An Upset Winner For DPOY?

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – “And the 2010-11 Defensive Player of the Year award goes to …”

It’s April Fool’s day folks.

You know it’s Dwight Howard‘s award until further notice. But the Czar, Mike Fratello, brings up some very good points about the five quality candidates he has on his DPOY ballot.

One of the surprises, for me, was Andre Iguodala. While Iggy’s always been an above average perimeter defender, we’d have tossed Rajon Rondo on the list in his place.

And what of Thabo Sefolosha, his generation’s Bruce Bowen, and the work he’s don consistently guarding everything from point guards to some of the smaller power forwards?

Tyson Chandler and Andrew Bogut both present interesting options, when you consider the impact Chandler has had on the Mavericks’ defense (last night’s beating at the hands of the Lakers wasn’t a particularly compelling piece of evidence) and the fact that Bogut leads the league in blocks. And Kevin Garnett remains the best post position defender in the game, even after all these years.

But in the end we have to agree with the Czar, this is Dwight’s award until further notice.

As for that MVP conversation … we’ll save that one for another day!

howard should be mvp and dpoy. no one in the league has to carry their team everynight like he does. he doesnt play, they lose. teams whole strategy change offensively when hes centering the magic defense. biggest intimidator since shaq in his prime

  2. Jacky says:

Tom Thibodeau deserves the credit for what happen to Chicago Bulls
where’s the best defensive team without him being the mastermind

  3. Blazington says:

Dude, the best defender= Tony Allen.
First of all this was stabilized last year during the Celtics playoff run. He played what 17 mins a game, and averaged 1 block and like 2.6 steals or so.(just throwing up numbers not accurate, but should be close.) I mean and this year he has the starting job, put him on any team with defense or a team like the grizzlies who have little defense, watch those blocks, steals go up. And he does it without fouling so often.
I mean Big Men, Howard, KG, should have some kinda take-back in this voting, since Defensively there prone to get blocks, if they have skill. Shoot me being 5’7″-5’8″ I can cap a whole lotta shots, from smaller players. Same thing applies here. But its steals, blocks, and overall defensive effort. Wheres Wade in this?

  4. Mcsplosion says:

    Grant Hill for president !

  5. Kobe "Bean" Bryant says:

I’m All NBA everything, everything I do is amazing, every shot i take no one else would even attempt, gimme another MVP and my first DPOY i wanna fill up my 9th shelf with awards. you’ll can hate but i’m the best player this generation

  6. S says:

GRANT HILL deserves some attention. He definitely should be on the first all defensive team.

  7. Q says:

People think you play good D by getting blocks and steals. Anyone with half a brain know’s it’s played with your feet. Moving to stay in front of your man, hands up and not giving any ground. That’s why Kobe has 8 All Def team spots. Steals and blocks are helpful in other ways but real D is played with your feet.

  8. K says:

I think All-Defensive 1st team should be Dwight, KG, Grant Hill, Iggy OR Sefolosha, Rondo. Say what you want, but KG is still a great player. Don’t get him angry, just ask Alvin Gentry how that went. He proves himself on the court continuously, and despite what you think about him personally, you cannot deny that he is one of the greatest power forwards of all-time. It’s close between Malone, Duncan, and KG.

  9. Kel says:

Rose is improved defensively, but still isn’t great. He’s a great player, deserves MVP, but I think the Bulls’ success has to do more with Thibadeau than anyone else. He got the whole team to buy into defense, even Rose. They don’t do as well this year without him. I think they’d be a 3 seed right now if it weren’t for him.

  10. Cha says:

@lindiblegrahible : Yeah, they’re a good team defender, sure you can make a case that he’s the Bull’s best perimeter defender. But over-all, he’s not the best perimeter/on-all defender in the league, the Bulls are good because of their team defense, the defensive end is not like the offensive one where in one can shine and bring a team on his back on that side of the ball. He’s good but someone is a lot more deserving. Just like Rose is, he’s good, great even, but I feel like the root of their success isn’t on the offensive end, wherein the MVP should shine but rather their good team defense. That’s why Tom should get the coach of the year award but for me, the MVP goes to either Howard or Bryant.

