HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – An epic snowstorm that blanketed the region surrounding the hideout might have brought the world as we know it to a halt.
But it didn’t stop us from rounding up an A-list of special guests for Episode 39 of the Hang Time Podcast, which was delayed a couple of days due to inclement weather.
We kicked off the show quizzing TNT’s Steve Kerr kicks on a variety of topics, including his take on the Carmelo Anthony melodrama, what went down with Amar’e Stoudemire in Phoenix last year and his thoughts on the Miami Heat, among other things.
We followed that up with an intense session with our main man Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports, who is in Denver and shared some of his knowledge of the Anthony situation, his thoughts on the ultimate winners and losers if this mega-trade goes down and where all sides go from there and whether or not Steve Nash will be the next superstar to find himself caught up in the trade rumor mill.
We wrapped up the show with a long-awaited visit from Dave Zirin, sports editor of the Nation and a columnist, writer and provocateur who also has his own show, Edge of Sports Radio, on XM satellite radio, who shared his thoughts on a wide range of topics, including his assessment of Stoudemire as “the most important Jew in New York since Woody Allen.”

It’s looked like your guest, Dave Zirin, took a shot at the Spurs-Pistons finals of 2005. Actually, that was a good Finals and competitive. I know it wasn’t a box office draw. But everything is always about a box office draw.
I do you have to have teams with style but you also need teams with just substance as well. Both are needed and to take shots at teams like the Spurs and Pistons is just as wrong as others taking shots on teams like the Lakers, Heat or Suns (at their peak).

The Nets deal is very unlikely unless Anthony agrees to sign a contract extension ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sign_and_trade ) – which means that ‘a couple of months in Jersey’ is not a legitimate option.

Dont get too cocky about beating the LAKERS that was only regular season. Bulls still have a ways to go before the start to beat the elite teams in the playoffs….where it counts.

i think Melo and S.T.A.T. would be an interesting combo to say the least but i don’t see NYK giving up three or four of those young energetic players and picks to get Melo. No Carmelo is not the best player in the NBA. He is a top five scorer in the NBA though. Lebron is not the best player in the NBA either. Lebron is more rounded than Melo but Melo doesn’t have the ego that LBJ has either which makes for a better professional image. Melo can credit is professionalism as a result of Chauncy Billups’s leadership. As a fan of the Magic, I have to disagree about Nash coming over. Nash is by far my favorite player of all time but I respect what Nash wants for himself which is to retire in Phoenix. When he agreed to his current contract, he said he wants to retire as a member of the Suns. There is no doubt he deserves a championship but Nash has what is more important than a piece of gold to wear on his finger. He has earned significant respect from the NBA players, fans, etc. He came from a smaller school (Santa Clara) and has had an amazing NBA career. It’s a shame he couldn’t retire in Dallas w/ Dirk. But as I said before, I respect Nash and what he wants for his career. Back to the topic of Melo; I’d like to see Larry Bird land him in Indiana for Danny Granger. Indiana has a decent core group of players w/ PG-Darren Collison, C-Roy Hibbert, SG-Brandon Rush & if Tyler Hansbrough has a decent career, him at PF. They have Mike Dunleavy and TJ Ford’s expiring contracts as well and if both teams could come to terms on an agreement, you could see al harrington back in Indiana w/ Melo and some draft picks and those expiring contracts. I doubt it’d happen but it’d be nice to see Indiana w/ a decent team and a deadly scorer again which they haven’t had since Reggie Miller.

I have been looking at these trades and the possibility of Carmelo Anthony going to another team that will win a championship. The two things that he needs to do is carefully select the right team that he will mix well, get paid well and win a championship. For me New Jersey Nets won’t do it, he may get paid well but he won’t win a championship there they need much more talent than just Carmelo, it would be a one man team. The other suggestion is New York, that won’t work either. Amare Stoudemire will not be as good with another star as he is on is own, just look at his time with Phonenix. My opinion as a would be talent scount is for Carmelo to go to San Antonio. That will clinch a championship for him without any doubt, it would be a certainty. The Spurs team is more offensive now and if Carmelo could work the roster and plays of Pop, then a championship is assured. Spurs do have problems with salary cap problems but with Carmelo on the team, I think there would be two or three championships left in the Duncan era. Starting 5 would be Parker, Duncan, Jefferies, Ginobli, and Carmelo Anthony and then with the biggest bench in the business, Spurs would be unbeatable as it is now they will be highly competitive against everyone but not assured of victory against Boston, Miami or Lakers. A carmelo trade wins a title or two for sure.

