Jennings grounded from Dunk Contest

MILWAUKEE — Brandon Jennings, the Milwaukee Bucks point guard who has missed 14 games with a fractured fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot, has withdrawn as a contestant in the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest at All-Star Weekend, NBA.com has learned.

While Jennings is on track to return to the Bucks’ lineup within the next two weeks, the  risk of re-injury while practicing for and participating in the dunk contest apparently caused the player and the Bucks to reconsider his involvement, sources said. A league spokesman declined to comment Wednesday and information on Jennings’ likely replacement could not be confirmed.

However, the NBA announced Thursday morning that Toronto’s DeMar DeRozan – the runner-up in last year’s Sprite Slam Dunk Contest — will replace Jennings this year in Los Angeles. (Watch TNT tonight at 8 p.m. ET for full coverage of the announcement.)

Jennings, 21, hurt his foot against in an awkward spill at San Antonio on Dec. 15 and struggled to play on it three nights later against Utah. The second-year guard had surgery on Dec. 20, with an expected layoff of four to six weeks. The Bucks, 10-15 when Jennings went down, are 5-9 since.

Jennings said Wednesday after the Bucks’ shootaround that he hopes to return by the end of the month, when the Bucks head to his native southern California to face the L.A. Clippers at the start of a three-game trip. “I’m hoping before we hit L.A. on the 31st,” he said. “So I’m hoping before then. Next week or so, get a couple games in before I leave.”

The Bucks face Atlanta at home on Wednesday, play at Toronto on Jan. 28, then have the Nets at Bradley Center on Jan. 29. In 25 appearances, Jennings averaged 18.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.6 assists while shooting 39.1 percent.

From the start, Jennings was an improbable choice to compete in the Slam Dunk event on Feb. 19 at All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles. He was the lone guard selected in the field of four that includes the Clippers’ Blake Griffin, Oklahoma City’s Serge Ibaka and Washington’s JaVale McGee. Also, he hardly is known as a dunker.

“I don’t sell Brandon short but I believe he has two dunks and Blake has 96 or something,” Bucks coach Scott Skiles said recently. “I don’t know how those decisions are made. … I have seen Brandon alone in a gym do some dunks that are pretty impressive. Small guys tend to get more accolades in those things anyway.”

Skiles had said that he was fine with Jennings competing, if healthy. But with the Bucks beset with injuries this season and stalled in 10th place in the Eastern Conference standings, losing their point guard to another layoff – thanks to an exhibition event – would be a tough sell to Milwaukee fans.

Jennings, who stayed on the court for extra shooting ut has avoided any running or cutting on the court, did not address his participation directly Wednesday morning. But he did not sound that enthused. “It’s an honor but it’s not a thing that’s really mandatory for me right now,” Jennings said. “Mandatory for me is trying to get back on the court and help the team. So that’s my No. 1 priority.”

Demar Derozan should of won the sprite slam dunk last year, but he didn’t win i think he deserves it since he posterized jordans “BOBCATS”.

  2. #LETJOSHDUNK says:

Get Josh McRoberts in the dunk contest.

He’s an incredible dunk artist that actually wants to be there.

And he has just as much showmanship, if not more, than the rest of these guys – including Griffin (see video and website JoshCantDunk.com).

What is the NBA thinking? COME ON!

  3. LeBron says:

2 years before James did a dunk in all star game ending to make everyone believe he will be in the dunk contest last year ! Last year LeBron was watching the dunk contest once upon! This year story repeats once again! Why don’t you pute LeBron on the dunk contest? Is it a one way he is winning and everyone fears him or what?

And one more question? Why Nate isn’t in the slam dunk contest as a champion who has to defend his title?

  4. Nicholas says:

These should have been the dunk contestants
    1. Blake Griffin
    2. Derrick Rose
    3. Serge Ibaka
    4. Rudy Gay

  5. linebacker0000 says:

Hey whynotlebron, be for real. There’s no referees in the Slam Dunk Contest to call a foul! Lebron is the one who said that he was going to compete in Slam Dunk Contest last year; but then he changed his mind when he found out Shannon Brown was the favorite to win.