  11. AD says:

    Ron Artest.

  12. durrell says:

ron artest will not be considered but he is a great defender cuz of his strenght

  13. The Rocker says:

i might also say Emeka Okafor

  14. Rajon Rondo says:

First I am still the best pg in the nba right now (the only reason I don’t average 40 a game is that doc wouldn’t let me shoot 90 shots).
Second Wade is to blame for every heat loss because he doesn’t run trough screens.
thirth the only reason Rose is an MVP candidate is because he is a Chicago native and the NBA likes hollywood feel good stories (example Ohio native Lerbron James 2 time mvp in Cleveland O time MVP in Miami)
Fourth remember the the last Boston Miami game, it was me who had the best devense on Lebron this season
Fifth my 3 steals per game lead to easy buckets for my teammates, the only thing those overrated swats from howard do is electrifying the public and giving the opposing team the ball again (90% of his blocks are goaltending anyways.
The only way an Howard team plays good devense is with ME on it (just wait till 2012 to see us both in green)

  16. Dirk says:

    Andrew Bynum?

  17. CH44 says:

Chuck Hayes…oh wait, houston rocket games dont show on ESPN and TNT..Dwight Howard it is

  18. BobKat14 says:

    What about Grant Hill?

  19. kentoyHouston says:

I kinda sadden because chuck hayes is never been in this conversation. He is the best 6’6 center in th league. He guards 7 feet guys that a 6’6 player can’t.

    • Jesse says:

the best 6’6 center in the league? dude he is the ONLY 6 foot 6 inch center in the league. rofl! seriously wow……..

  20. Mike says:

@ special k: Not true. Evidence: Dennis Rodman 89-91; Ben Wallace 2001-2003. But you may have a true point. This year nobody is in the conversation for DPOY who is not a starplayer on offense as well

  21. special'k says:

what the heck? grant hill can shut down anyone like charels said earlier he should be defensive player of the year the only reason he’s not is because he’s not a super star has anyone ever noticed that no player that is’nt a major part of ther team on both ends off the floor has won.

    • Jesse says:

dude grant hill is not known as a defensive player and never has been. he has 0.8 steals per game. that is not among the nba leaders. he has 4.3 rebounds per game. dude that is not even that great. there are so many other small forwards that rebound better than him and play better defense. grant hill does not shut anyone down. watch the games. he has 0.5 blocks per game. wow not even that good. when has grant hill shut down someone? yeah maybe a few games. we talking about a nightly basis. wow. does not matter if he is 38 years old. age does not play a factor in awards. even so his stats are no where near defensive player of the year. you have got to being joking. please stop. can’t take this post man.

  22. ryan blakeston says:

if it weren’t for being injured earlier this yr, i’d say joakim noah for dpoy…

    • Jesse says:

no way dude. dwight howard 2.4 blocks per game. noah 1.4 blocks per game. howard 14.2 rebounds per game. noah 11 rebounds per game. dwight howard 1.3 steals per game. noah has 1.0 steals per game. as you can see dwight howard beats noah out by far in every defensive category. you must be a bulls fan because you a bulls fan would make such a biased opinion. noah is no where close to dwight howard neither anyone else in the nba when it comes to defense. I would not be surprised if dwight howard won the award 5 years in a row.

  23. dking says:

award should go to grant hill.. 38 yrs old…yet he guards all position. examples are nowitzki, james, bryant, rose.etc… and draws a lot of offensive fouls too

  24. ryan blakeston says:

if it weren’t for being injured earlier this yr, i’d say joakim noah for dpoy…..

