Report: Grant Hill To Join The Clippers

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — If there is a locker room in the NBA with better leadership than the Los Angeles Clippers, we need to see it.

Chauncey Billups, Chris Paul and now, according to reports, Grant Hill will all share space in Clippers’ locker room at Staples Center. That gives them three of the league’s most respected team leaders in the same space. The Clippers beat out their Staples Center roommates and their ace recruiter, Los Angeles Lakers point guard Steve Nash, for Hill’s services, per The Los Angeles Times:

The Clippers continue to put together an impressive roster, getting free-agent forward Grant Hill to agree Tuesday to join the team, according to NBA executives who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

He will be the backup small forward behind starter Caron Butler.

Hill, who will be 40 in October when training camp opens, has had a productive 17-year career despite ankle injuries that almost derailed it.

He averaged 10.2 points on 44.6% shooting last season with the Phoenix Suns, 3.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 28.1 minutes.

Over his career, the 6-foot-8 Hill has averaged 17.5 points, 6.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

Hill was swayed to join the Clippers rather than the Lakers (a team that had also expressed interest in him) after he met with Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro in Las Vegas on Sunday, had dinner with Chauncey Billups recently in Vegas and had a phone conversation with Chris Paul.

With both teams in Los Angeles beefing up their ranks this summer, the rivalry that neither side wanted to admit existed last season seems to be taking on some intriguing new dimensions.

Nash and Hill teamed up in Phoenix the last five seasons, each of them tapping into their own fountains of youth to produce at levels their years of service in the league suggest they shouldn’t have been able to. When Nash joined the Lakers there was a widespread belief that Hill would follow.

It appears he’s  joined the other side instead!

Since my childhood, I have always admire the type of game Grant had. I’ve perceived him to follow MJ’s footsteps, and he could have been, if not because of the injuries on his way. But despite of so many injuries, he survived and still playing in his 40’s. Will you mention those names who started playing in the NBA the same year he had, then see who are the ones remaining. That proves he is one of a kind, legendary and one of the best NBA players of all time.

Post repeated only because of the word admire without “d”. How funny my carelessness in typing was! lol

  2. Pedro says:

What a shame. Lakers should have signed him. People forget but he can play 2 as well.

  3. mj_shoefanatic says:

I think if we can add another big like Darko or N. Mohammed or Diop this team will be set to make another solid playoff run

  4. Wingwrenshi says:

I think the Clippers wants to put a team with lots of experience, beacause the players they have put together can easily cope w/ each other and dont need to wait for maturity.

  5. Tony from Sydney says:

Bletsoe, Crawford, Hill, Odom, Martin, that’s a pretty damn good starting lineup man. LAC has 2 starting lineups, scary.

  6. LBJfan says:

Grant Hill should’ve signed with the Celtics. “Old” players go there.

  7. K says:

With cp3, Chauncey and now grant hill they should just fire Vinny del negro and let those 3 share the duties of being player-coaches. Seriously, they’ll be better off that way. One of them will always be on the bench and they can take turns holding the Clip-board

    • Mark. NYC says:

I REALLY LIKE THAT IDEA! I dont know about the substitution patterns. Only 3 teams are probably able to do this

  8. New Yorker says:

    Hill is a good pick.

Now they only need a reliable center other than the mediocre Jordan.

Clips get a center and championship is going to be there.

  9. lbj says:

Grant Hill should play with Detroit Piston with their old logo “horse” so Hill will get back his old game it alwas a showtime!!!!!!

  10. rafloz says:

I’m a die-hard Suns fan. But I’m also a realist when it comes to the business of the sport. There’s no loyalty in the sport anymore, from the players or the office because it’s all about the money. LA Clipps is getting a standout player who will help the organization both on and off the court. A strong leader/teacher and a true professional. This is a super strong roster and I can’t wait to see the battle of LA now with Grant and Nash on different sides. Two of my all time fave’s. Good luck Grant and thanks for all the hard work in PHX!!!

  11. C springs says:

What is Grant thinking. At his age he should only be thinking about trying to win a championship. Not going to happen with the clippers.

  12. RocketFan says:

The Clippers let Nick Young go…who practically saved them in game 1 against Memphis. if they didnt win that game they wouldnt have won the series….they’re replacing an aging Hill with a young shooting guard….REMEMBER, the clippers got swept by the old spurs….they havent done ANYTHING to improve their shooting guard or center position.

    • Tony says:

jamal crawford is a pretty good improvement at SG….rocketfan plus with the rumor of them thinking of Darko I’d say they are doing pretty good, every player this offseason VDN has met with has said sign me up

bench: bledsoe, crawford, hill, odom, ?

  13. igi pop says:

Dam… Grant Hill just said NOOOOOOOOOOOOO…. I don’t want to win a Championship……… I’m going to play with the Clippers

  14. Giovanni says:

    and scal?

  15. Bullriby says:

It is a good thing to let N. Young go. No team that wants to be a consistent winner can afford to have a high quantity, low quality, low percentage shooter be on the floor for very long. Young was also a real liability at the defensive end of the floor, which players like Chris and Grant would not tolerate.

