Spaniards Chime In On Dream Team

HANG TIME, Texas — Maybe they’ve never heard the old saying about letting sleeping dogs lie in Spain.

It sure seemed foolish that Marc Gasol, Jose Calderon, Rudy Fernandez, Juan Carlos Navarro, Sergio Rodriguez and Victor Claver would want to wade into the debate about the merits of the original 1992 Dream Team vs. the 2012 edition.

And it looked a little sillier after the Americans whipped Spain 100-78 Tuesday night in Barcelona. Admittedly, Gasol did not play due to a shoulder injury and Rodriguez was strictly an observer in the final tuneup game before the start of the Olympic tournament. Nevertheless, here is the excerpt of an interview that was posted on Hoopshype:

Which American team is better: the Barcelona ’92 team or the current one?

Marc Gasol: Who has created this debate? They have, right? On a bad day for the ’92 team, the current team would lose by just 15 or 20 points against them.

Jose Calderon; It’s impossible to compare. That ’92 was breathtaking and we grew up watching them. (The current team) is also very good and if they win the gold medal, then you can start comparing. I don’t like to compare. It’s different players and different generations.

Rudy Fernandez: No disrespect to this current team, but I would choose the ’92 team. We all grew up with that team, I lived in Barcelona at that time, the players were amazing and they were the stars on their teams.

Juan Carlos Navarro: They are teams from different eras. Both are great teams, but I especially liked the ’92 Dream Team. I was young and my favorite player was on that team: Michael Jordan.

Sergio Rodriguez: I would say the Dream Team. That team in Barcelona was special for us Spaniards. Now we have two All-Star players, a lot of players on this team have played in the NBA… Something that was impossible to even dream about 20 years ago.

Victor Claver: The current team has to prove it. The ’92 team was the Dream Team, they won it all and they were dominant.

While we’ll concede that the members of Team Espana didn’t engage in any direct trash-talking or say anything egregiously inflammatory, one would think that it is not wise to give the favored Team USA any motivational edge. After all, that Kobe fella has a long, sharp-edged memory and he and his teammates will likely get to do their talking in the gold medal game on Aug. 12.

THAT GUY SOUNDS LIKE A HEAT HATER LOL. LOOK AT JAMES HARDEN AND CHRIS MULLIN, MULLIN IS A BETTER SHOOTER BUT HARDEN IS A BETTER SLASHER AND BETTER ATHLETE DEFENSIVELY JUST LIKE MOST OF THE 2012 TEAM.

  2. heat hater says:

  3. DHAM says:

NOW IF WERE TALKING SHAQ INSTEAD OF C. LATTENER DIFFERENT STORY.

a lot of guys here are saying how different the game has evolved now. many fans are claiming that european teams now are much stronger than the ones the 92 dream team fought. yes, that may be true, i totally agree. What i dont agree upon is how fans say that ’92 dream team cannot dominate in today’s game. REALLY?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? okay for argument’s sake, lets set aside the ’92 and ’12 comparison, let’s talk about the COMPETITION. Lets start on the # 2 ranked basketball team – SPAIN, Now lets check the match up. Do you honestly believe Pau and Marc Gasol will dominate Ewing and Robinson? or Rudy Fernandez giving Michael Jordan problems?? or their point guards having their way against magic and stockton?? I dont think so…with HOF players there, there is no way SPAIN will win against the ’92 dream team. The ’12 US team had problems with Spain – see the difference? How about the 3rd ranked team – ARGENTINA. Do you think manu can have his way against Jordan? you think Luis Scola can back down malone or barkley? again – if the ’92 dream team plays in today’s game, they will still dominate with around 30-40 point win margin. AND THIS 2 TEAMS (SPAIN, ARGENTINA) gives a lot of problem to ’12 US team…hahaha talk about swagger…but i still want US to win it all…

if we are going to compare the team now and the ’92 dream team it is simply go down to one word. . . EGO . . i do believe the ’92 played with less of it, they co-existed. .

  7. julian pacificador lll says:

i agree that 92 dream team is better than 12 USteam, but come to think of it,how many international players then was playing in the NBA??it has been 20 years since then, and international players are now better than before…

  8. charles says:

It sounds to me like they were speaking as basketball lovers and the 92 team was their heroes while the current members are their colleagues. I mean colleague versus hero? No contest.

  9. Andrea says:

Question needs to be asked AFTER the Olympics. And the comment “After all, that Kobe fella has a long, sharp-edged memory and he and his teammates will likely get to do their talking in the gold medal game on Aug. 12.” Team USA will not see a medial game if they don’t stay away from the “foul” game. But lets take one game at a time. France may be the only team that will fight for a win. And for ANY team that goes up against USA, those guys MUST be on their opponents like White on rice. Tuesday proved that USA loves the closer 3-pt line. They have to force USA to take the ball inside and draw a charge to have any hope of keeping the score close.

  10. slow down sea pea says:

really? better defense than 92 team? do u know how tough 80s and 90s defense are compare to 00s defense. these day players like lbj, kobe, KD get fouls so easily when someone barely touch them. the refs baby them and protect them. 80s and 90s players had to get knock downs, bleed or hob on one leg just to get calls today players are getting. when players like MJ, Pippen , malone and ewing turn on their d mode, they gonna go physical and nasty. today teams are too soft to compete with 92 team.

  11. Blah says:

Why is there even a debate???? 11 hall of famers!!!! enough said………

  12. Sea Pea says:

This team is just not as smart and cannot shoot like the 92′ team. This team could probably play better defense than the 92 team. But outside of Ewing the 92 team starters would shoot you out of the game and they don’t even need to dunk.

  13. Cian says:

This is the worst, most pointless and irrelevant article I have read on this website. Is this news?

  14. Gwoei says:

this article is useless, i’m pretty sure whichever team you asked, they will most likely choose 92 Dream Team.
heck, i’m sure true basketball fans around the world will choose 92 Dream Team.

  15. john says:

I’m from the US and there’s nothing the Spaniards said that was out of the ordinary. The original Dream Team was the best , but it’s hard to compare different eras. Nothing they said is bulletin board material. Go US!

  16. 16going417 says:

EVERYONE is talking about this, so why is it a problem if the Spaniards do it? The Spaniards have NBA players on their roster so they should have a right to chime in on the debate. You may think it provides team USA with motivation. However, it may provide Spain with motivation to prove they can beat team USA since the current USA team wants to compare themselves with the Dream Team.

I’m a die hard NBA fan from the USA and I even say the 92 Dream Team is better than this current USA team. You did not hear anyone say the 92 team had faults, but this current team is supposedly too small and they shoot the 3 too much rather than playing the inside out game. Not saying this USA team is not good because they are great in their own right and will most likely win the gold (they are not ranked number 1 for no reason), but they are no 92 Dream Team…..

  17. kobe24 says:

hehe hope this stuff makes kobe mad. mad kobe is always fun to watch….remember 2008-2009? =D

  18. newyorksteelo says:

92 Dream Team would win, hands down, no questions asked.

  19. Jeremy says:

There is NOTHING to this article…. Really. I bet EVERY TEAM in the Olympics answered this same question!!!!

Let’s ask them who’s better Kobe or Jordan…. How about Lebron or Kobe…. Then you can have something else to twist into a useless report

    • kILLarifIC says:

if derrick rose, dwight howard, wade and bosh were on the team for anthony davis, tyson chandler, iguodala, and harden then we’d have a conversation but this team isnt as good. were better off comparing 2008 team to 1992 dream team
