Poetry In Motion

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — The 2011 Sprite Slam Dunk Contest ranks as one of the NBA’s most unusual ever and certainly one of the best, top to bottom, in years.

We get to relive it now in this wicked mini-movie, Poetry In Motion, that showcases every single dunk of the contest:

  1. WTF says:

The dunk contest is a contest based on how good the dunks look and how cool they are. That is what the judges look for and that is what this contest is. Sure a difficult dunk will look cooler and be a more crowd pleasing dunk but in the end the dunk contest is what pleases the crowd and if you can find a way to do that in the dunk contest and make your dunk look good than you deserve to win. The way someone delivers a dunk is just as important as the dunk itself and that holds true completely in blakes dunks. If you go back and look at a lot of Michael Jordan dunks they were not spectacular at all but it was the smoothness in which he floated and delivered the dunks that made them truly unique and gave him a special style and Blake has that in the power in which he delivers his dunks. Either way though a lot of the comparisons people make here about how McGee’s dunks are a lot harder and stuff like that are kind of ridiculous because if you go back and look at all of McGee’s dunks he did dunks that only he could do because of his freakish wingspan. Any normal person could not do those dunks so should he win by default? Maybe if we go off of his first round performance but his second round dunks were super lame. I do agree though that Derozan had some pretty cool looking dunks but even comparing Blakes second dunk to Derozans first, Blakes just looked better so it got a better score. 2 points sure seems like a lot in a dunk contest that is decided by so little but its a score out of 50 so it is not really a huge amount at all. The fact is a dunk contest is about the way the dunk looks and Blake delivers better looking dunks through the power and body control behind it. I will admit that the Kia dunk was really lame but Javale McGee’s last dunk was horrible and almost any NBA that can dunk could do that one and his second to last one was only possible because of his long arms, maybe Kevin Durant could do that dunk but really it did not show anything really special besides how long his arms are and how far they can reach back. His first dunk was amazing but his second dunk just did not look cool at all. If you were to go and tell someone who had not seen the dunk contest that McGee dunked 3 balls in one jump it sounds incredible but when I saw it I was not really impressed at all by it purely just because of how dumb it looked. The idea itself was impressive but what it looked like was not and that in the end is really what matters.

  2. Droseno1 says:

    Best dunker today:
    Derozan
    Drose
    Igoudala

  3. rondo says:

alright you cant say derozn or serge shoulda won, they need 2 more dunks to finish a dunk contest, javale should have won this oone

  4. NEAL says:

It’s All About Entertaining Demar! Better Luck Next time. NBA where entertainment happens. 🙂

  5. GRIFFIN SUCKS says:

What a commercially made competition!!!!!Kia Commercial starring Blake Griffin!!!!Any of the three shouldve won not that stupid ordinary KIA CAR DUNK…

  6. awesomeman says:

blake griffin got his batch of haters now.

  7. Austin A. says:

Blake shouldn’t have made it out of the first round, and most definitely shouldn’t have won it.

  8. jero says:

dmar was not rob, i believe that demar is the best dunker among the contestants but all star week end is all about entertainment..whick demar currenlty lacks off.. sorry demar your BORING to watch.. you dont have the power, the facial expressions and most off all the star quality..

    • raptorrobbery says:

you cant say a guy who brings creativity an incredicle athleticism and skill is boring. and you dont have much of a point when the winner has no no facial expressions either… and boring is doing dunks that have been done a million times before like windmills off the backboard and dunks that EVERYBODY IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE can do like 360 dunks

  9. big mac says:

Javale McGee should just join a circus …
to be honest, i wasnt entertained by him doing a dunk with three balls .
I dont know about you guys, but thats MY opinion .

anyways, BG had to win, everyone hyped it up before the contest …

  10. jero says:

i like demar he is a really good dunker, but all star week end is all about entertainment..which demar lacks.. his BORING to watch.. no power, no facial expression and most of all no star quality..sorry demar although i know his the best dunker among the contestants.

  11. jero says:

demar is a good dunker but he has no sence of showmanship, all star week end is all about entertainment.. which demar lacks off, he may be the best dunker among them(personnaly for me) but his BORING to watch…no power, no facial expression and most of all no star quality..

