“Linsanity” and Rockets Expose Knicks On Defensive End

HOUSTON – First off, let’s get the Linsanity out of the way early.

That is, this notion of the Knicks as legitimate championship contenders.

In the past two games, the Knicks have given up 114 points to the Mavericks and now 131 to the Rockets. At this rate, they’d better hope that Jack Taylor and Grinnell College aren’t looming out there on the schedule.

“This was unacceptable tonight,” said coach Mike Woodson. “An awful performance on our part.”

The Knicks looked like your uncle during his post-Thanksgiving dinner nap, lying with pants undone on sofa while some kind of game was being played in the background.

They let James Harden look like a Formula 1 race car, making twists and turns and switchbacks all night long through the lane. They turned Chandler Parsons into a hybrid of Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain and for all anybody knows, he might still be out there on the Toyota Center floor hoisting jumpers.

“I thought we had lapses all over the place,” said center Tyson Chandler. I take responsibility for that. I got to get my team and myself better.”

It is hard to write it off as just one of those nights that happens from time to time over the course of the long NBA seasons when it happen twice in succession.

In Dallas and in Houston the Knicks did not defend the perimeter and did not contest anyone who showed the slightest inclination to take the ball to the basket. They allowed easy layups to be scored with impunity and they almost never got back down the floor on defense. The New York big men were never quick enough to adjust and stop anyone at the rim.

As if giving up 72 points in the first half wasn’t embarrassment enough, at one point in the second half, Jeremy Lin led a 3-on-2 fast break and was blocked on his drive by Chandler. Parsons scrambled to get the ball, looked around, and then flipped it to Omer Asik, who gathered himself and finally slammed it with both hands through the rim. At that point, the other three Knicks defenders had still not run past midcourt to get into the play.

“It was definitely unacceptable, embarrassing to lose like that,” said Carmelo Anthony. “We feel like we’re a good team, so we’ll bounce back…we’ll be fine.”

Not if Anthony wants to spend defensive possessions arguing with a referee with his back turned to the play while Patrick Patterson roars in for a dunk. Not if Anthony wants to stand in the locker room after the game and wonder how it was that he was only given two free throws on the night without considering that the dozen 3-pointers he jacked up might have had something to do with it.

Just the idea that the Knicks could attempt 39 treys on the night — making 17 — and still lose by 28 points said that all anyone needed to about where their heads were.

The 6-0 start is fading fast along with the “Linsanity” that it was going to last.

I am a huge knicks fan, but I hate Carmelo and his selfish ways.
he is the reason I am hoping they dont even make the playoffs..

please ask for a trade melo.

Let’s wait if the Knicks can still play the same way now when Amare comes back!

The best and fun article to read today! ROFL
Knicks looked like a joke playing against Rockets yesterday, 28 points difference. This is an eye opener.

    LINcredible!

  7. Review the Stats says:

Jeremy Lin is a good pg and I think people who say he isn’t worth the contract are ridiculous. He’s worth more than 25 million just from sales and sponsorship even if he sits on the bench. Plus, he’s a nice and hard working guy. IMO there are way more ridiculous contracts in the NBA like Amare’s. All this blame on Melo is annoying too and I don’t even like the Knicks. Melo’s been playing hard and the Knicks have one of the best records right now.

Why is it different when the Knicks have a couple of bad nights than any other team doing the same thing? The Knicks will always be hated on. I still have faith that Melo and the gang will be real contenders this year. I predict the Knicks vs. Grizzlies (or possibly Clippers) in the finals this year. Maybe if they win a championship the haters will shut up. Maybe. But I won’t hold my breath.

    • Batto says:

Knicks wont make it past second round and grizzlies will barely make it to western conference . Knicks winning this year is a joke

The knicks CLEARLY got a little tired in their last 3 games, when u start playing bad on defence it means that ur energy is low and that ur tired, their team is old and that was supposed to happen at some point and it will happen again cause is normal, but they are a good team and they are gunna own this year, the only problem is gunna be the playoffs were i predict that its gunna be very hard for an old team like the knicks to keep playing intence defence consistently defence in long series and that may be their weakness. The rockets got young players with potential i hope they improve as time goes by.

  16. The Rockets played lights out basketball. The Knickerbockers probably thought that they were going to win easily and got shown up. The probably didn’t see how well the Rockets played against the Heat, or thought that because they blew out the Heat, they would do the same to the Rockets. Well, welcome to prime time. Your team got whooped, plain and simple. Learn to accept defeat gracefully and give props to Houston, as is deserved.

    To the Knicks fans
This article is just dividends of the sins y’all done, fix the defence, fix the problems, quit whinin bout “haters” or you really ain’t gon go nowhere, get some humility, for christ’s sakes you was a joke team only 2/3 seasons back

  19. Rebecca says:

Fran, this is a terrible article about the knicks. You cannot base the knicks on only 3 games, they won 8 really good games. They just has a bad road game, they will bound back. GO KNICKS GO!

  20. vern says:

That’s a dumb headline! “Linsanity” and Rockets expose Knick defense. What did they expose? That the Knicks didn’t come to play. It wasn’t that the Rockets played so good as much as the Knicks played so bad. Don’t get me wrong, the Rockets played good but not one Knick looked like they came to play. To expose IMO is to show a weakness. The Rockets didn’t expose the Knick defense because the defense was never there in this game. They did take Felton out of his game. I think Felton tried to hard to prove he was a better choice and he ended up messing his whole game up. He said he wasn’t thinking about the Lin thing but it was obvious he was trying to prove something. He failed! Carmelo got fed up with getting beat up in the post with no calls. Even the announcers commented on him not getting any calls. Nobody on the team came to play. Chandler allowed a layup line. I don’t remember seeing him challenge anyone coming into the paint. Where was Rasheed? Coach had fouls sitting on the bench he could’ve used to slow the Rockets down.
It was a very bad showing for a team that wants to be considered one of the best. But nothing was exposed.