  25. Jesse says:

no question Dwight Howard wins Defensive Player of the Year 3 years straight! when was the last time a big man got 1.3 steals per game? Also he has 2.4 blocks per game and 14.2 rebounds per game. he crashes the boards, alters and blocks shots, and gets steals. heck as a center it is impressive that he has that many steals and is top 20 in the league in steals! this should not even be an article. the answer is clear Dwight Howard wins AGAIN. saying that luol deng, derrick rose, or noah deserves it is a laugh. as a big man dwight howard averages more steals a game than deng and rose. how you gonna let a big man out do you in steals? rofl no chance any of these guys win! noah on the other hand only has 1.4 blocks per game. that is not even among the best players in the leage give me a break. his rebounds are also no where near D12, noah has 11 per game. plus noah has been out almost half the season! these awards are for people who actually play a good portion of the season. has a player ever won an award being out 33 games? NO! these bulls fans are clueless. I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF DWIGHT HOWARD WON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR 5 YEARS IN A ROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Wit.15 says:

“hen was the last time a big man got 1.3 steals per game?”

      Nene, Kirilenko (09/10); Blatche (10/11)

BTW, what’s the difference between 1.3 and 1.0? It’s like comparing 4.3 and 3.8 rebounds, who cares.

      • Jesse says:

hey loser kirilenko is not a big man. dude he plays small forward. wow. those two other guys still don’t match up with howard on rebounds or blocks. defensive player of the year is obviously by a long shot dwight howard. yeah there is a big difference between 1.3 and 1.0 in steals.

      • QuestionMark says:

When was the last time someone averaged 1.3 steals and 2.4 blocks? Niether Nene or Blatche averages 2.4 blocks and also none of them have the size, length, or speed to alter shots like Dwight does.

      • Wit.15 says:

Guys, you gor me wrong. I’m not saying there’s a better DPOTY candidate than Dwight. It’s only an interesting detail with that 1.3+ stl. But IMO 1.3 doesn’t mean someone’s a ball-stealer just like 4.3 reb doesn’t mean someone’s board crasher sooo… who cares:)

Next question: he’s joining a pretty good company with that 1.3+ 2.4+. In last 10 years only 4 players have had such numbers: Ben Wallace, Kirilenko (three times), Josh Smith (twice) and Marcus Camby (once).

  26. ajay24 says:

ron artest 4 me, he is the defensive player

  27. Rajon Rondo says:

First I am still the best pg in the nba right now (the only reason I don’t average 40 a game is that doc wouldn’t let me shoot 90 shots).

rondo jajajajajajajajajaja stealing machina look a dwade stats for life best shotblocker (guadrs player) of all time and lebron its an outstandings defense rondo can not guard the bigs in this league lebron and wade they can

    • OKCKD35 says:

OK everyone, noone believes you people are really the NBA player just because your s/n says so, we all know real NBA athletes would not take the time to respond to a blog about why they deserve defensive player of the year. Just stop it

  28. Tenki says:

I won’t include Kobe in the Defensive Team. Wade is better at the defensive end.

  29. The Rocker says:

Garnett should be given the award although he isn’t the best shot-blocker i think he is the best power-forward in terms of defense

    • QuestionMark says:

But KG does about a quarter of what Dwight can do, Dwight averages more blocks than him, Dwight has more size, and speed to alter/block shots. Dwight makes the paint his own property, etc. There is no way KG can win it over Dwight

  30. Guntrix says:

Ron Artest deserves to be a candidate. I mean, last year he’s not in the all nba defensive team ..not even all nba 3rd defensive team.. even with his superb defensive skills .

  31. Sheed says:

DPOY awards almost always goes to centers (shotblockers) wich sucks and all defensive teams are nothing but a joke. I mean how is it that kobe bryant has 8 all defensive 1st team? Hes never even had one season with 200 steals and 100 blocks! And nowadays almost any guard in the nba can take him off the dribble! You see it almost every laker game. If kobe gets on d first this year somebody has been robbed im telling you. Ill tell you though if rondo isnt on 1st d this year im tottaly discrediting these awards!

