No-Trade For Allen? No-Brainer, Celts

If the goal is to get the band back together, then the idea of splitting them up again should be the furthest thing from the Boston Celtics’ minds. You don’t stage a Beatles reunion only to trade Ringo for Charlie Watts and a backup vocalist to be named later.

So a no-trade clause ought to be a no-brainer for the Celtics regarding veteran sharpshooter Ray Allen and, frankly, either of the other Big Three who might have been in position to request it.

Allen, an unrestricted free agent two weeks shy of his 37th birthday, spent Thursday being wooed by the Miami Heat. If Boston basketball boss Danny Ainge is serious about keeping his team’s core intact for six and seven seasons of the group that won straight outta the gate in 2008, he probably will have to do more than outspend the Heat.

That part’s a given; Miami can offer Allen only the “mini mid-level” exception of about $3 million, with the Celtics offering double that for two more years. Even if the Heat agreed to a third year for the finely conditioned but defensively challenged Allen, he still would make more in two seasons in Boston.

But that’s the key: In Boston. From various reports, it’s clear that Allen isn’t interested in being shopped around the NBA when his salary becomes inconvenient. He, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett went through that to varying degrees last winter as Ainge tinkered with short-term vs. long-term considerations. Such a move rocked the Celtics’ locker room in 2010-11, too, when center Kendrick Perkins of coach Doc Rivers’ vaunted starting five was moved to Oklahoma City. If Allen is going to change teams, this is the time to do it – by his hand, his choice.

Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald has been monitoring the situation, which has a few more wrinkles than just the impact of corner 3-pointers:

Allen told the Herald months ago that he didn’t want to have to sweat out another trade deadline after nearly being moved in the past, and word is the Celts are ready to comply with either a no-trade clause or a trade kicker (most likely the latter) that would get him a good-sized raise if he does get moved.

There also has been of Allen’s fractured relationship with point guard Rajon Rondo and frankly, we don’t know how much to read into this. There have been countless successful situations in which stars have regularly bickered to no ultimate detriment.

Obviously, Allen to Miami would be several levels of unacceptable for Celtics fans. He would be joining the NBA’s defending champs and the foes who snatched away Games 6 and 7 from Boston in the East finals. He would be entering into a pact not only with hated rivals LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, he would be allying himself with Pat Riley, the bad guy in Boston in all his L.A., New York and Miami incarnations.

Also, Allen would risk booing upon his return to TD Garden each season and perhaps even jeopardize a spot for his uniform number someday in the arena’s crowded rafters.

A trade kicker to pay him more money for the upheaval and lack of control forced on him by management? Hardly seems enough to placate a guy like Allen, who has earned upwards of $175 million in his career. But a rare no-trade that snuffs the rumors before they even can begin next time? That could be priceless, and the thing that gets it done.

  5. bu says:

Like some of you folks said here, it’s clear Celts are not 100% committed to Ray. Ainge has a business to manage. Allen is becoming a defensive liability, unlike 2 yrs ago where he was still young & healthy enough to play relatively good D at the 2. He gets burned every time against the better 2s in the league, not to mention guys like Wade & Kobe. Otherwise, Ainge would not be so close to dealing him for OJ Mayo last yr.

The 1 guys Celts can never let go is a healthy & effective KG. That’s why Ainge never shop him around. KG is the anchor & spiritual leader on both ends of the court. Same for PP as he’s one of the most versatile & smartest SF in the league. Rondo also.

If Celts end up getting OJ Mayo at 2, with Terry coming in, Bradley healthy & back, they lose a little on cluth 3 point shooting & consistency but much much more solid on both ends on the floor with these 3 guards & Rondo. If Pietrus comes back, he can also share some of the 3 pt load at the 3 or 2 with good D.

I like what one of the guys here said, Allen is no Battier. They contribute in dif ways. Battier can still shut down the other team’s top scorer or cause a havoc while lighting up 3s. Allen is much more consistent & deadly & cluth but defensively liability nowadays.

Too bad that Allen decided to go to south beach…… or maybe, he’s the spy the Celtics need to tell Doc Rivers all of Miami’s plays, weaknesses, & intentionally miss a 3 at the clutch for them!! hahahaha!

  6. John says:

Can we take this off of the front page of NBA.com now? I’m pretty sure it’s widely known that he’s going to MIAMI as I said aalllllll day long! He NEVER asked for a no trade clause and he didn’t ever seriously consider returning the Boston, he made that obvious as soon as the season was over.