  12. chris says:

That was embarassing for the NBA…. a lame sponsored car dunk…. COME ON!!! Blake’s amazing, but that was so painfull and frustrating to watch… Demar was robbed and its obvious. Birthday cake, kryptonite, car dunks….. are an embarassment…

  13. Mike D says:

It was quite obvious that all Griffin had to do was make it to the 2nd round where he was a shoo-in due to the ‘text the winner’ format. Great, atheletic, prop-free dunks are wasted on what is really just a popularity contest. Screw the texting and let the professionals sort this one out. And to Demar. Keep on doin’ what your doin’. AWESOME!!!

  14. Derobbed Derozan says:

HAHAHAHAHA, i love it how they didnt show derozan’s 1st dunk. Clearly everyone knows he got robbed. His 1st dunk was wayy better than all of griffen’s dunks. It is really sad that the NBA has gone to this level.

  15. rfgb says:

Derozan is pure talent. Griffiin is pure props

  16. SDRAY DONZ says:

BLAKE AND DEROZAN SHOULD HAVE A DUNK OFF FOR THE TITLE

  17. Mr. WADE says:

I DON’T WANT TO WATCH NBA slam dunk no more if with props.. no more votes to people it can be fabricated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! please!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no stupid props!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats why mr.props griffin won.

  18. mr.hype man says:

OVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVERATED DUNK by the hypeman griffin.. Kenny Smith sucks!!!!!!!

  19. area51604 says:

i was routing for ibaka and mcgee but that derozan kid by far had the 2 best dunks of the competition. i was stunned when he recieved a 44 for his first dunk, a between the legs alley oop coming from behind the backboard! are you kidding me! that was an easy 50. it’s pretty sad just because of blake griffins popularity that he won the event. and its even more sad when kenny smith was bashing the other guys for using props but then on blakes last dunk he brings out a choir and car???? can you say rigged. in my opinion blake griffin should of came in last…

  20. rfgb says:

balake is over rated in every way. John Wall is the rookie of the year, Besides Blake isn’t really a rookie, he has had a year of nba experience.

  21. Eman says:

I think Blake Can try his first dunk Windmill 360 he have 2 minutes to made it and he was without power In his last attempt maded. He need to try it again last year and that will be his better signature dunk. Kenny please talk with him and recomend to practice his firts 360 windmill attempt dunk. And please upload his first try in slow motion PLEASE Sekou!!!

  22. DD got robbed says:

If demar got into the finals (which he should’ve) everyone would have got to see some really good dunks from derozan but judges gave him a 44 on his first dunk which was better than most of the dunks. I agree with derozan NO PROPS!

  23. nbafan says:

did anyone notice baron davis after blake griffins car dunk.. he went insane inside the car LOL

  24. Maine77 says:

I thought I was crazy when I said to my friends the contest was rigged for Blake…Its sad when contest are marketing tools like this one was….Arm in the rim, jumping over a lil Kia..come on…..Bring the trophy back and you and Kenny and the ppl behind the scene aplogise to the NBA fans around the world.

  25. rfgb says:

blake is over rated. take away the car and the choir and it was an ordinary dunk, deroazan or javale were way better

  26. arno says:

    3 ball dunk?

  27. Gio. Liberatore says:

Props suck, they overshadow how much talent the competitor actually has. That is why Derozan should have won just because of his raw talent and athleticism. He would of put on a show in the finals, But as usual, the NBA is rigged. Such a joke sports league.

  28. Joey3 says:

I agree with @rigged, @bballwiz hop off Blake’s piper for awhile. What do you mean DeRozan had no “wow” factor or that he didn’t seem interested. If you watched the contest, you would see that DeRozan was very much interested

  29. Joey3 says:

DeRozan had it all, difficulty, creativity, and awesomeness…Blakes dunks were…eh Blakes’s dunks

  30. AlwaysKobe says:

Just the choir, the Kia, and this man became the champion? This was the worst dunk in the contest this year. It just wanted to make the NBA fans to vote him. What is the car and the choir for? How about DeRozan windmill dunk, Javale 2 nets, 3 balls dunk and Ibaka freethrow line dunk? I think DeRozan should make into the final with Javale, DeRozan first dunk is surely better than Griffin second dunk, but why DeRozan’s dunk is 44 and Griffin’s dunk is 46, I don’t know what happens in the NBA, but DeRozan should makes into the final and be the champion. How about DeRozan makes into the final and does a crazy dunk or Javale does another very interesting dunk in his second dunk in the final? It surely can win the Griffin’s car dunk. In this year contest, I only like Ibaka’s air, Javale’s creative and DeRozan dunk skills, Griffin just very sucks in this year contest. DeRozan windmill dunk is the best dunk since Dwight Howard, Vince Carter and Michael Jordan.