    • what ever. you talk rubbish and who cares if you discredit anything.

    • QuestionMark says:

Defense isnt always about blocking shots, or getting steals. Contesting shots, not letting opponents get in position, disrupting the opponents offense, disrupting plays, etc, those count as defense too, and Kobe is terrific at doing that and that is also the reason why MJ won it before along with KG, and Artest. Howard didn’t DPOY the last two years because of shot blocking, he alters shots, grabs rebounds, makes it hard for opponents to score in the paint, makes it hard for opponents to post up on him, etc. thats why he won.

      • Vlad says:

exactly….besides his crazy defensive numbers (1.3 steals as a center, amazing) his overall defense is great. He is doing it corectly almost every posesion. Knows when to show up, when to back down, when to help his teammates;i also love that he knows the best moment to double (and when Dwight doubles it`s like a solar eclipse out there).

His game is much more than his athletic ability and his numbers.

  32. Shaquille O'neal says:

I should win the DPOY award..

  33. nauma says:

i think ron artest should be a candidate for the defensive player of the year…

  34. Lebron James says:

yeah we should vite chris..hands down best in the leauge..(sarcastic chuckle)

  35. Dwayne Wade says:

    heck yeah!! You forgot mine!!

  36. Lebron James says:

I personally think you left the “only name ” in basketball that matters. :)

  37. Charles says:

How can Grant Hill not be on the all defensive team this year? Seriously, he’s guarded the best of them consistently and held them under their averages every time. Howard is only a good interior defender and why? Cause he’s tall and wide! He can’t guard the perimeter at all. I think that’s why he at least shouldn’t be the top defender because he can’t guard every spot on the floor.

    • his job is not to guard the perimeter. impact is the key here and Howard impact way more on the defensive end, then Hill. that being said Hill is playing great D and this is even more impressing considering he is 38 years old, but that doesn´t count in the reward race.

  38. DJ mbenga says:

would like to nominate DWade for DPOY. and I’d pick wade over kobe in the SG all-defensive team.

    for MVP. it’s ROSE.

MICHAEL JORDAN: He took flight… and ROSE above all…

  39. I think I should win MVP, DPOY, and 12th man of the year

  40. carlos says:

iggy is my favorite for the award but il wil be close between he and sefalosha………………………………………….hey dwade it also a awesome defensive player ………………….bitch out howard

  41. Lee says:

i agree Grant Hill at this point of his career is a pretty good darn defender and even better this season, he should at least be mentioned as a candidate but i think it all goes down between Howard and Chandler, centers most of the time anchors the defense of the team so it’s fitting that they are the favorites. props to KG and Iggy

  42. Phx_son says:

Grant Hilll needs some attention.. He has held KD, Melo to low shooting percentages all season.. He makes Kobe work for his shot…

    • prix says:

totally agree…even if he wont win but he should be included in the conversation…just fair!

  43. mr13a says:

lindiblegrahible, I guess you’re not happy enough with your homeboy Derrick Rose stealing the MVP award so you want a DPOY as well? What next.. a championship? HA.

  44. Mark says:

Andrew Bogut. Fundamentally positions himself and anticipates as well as Tim Duncan and leads the league in blocked shots. Similar to Dwight Howard he has that intangible ability to make most players too timid to attempt a lay-up because of that shot blocking ‘presence’. Also if you watch a Bucks game when he’s on the bench watch the other team score quite frequently on the interior and if they miss they quite often get the offensive rebound. That seldom happens when Bogut is on the court.

    • OKCKD35 says:

If you check BPG yes he is # 1, But if you check blocker per 48 minutes its my boy Serge Ibaka, been coming off the bench almost all year and has more bloakc than anyone in the NBA, Hands down Ibaka is a better defender than Bogut, just wait Ibaka is only noe becoming a starter, wait to see what he does with 30+ minutes per game

  45. Jake says:

Good questions although I think a lot of people feel that Noah is the defensive backbone of Chicago. Brewer, Rose, and Bogans are good perimeter defenders as well.