  7. lC101 says:

this should probably be taken down now…

  8. lacolem1 says:

Hahahahaaaaaaaa!!! I love that Boston fans believe they’re owed more loyalty than what the Celtics showed Ray by repeatedly trying to trade him, taking his starting job, and pretty much backing Rondo in their private disputes. Neither Ray or the Celtics organization owed anything to the other or to the fans.

Ray, you’re going to love it in Miami getting open 3s 3 or 4 times a game and making the NBA’s best team even better. Boston, you resigned KB, picked up and excellent sparkplub in Terry, and hedged your bets with Avery Bradley. Let’s see who’s standing in the end.

all you fools go on about Ray selling out… NEWFLASH !!!! management did nothing to support him retiring there – they picked up Jet from the mavs, they have Bradley as a starter and have just thrown out a contract to ray, apart from Ainge being a douche and constantly saying he’ll trade anyone, which would be no good for any player… he’s a free agent, he gets NO LOYALTY from the club by being played from the bench after all these years of service…. Im a c’s fan, but more a ray fan so i hope he goes to the heat out of pride and smokes the c’s… PS how many other teams did he play for before the celtics… HE is not “your player” he did his job, he got you a ring, quit moaning… ps, his real number is 34….

  22. Choker says:

Let Ray Allen decide…. a happy player plays best when he’s on the team he likes….. Leave it up to him

  23. Mick Salmons says:

Ray Allen wouldn’t even be talking to other teams if Ainge didn’t try to trade him last season. Enuf with the “retire a celtic” b.s., Thats what Allen might have wanted in the first place until Ainge tried to trade him. With Terry on board, Ray’s looking at 15-20 mins playing time a game., might not even be a starter. if Allen has any pride, he’d move out of Boston.

  24. John says:

So this is what NBA.com has come down to??? Adding “Report:” onto the title of some nonsense article to try to get something to gain momentum? Ray Allen IS NOT asking for a No-trade clause and he WILL NOT ask for a no trade close because he WILL NOT be playing with the Celtics this year. END OF STORY!

  25. emopanget says:

go to heat or return to celtics

    what the hell

i think the best answer here is retire now so no ones arguing

  26. Sonics34 says:

Stay with Celtics. You guys we’re playing one of the best defense in the NBA. Get some pieces together and you can beat the Heat. Maybe the 2 new rookies can help. Give it one or two more years Ray. We love to watch Boston play

  27. peter says:

In fact his chance may be significantly better in Boston this season!!!

Boston’s starting 5 dominated every team they played, but they rarely got more than 10 points off their bench…and that lost them games, while also putting pressure on starters to play more minutes.

Name me a single bench in the NBA that could compete (basket for basket) with Jason Terry, Ray Allen and Jeff Green? Each of those guys will give you double figures every night, and that’s 30+ points from you bench…who can match that?

  28. peter says:

lol I love how Miami fans say ‘go to Miami, get a ring’

Did you not see how close Boston came to eliminating Miami last year with half their team injured and zero bench scoring?

This year they are healthy and they have the same starting lineup with potentially two of the best 6th men in the league (Green and Terry) – three of the best if you add Ray as well.

If Ray’s chance of getting a ring in Miami is not better right now then his chance of getting one in Boston…

  29. mrchie says:

The Celtics should give him his no trade clause – he’s obviously looking to retire as a Celtic if he’s even humoring them by asking for one. He deserves one too if he was to return – he’s be awesome since he came, and as long as he was healthy. The Celtics Management – you need to give this man his comfort.

its not abt the fans its abt winning the championship rite now heat the only team ray its not abt the money it abt winning another ring do what best 4 u

  33. danny says:

RAY RAY, KG signed and came back, you should do the same, you have already spent years in Boston got your first ever ring that city, finish you career there and leave the game in a positive note., going to Miami will create nothing but controvery…, adding jason terry should not be a bad thing, last year the celtics struggled to score at times but had good defensive. Addin Jason terry, adds more talent and another 3 point shooter in boston to shoot, more options and shoot be a good thing. and along the way they can mentor bradley, whose a good defender but not nearly the shooters the terry and allen is. When ever Allen or terry, needs rest they can afford to do it, because of the talent they have in that postion, Kg wants to keep Boston relevant for the next few years so he came back, you should do the same. If the thing between you and Rondo is not so good, as reported its your decision, but let us know what move you made, and why you didn’t so we can understand you.

  34. Manu says:

I want Allen to stay, but now that we got Jason Terry (provided the deal is signed on the 11th) Allen isn’t necessary. We need offense off the bench and Terry will provide that, and Allen is a defensive liability. For a team that hangs its hat on defense above all else, this is not good. The lineup with a healthy Bradley instead of Allen was much better anyway. I say keep Allen if possible, but for heaven’s sake, the guy’s 37: not for a three-year contract and not for that much money! If he walks, then all the best to him.

