Manu Ginobili ‘Healed And Healthy’

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — With all of the news these days about players going down with significant injuries, the San Antonio Spurs will soon welcome back one of their biggest names. Manu Ginobili is set to return sometime in the next “week or so,” according to Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, providing a boost for a team that has more than held its own without the All-Star shooting guard.

The Spurs are 14-7 in the 21 games Ginobili missed, including last night’s 89-84 win in Memphis. Ginobili was on the court shooting Monday morning, per Jeff McDonald of the Express-News, and caught the eye of both Tony Parker and Popovich:

The first bus already had departed the FedEx Forum on Monday morning, taking most of the Spurs’ traveling party back to the team hotel after shootaround.

Tony Parker wasn’t quite ready to leave.

“I’m going to stay and watch Manu shoot,” Parker told a Spurs staffer.

On the mend from a fractured fifth metacarpal in his left hand, Manu Ginobili lingered late to get up a few extra shots.

Parker wasn’t the only interested spectator. Coach Gregg Popovich also stuck around to supervise the session, which was closed to the media.

Later, before tipoff against Memphis, Popovich gave the most optimistic assessment yet of his All-Star guard’s progress.

“The doctors say he’s healed and healthy,” Popovich said before the Spurs’ 89-84 win over the Grizzlies. “It’s just a matter of conditioning and timing, rhythm and confidence, all those things right now.”

When Ginobili comes back he could reprise the sixth-man role he has played at various times throughout his career with the Spurs, but only to help ease him back into the action, according to Popovich.

It won’t matter to Parker and the rest of the Spurs, who will welcome back an All-Star in a season where so many others — Zach Randolph, Al Horford and now Chauncey Billups — have been lost for the longer stretches and in some cases the entire season.

Manu, at this moment, is the best players in the spurs organization. He is the only one who can not only create his own shot, but will it into going in! The guy is absurdly talented and without him the spurs are going to get swept again.

It doesn’ take much to see the physical toll on players around the NBA in the lockout shortened NBA season. Unfortunatley last season the Spurs peaked too early, add how hobbled the Spurs were. Many of the Spurs fans, seem to lose confidence, whether right or wrong. The Spurs look to be one of the best physically in shape team, add deep bench and injection of new young talent, have risen to the occasion, to get playing time and experience with Manu’s down time. I think it will be a good idea for Manu to initially to play the 6th man role for a while. Tim and Tony have risen to the occasion as of late . I didn’t think the Spurs would win at OKC and Memphis but they as a team without Manu have learned to play well without him. Manu’s return will stregthen the rotation and Pop can cut back on playing time of the older players. The Spurs will make the playoffs. I don’t think it makes that much difference to Pop but would like to have the home court advantage. We’ll see soon enough. Go Spurs Go!

Spurs would no doubt be the best team in the nba for not Manu breaking his hand. Even if he were to just score 10-15 points a night, that would have closed out many close games for the spurs this year. Spurs have the best young talent I have seen in the entire NBA with Gary Neal, Tiago Splitter, DeJuan Blair, Danny Green Kawai Leonard, and James Anderson. Not to mention the vets Bonner and Jefferson are playing really well right now shooting a high percentage from downtown. I like Duncan playing out on the perimeter while Splitter and Blair bang heads down low to preserve Duncan a bit more. It seems like no one can stop Splitter right now and they need to go to him more especially with the other teams tired late in games. His footwork and ball fakes are killing even starters on other teams. He is the most improved player this year in the NBA hands down!! Parker is playing like a true all star right now and will hopefully not disappear come playoff time. Spurs have a great team and chemistry is on a roll. I think this is the year we need to take it if any. Other teams might have all stars like James, Durant, Griffin, etc…but in the end, its who puts the most points up on the board. San Antonio can compete with anyone in a scoring foot race while also playing great defense. What is great about the Spurs is that anyone on this team can put up over 20 points on any givin night. Other teams if their all stars struggle, game over. If Duncan, Parker or ginoblili have a bad night, bonner could throw up 20 points alone on threes or splitter will kill people down low for 20. I’m loving this years team!!

with manu back the break is going to make a big run. The west is not that good this year, i got to give it to OKC they doing it in the west, however when it comes down to playoff they do not have what it takes to beat L.A.C or SAS Lakers are not going to make it to the western finals,

