About Last Night: ‘Melo Locks Down

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS — Carmelo Anthony got back to normal last night — on the court at least.

The trade rumors are still swirling. But ‘Melo set the record straight, to the Fan Night crew (above) and on several other topics to those who have descended upon Denver to investigate this ongoing story.

There’s nothing like hearing Anthony’s words directly. He can clear up a lot of the misconceptions about what is going on right now and basically who is running this entire affair. According to Anthony, it’s certainly not his wife, La La Vazquez, whose name has surfaced in many rumors as demanding that the Anthonys relocate to a bigger market at her behest.

As Anthony explained to my main man Yahoo! Sports Marc J. Spears, his wife is “not calling the shots” on this one (Anthony is a brave man for saying that out loud. Hope he had Wifey’s permission):

“Ya’ll put this in bold words, La La has nothing to do with anything,” Anthony said. “Whatever is my decision, she is going to support me. She has nothing to do with me staying or leaving. Nothing. So please keep her out of it. Thank you.

“People have to write about something and [they] come up with, ‘She don’t want to be here.’ She has nothing to do with that. This is my career. This is my decision. Of course, I got to consult her with everything. It wasn’t one conversation I had with her where she said, ‘Let’s get out of Denver.'”

Vazquez grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., and is an actress who has hosted music and reality shows. Anthony was born in New York but grew up in Baltimore. The couple married in New York on July 10. During the wedding, some of Anthony’s family members and New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul raised the possibility of Paul and Anthony playing together in New York. Anthony and Vazquez also have an offseason home in Los Angeles.

“It’s normal, you got to consult with your family about decisions like that,” Anthony said. “That’s all she has been doing. She hasn’t had any say-so what I should do or where I should go.”

Anthony said he expected to play in Thursday’s game against the Miami Heat.

“Ya’ll will have another interview with me Thursday,” Anthony told reporters. “I guarantee you that.”

That Thursday night game, on TNT, should have plenty of subplots swirling. And provided there is no mega-deal that’s been done yet, you can add this latest New York Knicks-related twist to the roster.

According to our main man Adrian Wojnarowski, also of Yahoo! Sports, Amar’e Stoudemire is doing whatever he can to make sure Anthony joins him in a Knicks uniform:

After hearing Carmelo Anthony express public doubts over the New York Knicks’ desire and need for him, Amar’e Stoudemire reached out to tell the Denver Nuggets star that he “wants him in New York,” a league source told Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday.

The Knicks’ forward recently contacted Anthony via text message with a two-fold agenda: Make sure Anthony knows that Stoudemire himself wants Anthony at his side, and push Anthony to resist a proposed trade to the New Jersey Nets. Stoudemire is sensitive to public suggestions that he would prefer to play without a Madison Square Garden co-star and has repeatedly expressed that to Anthony.

By Thursday night, the ‘Melo-to-Miami rumors should be floating around, as if we needed another iron tossed into this already raging fire. ‘Melo, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh … sorry, we couldn’t resist!

In addition to your daily dose of news regarding the most discussed trade in the history of sports, there was actual game action around the league last night. And you can catch up on all of it in just a couple of minutes with the Daily Zap:

Steve nash is gonna resign after this year so shut the hell up gay lakers fans, steve would rather die then play with kobe, which took like 2 rings from him and arguably one of the suns biggest rivals right up there with the spurs and most importantly steves rivals too.

  6. CHRIS SPROUL says:

Hopefully he stays until FEB 24, im coming over from Australia for the Celtics game, would love to see Melo play

  7. Sammy says:

Denver is going to get nothing in return if they don’t trade Melo to the Knicks. Better off getting some good players than nothing at all. An opportunity to get Chandler and Gallinari and a couple of first round picks is not that bad of a deal for the Nuggets considering the alternative. Melo would fit perfectly with Amare and Raymond. The Nets will never win a championship. The Nets are like the Clippers. It would be hard to be a Clipper fan if you got the Lakers. Send him to the Knicks and all this nonsense will end.

  8. Jordan Smith says:

Carmelo to NY thats it he will be a knick and all the knicks need now is a center and a solid one!

  9. Joy says:

I think Melo should go to the Clippers. They have some excellent pieces in place and, with him, they would take over the Staples Center. No longer the Lakers little sister of the poor – they would contend in the playoffs and could beat the Lakers. He has a house in LA – so why not go there? They need a young contending team in the West – all the good Western teams are getting old.

  10. Miami Heat says:

    Carmelo, go to MIAMI!