  35. brandonlott says:

i think ray allen should come to miami heat because that can be a chance at another championship and that will be good for the heat because lebron james and dwyane wade need him down there

  36. brandonlott says:

  37. Lakers#1 says:

Now, I’m no Celtics fan but sending the best 3-point shooter in NBA history to the biggest rival in the East (Heat that is) would be stupid!

  38. Steffen says:

If Heat gets Allen the team would become close to perfect. I hope he stay in Beantown.

  39. motionless 34 says:

so, sports fan, you re not ray allen, you re ray allen allen :)

  40. John says:

    Allen to heat already please.

  41. TV63 says:

Lebron doesn’t really want Allen as much as he wants to break up the BIG 3. Celtics were the only threat to Miami and will continue if same players are in place especially the Big 3. If Lebron pulls this off, Riley will be smiling, “Job Well done on sinking the Big 3 in Boston” Ainge get off your high horse and give Allen the no trade clause with perks. You owe him that on how poorly you handled the threat Of him being traded to the Grizzlies.

  42. ccb says:

Ainge has said several times before that he wouldn’t do the same mistakes C’s did waiting the McHale-Bird-Johnson-Parish core wear out with age and starting from scratch, yet he is making the exact same mistake this off-season. I can understand re-signing of KG as he usually keeps himself fit but Ray has had several occasions over the last two years regarding injuries and stability. He was basically lost the entire last season and only played like himself towards the end of the play-offs. I think we should sign players like Mayo to be able to keep up with the athleticism of our rivals, like the rising Nets/Knicks or our arch-rivals Miami.

  43. GOCHARLES says:

Ray, there is no guarantee of a ring or rings anywhere. You have the opportunity to go down in NBA history as one of the most respected and liked players. Why entertain thought of a Miami Heat culture you know you don’t fit in to?

  44. John says:

This is a nonsense article! Allen to Miami? Now that’s a no brainer.

  45. Sports Fan says:

I am a Ray Allen Allen. He has been good for the NBA. He has been a true professesinal unlike so many NBA ball players that dont know how to dress are speak properly. I think DA should offer Ray the best deal Boston can give. Ray is a hard worker. DA should not let him go because the team has some up and coming players such as AB,who has not proven himself over a period of time. I hope the celtics organization will take into consideration every thing Ray has don both on and off the court to promote and carry on the Boston fine tradition. Ray what ever you decide best wishes,

  46. mrkcsigue says:

Ray Allen don’t do it! go back to boston! #iamaceltic

  47. Bogs says:

The guy has been shopped around during the trade line. It will be better for him to stay on a team who wants him most. I used to like Boston but since the trade of Perkins I’m thinking that everybody is expendable in that team even Rondo who’s subject of trade talks also.

If he wants a good shot of another championship and to be feel important then I think the Heat is the right team for him.

  48. Celticsman says:

Ray should stay in Boston, beacause now the Celtics have more talent now adding Jason Terry, Fab melo, Jared sullinger, and Kris joseph. Plus retire as a Celtic

  49. IminMiamiB says:

Come on down to Miami Ray Ray. Boston is DONE for the next 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Seasons. The Heat Run Ish in the East don’t end your career on a Losing note. Haterz comment below :)

    • knicksrus says:

I’m not biased as I Hate Both teams, but I have to be honest if Ray wants to win another championship he should sign with the Heat. If he cares about the money and ending his career on a Positive light he should stay with Boston.

  52. trade1 says:

If the heat want Ray Allen, then there’s 1 solution that the big 3 can do.. each give up about 1 mil/yr to get Allen closer to 6 mil a year and he would be a heat, otherwise, why leave boston with all the pickups.. the C’s will give him a no trade clause for 2 years.. after 2 years he’s done anyhow and why re sign him at all if its not for 2 years…

  53. Psycho says:

Ray, I hope you read these things (yeah, right…a fan can hope though!). I have been a Celtics fan for a long time. When I speak of greatness, I speak of Bird, Parish, McHale, DJ…recently, it is Pierce, Rondo, Garnett and Allen. It just fits, man. You are embedded into Boston Celtic history whether you like it or not. You are part of a tradition, and unfortunately, traditions do not exist in sports anymore. The table is set for you in Boston. Prolong your career, get onboard for a Celtic return to the championship, and be a mentor to the newly-acquired underlings, as well as the trigger man for one of the best 3-point onslaughts in recent history. You HAVE to come back to Boston, Ray. And Danny, give him the damn clause!! Terry and Allen at the front…awesome!!!!