  6. Tom says:

For what tis worth, next year id like to see an all guards dunk contest, 6’4 and under. Fighting for places would be Westbrook, Rose, Wade, Brown and potentially Ellis, Rondo, Jennings, D-Will or even Baron Davis etc. I’d say Harden too but i think he’s 6’5.

Follow the guards with an all PF’s/Centres contest. Griffin, McRoberts, Howard, McGee and potentially Ibaka, Bosh, Jordan, Stoudemire etc. Will never happen but would be interesting.

I am a HUGE fan of the dunking field this year now. Wasn’t happy with Jennings beng in although he can dunk pretty well (Have seen him do a between the egs dunk with ‘relative’ ease). Now DeRozan is in, im very happy with the field. Javale has geat hops for a 7 footer and with his HUGE wingspan and length he might be able to pull off some pretty innovative dunks. I liked his ‘windmill from a standing start’ and his ‘biting the paper from the net dunks’ in preparation for the comp.

Ibaka is now the biggest dark horse but in the Spanish slam dunk contest he dunked from the free throw line so he WILL surprise. BLAKE IS BLAKE…..and now Derozan, he can flat out jump too. Good field. Would have loved to have seen Rose, Westbrook or JR (altho hes had his chances) in the contest but the 4 now im very happy with. Still cant workout the Jennings choice tbh when if they wanted a PG, Rose or Westbrook would have been much better choices from what ive seen, And lets face it, if Jennings was picked mainly for underdog factor, well anyone is an underdog compared to Griffin.

Anyway, glad how things have worked out in the end, DeRozan is a good choice.

  8. IWantARealSlamDunkContest2011 says:

blake griffin vs lebron james vs shannon brown vs derrick rose vs dwight howard thats 5 players add a 6th (demar derozen) and then its a real DUNK CONTEST!!not what you got it.mgee?ibaka?crap everybody knows they cant do anything spectacular.and if i got to pick a 7th id pick dwayne wade or carmelo.make it the best possible dunk contest.see NBA and all of youfans have no taste or style.my list is the best dunk contest concievable or possible.but it will never happen bc the people who work for NBA.com and organize these events for All Star weekend are stupid or dumb or cant read words and wont make it happen.go learn what the fans really want to see.NBa SUCKS!i wont be watching again this year. :)

    • linebacker0000 says:

yeah I agree with you; however; I would rather see Andre Iguodala instead of seeing Dwight Howard do his “comical” dunks.

  9. JC14 says:

How bout LeBron joining the dunk contest?

  10. Raps Fan says:

    Derozen deserves to be there.

LAST YEAR DUNK COMP SUCKED ASS,++++ F’in monkey robinson won cause of his fans, what a fixed evet.

all i am saying is, i dont care who you put in the dunk comp, just make it entertaining and worth me not doing some homework that day.

    • linebacker0000 says:

Yeah Robinson same ol same. Just because he was the shortest in the competion, judges gave him higher scores. I’ve seen guys in the neighborhood doing that same dunk while playing Horse!

  11. john says:

Put DURANT in there! lol. KD is the most ungracious dunker of all times. haha!

    LBJ show up!

Blake vs DeRozan in the finals. yeah!

    • linebacker0000 says:

KD is a one dimentional dunker with no upper body strength. However, I feel Shannon Brown was nervous on the big stage last year and I was hoping he would re-enter Slam dunk Contest this year to redeem himself. It would be good: Shannon vs Blake

  12. BobCattty says:

For all of you who don’t think derozan should be in the dunk contest your wack … when it comes to athleticism and dunking ability derozan is one of the best in the league … the nba got it right on this one

JORDAN , WILKINS, ERVING, KEMP, CARTER , MC GRADY, RICHARDSON, WALKER, PIPPEN, WEBB, STARKS, NO FEAR DUNKERS

  14. JMoon says:

I think DeRozan is a good replacement. I honestly don’t know how Jennings got into the contest. DeRozan’s dunks were better than Nate’s last year. Nate just won cuz everyone wanted to see the little dude win again.