  11. Sean says:

YES! @ LKR4life TRADE STEVE NASH TO THE LAKERS FOR SOME DRAFT PICKS AND WHO CARES WHAT PLAYERS MIAMI HAS BEEFED UP THEIR ROSTER FOR THE PLAYOFFS AND THE LAKERS NEED TO DO THE SAME THING, LOOK HOW BAD THEY LOST ON CHRISTMAS, IF THE LAKERS WANNA COMPETE FOR ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP THEY NEED TO ADD A BETTER PG WHICH SHOULD BE STEVE NASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!All kobe has to do is be willing to share the ball with steve and let him create, look at how good Kobe Gasol Artest and Bynum play already and imagine how good they would play with Stevey creating plays for them and giving them a way more reliable shooter than Derek Fisher.

  12. Kyle says:

How many “main men” do you guys have exactly?

  13. Bob Marley says:

Please look at it this way. Carmelo has no desire to be with Denver, he does not want to play for the Nets (Who would?) No way in hell to go to Chicago. Whoever said he would go to Orlando must be high. The only team he wants to play for is NY, and we want him. Basic addition. Knicks want him + Camelo wants Knicks + Big Paycheck = Carmelo playing for the Knicks. As for whoever it was saying Steve nash to the lakers for Joe Smith, Matt Barnes, and Steve Blake, and Luke Walton. HORRIBLE DEAL! Blake is ok at best, Barnes is out for the season with knee surgery, Joe Smith will probably retire after this season, and Luke Walton is just plain terrible. Suns are looking to build for the future, and Joe Smith retiring would not help in the least. There aren’t many good fits for Nash on contending teams because of other good PG’s on the team. I would say his best option is going to Dallas as PG or SG (Nash and Kidd on the same team.. great passing team) Dallas has some good pieces to send like JJ Barea, Beaubois, and Ajinca. Imagine a lineup being Nash, Kidd, Caron Butler, Nowitzki, and Chandler. The problem being slary cap… but still

  14. Silver says:

Yea, Nash needs to win soon lol. Going down as the best shooter and arguably the best point guard without a championship would suck, but thats not his fault. His numbers are always amazing.

Back to Melo, New York is crap for him to be honest. I know they still won’t be able to compete with Miami, Boston, and other beasts of the East. Melo and Amare wouldn’t work. Denver is the best chance for Melo to win, not including teams outside of the Nuggets, Nets and Knicks. Denver is a scary team. I’m sure when they are healthy, no team would want to play them. They have the same team plus Al Harrington that almost took out the Lakers, but blew 10 point second half leads in both game 5 and 6 in 09.

  15. Sean says:

PLEASE EVERYBODY CONVINCE STEVE NASH TO GO TO A CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDING TEAM HE DESERVES A TITLE MORE THAN ANYBODY IN THE LEAGUE RIGHT NOW!

    • LKR4LIFE says:

STEVE NASH, PLEASE COME TO THE LAKERS!!!PHOENIX, we’ll give you LUKE, we’ll even add BLAKE and JOE SMITH AND MATT BARNES…see how good PHONIX will become????it will catapult them into the playoffs while allowing STEVIE NASH to get his due CHAMPIONSHIP…

Phoenix will get BLAKE as a starting point, JOe SMith, a vet to help solidify the big man spot maybe even playing PF for them while helping lopez and grotat out at center, BARNES will be a GREAT addition for them when he gets healthy as he is a good defender and will back up VINCE CATER, Luke is a team guy and will provide some stability..

now SUNS, what say YE??????????????????help a BROTHA out BROTHA!!!!GET STEVE NASH TO LA

    • MJ23 says:

@sean, your own command of the language is not so perfect. the verb convince is never followed by the infinitive form (to). try persuade maybe. this is not a linguistics class. let the dudes exprees share their thoughts without fear of being corrected on spelling bs. @ david. we get ur point, but I think the guy was joking about melo to HEAT (salary cap issues and what not).

  16. Sean says:

lol @ David “would be a disaster to all the teams in the NAB” dudes need to check their spelling hahaha

  17. orlando fan says:

Melo should go to orlando for j rich and hedo

  18. Bucknasty says:

I really dont understand why new jersey would pick him up. or even chauncy at that matter. i HIGHLY doubt either will sign an extension with the nets so basically they will just be renting melo and chauncy for three months. Melo will be a Knickerboker., If not in feb then definately next year. If new jersey were smart they would pick up melo then trade to ny for chandler (id hate to see him go) and gallinari. But hey.. maybe that is their secret plan. Go Knickerbokers!