  31. rigged says:

    @bballwiz
stop sucking griffin’s nuts. HIs dunks may be powerful but they are boring and have no creativity whatsoever. This contest is about being creative and executing a difficult dunk. Jumping over a car is not impressive when any one of the other dunkers in the contest could have easily done it. Blake is being overhyped to the point where simple alley oop dunks become plays of the day every day he plays. Yeah he’s one of the top in game dunkers for sure, and he’s exciting to watch, but he should not have won this year’s contest, Derozan should have.

  32. KoBeTheBest says:

NBA sucks.!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats it,, its not about the dunkers now a days,,. its about the MONEY they can get(yes, the money they can get)!!! i would not be shocked if 10 years from now the NBA Champions will be the one who will Bring more money to the NBA..!!!!!!!!!!!!! really hate that DUNK CONTEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. piercefan says:

This year’s dunk contest was outrageous. DeMar DeRozan cleary should’ve won. A dunk contest should’t have props involved, it should be the dunker or someone to assist them during their dunk. But, jumping over a car? 2 nets? 3 balls? Entertainment should stay in the WWE and not the NBA. Blake Griffin is an amazing athlete but he was “overhyped” and shouldn’t have won the contest. DeMar DeRozan should’ve been champion.

  34. Chris says:

    This dunk contest is rigged…
Derozen has been robbed twice now, I’m almost positive that if he went to the finals he would have done a crazy dunk, not just jumping over a car, save that for the commericals Blake. Don’t get me wrong, Blake is a monster in-game but the degree of difficulty compared to Demars wasn’t there.

Is it just a coincidence that Demar lost to Nate by 1%?

    • awesomeman says:

its not rigged its fans who vote for the player they like the most, not the best dunk performance.

      DD should have won.

  35. yeboi says:

I dont know about u guys but Demar’s reverse windmill dunk is best dunk Ive seen in dunk contest since Vince Carter and Jrich was in dunk contest.

  36. milo says:

    i love rabbits

  37. Jake says:

Demar Derozen was clearly robbed of the title for the 2nd straight year.

  38. bballwiz says:

DeRozan doesn’t have the “wow” factor in his dunks. Sure, he’s really good, and jumps higher than Blake, and he’s very creative with his dunks. But that’s about it. I’ve watched his slow-mo dunk and I was like, “Is he even interested on putting on a show?” He doesn’t have any facial reaction after a spectacular dunk. It seemed like he was bored while doing it. He’s got to remember that he’s participating in an All-star event. He’s not in the gym alone. People are looking for that “oomph” effect before, during and after the dunk. He didn’t have that.

    That’s why Blake Griffin won.

Why don’t you join the contest next year, LeBron James? Show Blake how a dunk should be done. Or are you too scared to be outdone by a rookie?

Stars today just don’t have the balls anymore to compete mano-y-mano. They should not back down to any challenge. It’ll be really fun to have superstars battle it out in the dunk contest like in the 80′s (the Jordan-Dominique showdown), not role players trying to be like stars. Let’s have real showmen put on a great show for the fans. Who would wanna witness another bench warmer like Gerald Green in 2007, or Fred Jones in 2004, win a dunk contest?

Why not have the LeBron-Griffin dunk-a-thon? That should really bring back the lost hype.