  54. GOCHARLES says:

There is nothing Miami can offer you, Ray, that is equal to retiring a Celtics where you won your ring, broke All-Time 3-Points record and most importantly where fans have respect, admiration and sympathy for you. Going to Miami is easy, not performing there is going to be a different story and it may turn ugly for you. Retire a Celtics and go down as one of the most honorable players in NBA history.

    • Sick says:

There is nothing Celtics can offer allen either, they pay KG too much while leaving allen hanging…
Plus adding JT would just cut the minutes of ray ray

  55. shanydawg says:

As a Heat fan, it looks like a nice fit. Feels like he shot 80% from beyond in the playoffs. But I can also understand him wanting to stay with his ‘boys’. I just can’t imagine this last move of his to be about money with what he’s earned – and he doesn’t seem like the type to have blown it all by now. I think the biggest thing is his relationship with Rondo.. if it is fractured, that could be the straw that fractured the camels back in his decision making. GO HEAT!

  56. Carrington Banks says:

how would ray be a sell out? His contract was up, and they offer Garnett WAY more money than they offered Ray, and then signed Jason Terry….so yeah….

  59. Ray would be the biggest sell out ever if he left Boston to go to Miami, what about your boys Ray what about your boys!! KG PP DR end your career in boston green Ray! Boston = legends

    • Basketball Fan says:

Do you think the management cares about “the boys”? think about it, they broke up the solid squad by trading kendrick perkins! Ray has no problems with the team but when your name keeps coming up around trade talks/rumors throughout the season then what does loyalty have anything to do with it? Ainge said it himself, if he had a chance to break up the big three for something better then he wouldn’t hesitate to do it unlike the late great Red Aurbach. All i’m saying is Ray, like Steve Nash, has been the perfect professional, so if he feels going to Miami will get him another championship then by all means go for it Ray, but if Celtics really wanna keep him then they need to do whatever it takes to show him they care.

    • Fire Flame Spitter says:

He Needs to take his talents to south beach. Ya Celtics Are dirt and last season was there last chance. and everybody know Chris Bosh was hitting paul pierce moms thats why they couldnt play right cause allen had to break the news to him in game 6. Bosh acting like he need rehab. lol paul pierce mom must have that good good. lmao bosh going miss the olympics for that

  60. steagle says:

I think this is a whole lot of nothing. Bottom line is Ray values himself at a high level, professionally and financially, and at this stage in his life, he is not going to pay cut just to try to win another championship. Losing his spot in the Boston Garden rafters is a huge thing. It’s a legacy thing. Winning two rings with two different teams isn’t something a lot of players are remembered for. But being part of a dynasty, or sticking with a city through thick and thin, IS something that will live on.

My all-time favorite player is Karl Malone, and when he joined the Lakers for his last season to try and win that elusive championship, I was more let down than I was excited about the prospect. For his entire career, his blood, sweat and tears had gone into the Utah Jazz franchise and his hard work put him in the record books. I completely understand why he did it – he did not want to go out without a ring – but he wasn’t in Utah on his last game. He didn’t get to say goodbye to the fans who had cheered him on for over a decade. Granted, he did return and had his own ceremony, but it was post season, and didn’t have the same impact as if he was walking off the court in a Utah jersey.

Allen, on the other hand, already has a ring and does not have the same pressure to snatch one up before he retires like Malone did. He is in a comfortable place. He is in a city that loves him, he knows his teammates incredibly well, and he’s still making great money for a player at his stage. There really is no reason to leave Boston unless there is some bad blood between him and other players or management, which I just don’t buy. Allen is a true professional and I honestly believe he would put any of that stuff behind him and take care of business. Personally, I think he should take a cue from KG and retire a Celtic, and become part of history.

  61. don says:

Wonder what kind of of role await Ray Allen if he decides to resign w/ Celtics.

How many minutes are there to go around on a team already featuring Jason Terry and Avery Bradley?

    • thisguy says:

ray allen will be coming of the bench as the 6th man and jason terry will take over keyon doolings former role

  62. Bill says:

Ray, we won’t trade you, will not even talk about it, will respect you and your mother’s wishes to stay home in New England, and we’ll hang your Jersey on the rafters along Larry’s and Couz;s. Can we now get on with winning a championship, please?

