Battier Tweets ‘The Decision’

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – Shane Battier became the first NBA free agent to announce his decision via Twitter this morning when he informed his nearly 47,000 followers (and the rest of the free world) that he will join the Miami Heat.

The veteran swingman served as the perfect hype man for his own show, sending out signals late Wednesday night that he would have a decision for all those interested this morning. The tweeting of the decision was the perfect twist for what could be an absolutely wild weekend of free agent signings.

Players can sign contracts and offer sheets Friday morning, the same day training camps open around the league. Now if we could just get a few more free agents to spread the news this way …

Even Mavericks owner Mark Cuban seemed impressed, although he didn’t seem particularly fond of Battier’s choice:

Congrats to Shane Battier to showing sports media that if they dont change their approach , it will be changed for them. #wrongteamthough

Of course, it turns out Battier didn’t even break his own news. Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports beat him to the punch earlier in the morning when he tweeted:

Shane Battier expected to announce decision to sign with Miami Heat today, source tells @YahooSports.

@Vincent strength doesnt mean much when you cant help your time when your needed

    @Jeff
Yeah lakers all day??? We loss to the mavs… why no pg(undecided true pg) ….. no real center(undersize Anthony but good as a backup C)………. watch the Christmas games… Watch the HEAT playing with NENE……….

    You can now kiss CP3 and D12 Hopes Goodbye…. Ain’t gonna happen…

  3. SDS says:

BAttier is a great addition. he strenghthens miamis already great defence and can shoot threes. The heat were right in fixing the pg position first because they still got joel anthiny at center

  4. hsa says:

chalmers is not overrated, he has guts, makes clutch shoots, he should stay, dalambert would be good sign, nene awsome..

  5. Jeff says:

Heat will win like they were gonna last year right? Big time is not lebron time. Dude proves over and over he is not the best just a season stat board. Were all seeing the true lebron away from all the lies of no help and hes on his own. maybe he should try to lead no ride someone back. Heat only got 1 cuz the lakers decided to get rid of shaq. Lakers all Day.

  6. vincent says:

lebron is so strong the curse of the cleveland strong too why do the heat need the service of battier

  7. Dre says:

It makes sense on getting Battier because at least when Lebron has his down day like during the playoffs you have a backup that’s has great defense and some good offense as well. But the Miami Heat do need a Center with scoring abilities because Anthony has great Defense but no Offense

  8. Dirk says:

Who cares? As long as I’m playing, Mavs will have not one, not two, not three rings….but __?

  9. Hunter says:

Good move. They have the following pieces:
    Miller
    Wade
    Bosh
    James
    Haslem
    Battier
    Chalmers doesn’t really count(he’s overrated)
They need the center and I mean a good center and about two more solid players(point guard and back up center) and they could be set

    • ML says:

Well they’re going to need Chalmers if they don’t get an upgrade at point guard which is highly likely with their financial limitations. Also 1st rd pick pg Norris Cole better learn fast if they don’t get a decent new pg in this free agency. Their even bigger concern should be at the center position. They don’t necessarily need a great center, just one capable of playing good D and rebounding well (hopefully for their sake someone not nearing retirement like last year’s Illgauskas, Dampier, Magloire…)

    • HeatWave says:

Lol no duh then they would have a near all-star squad. Chalmers is a good backup point, not sure how you think he’s overrated. He hit lots of clutch shots in the playoffs. Anthony is a good backup center even for his size but we really could us Nene. That would have us set.

      • ML says:

Yea I think Chalmers did enough in the finals to prove he adds value to this team. It would be crazy if Nene was on this team but I guess anything can happen once free agency starts. I think someone like Dalembert would be decent enough.

  10. ML says:

Great addition for the heat; Shane is a high iq player that will provide the intangibles that doesn’t show in the box scores. But like a few of these other posts I agree that Heat’s primary concern should be who their starting center will be and also their point guard situation. If they somehow sign a center like Samuel Dalembert and resign Chalmers, then all they’ll have to do is fill in the bench to have a championship capable roster. Looking forward to Big Friday tomorrow! I have a gut feeling that there will be a few major changes for examples Chris Paul going to LA or NY. Dwight also possibly going to LA or another contender. As a diehard nba fan, Christmas day can’t come any sooner this year!

It seems like up till now the only names involved with the Knicks have been CP3, Superman, and Grant Hill. Now it seems like Tyson Chandler is going to end up in the Big Apple. Although, he’s not a superstar like Cp3 or Dwight Howard he is the key to the Knicks’ success. Let’s examine why they are the match made in heaven.

  12. Rip Greenfire says:

Improvement over Mike Miller, they don’t need a scorer they need a defensive stopper+ three point shooter. Look at the Grizzlies and Tony Allen, he made that team a physical gritty team that beat the #1 seed. I’ve always thought Mike Miller was overrated though.
Quick side note: Eddie Curry? Please Miami, you can do better than that.

  13. JJ says:

Moving Bosh and LeBron up a spot is still pretty viable. Although Bosh might get pushed around defensively by bigger centers there aren’t too many offensive minded centers out there anymore. Those that are offensive generally follow Bosh’s faceup mold, which should be an even matchup for him to defend. On offense Bosh can outmaneuver and shoot around the bigger bigs. LeBron will have no problems being a PF defensively nor offensively. This puts Battier at his natural SF spot. Its not a bad signing, but they still need a real center.

PG: Chalmers, SG: Wade, SF: Battier, PF: LeBron, C: Bosh.