    • raptorrobbery says:

If you would rather see blake miss a dunk or do something already done a million times before then why even have the dunk contest? why not just have a vote for the fans to determine who is the most popular dunker at the time? that way competitors like derozan won’t have to waste their time coming up with new creative ideas relying on true DUNKing ability that wow all of the fans only to be robbed because the NBA wants to hold their KIA sponsership and people like you crown the winner based on hype. also, blake has the worst post dunk routine ever. he makes an ugly face and just walks around like a slow gorilla. derozan went to fans and started giving them high fives pumping up the crowd and celebrating. you keep posting the same stupid arguments that have no truth to them at all. just stop

  39. bballwiz says:

9 out of 10 people will say that Blake Griffin is the best dunker in the NBA. (Objections, anyone?) But I have to say that he’s not very creative with the dunks that he made during the competition. I guess he shouldn’t have won the contest based on the acts he did. (Based on pure dunking and creativity, Derozan should have won.) But among the competitors, he’s the only one that exudes an aura that consumes everyone watching him. It’s like, every time he touches the ball, people are all eyes on him, waiting for something to happen. Even his missed dunks were exciting. So what would you rather watch, Griifin missing what could have a very powerful dunk, or an Ibaka throwdown?

All-star weekend is about stars, not role players doing their stuff they’re good at. Would you rather see a poker-faced Derozan cradle the ball, or Ibaka awkwardly strutting his stuff out on the court, or McGee, whom I think was very good, nervously holding the ball while attempting a dunk?

Or would you rather see a Blake Griffin dunk? It may be a simple dunk, it may not be very creative, but he’ll have my vote every time just to watch him abuse the rim with another powerful slam. He may do something that has been done before by so many great dunkers, but his version will always be spectacular. Why? Because he’s Blake Griffin.

And that’s what stars do during All-star weekend: show up and leave a long-lasting image on fans.

    • c1 says:

The “dunk” contest is called a “dunk” contest and not a emo contest for a reson. If i wanted to watch some guy being pissed off and that “oooommmphhh” factor, i’d go watch wwe or american idol or something. Its like saying 3 point contest is not about draining 3s but to watch that beautiful shooting stroke (although he misses, if you will). Not to mention, the only long-lasting image on fans that was left on that night was that it was rigged and DD got robbed.

  40. Kyle_G says:

Video just annoys me now. Demar was robbed, give the Raptors 1 break! jesus..

    • bballwiz says:

DeRozan doesn’t have the “wow” factor in his dunks. Sure, he’s really good, and jumps higher than Blake, and he’s very creative with his dunks. But that’s about it. 41. sinkshot72 says:

absolutely agree with next to no props beyond costume (if wanna dress up, go for it!) kind of thing.

demar is by far the clear winner! who knows what he might have pulled out in the finals!!!

the degree of difficulty and the attempt number coupled with crowd response and judges, well… it did seem they were following a bit of a script this year, didn’t they!? tough… hopefully they got a sweet pay out for their time!… something that acknowledges their true worth to the history of the game… brilliant players, all of them! wow…

    • sinkshot72 says:

but yeah… demar clear winner… javale was fantastic… though struggled with the multiple attempts a bit…. blake has got something… needs more imagination an increase in difficulty!!! just my opinion! serge was great also! silly time sucking second dunk with the reset of the stuffed animal… the whole premise… hired kid talent… yadda yadda… 5 seconds turned 3 minutes!

  42. Yvette says:

Dunk contest nowadays is ALL PROPS and NO HOPS!

  43. polo says:

OVERRATED DUNK””STRONG AGREE”””. I don’t understand how Derozan got 44 on his first dunk and Griffen got more than Derozan ?
Derozan is the best dunker than Griffen.

  44. jan michael says:

derozan should have qualified in the final round ..

  45. timdonaghy says:

    Nba = wwe
dunk contest = marketing tool + avenue for sponsorship

Demar Derozan >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Blake Griffin as a dunker

    Kia Won , NBA lost.

If NBA wants to justify itself, it will invite Demar to the dunk contest next year again.
If Demar has any self respect, he will not participate :D.

    what a circus…

  46. derozan fan says:

i just don’t understand how derozan got 44 on his first dunk and griffen got 46 on his second dunk. Derozan got the ball bounce behind the net and he put it through his legs oppose to griffen get it from the side of the backboard and windmilling it. Derozan’s first dunk was definitely should of got higher than griffen’s second dunk

  47. LB6 says:

    All props dunk sucks

  48. SeanA23 says:

Slow down on the food smithy

  49. KEEEEEEENY fu says:

KENNY SMITH sucks stand up people,, if i know that griffins dunk sucks i wouldn’t even bother to stood,,i hate griffin

  50. MonK3y says:

I didn’t like this dunk contest (as much as I expected to) and agree with DeRozan’s point of view…

  51. ashley says:

griffin already won even the slamdunk contest started..fabricated… very simple final dunk .. griffins sucks

  52. Joey3 says:

    rigged something serious

  53. Adel Hanna says:

Did anyone notice that the dunk griffin did.. off the side of the backboard.. was the exact same same dunk derozan did in last year’s dunk contest

  54. Alex O'Rourke says:

DeRozan should have won that contest. Blake Griffin is so overhyped it isn’t even funny.