    • Russ says:

@ Bucknasty why on earth would the Nets be smart to trade Harris, Favors and all those 1st round draft picks for Melo just to trade him for chandler???

  19. shane says:

    I love Anthony….
But would New York not be better served by acquiring some BIG bodies?
To handle Boston and Orlando and LA if it ever came to that? Is Anthony really enough to move New York up the ladder alone?

  20. cp3 says:

chris paul going to miami next year.. miami trades chalmers.. thats what rileys thinking.. haha! lol!

    • THEHEATSUCK says:

That is one of the dumbest things i have ever heard on this site. After signing the three chumps….the heat are broke. They couldnt dream of having enough money to sign a Chris Paul. Thats a joke.

  21. Roy says:

The bottom line is that someone is definitely going to lose here, and I think it is gonna be carmelo. Carmelo wants to go to NYC and he told us before that he will not sign a long term deal with the Nets therefore will leave the nets during this upcoming summer’s free agency. That is the biggest reason why the Nets are having a hard time finalizing this mega deal. Its pathetic how Carmelo keeps saying that he is being professional and not focusing on this trade rumors. Yeah he isn’t but he is the root of all this mess. Nets won’t want him if he doesn’t sign an extension, and Denver don’t have any other team that has the assets for Melo. And Mello knows that and he also knows that if he leaves Denver in the free agency, they will be broken just like the CAVS. Melo is a heartless pathetic player who is in this for his own self intrest. BUt I don’t blame him. He is a good player and he deserves to be in a contending team, not a rebuilding team like Nets. And as for denver, they are dipping lower in the playoff picture now so yeah, this is gonna be one messed up trade deadline.

  22. Quincy says:

Man, Denver vs Miami, Now thats gonna be a game right there… I can’t wiat to see that.

  23. Stuart says:

Can’t say I’m sure where exactly ‘Melo is going to end up, but he will be a bd fit for the Knicks – they have one of the best offenses in the NBA at the moment, so bringing in a new guy who would have to become the focus on offense would be a bad idea. Stick with what you got NY!

  24. SSD LAKERS FAN says:

Why would Melo want to go to New Jersey. If he wants to win he is better off trying to get some peices in the mile high Denver than go to a franchise and start from scratch. Denver needs to get a new coach (I have a lot respect for George Karl but he has health issues and needs to focus on that and I wish him the best). In all areas Denver is just hanging on, they need to move the franchise forward by trading Melo ASAP and hiring a new coach. They fact is they are losing a top superstar in the league (although i believe is not at the level of Kobe, Howard, Lebron, and Rose) and need to start thinking of the future.

MOVE ON DENVER. MELO is like the GF you know your going to break up with but keep trying to make it work !!! Its a lose lose.

  25. Ken Rabin says:

‘Melo and his teammates were brilliant last night and based on what transpired, I have to think the next big name to be traded will be Nash and not Anthony.

Anthony is really in the driver’s seat. What I hope he does is sign the extension (which is the proverbial bird in the hand and is clearly in his best financial interest)… and stay in Denver at least through this season to help the remarkable George Karl and his teammates take another run at the Lakers and all… Finishing the season in style with Denver has to be a whole lot more satisfying an option than heading to Jersey with a disgruntled Billups and all.

Then If Melo and the team still wish to part over the summer, or shortly after the lockout ends and a new labor contract is signed, then a fair deal with the Knicks (Gallinari, Chandler, Douglas) and a third or fourth partner could be done.

  26. David says:

Melo to the Heat? It will be a disaster of an epic proportion for all NAB teams. No team will stand a chance of ever winning a championship. At least not on till they stop playing together or retire.

  27. petty taratino says:

I would love 2 see melo team up with rose, boozer and da bulls but i dont see hat happening so New York would be a great home for him!!!!!

  28. kevin says:

yeah, i think mello’s gonna pass nets. he wont get no championship there. so whats the point right. well about new york… you know what im sayin

  29. Carmelo Join the Lakers! says:

And you win multiple championships here and in few years you will become the leader of this winning franchise

  30. Zoe says:

Forget is New Jersey, your hopes & dreams for Melo & a championship is “poof!” Hahahaha! Either he stays with Denver of he goes to NY or Chi Town

  31. Samdon Jennings says:

Surely Carmelo will wait it out… surely he doesn’t want to be in New Jersey. New York have an open checkbook waiting for him if he sees out the season with the Nuggets. Plus, Billups doesn’t want to move. If you think about it, what’s another year with a semi-contender if he can end up with a super team in new york, compared with a slog in new jersey that cannot yield anything more than the nuggets are currently doing.
