HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – You knew it was only a matter of time before Presidential politics and the NBA crossed paths during this election season.
In a Sunday piece in The New York Times detailing President Barack Obama‘s ultra competitive nature, an unnamed aide to tells a story of the Commander-in-Chief (and No. 1 hoops fans) comparing his reelection team to the eventual NBA champion Heat and his opponent’s, Republican nominee Mitt Romney, to former Knicks sensation and current Rockets point guard Jeremy Lin:
This February, in an otherwise placid meeting with Democratic governors — routine policy questions, routine presidential replies — Gov. Brian Schweitzer of Montana asked Mr. Obama if he had what it took to win the 2012 race.
For a moment Mr. Obama looked annoyed, a White House aide said, as if he thought Mr. Schweitzer was underestimating him. Then he came alive. “Holy mackerel, he lit up,” Mr. Schweitzer said in an interview. “It was like a light switch coming on.”
No matter what moves Mr. Romney made, the president said, he and his team were going to cut him off and block him at every turn. “We’re the Miami Heat, and he’s Jeremy Lin,” Mr. Obama said, according to the aide.
We’ll know the start of the NBA season if President Obama is correct in his categorization of both sides. Election night will decide that.
Win or lose, President Obama will reign forever as basketball’s first and favorite Commander-in-Chief. He’s shown more love for the game than any of his predecessors.

Like the HEAT, Obama’s got that ‘SWAGGER”. lol
at least he didnt put Romtney at the Scalabrini level.
Well, when was the last time you saw Brian Scalabrine on the court against the Heat? Did that even happen, like at all??
And btw. Brian Scalabrine wouldn’t turn the ball over as much as Lin did against the Heat’s stellar defense, guess Obama enjoyed Lin stumbling over his own feet just as much as I did
OK, I just had to check that. I don’t know the statistics when Scal was in Boston, but Scal didn’t play in either of the 4 games Bulls vs Heat in 2010-2011 and in 2011-2012 he only made a brief appearance on January 29th in Miami. Bosh had put the game out of reach at the line and put Miami up by 4, there was 0.1 time left and Scal inbounded the ball. So technically, he didn’t even play a single second on the court in 2011-2012 either…
You ruined a perfectly good joke, genius. That’s why building Scalabrine’s skills up are so grand, because he’s the greatest player of all time.
If you can’t understand that, you’re just not thinking Brian Scalabrine enough.
WHITE MAMBA!!!!
lol
Please don’t bring your politics into the NBA this is the NBA not CNN! Horrible post!
Ouch!
Obama should apologize to Jeremy Lin for making such an unkind comparison. Romney isn’t even in the vicinity of Lin. Romney is more like Greg Oden or Hasheem Thabeet, all “potential” without any actual accomplishments to show for it.
What accomplishments does Lin have???
his poin wasn’t to downgrade jeremy lin.he was trying to say that romney is a good player who randomly exploded in to the scence with outstanding play.in this case the presidential race.he looks like a star right now but he’s gonna lose all that fire in a few games and just be an average player.this is my opinion with jeremy lin as well. but i’m not like favoing any candidate here i’m just telling you what Obama meant.
Sorry , , I can tell you, you left yourself wide open for this. Since we’re using basketball references,… Obama should apologize for the incorrect comparison to himself. He would be more of a Kwame Brown, So much potential, but lousy decisons,
Maybe the president should focus a little more on doing his job and watch a little less basketball. Pretty bad when you meet with your job concil less than you attend basketball games.
So you can’t do your job and still watch a basketball game? I work 60 hours a week and sill watched every game of the finals…. You Obama haters find something wrng with everything the man does.
Right, because the President shouldn’t to do anything besides run the country. No sports, hobbies or any leisure activities. In fact then next predident shouldn’t even have a family or be married so he can have a full 24hrs doing his duties.
cmon dude its 2012, there is a thing called TIVO, with all the commercials skipped I’m sure Obama can find time to watch NBA games. we should be glad that we have such a cool president
The comparison to Lin is offensive. Obama need not single out Lin to make a point. I don’t agree with his opinion of Lin… And others feeling the same way will think again when voting time comes.
the Lin supporters will play an integral role in who wins the election
Shut up
If you’re being at all serious right now, please don’t vote. That has to be one of the dumbest reasons to choose one candidate over the other I’ve ever heard…
Keep in mind the statement was made in February, which makes me think it was probably after the Heat-Knicks game just before the All-Star break where LeBron and Wade dominated Lin/the Knicks and cooled Linsanity down a little bit.
cool down is an understatement. i didnt hear about lin at all after the heat demolished the knicks with lin at point guard. some of it might be because of the injury but he is irrelevant now
Congrats on getting Jeremy Lin and Obama into a single headline. Now go hang your head in shame.
I’m a Knicks fan and I don’t like Jeremy Lin or the Heat. I guess the comparison fits well with my independent point-of-view.
dude , stick to your thing. keep it at bball, leave politics out!
You all fall for whatever this guy says. People need to stop voting just because he is a minority/black. That is the stupidest reason to vote for someone. I will not vote for him again. That is for sure. I am more in line with the conservative views since I believe in God and what the bible says. I will follow God; not man/the world and risk going to hell. It is best to follow God. Afterall he does hold the keys to hell, better believe that!
He’s more like the Knicks all that talent but no results…
i like the Brian Scal comparison, lol..
So he basically said he’s a superstar that needs another term to mesh after the first disaster and Mit is an upstart that can turn the league on its ear
The Heat dominated Lin in that first meeting. It was one of his worst games. The Heat gave him no space to operate. Obama knows his ball. I like Jeremy Lin, he has game and a great open floor game. However, the Heat did own him.
Go JLin!
This is absolutely ridiculous! Obama comparing his team to the Miami Heat, even though he has done absolutely nothing for the U.S.! This is taking a lot away from the Heat…considering they had an extraordinary season, and Obama goes out and says his team is like the Miami Heat…well still the same self-centered sob I remember.
“1 is 2 many” ? Obama is too selfish! Obama is too ugly! Obama is too …! We’ll never expect such an ungrateful person to be the US President!
Obama is lebron james, and romney is lin, hes good for a month or two, but then he will get injured and lose control and flop with wars, like with iran and but usa in a deeper depression, Mr. Obama is trying to improve what bush put us in a deep hole. legoooo lebron!@
Obama,
You will lose a lot of votes from all the Lin supporters.
the president just love basketball, he just love sports and comparing himself to the heat is not bad, he just don’t like Lin I think.
