DALLAS – Watching Lakers coach Phil Jackson pop Pau Gasol in the chest during Game 3 Friday night made it seem like he was angry that his All-Star power forward has struggled to perform up to his own standards during this Western Conference semifinal.
But Jackson jumped to Gasol’s defense Saturday, questioning the officiating in the three games and why the Dallas Mavericks are being allowed to move Gasol out of the way with a “high knee” deep in the low post. He said the New Orleans Hornets did the same thing in the Lakers’ first round series, courtesy of the ways the officials have been instructed to call — or not call — the play in those situations.
“I’ve resisted [saying] this the whole playoffs, but the NBA used to call a ‘knee up the a–,’ that’s what they called it,” Jackson said before the Lakers’ Saturday afternoon practice. “You couldn’t lift a knee off the floor to run a guy off the post — they’ve been doing that every time [against Gasol]. They’re taking him out of the post and he can’t get a tight post spot. We didn’t complain about it against New Orleans, but the Mavs are doing the same damn thing and until the league goes back to the rules that they have about playing post play, Pau’s got to move out and face the basket.”
Kobe Bryant came to Gasol’s defense, too, what with Gasol taking fire from everywhere — including this nasty Twitter smackdown from noted Lakers fan Snoop Dogg.
“He looks fine,” Bryant said. “They are letting the defender get away with quite a bit with him, shoving him off the post. But he’s not playing too bad. He’s not playing as well as we’re accustomed to seeing him play. But he’s still playing well … he’s doing what he normally does. He’s getting the looks he normally gets. He’s just converting at as high a percentage as he usually does, 65 percent or whatever it is. But he’s fine.”
Bryant admitted that he wasn’t his usual self in the final five minutes of Game 3, when the Lakers were outscored 20-7 during crunch time.
“The last five minutes is when I go to work,” Bryant said of the last five minutes. “And I didn’t do that the last game. I’ve got to make those plays. I’ve got to go get the ball and make those plays.”

I mean come on, im not sure there is a power forward left in the playoffs who can handle Dirk’s offense or even his defense. Dirk is really REALLY hungry for a championship. His athleticism will only go down hill from now on, and so this is his last hurrah. Im not sure you can expect Pau gasol to be better than dirk novitzki. I remember games where even Kevin Garnett (when he was with the wolves) could not stop Dirk novitzki.

BUT credit to kobe for taking the fall on that one. Honestly i blame the perimeter defense that game when kobe was on the bench for a duration in the 4th quarter. The Mavs got hot from 3 point line, then good ball movement exposed the slow defenders on the perimeter especially derek fisher.
Honestly i don’t think the lakers need more help in the post, they need more youth on the outside and they need better point guard defense (jason terry, jason kidd, and barea are having a very easy time in this series.)
You can’t expect pau gasol to defend all these short and quick players. As for that steal from gasol when he was holding the ball in the post, well this is what happens when the other team has 3 small guards on the floor defending and you are not exposing their matchups. You can’t post up when there’s a big man behind you and three quick double teamers in front of you. In situations like that you need to give the ball to shannon brown or lamar odom to expose the undersized matchups.
Again im not a lakers fan, but i think the weakest spot on the lakers team right now is derek fisher. And if you think it is pau gasol, and you think getting rid of pau gasol will make the lakers better, then just LOL! Even though he can look bad by the likes of Dirk Novitzki or Dwight Howard or Zach Randolph, there aren’t many other power forwards that can take on Pau Gasol. He’s shown up plenty of pretty good power forwards, including Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan. Lakers need a point guard that can defend and maybe make some shots, period.

Two talented bigs in the paint in Gasol and Bynum. The 6th man of the year in Lamar Odom. A defensive stalwart in Ron Artest. A competitor point guard who is a killer in the playoffs and rarely makes mistake in Derek Fisher. A superb bench in Brown, Barnes and Blake. And arguably the greatest coach of all time in Phil Jackson. They have never been this better. Never been this complete. If there is a team that could come back it would be the lakers. Its not Gasol who is the problem, even though he isn’t playing well at all, its the whole team that is the problem, they need athleticism, only one that is athletic is Shannon Brown, Mavericks have Chandler, Terry, Marion, Barea who are athletic, and also have great depth, and that is the reason why they can run up and down the court, that along with Dirk’s unstoppable jumpshot, the Mavs are dominating.