So proud how the Spurs have developed these new n young players and showing great promise for the post duncan era. I just hope Pops keeps paring Splitter with Duncan on the floor to give us that vicious front line we once had with Dave n Tim. Splitter needs to continue on the direction he’s going and keep attacking in the paint with such consistent accuracy and I hope Timmy takes the time to teach Tiago that unstoppable bank shot timmy has mastered like no other. I can’t wait for the highlights manu and splitter are gonna splat all over the screen. This year we might just win it all, it really depends purely on whether avoid any injuries later in the season and if Pops consistently manages the team the way he has been doing lately, with plenty of trust on the bench and newer guys. The Spurs should be unstoppable. Last season, it seemed that Pops changed his game plan from a faster, run n gun team that got us the 60+ wins that season and tried to return to the old Spurs half court game plan that has worked years before when Timmy and core guys could handle all the weight. He nearly left all of the bench out of the equation. The only way we can win it this year is if we teach these young guys like Kwai, green, splitter, Neal, n even anderson not to be afraid of the spot light and play like the champions these guys are meant to be.

  13. Jason says:

spurs are a great team and the spurs with ginobli will be even greater they will win the championship this year you dont have to have the best record but enough to be in the playoffs this team has more wins and playoff wins for the past 12 years so they are due another championship go spurs win i believe!

Hey priz unless I am mistaken did the Spurs not beat the Thunder just recently? Just asking, let’s see LEbron will go on vacation come play off time like he always does. Rose is the heart of the Bulls but has had several small and annoying injurites this season that have have kept him out of the game. If you know anyhting about the Spurs which i suspect you don’t you wiould know that they always step it up during the post season. Go SIlver and Black!

Spurs play with heart and for the love of the game unlike these other teams who play for highlights and money. When GINOBILIIIII comes back they will the dominant team, and kobe keep doing the spurs a favor and keep focusing on your stats and not your team. GO SPURS GO!!!!!!

THIS TEAM 17-9 WITHOUT MANU AND WE DISCOVERED,THEY HAVE 1-2 PUNCH ON DEFENSE WITH GREEN AND LENOARD.THEY MAY HAVE ALSO DISCOVERED DANNY GREEN CLUTCH 3-POINT SHOOTER ALONG WITH MANU AND GARY NEAL. KWAI LENOARD CAN BE DOUBLE-DOUBLE GUY IF HE NOT SHY AWAY FROM SHOOTING BALL TO GO WITH HIS REBOUNDING ABILITY.TIGO SPLITTER BEEN AMAZING AND WE SEEING WHY SPURS DRAFT HIM AND WHY THEY ARE BEST IN NBA IN SCOUTING. WHAT EXCITING ABOUT MANU RETURN IS HE MAKES PLAYERS AROUND HIM BETTER AND HE IMPACTS GAME TO ANOTHER LEVEL FOR SPURS.THE SPURS HAD PLAN TO TRANSCEND THIS TEAM TO BE YOUNGER IN LAST 2 YRS AT SAME TIME KEEPING COMPETITIVE FOR TITLE RUN IN DUNCAN ERA. MANU INJURY MAY BEEEN BLESSING IN DISGUISE BECAUSE AT SOME POINT POP WOULD HAVE HAD PLAY YOUNGER GUYS SO THIS TEAM CAN COMPETE WITH MIAMI,CHICAGO,THUNDER,WITH YOUNG LEGS.yOU CAN SEE OLDER TEAMS LIKE BOSTON AND LAKERS,DALLAS STRUGGLE AS THEYSTARS OLDER BUT BENCH NOT YOUNG.GO SPURS GO

Im so excited to get Manu back. He’s on my fantasy team and I was fortunate enough to have dropped him for a few weeks and still be available to get him back on my roster. I didn’t gamble too much I picked him back up last week knowing he still had two to four weeks left but he’ll be well worth it and luckily I’m still undefeated. During Manu’s time on my bench I didn’t lose but I did end one week In a tie but considering it’s not that bad.

  22. prix says:

Its time to make a run.. Spurs..with Manu back i´m sure It will be a stronger Spurs not the old and weak one…after all when playoff comes the Spurs will no longer be seen so it´s for nothing…OkC, BULLS,and HEAT are the one dominating NBA right now…

    • Jackal says:

Please son. OKC can’t beat San Antonio. The only reason they even got to the WCF last year was because they got lucky the Grizzlies knocked them off, who only did so because they got lucky that Manu broke his elbow the LAST game of the season. Take any team in the NBA, break their best player’s elbow right before the playoffs, and tell me how good they do.

FYI, OKC has lost every single game against San Antonio for the last 3 years besides one. And that one was @OKC and played not even a week after Manu broke his hand this year, so SA wasn’t really used to playing without him yet. Then they played at SA and got blown out. . .without even Many playing. And it’s not the first time, since 2 years ago they couldn’t beat the Spurs minus Manu AND Duncan, and minus Manu again another time.