    • QuestionMark says:

Noah is a good defender, but like MVPs and Scoring titles, one must play enough games to qualify, Noah missed what like 30 games, he is a good defender, but shouldn’t be considered because of all those missed games, its not fair to others like Dwight who played like 70+ games so far.

  46. lindiblegrahible says:

    Q. Who is the best defensive team in the nba now boston has shipped perkins?
    A. Chicago.
    Q. Who is the best individual and team defender on that team?
    A. Luol Deng..
    Q. Will he be voted the best defender in the league?
    A. Absolutely no chance.
    Q. Will he be on the all nba defensive team?
    A. Almost certainly not (maybe 3rd all nba as a thrown bone).
    Q. Is this fair?
    A. …

    • MiamiHeat says:

luol also is arguably the best defender some people might think it is rose and it is because chicago has an all around defense when orlando only has one good defensive player

    • celtic says:

he wont get the award because…
it doesnt matter that chicago is number one in the east according to the standings
it doesnt matter that he’s a great defender if he’s not the best. dyop is for THE BEST defender.
if he’s not one of the top five defenders, why does he deserve an All-defensive award? there are other candidates who fit that position more than him…
KG, Howard, Kobe, Sefo, Rondo. best defenders.

      • RIOT says:

KG should not be in the conversation..this year he shows nothing, only flops and dirty play, and his minutes is less ,he became slow and weak, only taking jum shots.. I agree with Rondo, he’s a great defensive point guard, Dwade and Grant Hill also should be in the conversation.. but at the end no doubt HOWARD will win it…

      • The Rocker says:

Garnett is the best defensive power-forward although sometimes he does some hard fouls , he is still a real tough guy

    • Wow.. says:

since they shipped out perk ru kidding me man perk played what.. 7 games or so? give us celtic fans a break from responding to dumb comments like yours
boston was the best defensive team in the league without perk for the most of the season, now that perk has gone to OKC, look at the numbers, celtics still the best..? i think so
deng is a solid player and underrated but just because hes the best defender on a good defensive team doesnt make him the best defender in the league
BOSTON MISSES PERK, GOODLUCK BIG GUY
      all about 18

      • meow says:

did u just call the bulls a good defensive team? no sorry, they’re a great defensive team…

    • prix says:

you’re crazy! Howard will win DPOY and Rose for MVP maybe Lowry or Hump or Gortat for MIP…stop the conversation!

    • No its not fair, but really, when is the media fair to Chicago? The Cinderella team of the year, figured to be anywhere from 4th seed, to 6th seed by most pundits before the season, now running the East, and with a good shot at taking the best record in the league from the foundering Spurs. Do they get media attention? Take a good look at the NBA.com website, try to find me a story about the bulls by any of the writers who work for the NBA. David Aldridge (sorry if spelling is mangled) has completely ignored them in his weekly column, and not given them a single nod for team of the week. Lu has been widely ignored for most of his career, and due to injuries, thats understandable. But cmon, if this was the NFL, everyone would be singing the Bulls’ praises, and calling them the come-out-of-nowhere feel good story of the year. I hate to call it a conspiracy, but really, since Jordan and Pip dominated the league for a decade, it just seems to me like the media is holding a grudge. Sekou, I know your a Grizz man, but c’mon, give the Bullies credit for what they’ve managed to do this season!

      • scott says:

you had 10 years of the media fawning ove MJ. Then no one in the media will talk about MJ’s 18 month suspension.