All in all, last year was pretty pathetic though.

There are so many good dunkers to choose from. I think Griffin, McRoberts, J.R. Smith, Wade, LeBron, Gay are all good in-game dunkers.

Howard isn’t all that creative in games, but he comes up with some wild ones at the contest, so put him in there too.

Finally, put in D-Rose and Westbrook for their explosive ability.
Last but not least . . . Jamario Moon (highest vertical in NBA)!

  15. Shamanth says:

DEROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOZZZZZZAAAAAAN BAAAAAAABY YEAH!!!! 19. ian says:

i dont know why jenning was even in the contest to start if he barely dunks, derozen should be fun to watch even though im not a raptors fan

  20. nothingbut says:

DeMar is a great choice to replace Jennings. If not DeRozan, I would say JR Smith of the Nuggets or Iguadola of the sixers are also right up there. But there are many great dunkers in the league so its a tough choice.
Lebron and DWade are going to be in the All Star game, so I would rather see some new faces in the dunk comp.

Just like i said earlier, this is top dunkers in the NBA right now:
    01. Lebron James (best off-one leg dunker)
    02. Derrick Rose (two-legs power)
    03. Andere Iguodala (best stylish dunker)
    04. Blake Griffin (best in-game dunker)

put ‘em in the NBA slam dunk contest 2011 and you have a showtime in LA!!!!!!

    Believe me!!!! :)

  28. el Josho says:

would love to see D Wade in it

  29. highflyer says:

Yeah! Jennings isn’t even 6’1 and he’s injured too…DeRozan got cheesed last year by the stupid so called NBA fans around the world he deserved 2 win it and he wasn’t even fully fit. It’s so annoying all of these idiots around the world voting for players like A.I. & McGrady last year when tons of other players should have been considered… maybe the voting should be left 2 english speaking countries because i’m pretty sure that’d make the votes fairer… Anyway here’s a list of dunkers that should be in instead of McGee or Ibaka… no disrespect but i doubt they’re going 2 be entertaining.

    Rudy Gay
    Hakim Warrick
    Russell Westbrook
    Andre Iguodola
    Ronnie Brewer
    Derick Rose
    Tyrus Thomas
    Eric Gordon
    Terrence Williams
    Trevor Ariza
    Amare Stoudimere
    Sonny Weems

    & the number 1 contender… Brain Scalbrine

  30. LJ says:

I personally feel that the selectors got it wrong in the first place, brandon can dunk but when does he dunk often? derozan, weems and amir johnson r sick athletcally and toronto should of had at least 2 in there they have had some sick dunks through out the year, next year consider sam young, rudy gay, eric gordon, d wade, lebron, dorell wright and others theres loads of talented dunkers, y not bring back all four champs, j rich, josh smith, dwight howard and this years winner for a champion of champions

  31. bbr11 says:

    DEROZAN DE-RISING!!!

  32. MISAM says:

The only reason they dont put LeBron in, is cuz hes oviously a fan fav. Even if his dunks were awful as hell, he would still win it. LeBron is wayyyy better dunker than both Mcgee,Griffin, and Derozan. And hell i had no idea who Ibaka really was until i heard he was enterin the contest. Slam dunk this year goin 2 be borin. Why did they have to bring Mcgee and Ibaka??? Last year , lacked a superstar in the contest, thats why it wasnt that great, It was a bunch of average players. They should have put Lebron, or Wade, or even Rose would be fine.