Gasol is a weak player. His fumbles are causing the team to lose. Instead of defending his pitiful performance, he should’ve been benched from the first game. The Lakers need to replace the weak, underperforming players with aggressive, high scoring players. first of all, Pau Gasol is a great player and right now he’s not the only one out there who’s not at his best (game). secondly, Phil Jackson might be a great coach, too, but with those Bulls (the one with MJ at his very best) most coaches would have gotten the rings, and with the Lakers, come on!, they used to get some rings every once in a while… just not this season. There’s nothing wrong with not winning a ring every year! Besides, they’re all not getting younger and faster… neither the coach nor his players… and it just seems (to me) the Mavs (not the youngest team either) are finally realizing, if not this year, they may not have another chance easily. It’s now or never. Kidd, Marion, Peja, Terry, and of course #41… it’s their last chance to get their first ring (ever)… and most of them would have deserved one. Give them some credit, too! Have people forgotten the impact Gasol has had the last 3 years while on this team? The championships Gasol helped them acquire? Sure, he isn’t playing his best basketball now, but that doesn’t mean his past contributions are to be forgotten. Not very many teams have been able to accomplish what the Lakers are trying to do now–make a 4th straight finals trip–and the impact of so many collective playoff games was bound to take its toll. I think there’s a possibility, albeit slim, that the Lakers can overcome this deficit. I still have hope. And even if they don’t survive, I’ll always be grateful and respect what Gasol has done for this team in the past. Win or lose, my heart will always bleed purple and gold. GO LAKESHOW

Being a Spurs fan, I’m totally disappointed with this postseason as well. That doesn’t mean they didn’t try hard enough, it means they still have work to do.

I am a die hard Lakers fan but they’ve dug such a deep hole there is no way they can get out of this one. With all the issues they’re having, i don’t see them winning 4 straight against Dallas, 2 of which will have to be won at American Airlines Arena. Pau Gasol isn’t playing up to his potential, Ron Artest is unreliable, and Derek Fisher is not an elite point guard. JJ Barea is destroying the Lakers with dribble penetration, Dallas is agressive off Pick N’ Rolls and they are killing LA behind the 3 point line and its become too daunting for the Lakers in this series. Realistically I don’t see LA overcoming this series at all, and it would be fair to say that they don’t deserve to. Dallas has proved to be the better team and the better team deserves to win. It doesn’t make any sense to drop 3 games in a row to a team that you have a serious height advantage over. Unfortunately the Lakers have met their match, and I saw early signs of their demise especially when they struggled so badly against New Orleans in the first round.
man up gasol. the mavs got called soft only a month or two ago and they’ve responded too it. this series has had very few calls which i have enjoyed very much. the refs are letting them play the game without calling little taps as fouls. thats the only way lakers and heat have been so successful…by getting little taps and flops called in their favor

Hi folks. We must be objective when analysing the case. Not with feelings but with logic. I’m a LAKER fan but not a crazy fanatic, we must accept that we lost this season, no chance after 0-3. There are several issues why LA came up to this point. First, psychological; due to Phil. He shouldn’t have acknowledged that he’ll retire before this season began. It had a negative impact on most of the players, losing concentration and they thought even they played sluggish whole season, they wouldn’t be punished since a new coach will take place. Loss of focus and discipline. This is true in all kinds of sports. (OK, this coach will be away 100% sure next season, so why should we care?) That’s why they lost a lot of back-to-back games before playoffs and eventually they couldn’t get up from their sleep in the playoffs. Second reason, again, due to management and Phil: very bad transfers before this season, rather than getting a bunch of below- average old players, they should have got 1-2 young star talent on the roster. Third; some key players are really old and they must be changed. Fisher, Artest especially. Fourth: Again due to Phil, offensive and defensive tactics are worn out, they should have played alternative strategies in the games, especially against Mavs, trio offense ain’t good against every opponent. Solution: 1. Get a new starring coach with new and more versatile, active offensive & defensive tactics, enabling Kobe, Bynum, Odom, Shannon and the newcomer youngsters play much more dynamic and fast play as in the olden & golden show-time days. 2. Say adios to Artest, Fisher and most of that junk bench. 3. Trade Gasol if possible with a high quality player, CAUTION: I am not against Pau, I do admire him but again thanx to Phil and sucking LA media, his pride is damaged, he won’t ever play confidently and motivated in LA team again. (of course, I know the salary cap options, but they should change the starting line and bench somehow!!)
what is all this Lakers aftermath of BS & sudden whining?…must be be a last minute, lame attempt to try and get the most out of the refs whistles for the remainder of the series, they should have tried this before dropping three games, not afterwards. Ron Artest & the lakers already tried a desperation move in the final possession of game 2 by desperately trying to get a MAV suspended along with Ron himself to gain an edge of emotion and to hurt one of their key back-ups that breaks down the ‘d’. Derek Fisher happens to be this way too, at times. but this type of dirty strategy is designed to try and get the opponent to react in a way that he’d also find himself suspended……did not work this time, SO LONG SUCKERS!!
It takes a team to lose the game, not just one person. No one hates the Lakers more than I do, but I think all the heat on Pau is absurd! In these series, Dallas has played quite well–but what beat the Lakers was themselves. I HATE THE LAKERS, but I’m smart enough to know that it ain’t over. No matter how slim thier chances are, there is still a chance and I have the highest regards for the fans who are still cheering for them win or lose.