      • OKCKD35 says:

all i been hearing this year is the bulls, what the heck are you talking about? Derrick Rose is gonna win the MVP with Mere pedestrian numbers, how is this guy not getting meida attention, (if D-Rose is getting attention so are the bulls) Quit crying its their first good year since MJ

    • Jesse says:

you are dumb. Dwight Howard should win this no question. He has 1.3 steals per game, 2.4 blocks per game, and 14.2 rebounds per game. when was the last time a big man got 1.3 steals per game? He is top 20 in the league in steals and plays center! He crashes the boards, alters and blocks shots, and gets steals. Luol Deng will not get defensive player of the year. that is a laugh. dude Dwight Howard as a big man gets more steals than luol deng. deng has 1.0 spg. They have the best team defense. luol deng is not top 5 best defenders in the league. he a good defender but no where near defensive player of the year. I would not be surprised if Dwight Howard won the award 5 times in a row.

    • media head says:

the fact that lebron doesnt get mentioned in the dpoy talks is just stupid, and someone actually is saying dwade should be considered, these dwade fans blow my mind, dude is a liability on d, just cause he blocks shots, thats not his role, he gets taken to the rack just as much as he takes it to the rack, he plays bully ball to make up for the fact he has slow feet and falls asleep on d just as kendrick perkins recently pointed out, open your eyes people, lbj is the best perimiter defender in the league by far and dude is 6’8″ 250

      • Think About it Please says:

LBJ is a good perimeter defender, but is not the best, not even close. D-wade IS better than LBJ on the perimeter, your just a LBJ fanboy.

      • OKCKD35 says:

Lebron is not a defensive player of the year quality, there are sooo many better defenders, did you see what KD did to Laqueen last time they player, James couldnt guard crap on the perimeter and got lit up on 10-15 shooting when he was guarding Durant, he cannot defend a jab step from a real scorer, if it were my choice i would go with (dwight howard, Thabo Sefolosha, even Grant Hill before i would take LaQueen)

    • Dwight Howard says:

I’m a defensive beast! I’m gonna snap up the MVP award as well Bitches.

      • Rose4preisdent123 says:

No way is Luol winning defensive player of the year. He’s pretty good, but not THAT great. if a Bull wins it it’ll be Joakim Noah or Taj Gibson. Dwight should definatewly win it, Grant Hill should be in the conversation, Kobe should NOT AT ALL. Kobe is a slightly above average defender, but by no means is he all-nba quality. Lebron is a joke, all he does is chase down blocks, if you want proof of Lebron and Wade’s defense, rewatch the latest Bulls v Heat game when Rose schooled them both. I mean, no one can stop Rose so that’s hardly fair, but a DPOY doesn’t get kicked around for 48 minutes like that. Dwight, on the other hand, has nearly taken Rose’s life twice. So you gotta say Dwight

    • chris says:

the best individual defender is ronnie brewer, not luol.. when ronnies in there hes defending the kobes and the wades.. not luol.. luol shouldnt be in this conversation of DPOY at all

      • chris says:

and by best individual defender i mean for the bulls, not in the league..

dwight for DPOY, if were talking best perimeter defender you have to look at thabo, the guy is an nba starter on a playoff team and hes terrible on offense so the only way hes in there is if hes locking people down.

    • think says:

Its just funny how you missed that Tom Thibodeu was Boston’s Defensive Coach before getting his job in Chicago… I guess that makes more sense why the Bull’s are a great defensive team right now.

    • Vlad says:

and the A is : yes it is fair……being the best defensive team (if they really are) does not mean you need to have the best defender. Especially with Tom Thibs as coach, who is well known for his inspireing TEAM defence and defesive SYSTEM. That is their strenght. While Luol Deng is a great defensive player, he is not the defensive player of the year caliber like Howard and he is not a better defensive player than LeBron James at SF.

Coach Thibs deserves defensive player of the year more that any othe member of that team :P.

And, If we follow your theory, Derick Rose should not even be MVP.
Q: Who is the best team?
      A: Spurs
Q: Who will be voted MVP?
A: not Tim Duncan, not Manu, not Tony Parker.