  14. half says:

if you guys don’t see what happened just now is unbelievable battier and bron plays the same position ….bron cost us a championship last year (obviously) battier wants a championship if he goes cold again and do that they will play a system around d wade chris bosh and no other hindering personal agendas lebron seems to drag with him in recent playoff history

  15. Joe says:

as much as it sounds to me, not a bad move, really. but I know I speak for a lot of basketball fans that Chandler should not join the Heat(I would hate to see him in a Heat uniform), his attitude for the game has kind of tampered his value, plus with his foul troubles, not something we need in south fla. it is a big and strong possibility that we can acquire Nene if he’s willing to take a pay cut as well, or maybe trading both Bibby and House(cuz denver does need some help to fill that huge void that Billups left). hopefully Riley and Arison can make some wiggle room to get these deals done :)

  16. J says:

clearly the heat doesnt know what their problem is by adding another 2/3 when they really dont need any help in that position

  17. eddie says:

that is stupid move he think they can win a tittle with the 3

  18. Thats great battier might sign with the heat but we need a center

  19. zinger says:

With Battier they can play Lebron at point, Wade at SG and Battier at SF, not all the time obviously , but that’s a pretty cool line up…

  20. Chris Paul says:

Celtics plans to troll the Lakers by acquiring Dwight Howard (since Orlando won’t agree with the package unless the Celtics gets Gilbert Arenas and Hedo Turkoglu) and Chris Paul at the cost of Rajan Rondo, Ray Allen, Jermain O Neal, and Kevin Garnett. Both D12 and CP3 would be convinced to stay with the Celtics with Paul Pierce still around for a few years and their organization is good, plus Doc Rivers is an excellent coach.

  21. really says:

nice decision by shane and heat he is a “nice addition” to the heat as much as pains me too say..made the team better i still dont like the heat though..and kobe stopper really there is no kobe stopper. There are good kobe defenders but no kobe stopper

    • Gary says:

It’s a nickname given to guys who give Kobe a hard time. Not to be taken literally. I’m pretty sure Shane was the first one with the title though. Last year they kind of gave it to Kidd.

  22. This is a very good addition to the Heat. They add a premier perimeter defender to one of the better defensive teams in the league. Battier knows how to play the game and the fact that he makes very few mistakes should help the Heat in crunch time.

  23. HeatWave says:

Sweet we get “The Kobe Stopper”!

    • Wait a Minute says:

lol Kobe tore him up whenever they met

      • HeatWave says:

LOL you don’t even know what happen the last time they met in the Playoffs do you?
        2009
        game one Houston 100 LA 92 – Kobe 14 of 32!
        game two Lakers 111 Houston 98 – Kobe 16 of 27!
        gane three Lakers 108 Houston 94 – Kobe 11 of 28!
        game four Houston 99 Lakers 87 – Kobe 7 of 17!
game five Lakers 118 Houston 78 – Kobe 10-17 look at the score when he shoots less!
        game six Houston 95 Lakers 80 – Kobe 11 of 27!
        game seven Lakers 89 Houston 70 – Kobe 4-12!

Now some would say Kobe always shoots that bad, but he doesn’t that was all Battier. Notice that when they switched to Gasol as 1st option in Game 7 LA took it. When you have to stop shooting and let someone else take over it’s called getting stopped.

  24. GREAT MOVE FOR miami heat BUT I DONT THINK THAT THE LAKERS WILL HAVE ANY PROBLEM IF THEY TAKE BOTH HOWARD AND PAUL . HOWARD WILL COME FOR SURE AND REMEMBER THEY WILL ANNOUNCE IT IN A FEW DAYS AND AS FOR PAUL I AM PRETTY CONFIDENT THAT HE WILL COME SOON . THIS YEAR IS OUR TIME lebron !!!!
LOS ANGELES LAKERS 16 TIMES NBA CHAMPIONS
    BEAT THE heat!!!!!!!!!!!

    • eddie says:

yep i hope lakers win not stupid heat but sixers are better

    • Rolando says:

Yeah you’re right, LAKERS will get Howard and Paul maybe but they have to give up 3 main players to get those players. Bynum, Odom and Gasol. Thats ripping apart a team that had been in the finals 3 times in a row and won 2. With that said, Artest is well over prime, Fisher is too old and Bryant is 33, starting to slow down. Of course with D12 and CP3 they will add young stars to their team but that doesn’t say they will win it all. CP3 is not a done deal yet because his desire is to play in New York. Miami will win it all because they have the chemistry after a year together and now add some solid peaces around it and they will get to the NBA finals again. However, don’t count out the LAKERS and Bryant. I put my money on MIAMI vs LAKERS in NBA Finals 2012. Time will tell…..

  25. Zac says:

Good addition to the Heat but wouldn’t it be better to address the centre spot as their main priority?

I am not too sure if I am correct, haha?

    Thoughts NBA fans?

    • HeatWave says:

We need a center badly. Doesn’t have to be a scorer, just a young one who’s mobile enough to adapt to the Heat defense. Arron Gray looked pretty good for NO last year. He seems like someone we could land. Anthony provides pretty solid backup even playing against taller guys, but he wasn’t good as a starter. If all else fails expect to see Pittman in the mix lol.

    • David says:

I was under the impression that Miami is trying to get either Nene even if it meant amnestying Mike Miller. It would also me nice if they can sign Billubs because he is getting cut from NYC so they can sign Chandler.

    • ML says:

Yes you are correct. I have a gut feeling though that Pat Riley will be able to lure a decent (not great) center. I find it hard to believe that Pat & the Heat organization would sign Battier without a plan to fix the center position.

  26. HeatFan says:

Woo! I mean he wouldn’t be my first choice, so lets hope we can get Chandler too. But I am very excited that the Miami HEAT have a good backup for lebron. (notice my capitalization skillz.)