if i’m the boss of the nuggets, i’d rather keep melo in denver till this season. though it would be hard to find another superstar to play in denver but at least melo will end up this summer begging to the NBA owners and GMs for contract.. they said that it is not sure if there is a “season” this fall because of the collective bargaining agreement, so, melo doesn’t have contract to play for.. yes, he is a talented player but i won’t tolerate such big-headedness and superstar-like attitude to rule in the NBA. I think Nash is s**t outta luck on winning a championship…even though i do think he deserves one. All of the contending teams are pretty much set. Magic just made a huge trade, Boston has Rondo, and the heat signing the three amigos, well they just flat out dont have the money to afford Nash. Not only that other than the three amigos, they have not one person on that team Phoenix would trade Nash for. No other team in the east is competing for a chip. Teams on the west have a better chance at trading for Nash than teams on the east. Lakers have the pieces, question is would they be willing to part with the pieces Phoenix would want, Bynum, Barnes, Blake, Artest, Fisher, even Odom! But i just dont think the LAKERS would want to part with any of these guys. So i think Nash is going to be stuck in PHX.

This “Melo Drama” is just being dragged too much. He wants to go to knicks, the team wants him goin to NJ, a new story every day…Too much attention being paid to nothing…in the end, he will end up being a villain in Denver…So either don’t drag it too far…or just keep it wrapped from the media till a decision is made…He’s a good player…so let him do what he’s good at…win games! On the other hand, I feel sorry for Steve Nash. I read an article where he clearly mentioned his dis-satisfaction with the team…Nash deserves better…he is one of the best PGs in the game for a long time now…he should probably go to a team that where his INVINCIBLE passes are well read and turned into assists for a winning score. This is a good fit because it gives New York another solid scoring option besides Amare inside and 4 guys on the court to jack up 3s. Nash is good, but not great. He hasn’t played defense since he was at Santa Clara, for starters. On top of that- I can name a bunch of guys I’d rather have as my starting PG over a guy who stole one of his MVP’s from a much better and much more complete player – Black Mamba. there had been many trades happen during the past few years. boston started it all until shaq went along with the team. this become so intriguing, fun and more exciting basketball wer all other teams are trying to define the best combinations to beat boston..an example is miami, and new york, then chicago. but its sad to know that other teams are not having fair share of best players in their teams.

Carmelo would be a good fit for the Los Angeles Clippers.
Please keep in mind, the Clippers have been doing exceptionally well, despite its reputation for being “cursed” and carrying one of the worst records each season. Blake Griffin has been showing outstanding numbers, this man is averaging a double double every night. Not only is there a big man on this squad, but Baron Davis and Eric Gordon can push the ball up and down the court. As of date, the Clippers are ranked fourth best defensive team in the NBA, and given the fact Camelo has a stronger offense than defense, there will be a lot of chemistry. If Carmelo is added to this young team, there will be a good chance the Clippers will at least be in the semi-finals in the western conference next post season.
I do not think adding another scorer onto the New York team be beneficial. Don’t get me wrong, Amar’e is an outstanding player and plays well with Raymond Felton, but adding Carmelo would not be a good fit. The Knicks are first in the league with points scored in a game, hence a strong offensive team, however ranked 20 in defense. Come on, the Nets have stronger defense than the Knicks and they’re the third poorest performance team in the league. Too many cooks in the kitchen. Though, if Carmelo is looking to become part of a playoff contending team this season Knicks would be the best option.
The Nets definitely need help with player and team development. Carmelo cannot offer much assistance in improving this team. Carmelo would only be an additional scorer, Nets need to rebuild the bench and defense, because Harris and Lopez are running the team. Derrick Favors has a lot of potential, but give the guy another couple years.
he should go and play for the lakers among side w/kobe…the lakers need a forward w/ barnes and ratliff injured..he dont have to stay for next season but spend this one with a championship ‘defenders” plus he’ll get that ring and then sign with the bucks if he want’s

With all respect for Steve Nash. But I think he had his chance. How many chances more he deserve. Years after years people been screaming that the Suns should start playing defense cause defense wins championship. But they never listen.
For me the Suns made the stupidest mistake of all time by trading Richardson after letting stoudmire go.S nash had
played all his career time with good players and good coaches. The only thing is they never played defense.
About Carmelo. he should go to NY. NY is the best fit for him. But I don’t understand why Melo wants lo leave Denver.
Denver is not a bad team. They only need a few ajustments. Imagine, Steve Nash and Melo and crew.
I don’t know if anyone would really want nash except for a below .500 team. Felton is playing great for the nicks, Orlando has a pick of nelson or arenas, the lakers don’t use a dominant point gaurd because of the triangle offense, dallas has kid, miami has a problem with to many ballhandlers as it is. As good as nash was, watchin his games I have noticed he has always been a bit of a liability on defense, Actually every team he has controlled has been a pretty terrible defensive team.
As for Carmelo? I wish he would stay with the nuggets, at least til the seasons end. They have the full side for a change and if they could play defense like they did 2 years ago, they really have a chance to push into the playoffs. I can’t say I see a bright future for him at the nets, unless they make a play for chris paul next year?