  33. cj says:

I THINK IT WILL A BETTER CONTEST NOW CUZ JENNINGS IS A GOOD PLAYER BUT HE DOES NOT HAVE AS MUCH UPS AS DEROZEN DOES SO HE SHOULD BE ABLE TO GIVE GRIFFIN SOME GOOD COMPETISTION

One day, demar will be like VC at the 2000 dunk contest

  42. Celtics fan from Germany says:

I think its not a bad call, but i would go first with Blake, Javale and instead of Jennings and Ibaka i would choose Rose or Derozan (one guard) and JR smith or Lebron or Rudy Gay (one forward) however im still excited and will watch Blake kickin some asses^^

  45. Pat says:

Firstly, i am happy to see the first white guy (Blake) in the dunk comp that i have ever witnessed. WHITE MEN CAN JUMP!!
Secondly, why isn’t JR Smith in there?????
He is as good, if not better than Griffin. From that video, all i see LeMar doing is a one handed slam, anyone 6ft 4 plus, with a good verticle leap can do that, but JR is way more explosive, exciting and the biggest show off I’ve seen. He is bound to throw down something rediculous!!!!

  47. Sean says:

either people are ignorant or just plain unintelligent, derozan a pg? yea thats right he plays the point guard all right. THE DUDE IS A SG/SF, for anyone that thinks he stunk it up last year is because he was coming off an injury. Is it just me or wouldnt people like to see more short guards in this contesst? i mean i think it is a lot more fun to watch a shorter guard sore up in the air to dunk then guys that are 6,10 who barely have to jump to put the ball in. my kind of dunk contest would be JR Smith, D rose, derozan and then either westbrook or jennings. does anyone agree with this?

  48. Mrsims says:

For all yall naming Rose…….Have yall even thought about his thoughts on the Dunk Contest???? I haven’t read anywhere saying he was interested in it!

  49. daniel says:

  50. Andy Rijo says:

Brandon Jennings is great player but demar is a flyer … great contestant for the dunk contest !!!!!!!!!!

  51. Jovan Milojevic says:

Those players would be best for high exciting SDC : – Derrick Rose
    – Andre Iguodala
    – Lebron James
    – Blake Griffin

NBA sucks in decision who gonna contest…. They miss the guy James White who is best (NBA player) dunker in the World!!!
He will dominate them all…. Now he play in Russia tough…

  52. Jeev says:

No it was just you! DeRozan had the best dunk last year, got snubbed by the judges. He will have to step up this year but I think its given that its Blake vs. DeRozan in the final

  53. Griffin easy win says:

Yeah I watch the raptors his dunks aren’t that good that he should be in the dunk contest again… I could name atleast 10 – 15 players i’d rather see. atleast they didn’t put him in a shooting contest he can’t shoot not sure if he realizes cause he keeps attempting them. part of the reason raptors have such a bad record players need to know their role. Also need a new coach and GM for not realizing and/or enforcing it. Still can’t understand how they kept him in their starting lineup all last season he wasn’t nearly as productive and raptors missed the playoffs by half a game. If he stops shooting he could be a pretty good player but I don’t see that happening so I hope we trade him….

    • Gman says:

Says you buddy. Even guys like Kobe and Lebron have said that this guy can be something special. All one needs is practice. You talk like someone who has never played a sport. Players need to improve… How the hell will they improve if they dont attempt?

  54. thom says:

Is it just me or DeRozan was a complete clown on the dunk contest lat year?

  55. Tom says:

they probably do ask everybody like rose and lebron and they probably just respectfully decline. i mean c’mon this league is all about promotion so of course it would make sense they ask the stars first. but watch the players now, the dunk contest is a joke they don’t care who wins it.

  56. Darien says:

What happened to josh mcroberts ????????? ……

    • JMoon says:

I know. The guy is probably, after Griffin, the most dreative in-game dunker. He does two hand reverses where most people would just go straight on. I’d like to see just what he would do in the dunk contest. He could give Griffin a good run.

  63. Robin says:

Why don’t they take Rose or JR Smith? DeRozan is a good dunker, but he was there last year (I think JR was also there, but still..). Did anyone see Rose’s double clutch reverze after the Skills Challenge, two years ago? In-cre-dible. And his hops have grown ever since, look at that wicked alley-oop he did last week. He should definently be in the Dunk Contest!