    • Mark. NYC says:

Crawford is a high volume low pct shooter and plays no defense as well. If they paid Crawford 9mil per for 4 yrs crazy. I could see them amnesty him after 2 years. Crawford and Young are basically the same poor shot selection shooters,Young is younger(no pun intended). Crawford a better scorer. Not worth 9mil if thats his contract

  16. Edwin_Lakers24 says:

Clippers and the Lakers are gonna own the west

    • NBAJAM12 says:

haha THUNDER! is still gonna beat the city of LA and you can take that to the bank same team that gets even better every year but definitly happy hill went to clippers because i do like the clippers great team lakers are overrated and done for awhile sorry the clippers have way better chance then the lakers

  17. Perry says:

Holy cow! Lamar Odom, Kenyon Martin, Grant Hill and Jamal Crawford on the bench?

  18. Ito says:

I think the Player encajariaa perfection in the Clippers would be Dwight Howard

  19. Blippers #1 says:

The Blippers are building a winner blood

  20. Koupilias says:

I really like the Clippers Roster this year … PG C. Paul (No Comment lol) and backup amazing talent Eric Bledsoe – I watched this kid in last year’s Playoffs and he was great ! SG C. Billups ( More like a 2nd General on the floor but he can shoot lights out) and backup SG oh well the scoring machine Jamal Crawford … SF C. Butler and backup good old Grant Hill … PF Blake Griffin and backup PF Lamar Odom (i’m seeing a resurrection here …) C D. Jordan Backup ??? (OOPS i don’t know yet)

I haven’t seen the Rookies nore the Sophomores of this team but it looks like a very good defensive team at first glance and I’m sure the Clippers are going to be great this year (maybe too great ? – WEST FINALS ?)

  21. ayoko says:

    who cares about the Lakers.

  22. Marvin says:

While its nice to see some experienced players, they should have let Nick Young stayed with Clippers, they needed someone young, athletic and a good shooter like Young. He pretty much saved some of the games last years because of his 3pt shooting.

  23. Sharquay says:

I think the Spurs would have a better locker room than the Clippers. But that being said this is a great move for the Clips.

  24. JoeJoe says:

Hmm, I thought Grant wanted a ring guess not, still a good pick up for a dangerous Clip team

  25. BillG says:

Grant Hill deserves to start. Caron Butler is a bum compared to him.

  26. Lakers get lou Deng says:

how could u do this to Nash grant? u should of joined the lakers

  27. SoulChorea says:

  28. toki says:

i thought hill’s choices are lakers, heat or thunder?

too bad for the lakers…. maybe they should sign tmac, i think he can help with the lakers’ offense

  29. oldiegoldie388 says:

Grant Hill needs to sign with a title contending team. Clippers are not gonna win a title in two years. He doesn’t have much
time left. He needs to get a ring and retire.

  30. Jonathan says:

Great move for the Clippers. A solid back up that would be a starter on any other team. We’ve done well this off season. Now lets get to camp and make it all gel together.

  31. Lakers#1 says:

I’m happy he did not sign with the Lakers. We need youth, speed and athleticism! We have enough veterans on the team already.

  32. LOL says:

Nice pick up by the Clippers. Hill will provide additional leadership on the floor.

  33. Lee says:

Good pickup for them…should be an interesting season

  34. Common Sense says:

Welcome To LA Grant!!! We’ve been watching you since Detroit Basketball!!Looking forward to having you beef up our defense. Teach these kids how it’s done!!!

  35. Clipzzzz says:

Clippers are making good moves. Their roster is looking pretty good, but we need to wait and see how it all comes together when the season starts!

    • Team Kobe says:

Yea but Lakers were really close but Lakerz were this close to getting him but we need young ppl!!!So Im glad he went there he’s gotta be a big help

    • Jeffx says:

A surprise no doubt, but when you think about it, it is a win win for both the Clippers and Hill. Grant Hill is one of the hardest working players and one of the smartest. He will do whatever is needed to help the team and this lesson can not hurt the youger players in the team. Grant Hill although 40 will make the Clippers a much better team. I remember watching him when he was with Duke, nothing has changed, he is all about the team. I hope he gets a ring with the Clippers although I feel they may be a chess piece short to win a ring. Good luck to him anyway he deserves it!!!

  36. Sk says:

how much is his contract worth?

  37. OLU says:

  38. two says:

Okay, so resign barnes then, get jordan hill back, and if possible, find a shooting guard backup, unless mini mamba can get his shot to fall in training camp.

  39. USATeam2012 says:

Hill is a good player. He probably can share his experience to the kids and surely bring them to the playoffs.

    • ajasjaksja says:

there older than you so don’t call them kids

Learn english so you don’t sound like an idiot

      • dta says:

        Hey turk,

The word “English” is capitalized. Also, you need a comma before “so.” Alternatively, you can use the word “that” after “so.” Finally, a period at the end of your sentence is usual.

Just providing some suggestions because you expressed some interest in the language and wouldn’t want to sound like an idiot.
