HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — “And the 2010-11 Defensive Player of the Year award goes to …”
It’s April Fool’s day folks.
You know it’s Dwight Howard‘s award until further notice. But the Czar, Mike Fratello, brings up some very good points about the five quality candidates he has on his DPOY ballot.
One of the surprises, for me, was Andre Iguodala. While Iggy’s always been an above average perimeter defender, we’d have tossed Rajon Rondo on the list in his place.
And what of Thabo Sefolosha, his generation’s Bruce Bowen, and the work he’s don consistently guarding everything from point guards to some of the smaller power forwards?
Tyson Chandler and Andrew Bogut both present interesting options, when you consider the impact Chandler has had on the Mavericks’ defense (last night’s beating at the hands of the Lakers wasn’t a particularly compelling piece of evidence) and the fact that Bogut leads the league in blocks. And Kevin Garnett remains the best post position defender in the game, even after all these years.
But in the end we have to agree with the Czar, this is Dwight’s award until further notice.
As for that MVP conversation … we’ll save that one for another day!