I’m not a Knicks fan and find this article just terrible.

  22. wuffe says:

Fran.. I’ve been reading you for years and will continue reading you. Find your editorials thought provoking. It’s good to see the GM, Daryl Moreys creation coming to fruition. He seemed to focus on athleticism when rebuilding the team, as the knicks were not able to keep up with the Rockets. That might change some when a few of their injured players at guard come back. , but I doubt it. The Rockets are a running gunning team. Even their bench is deep.

  23. findingfirstlady says:

Jason Kidd looked like a supporting actor in a Will Ferrell comedy about basketball. The Knicks experience will keep them respectable but the Rocket’s are a few pieces away from something really special. I’ve always like both teams but last night the Knicks looked like the overdressed old dude at the club sweating and doing his best version of an 80′s dance to impress the ladies but failing miserably. Out with the old…

  24. Greg says:

I never thought the Knicks were that good. But regardless, this garbage has no business being linked to on the official homepage of the NBA. The NBA is a joke.

  25. Jimsanity says:

From a Celtics fan that grew up loving to watch Dave DeBuscher, Clyde & Willis, not to mention Big East Basketball, it is sad to
continue to watch Carmelo Anthony, a talent that is so blessed, continue to fail and drag his whole team down with him. He should forget about Syracuse days, join the NBA and become the league MVP every year from that point on. All NBA fans will
root for him to do this. As for the Rockets, they are a good team, Hardin, Parsons and yes, Jeremy Lin, are fun to watch and great hustle players. I hope they win the NBA West this year. Peace.

  26. TC777 says:

The inquiring mind in me (though a little one) wants to know if last night’s game was intentional. Knicks have been playing well, with the best record in the leqgue, oh, well, now tied for the second best record even with the loss last night. The way our players played made it look like they were not serious about the game. It happened. it’s a long season, still 71 games to go. So I don’t really mind and am definitely not a bit worried. We will be fine. Go Knicks!

  27. Daniel Mccoy says:

Great for the man that put NY knicks on the map, Lin sanity is still an up coming star, he showed the Knicks . Spank City, Wooop there it is, another lost Ouch Lin great job

  28. Game Time says:

How is it Linsanity and the Rockets? Harden and Parsons took the Knicks out the game, and even without Lin’s contribution the Rockets would have won. SMH

  29. strawhat says:

knicks connot beat the heat in 4 games in the playoff anyway so y argue?

  30. Alan says:

It’s crazy after only 10 games, that Carmelo is talked about as the league’s MVP. .500 season is on the horizon

  31. wirlwindlp says:

Thanks Lin. You have shown Knicks owner that you are more precious than Felton Spencer or Carmelo Anthony. Note that Deron Williams..!!!

  32. James says:

this is an awful article, all it does is not only insult the knicks, but also insult their entire season that hasn’t even been played yet. you basing their entire season off of 2 losses is the same as people basing their entire season off of 6 wins. you must really have something against the knicks to post an article like this.

articles like these are why i read nba.com less and less

  33. star says:

    Terrible article.

  34. Nascent says:

Unexceptable game by the Knickerbockers, hopefully this lost does not turn into a losing streak. Hats off to the Rockets, it seemed like the old Knicks were on the floor. (All offensive little to no defense )

  35. KNICKFAN says:

Damn Frank! Two bad games and my guys are pretenders who don’t stand a chance?
Talk about writing someone off as quickly as Linsanity faded
It was a bad road trip, no doubt, but the knicks loss in Dallas wasn’t as bad as the box score, they should their usual fourth quarter fight and were one basket away from winning that game
Tonight was a terribly uncharacteristic defensive performance, Woody is gonna get our guys going, everybody knows it was horrible, the ship will be righted.
Don’t think it’s fair for you to discount all the work that’s been put it over the course of training camp and the first 10 games of the season, if the knicks track record suggests anything, is that they WILL bounce back and show that New York fight.
I’d love to see your article after a blowout knicks victory, don’t jump on our bandwagon then buddy!

  36. Big Kahuna says:

Wow, you are probably the biggest Knicks hater I’ve ever come across.

    1. NO ONE considers the Knicks as championship contenders 10 games into the season, but the good start represents SIGNIFICANT improvement.

    2. You claim the Knicks were considered championship contenders and then base your argument on demarcating them as contenders on a sample size of two games…. As horrible as they were defensively.

    3. You have ALREADY forgotten how unbelievably well the Knicks have been playing defensively prior to these two games, based on ONLY TWO GAMES. You could have chosen to write an article questioning the spurs, who gave up 106 to LA and lost by 18. Or Miami who lost to NY and Memphis by double digits giving up over 100. ( Granted giving up 130 with no OT’s is much greater of a defensive lapse). Nevertheless, it’s only 2 games,,,,,,

You’re such a fool and a hater that you couldn’t even wait until morning to publish your Knicks hating article. One of your buddies might have beaten you to it? Next time you decide to write an article bashing a team make sure they have played at least 30 games (decent sample size) and use the magical art of statistics to prove your point.

    Love,
Knicks Fan since he was 6 years old

    • Derp says:

If you’ve been a fan for that long, you should already know that nothing is ever as good or as bad as sports writers make it seem.

    • Bbob says:

If we had to wait until we have 30 games to write anything about a team, we wouldn’t have anything fun to read on NBA.com! These articles aren’t about facts and stats. It’s about entertainment. If you want to read something accurate with adequate sample sizes, read an article from a scholarly journal.

    • Tonya says:

Knicks will be gone first round of the playoffs again. Melo will remain ringless.
