

  24. bitch please says:

no he’s not suitable for miami haha

  25. Rocket33 says:

If the Knicks are interested in Delonte West it suggests they are looking for a guard and don’t care if he has a history of trouble. In that case they should look at two players who have more to offer in talent. Allen Iverson or Gilbert Arenas.

I also like the suggestion of Tracy McGrady. He can play PG and distribute the ball pretty well and should be better defensively.

  26. iSHAQ or SHAQTOLOGY says:

    YES!!
GILBERT ARENAS or ALLEN IVERSON to the KNICKS!!!

  27. ahmal says:

listen my knicks need a good defensive pg jason kidd is the only 1 pg on the knicks that plays ok d prigioni trys but often fails delonte has good d against fast n quick pgs we would need him 2 guard up against fast pgs such as kyrie irving chris paul steph curry etc

  28. Jeff says:

chris Copeland needs to play starters mins. That guy can really score and carry the knicks while Carmelo is out

  29. Scisca says:

I like this from NYK. They got Martin recently, now are looking at West. They are still trying to improve their roster. I don’t get it why the Lakers just sit on their butts all season and don’t sign Michael Redd for SF. They need shooters, he’s one of the best in the business and played good last season in Phoenix. Would fit Lakers like a glove. Also I’d like someone to get AI back. He deserves to play in the NBA, every day that he’s not there is a shame to all organisations. I don’t care who – Boston, NYK, Memphis, Dallas and many other teams would benefit greatly from him. Anybody, just get him back!

  30. Rachel says:

    Time for Lin to return

  31. vern says:

Either NY teams wouldn’t work for West. He’d be in a New York jail 2 days after signing. His off-court drama wouldn’t fly in the big city.

  32. johnson says:

this wouldn’t be happening if they kept Lin

  33. sanjay says:

does nobody feel here that 82 games are one too many, seeing the amount of injured players this season?
Despite monitoring minutes there are too many injuries to key players. some how I feel, they are better off with 62 game season. The injuries would be less and also the quality of play would be better.

  34. Steve says:

If Knicks are looking for youthful PF’s they can still develop, they’d do well to try and nab Nene at some point.

  35. valter says:

    Allen Iverson

  36. Heat r AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. jerri says:

Listen Knicks have a long history of paying old players too much money who are always hurt!!! There is a lot of young talent out there and every other time can always find them and develope tham……Knicks need REBOUNDERS AND GO GETTERS!! they dont need anymore SHOOTERS they got enough of them…..they need players who are ready to crash the boards….DEFEND…….THEY NEED HUSTLERS!!

  38. SHAQKOBE says:

    KNICKS can sign
    MICHAEL REDD
    GILBERT ARENAS

for spark up the Team… additional players….