I’m sorry, but this move was so obvious from the beginning…!:-) If you want to make a surprise appearence of somebody – who would you pick to withdraw him afterwards, if not Brandon J.?? Brandon Jennings HAS hops – there are nice videos on youtube proving that… But no way, he would compete in such a Contest after serious injury like he had, that would be foolish… The thing is, you put him on roster and then withdraw him three or two weeks before – because of the health issues and bring out the new big name…you cant blame Brandon, you cant blame the newcomer or anybody and the element of surprise is set – but come on NBA, we are Big Kids for such a games;-) But, well, in fact I was expecting LeBron or someone like that to show up…:-))) But anyhow this year’s Contest will be huge …so let the games begin…!;-)

Keeping also in mind that McGee and Ibaka can be Highlight machines too – it will be so close this year.
I also hope the Slam Dunk Contest won’t be that boring like the past few times (compared to the old times of course).

yeah crazy bounce… but i think hes more of an in-game dunker like shannon brown last year

    • Right.. says:

That’s a bloody good news! DeRozan deserves the spot.
And why it should be Rose? It’s not a layup contest..

    • caleb says:

you obvously dont realize that demar has as high vert. he is in the same ballpark as derrick rose for hops

  83. mark says:

why last years runner up wasn’t invited in the first place i don’t know. no offence mr jennings. btw the owner of the nets just made the best moves i’ve ever seen, congrats, your team has cash, picks, cap space, a new home soon, lopez, harris, favors, etc and hova! you don’t need the melo-drama! thats good.

  84. Spellchecker says:

    Atleast spell his name right

  85. Nic says:

Shoulda got Lebron in there instead

  86. Desi says:

DeRozen has had some mean dunks this season in the top 10 so this is a good choice. The competition doesn’t seem like such a walkover for Griffin now, no disrespect to McGee and Ibaka.

Right now Griffin still is the peoples choice so it’s kind of his to lose really (even though the judges have the scorecards).

  87. Robsta says:

First and foremost they should have taken Derrick Rose instead of Jennings or McGee, and now that Jennings is gone they should have taken Rose straight away. Don’t get me wrong, DeRozen can dunk, but i am 100% Rose would have ripped the contest apart..

  88. TheWarchild says:

we all know that this is Blake’s world. Even his first nba score is through a dunk! now javalle is pretty good too, just aint as high flying as derozan and grifin, but has power. same with ibaka. but one thing’s for sure, there will be a blake in the finals, and i think it’s gonna be a 60% winning chance :D

  89. Bartek says:

I say Derozen is a better dunker then Jennings, so its a win win for everybody. Also its going to be Griffin and Derozen in the final two. With DEROZEN winning.

  90. Emboled says:

guess now i’m gonna see what derozan has in store…. kinda bummed though, jennings probably had some pretty nice surprise haha

    • Hilliard says:

i think DeMar Derozan should replace Brandon Jennings because derozon is a batter dunkin then brandon jennings. there both good player.

    • brandon says:

ur crazy derozan smashed epic dunkers like gerald wallace and shannon brown last year… nba finally got it right putting this crazy dunker instead of jennings. Not saying jenning’s is bad but we all know derozan would murk him

    • Raven says:

wI definitely agree with you dude.
He’s one of the so many kind of players who has ridiculously astounding dunks ive ever seen men.
prove me wrong but as we all know he gives a show of highlights to us viewers almost every game he plays.

  91. #LETJOSHDUNK says:

Get this right NBA, get McBob in there!!! An all big-man dunk contest. Make it happen!!!

    • YESSSSSSSS DEROZANNNNNNNNN RAPTORS BABY!!!!!!!! I LIVE IN TORONTO AND I HAVENT BEEN THIS EXCITE SINCE VINCE CARTER !!!!!1

    • whynotlebron says:

why not lebron james….i know everyone hates him. But they really dont, thats obvious with all the votes he is getting! All we want for the ALLSTAR game is ENTERTAINMENT, and lots of it… dont deny your self this!

DERRICK ROSE, LEBRON JAMES, BLAKE GRIFFIN, MCGEE/BUDINGER/T.WILLIAMS/D.JORDAN/WESTBROOK?