Difficult to comment after two titles in a row , but lakers will be the best team anyway in last 10 years, a word for Mr Phil Jackson basketball teacher and unbeatble man of calm and knowledge ,we have only to thanks our teams and we are proud for all. I listened to Kobe’s post game interview on Friday and he actually inspired me to keep hope alive. I believe in him, its the rest of the team am doubtful about. As I said before, the refs have not been calling the game as they should. Its totally frustrating when the ref changes the momentum of the game with his bad calls, prime example was that travel on Bynum in the final minutes of game 3 when it was clearly not even close to a travel. I refuse to give the mavs any credit for their plays because I don’t think they are that great. Lakers is the better team and I think its high time they start playing like it and show the world that resurgence from a 0-3 deficit can be done…. LAKERS FOR THE WIN !!!!!!!

I guy who has been the help to bring the lakers to three consecutive finals can’t be traded. He is not having good games. The Lakers are always going to be the team to beat in the west, win or loose Lakers for life. I believe in the team, that they can pull this series off, it hasn’t been done before and is not impossible, it just has Yet to happen.

In Game 3 it felt like they made every shot in the 4th – Both Teams are battling on a high level and so far the Mavs were just better. And I hate to see in which direction the discussions heading. And don´t forget Bynum. Think not much Teams in this league have a center caliber like him. He would be a star on other Teams as well. So if they are really just loosing because of an average Gasol does that mean he is the #1 on the that Laker Team? Think Gasols average performance wich isn´t totally bad is just used as an excuse of some Lakers Fans. Just some not all! He just got beat so far by Dirk and a great Mavs team Defense.that´s it! And please don´t forget as great as Kobe Bryant is (no doubt he is one of the greatest all-time) he is not Michael Jordan. So there are no excuses. If this Lakers Team should really go down in this series it is just because tha Mavs and Dirk are just playing outstanding and the Lakers have no Michael Jordan on their roster. The Lakers aren´t at their best. They look tired, they don´t play as one. It´s like they´re missing some good players…but no one is missing. They are not hungry for the title! They won two already.
Dallas is THE team. They have lots of very good players. Two main stars: Nowitski+Kidd. Then Terry, Haywood, Butler, Chandler, Marion. Stojakovich for the threes. Forget it, they are far better than any other team. It´s just they didn´t look that impressive during the season.
IT would be faire if they won the title. They already appeared in finals against the Heat (2006) and before, no? It sucks when a team is very good and never wins a title, like the Jazz, because of the Bulls.

i think all those lakers fans booing gasol should be ashamed of themselves, the same goes for mavs fans that booed steve nash, though the cirumstances were different. im a mavs fan, but i think is a very very good player.hes not spectacular, but more a tim duncan fundamental guy. hes brought LA rings, got them to finals the last 2 seasons. come on. what more do u want. before some people start hating…no hes not tim duncan. but he doesnt have to be duncan to be an exceptional player. to be honest i think the mavs were just underestimated. the lakers bench so far just hasnt produced. dallas has many veteran stars that are way past their prime, but then again these veterans dont have to carry the whole workload they used to carry when they were starters for their respective teams. pejas getting quality minutes, marion always has, jet is doing what jet does. as for the dirk and kobe comparisons. theres no question about whos the better overall player, thats kobe. but i think time is taking its toll on him. he could do basically anything he wanted during his prime, but hes getting older and slower, and i think his ankle is still limiting his offensive options. dirk however plays a game that doesnt require a lot of atheliticism. hes one of the most unathletic players around IMO, but his skills have always more than compensated for that. i think dirk deserves a lot of credit for his consistend and clutch plays. hes getting better and better each year. hes playing a more post oriented and less jump shooting heavy game, making excelllent use of his size and skills.kobe can shoot, not question bout it, but jumpshooting is not how kobe earns his money. shooting, thats what they pay nowitzki for.