    • bballwiz says:

DeRozan doesn’t have the “wow” factor in his dunks. Sure, he’s really good, and jumps higher than Blake, and he’s very creative with his dunks. But that’s about it. That’s why Blake Griffin won.

      • nbafan says:

you keep saying this, but you do realize your arguement is totally invalid. blake griffin has one of the ugliest finishes on his dunks, his head gets to close to the rim and he ends up making some weird face. if you’re saying griffin has better showmanship than derozan you must be referring to griffin’s use of props. the car is essentially what made griffin win. derozan showcased pure dunking ability. the rest of them brought props, their mothers, a stuffed toy to excite the crowd, i honestly dont think that thats what a DUNK contest should be about.

“he’s really good, and jumps higher than Blake, and he’s very creative with his dunks.” thats exactly what should win a dunk contest…

      • awesomeman says:

Its a dunk contest, not a beauty pageant.

  55. HAHA says:

Where is Demar’s first dunk? that was way better than all the dunks Blake did… SMH

  56. babycry14 says:

    What about derozan’s first dunk

  57. Vesper says:

That. Was. Awesome. I wish they did a slow-mo of Blake’s first missed dunk. It was the highlight of the night. I fell out of my chair.

  58. Lebron James says:

Wow…..Blake shoudn’t have won…his dunks were so simple, Serge Ibaka or Derozan should’ve won.

    • Get Over it says:

      Seriously…

    • QuestionMark says:

Ibaka shouldnt have won, either Mcgee or Derozan should have won, Griffins best dunk was the 360, his car dunk is nothing.

    • bballwiz says:

DeRozan doesn’t have the “wow” factor in his dunks. Sure, he’s really good, and jumps higher than Blake, and he’s very creative with his dunks. But that’s about it. • Michael S says:

With all due respect Griffins a stone-faced competitor so you can’t really use that argument.
Why is everyone talking about Derozan, granted i feel that he should have went through but to be honest any of the 2 dunkers could have gone through, considering the high quality of the 1st and 2nd round. Honestly i feel McGee should have won based on his 3rd dunk, it was awesome

      • Taylor says:

Seriously? Blake Griffin is known all across the country for his lack expression shown after a dunk. “Sure, he’s really good, and jumps higher than Blake, and he’s very creative with his dunks. But that’s about it.”. This is a dunk contest. You are basically saying he is a better dunker, just not as good at acting. Yes, I feel as if there should be some entertainment as well but the judges should base their scores on one thing, and one thing alone. The dunk. Not the hype of the player going into the contest.

  59. Jordan says:

    Where is Derozan’s first dunk?

  60. 27_Jan says:

yeah, first derozan dunk is missing… gues it would have made it to obvious that he should have made it to to the final!!!

  61. rfgb says:

Javale or derozan should have won!

  62. Sekou Smith says:

wheres Demar’s fist dunk…and McGee’s three ball one?…DD should have made it to the finals with McGee…everyone knows it was rigged for blake griffin to win cuz KIA needed their car to be shown as they are paying the NBA to get some air time

    • Shifty15 says:

Yeah, everyone knows that’s exactly why… Wanker.

    • i agree. if McGee got a 50 on, what, 8 tries on the 2ball dunk DeRozan should have had a 50 on his first giving him a perfect 100 and Blake would not have been in the finals. And further more, Blakes second dunk was in no way better then Derozans first, but it got a better score. totally ripped. I love Blake he´s among the best dunkers of all time , but before anyone labels him the best in-game dunker ever, check out a young Vinsanity. it really does´nt get better then that. as far as best dunk contest i´ll take 2000 when Vince did´nt miss any of his never-seen-before slams, in what i would deem the best performance ever in the history of the contest. As far as the best contest ever, not performance. i´ll pick 2003 when J-Rich won it on the last dunk. check it out if possible. you won´t be disappointed.

    • hasib says:
