Yao Trade Chatter Heating Up?

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – Might there be another blockbuster trade on the horizon as we head into 2011?

If you believe what Yahoo! Sports NBA columnist Adrian Wojnarowski tweets (and we do, he’s always on the money), the next superstar to enter the crosshairs could be Rockets center Yao Ming.

Woj, a fave here at the hideout and a guest on Episode 36 of the Hang Time Podcast, sent out two Tweets about Yao this morning that piqued our interest:

With lure of insurance offering $8M discount on his expiring $17M salary, Houston exploring Yao Ming trade on several fronts, sources tell Y

Some teams exploring trade for Yao to re-sign him on short deal, or just get cap relief on his expiring deal, sources say.

Between the Orlando, Phoenix and Washington mega deal and whatever happens with Carmelo Anthony in the coming weeks, the days leading up to the February trade deadline should be filled with interesting possibilities.

Yao being involved in a trade, however, would be global news on a scale that few other potential deals could match.

I think it would be awesome if he got traded to the Hornets. Helping CP3, West, Okafur, Ariza. That would be TIIITE. ( Hoping CP3 doesn’t go anywhere.) hahahahaha

  2. mark says:

I THINK yao will fit in miami..because miami has a weak center…

    • jjhgghdhgf says:

1 how miami have enough money to trade yao on their team
2 yao will not play anymore in his career and he will not be traded unless stubid clippers or minnesota want use their all cap space

      • Carter says:

he is 9 million……. the heat have an exception for 3 mill already they could add joel anthony who is about 3.5 million eddie house which is about 1.5 the something else the heat can and should do it

      • Jaiegh says:

Miami would be nice. again we talking trade though. it could happen, unlikely, but it can. who knows whats really on the budget radar I9 for the heat. who knows with all that drug money down their they can afford it lol.

  3. meeks says:

Okafor is playing well this year, I can’t see NO giving up his PT or trading him. If Yao still wants to marketable, Toronto would be a good option, but they the Raptors definitely won’t give up Barg. I can see Yao going to the Lakers or Orlando if his contract wasn’t huge. Maybe he can back up Joakim in Chicago.

One thing is for sure, if he gets traded to a losing team, he will most likely retire when his contract expires.

  4. S Herb says:

Ok…howz he gonna help anybody …not this year… N with contracts expiring left and right…will he go to a team whoz big star is not going to re-sign…still can’t help a team then

  5. ddddd says:

just gotta remember that the salaries have to add up if as well as all of the ticky tack CBA rules that the players are still under. The other thing is that Houston has to agree to it. The only way anything happens with this is if a team has the creative pieces to make it work for their long term interests. Remember Yao is injury prone.

Yao is a contract at this point… Nothing more until he resigns or signs with a different team next season….. Which is sad because when he is healthy Yao is a beast….. when he is healthy that is…

  6. Lakers Man Here! says:

Haha! They should have shopped him a couple of years ago! Who wants him now really! There’s constant chatter goin on that his career is over! A healthy Yao anyone would want, but the man is an injury nightmare now!

  7. Lakers Man Here! says:

I’m wondering about the Lakers at this point! They’ll be entering the trade mix if the team performance continues goin South, believe me. I love the Lakers but there’s something goin on with the team rhythm and chemistry right now. If it continues I know Kupchak will go shopping! Kobe, Pau, Odom, Bynum, Fisher, are etched in stone. Some of these other guys I’m not so sure though! Hopefully they’ll just pick up their play and do what they’re capable of!

    • Kobe is Shotjackin AGAIN says:

Kobes playin ridiculously TERRIBLE basketball over the last week or 2, puncuated with tonights effor against the Spurs..shootin 20% but thats ok he’ll still put up 20 shots and only dish 1 assist…cause he’s Kobe Bryant…man screw that Kobes bein a CHUMP these last few weeks..and all hes doin is arguing on the court CONSTANTLY now..thats funny..real funny…Kobe is pissed cause FATHER TIME is winning the battle..is whats happening..so I say

Trade Kobe to Denver for Melo while Kobe still has some kind of trade value cause he keeps playin like this and he won’t even deserve his All-Star spot. TERRIBLE ball by Kobe.

  8. HndA says:

I ain’t no NY Kncks fan, but it would be owesome to pair up Yao with Amarare, and add a creative deal to get Steve Nash out of the desert and to the big apple, and you definitely have a CHAMPION there…..

    Good luck!

  9. Lakers Man Here! says:

@ Mark. Don’t think Miami could afford him. They’re maxed out with the big 3!

    • Greg says:

Miamis team salary is under 60 million a year Dallas is over 100 Million a year. iN THE nba YOU CAN EXCEED THE CAP BUT YOU HAVE TO PAY A LUXURY tax . Dsllas the Lakers and many other teams are over the cap a pay the tax. Miami and Boston are bothe under the cap and do not pay a luxury tax. They can afford him but Mickey A has to PAY. He would fit well because he wouldn’t have to play a ton of minutes and Riles loves big centers.

      • Kobe is Shotjackin AGAIN says:

Exactly…gee how many years the Lakers been PAYIN for chips with the luxury tax?? ALOT…Miami could easily pay it because #1 their team value has most likely doubled already since last year or pretty darn close..and # 2 its just going to KEEP going higher and they won’t need to worry about payin any luxury tax cause Arison will easily be able to afford it. I say we do it and let Yao rest this year and have him for the next.

      • B-Ballislife says:

ok dude, you went over the limit of hating…but kobe should stop shooting 20+shots everyday

  10. Lakers Man Here! says:

Miami could possibly make a trade for him, but why would they? They’re playin too well right now with what they have!

  11. mbe 28 says:

I think he should stay a rocket. but then t mac should go back. then that would be the good old rockets team I know. like in the play offs vs the lakers.

  12. Tenki says:

Miami doesn’t need Yao, he is a liability for them on the floor. He would just slow them down a lot, and the spacing for the Heat offensively would be cramped up. Plus, they can’t afford him anyway, unless Yao would let his current contract expire and he sing for the Heat at a veteran’s minimum when Big Z or Howard decides to retire.

I think Yao fits best with San Antonio, but it’s very unlikely that the Spurs will make a move to acquire him. He’s had a career full of injuries, and you can never tell how long can he stay on the court. In fact, Yao already considered retiring if his foot would give him more problems.

  13. mark givera says:

i think it would be better if yao will go to lakers :)

  14. juda says:

    he suks hes finished

  15. Sean says:

Do you people even read the article? HE WON’T PLAY ANYMORE, it’s just for cap room….Wow really? Less tv more read-e.

  16. dude says:

yao in miami hmmm i dont think so!!! but miami need a center and another guard to fulfill the roster but i think its more nice if they got chris kaman and Baron Davis they and Randy Foye they can trade Udonis Haslem, Mike Miller, Mario Chalmers,Eddie House if this deal than the miami heat line will gonna be like this Guard Baron Davis Guard Dwane wade SF LBJ F Chris Bosh Center Chris Kaman and the reserved is jones, howard, foye, damier, and try to trade Joel Anthony Carlos Arroyo and ilgauskus and future draft ick for wizard try to get Josh howard and KIrk HInrinch if the deal than again the miami heat roster will be Guard Kirk HInrinch GUard Dwane Wade SF LBJ F Chris Bosh Center Chris Kaman reserved Baron Davis, Randy foye, Juwan Howard, Erick Damier, James Jones, Josh Howard, and get some free agent…

  17. dude says:

and also try to get Larry Brown to become head coach of miami and make erick soelstra a asst coach!!!

    • Vlad says:

dude…first of all E. Spoelstra is doing a great job…he can become one of the great coaches and second…all of those trades you mentioned just don`t fit or the players have big salaries and don`t fit. miller i think is going to be very good in this team .. he needs a little more time….and U. Haslem is one of the most important pieces, who usually leads the team in rebounding, who plays with big tenacity and is the team CO-CAPTAIN. Josh Howard has a big contract i think and Heinrich even a bigger one. Baron Davis is a talented player but an “icon” for lack of motivation, lack o defense, bad decisions and unprofesionalism. I`m sure Pat Riley will be thrilled to have him :) )

  18. david says:

Van Gundy wore Yao out with that stupid “high pick and rooll” with the likes of Steve Francis and Rafer Alston. A player as big as Yao should have been used primarily 6 feet from the basket and not running vertically from the top of the free throw line and further out sometimes, and then having to run in quickly to try to get rebounds. That is why Yao’s rebounding stats were not too good early in his career. Van Gundy did not play Mutombo enough either. Van Gundy never thought outside the box such as playing Yao and Mutombo together often. Mutombo languished on the bench most of the time when Van Gundy was coaching.
Mutombo proved later on, wehn Van Gundy left, that he had a lot of quality playing minutes left in him.

Throughout the years, dominant big men have had a dominant power forward or all-star caliber guard on tehir team.
Shaq had Kobe, Lanier had Dave Bing, Walton had Maurice Lucas, Parish had Mc Hale and Bird, Malone had Bobby Jones and Maurice Cheeks or Collins, Mutombo in his prime had McDyess, Bill Lambier had Issah Thomas and a slew of other big men on the “Bad Boys” teams

The Rockets never had a dominant power forward or point guard to team up with Yao. An analogy would be like buying an expensive Formula racing car and signing a “no name” driver. The Rockets never had a proven shooting guard to space the floor either. They should have overpaid for a pure shooter, a Kyle Korver type etc …

Van Gundy should have used Yao like Shaq in his “hey-day”. Van Gundy kept trying to use him like a Karl Malone type of power forward. Adleman used Yao on high pick and rolls also but noit quite as much as Van Gundy did. IN the last game of 2009 when Yao hurt his foot severely, Damn Adleman played him about 40 minutes in a game that was already lost, late in the 4th quarter. Yao was grimicing in pain during that game and Adleman never noticed until Yao stumbled near the sideline.

The Rockets used Yao as a marketing tool, just like the Chinese. Apparently, exploitation is common in Communist and Capatalist socieities.

  19. pinoy says:

he should go to phoenix and be handled by their aaron nelson. He’ll be rejuvenated there like mcdyess, amarye’, nash, and grant hill. Phoenix will become a top team again with carter’s comeback :)

  20. specialfriedrice says:

yao is done, just like he has been for the last 5 years, the only reason a team would get him is his expiring contract, he will never play again, just like he has hardly played his entire career, big waste of time, only reason houston held on to him was because from a bussiness perspective he is a cash cow for the rockets from a overpopulated china.

  21. mike says:

are you guys kidding me!!!! yAO WOULD FIT WHERE?????? THE MAN CANNOT FIT ANYWHERE
HE IS WOUNDED, OUT FOR THE SEASON AND PROBABLY THE END OF HE’S CAREER. He was great while he lasted, but lets face it…… Its over for him. He has the heart but is just not physically capable. PERIOD. And we as fans should find a way to get over that bitter fact

  22. mike says:

are you guys kidding me!!!! yAO WOULD FIT WHERE?????? THE MAN CANNOT FIT ANYWHERE

  23. mike says:

Ok is this about Yao or Miami. I have heard miami mention more times than…… well too many times. Miami is not winning a championship anytime soon withouty a legitimate center, that will enable them play a half court game. right now miami looks like the old SUNS. they got speed. will make the playoffs, get past a few rounds and end their season. Yao is not what they are looking for at this point Yao is not what anyone is looking for

    • KingCobra25 says:

They defeated the lakers with the size of bosh, ilgawuskes, anthony and dampier. They Heat ahve three huge superstars and two lethal transition scorers. The suns never had three of the biggest superstars in the league. so heat are a championship contender team. By the way Yao is a nobody and should could the nba and become something else. He is completely worthless

      • mike says:

I know you feel you really said something of great value and at first glimps you would be right. But just answer this simple questiopn. Doo you really think Miami can beat the likes of the celtics who By the way have… Perkins, shaq, jmaine o’niel, and Big baby in the center position. in a 7 game series. Just to keep everything in perspective anything short of a championship is a failure for Miami. I can bet you anything… theya re not even coming out of the eastern conference without a legit center. They have to be more than a championship CONTENDER. They have to be the championship team. They were contenders before the trade…..

      • mike says:

Ok..Dont get me wrong I know they are a good team but do you think they REALLY can do it 4 out of 7 games ina series. thats the real question. I mean The houston Rockets with No yao took the lakers to a game 7. everyone including this BIG Houston Fan knew that Houston was not gonna win that game 7. I know Miami is a much better team thatn Houston was. But frankly the gotta worry about getting out of their conference first

    • Heat Fan says:

      @Mike

Well apparently YOU are making it about Miami’s title hopes, instead of just commenting if Yao should go to Miami, so ask yourself that. Bottom line is that no matter HOW you want to skate around it, the Lakers were dominated by Miami. Bosh is indeed NOT overrated and HANDLED the Lakers bigs. You say Boston? Well gee idk lets play Boston again NOW when we haven’t ONLY played 1 and 5 games respectively into the season. Next month we get them again in about 6 weeks from now so it will be a statement game again for us and the Heat will rise to it just like they did the Lakers. In the end you are just hatin, you actually are gonna sit there and type “They were contenders before the trade”. Yea everyone knows Miami was better withOUT Bron and Bosh, ok. Man what an idiot statement.

      • mike says:

        @ HEAT FAN
I cannot believe that your statement was a reply to what i siad. It just did not flow. Let me start with your last statement. I never said that they are not a better team than they were before the trade. did you see that anywhere in my statement. i said they were contenders. do you know what a contender is. Ok when you reply to this give me your definition of a contender. what i said is that anything short of a championship is a loss. and right now they are NOt a championship team. Next If you think winning one game against any team signifies that they can beat them in a series then You really should change your name from miami fan to NOVICE. Belive me I feel you though you are simply a die hard miami fan. nothing wrong with that. I’m a d ie hard Rocket fan. But neither one of these teams are winning championships as they stand right now. Ok and too your first statement just read previous blogs, i did not start the miami talks I just continued it. So before you end your Conversation with statements like what an IDIOT STATEMENT. Think …. it will help you if you think. Simply put there are many teams that are better than they were last year including Miami. that does not make them a championship team including MIAMI

  24. Frank the Tank says:

It sucks to see Yao out again with another injury, I mean had Tracy McGrady and Yao stayed healthy for 1 or 2 seasons I could see them both with a ring when they were together, they just cant stay healthy.

  25. Omarisgay says:

He could fit in toronto perfectly but Toronto would have to take calderon’s ugly contract + a young player; I hope he’s going to play this year tho..

  26. Eric says:

If anyone should trade for Yao, it should be the Portland Trailblazers. Greg Oden for Yao Ming. Who will play a regular season game first?

  27. nayr says:

how about trade him to Toronto Raptors……….wohoooo championship for canadians.. lol.

  28. dc says:

i want him to be traded to the nuggets for balkman and some first or second round picks.. if there is any… hahaha

  29. Lee says:

i think yao should go to the knicks and play with amare.

  30. renz_garnett says:

    how about utah or phoenix???

  31. richo_96 says:

I am a big Fan of Houston but Yao gets injured so much i want Houston to find a new Centre and would like a trae Yao Ming and Andrew Bogut, I think a bogut and brooks combo will be nice to see and also bogut doesnt get injured as much and hes young

    • mike says:

thank you Rico_96 thats all I have been try to tell MIAMI FAN. the man’s career is over people are talking trades. Why would any team want to aquire a player that played only partially last year and only what… 5games this year and is out till next season….

  32. T sqaured says:

He is definitly going to Orlando for sure I can bet that.

  33. hotshot says:

heck if miami had the space why go after yao when there’s guys like carmelo on the market

  34. airsj says:

tsqaured is right cuz the magic need a back up center and he cant play that many minutes n that would make us better n well beat the celtics big men which we need for a ring.

  35. JULB says:

if the rockets had not take almost eternity before firing van gundy, it would have been a different story,……
    tsk,….tsk,…..tsk,….. a squandered oppurtunity… :-(

  36. sifri says:

i wouldnt know why any team will take this guy? hes always injured and because of injury his numbers have slipped he already said if he get hurt he’s gonna retire so imsure hes done. the only reason i can see why is to relief salary space which is good but that would be the only reason. i wouldnt want him to play on my team

  37. kangkung says:

YAO should stay in rockets.. and make a trade where MELO can be a teammate of him.. it will be great if MELO, YAO, and BROOKS playing together also with MARTIN..this team can be a good playoff team

  38. kangkung says:

YAO should stay in ROCKETS together with a healthy BROOKS, MARTIN and then make a trade for MELO to play in HOUSTON, this can be a good playoff team..
    starting five
    pg- brooks
    sg- martin
    sf- melo
    pf- scola
    c- yao
what a nice team if only YAO and BROOKS are both healthy ^_^

    • mike says:

I’m not sure Camelo would choose the Rockets over the Nicks. what would you do if you were in he’s shoes? Considering that Yao is NOt gonna play any time soon and maybe not ever again

  39. jen says:

There is a rumor as per from very reliable source, Houston and Celtics having negotiation to trade Kevin Garnet to Houston, in exchange of Yao and Escola.

  40. TOMMY says:

CONFIRMED!!! Lamar Odom and Artest to Nuggets in Exchange of Carmello Anthony. GO LAKERS!

  41. jACKSON says:

TRADE TALK. Kobe to denver. C. Anthony to LAKERS!

  42. KTMCA says:

Garnet is going no where and he is staying in Boston…….lol

  43. luieb says:

i would never trade odom for melo??? maybe i would trade bynum for amare!!!! lakers need someone besides kobe to be aggresive on the offensive side!!!

  44. luieb says:

where did u hear the trade rumor at?? odom n artest for melo??? comfirmed by who????

  45. Bfan says:

Done deal KOBE to CHICAGO for Brewer Korvor Bogans 2 #1s and trade exception!!!!

  46. Heat631 says:

Yao to Miami?? Common Riley is smart enough just to trade for Yao.. He knows he is Yao is not the Yao we used to see back in the 2002-2007,, He is injury prone now.. And he said earlier this season that this might be his final season in the NBA..

  47. Ayao ko kay yao says:

I think, Yao should be on minnesota or cleveland…

  48. Ayao ko kay yao says:

Trade yao for allen iverson!!! put yao on the turkish team and let’s get AI again :D

  49. Melo says:

I think to trade Melo for Yao is very stupid I think he will stay in Houston because NO TEAM wants him because of the injuries and the time so he wiil stay or go to Timberwolves ,Nets, Sixers, Raptors, Kings and Clippers……!!!!

    Yao u Stink :p

  50. Usuck says:

Kobe to MIAMI and LeBron to LAKERS.. how sweet?

  51. Hao says:

Trade Yao to Toronto! An international diverse city with lots of Chinese basketball fans. Raptors has the trade exception to do it. C’mon Bryan Colangelo! Let’s get this deal done!

  52. Usuck says:

It would be better for Yao to play w/his team back in China…

  53. Miami Heat's #1 FAN says:

MIAMI NEEDS YAO CUZ THEY DONT HAVE A STRONG CENTER ONLY ILGAUSKAS

  54. bartowski says:

trade yao for peja… that would be good…. yao could fit in toronto an peja can play at houston

  55. phatu cute says:

i think yao is suitable on boston trade to perkins..also C.Anthony joins in miami.:)

  56. D says:

Yao isnt going to fit anywhere because he isnt playing again this season and he’ll probably retire. The guy cant stay healthy! So all you guys dreams of Yao being on your team are nothing but dreams!