As I read these comments I am left in aww at these laker fans. So many riders of the Black Mambas **ck. We all know we cant deny Kobes’ game and as the best. Kobe is the only player in the Nba that drives to the basket and crys for a foul to be called 100% of time and if he misses he crys 150% of the time for a foul to be called. Kobe needs to get it done. Period. Gasol can be substituded by Bynum and Odom. Kobe there is no real substitute for. Kobe is having as disappointing series as Gasol. I don’t understand why we couldn’t be up 2 to 1 in this series. We clearly should have won the last game and game 1 but they keep letting guys wild open at the 3 point line. All the mavs do is shoot the ball, how can you leave them open times and times again? As bad as Gasol is playing, if they were playing defense they would have been easily up in this series. But i believe, lets win game 4, go back to staple and win, series is 3 to 2, then come back to dallas and play like it’s the last game in their career, the better team will come up on top. That will truly be history and the legacy of jackson and kobe will take a huge bump if somehow they can win this series and win the championship. Wishful thinking thou but anything is possible.
But losing this series may turn out to be a good thing. That way we will trade a lot of players, we got pieces that teams want. Bynum and odom for dwight howard is a start. So I’m not going to lose hope and quite frankly it’s annoying how many people are so ignorant and just talk about how every Lakers fan is arrogant, etc. If the Lakers play like when they do when the whole team clicks together for four games in a row, then they would get an amazing, historical win. However the chances of that aren’t very high as history tells us (0-98), and even if they lose, doesn’t mean they’re a bad team, just that they had a bad series.

But to be real though, Gasol IS THE SOFTEST 7 FOOTER I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. Even dirk is way tougher than him. As a huge lakers fan, i have always said to my friend that he was very overrated, that he was extremely soft, he can’t defend any player that faces him up (reason why we lost 2 against miami cause bosh was doing whatever.) When he get rebounds he’s soft, go strong for rebounds he act like he got no bones in his arm. When he get the ball in the post, he let the defender push him too far from the basket which makes him inaffective. And i have notices in these playoffs that he’s very soft mentally, just look at him in the interviews. A true baller so-called all star would say enough is enough and i will play better next game. Andrew Bynum said it after game 1 that he was being soft and not aggressive and that it was gonna change the next game, and he backed up his words. That’s what i like to see from my players. Gasol… i could go on and on on how you’re hurting the team, play like you played against orlando in the finals, or like you did the first two games of last year final, is it so hard against a defender like Dirk? You gotta be kidding me.

i’m a laker fan and i’m proud on what they have accomplished for the past 3 years. playing in the nba finals for 3 consecutive years, winning 2of 3. they maybe down 0-3 in the series but they still have a chance on winning. but if they lose, they have nothing to be ashamed of. being in the finals for 3 consecutive years is very hard to do and yet the lakers were able to reach the nba finals 3 times and winning 2 of those. if the lakers will be swept, i think what they need to address with their line up is the point guard position. fisher is getting old and is having hard time guarding the point guards of the opponents. they’re quicker and they are more athletic. pau gasol is still one of the best power forwards in the nba despite of his recent struggles. go lakers… lakers fans, don’t lose hope. if we continue to pray for the lakers, nothing is impossible. if they win game 4, it could be the start of an amazing history. good luck LAKERS

I’m a big Laker fan and a true Kobe fan. But I must admit that this team is getting old. And the inside game they’ve bragging through two championship runs is being exposed. Gasol is getting out of his prime, I must say. May be a lil early but that’s true, cause unless he gets more physical there’s nothing new he can bring to the Lakers in the years to come. And with the rise of good young power forwards such as Lamarcus Aldridge and Zach Randolph let’s face it he’s no more the best PF in the league. About Derek Fisher man it’s no comment, the man came in this league with Bryant and he looks like 10 years older than Bryant. It’s time foro him to be traded. Andrew Bynum needs to work back his shape, though he’s doing good in this series but his slowness is just shameful for a young center in this league. I think after the Lakers get swept maybe it will do some good to get rid of some pieces and make a new championship caliber team and move on from there. This dynasty is over after 4 years.

Tough series, I know, but I also respect the entire Lakers history and accomplishments. I am a die hard Mavs fan, and any Mavs fan who is real will know we don’t have any room to gloat, we’ve had it all laid in front of us, and have choked. This series was very sweet from my end to watch, but I know you can never count out the Lakers in any year. I wish your organization the best of luck in finding a good coach and best of luck next year. Real fans know that good fortune doesn’t always last, or happens only a few times if you’re a Mavericks fan. So, I have nothing but respect for Kobe, Phil Jackson, Fisher, and Gasol. Bynum and Odom, however, outta have their punk cards pulled for bein’ cheap shot thugs, and make Artest look wholesome. Oh yeah, and trade that no show Matt Barnes as well, he’s dead weight.