  63. Paulo says:

Not really sure if I’m that anxious to see Ray Ray in green for 2 more years. His speed and numbers are declining, he’s coming out of surgery (minor, OK, but he’s 37…), he will (?) be coming off the bench, probably unhappy about it and still fighting for minutes with JET. A lot of doubts. I think that developing E’twan, with Rondo and Bradley as starters and JET as the new scoring weapon out of the bench would do just fine.
But I love it when Ray Allen nails those 3’s from the corner…

09-10: Perkins in Game 7 = 1 more championship for Boston
10-11: Perkins Trade and quite honestly, we just weren’t clicking
11-12: Without Jeff Green, Avery Bradley, Chris Wilcox, and Jermaine O’Neal in the Heat Series AND futhermore, the referees decided not to call a foul on D-Wade (who I respect a million times more than lebron anyday) who blatantly SLAPPED Rondo’s Head as Rondo Drove to the basket…as a result of the missed call, the heat scored in transition and the game was lost. WE SHOULD HAVE BEAT THE HEAT IN 6 IF THE REFS WERE PAYING ATTENTION…
12-13: BUT, WE ARE BACK THIS YEAR BABY!!!! Sullinger, Fab Melo, JET, Avery Bradley, Marcus Camby, and most of all, a HEALTHY Ray Allen and Paul Pierce Puts us over the top…we gonna WIN NOW!

yah! the return of the ring 2013 NBA champion! Go CELTICS!

      • Godfather says:

Games are not won and lost on one missed call. To suggest that the refs missed one call against Miami resulted in the Celtics losing the Championship, well that’s ridiculous. Also FYI – Chris Bosh was out for most of that series, otherwise it would have been Miami in 5.

      • Green Nation says:

@GodFather, I agree in most cases, Championships, let alone Conference Championships, are NOT won by a single missed call, BUT, let me presen the case to you. Game tied at 115 all, and both teams are on a scoring drought for over a good minute and half. Rondo drives to the basket, and would have put the celtics up 117-115 BUT Wade Slaps him AND Rondo doesn’t get this freethrows (Which he would have knocked down guaranteed), so INSTEAD the heat have a 5 on 4 in transition with Rondo Down, and as a result, they score a basket putting them up 117-115 AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, gives them the momentum in the game. I agree that this one call might not be what ultimately decides who won the series, BUT if Boston were to get that ONE call going their way, they would be going back to Boston with a 1-1 lead, and the Celtics beat the Heat in the next three games.

Regarding your point about Bosh, did I mention that the Celtics didn’t have Avery Bradley, Jeff Green, Chris Wilcox, and Jermaine O’Neal. Avery Bradley practically helped the celtics win the sixers series and would have had a TREMENDOUS impact on the outcome of the series.

      • Adder says:

If wee’re going on missed calls, if refs were paying attention Ray Allen was out of bounds when setting up a 3-point shot, surely with that missed call Miami would have won alreaady in regulation and it wouldn’t have even gone to OT?

    • wadefan says:

so.. one championship then yes? well thanks for clearing that up

      • HeatNation says:

I’m pretty sure the celtics shouldnt have won in 6… LeBron went off for 45 pts and 15 reb in game 6 while the heat cruised to a 98-79 blowout win. A foul that lead to a basket could have been to the max a 5 point turnaround which would’nt have had much of an impact on the score so no the Heat should of won in 7 and that’s what happened.

      • ChicagoBullFan says:

Actually the celtics have won more championships than any other team in the NBA, they have won 21. The heat only 2.

      • thisguy says:

        @HeatNation

Yes that was probably one of the most if not the largest controversial call in this postseason. Celtics could have possibly went home 1-1 tied as they had all the momentum. like it or not that call did change the series. not only that call, there were couple more controverial calls throughout that series

That is what Boston needs to do

Don’t go to rival team for the sake of the fans

    Allen, Play for Knicks……

  70. thetruth says:

Ray Allen allen could do what Shane BAttier and Mike Miller did in the finals , but on a more consistent basis, his presense would also make scoring easier for the Big Three. Steve Nash might be the ticket to take the Lakers back to the finals and with all cylinders firing Miami might need a little something extra to beat them.(Of course it might be a one year older and wiser OKC in the Finals). With all the talk of a too old Boston going on they took the eventual winners further than any other team this year. Allen could also be great for Chicago as they desperatly need someone else who can score, but I don’t know if they are in the mix, regardless of watever moves happen from here on in, it looks like it will be another great season. My pick, boring I know, Miami.

      NOPE

    • Sixers ! says:

ray allen cant and wont do what shane battier did ! Shane played outstanding defense. Allen cant do that. If he tries he going to fracture his ankle, be done for the season and miami will be 3.09 million dollars in the hole. Ray allen is going to take mike miller’s role. Mike miller’s 3s were deadly in the finals and if ray allen is back to normal his are going to be deadly like always.Ray allen has a very underated penetraition(spell check) game. miami coaches tried to tell shane to drive more but he isnt as good as ray allen .
