Duncan Appreciation Day

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – Getting a glimpse of Tim Duncan‘s first NBA basket reminds you of many of the nearly 8,000 other shots he’s made during his Hall of Fame career.

No flash or anything extra, just a man doing his workmanlike best to get the job done. It’s a shame we need to be dazzled to take notice of greatness.

It pains us that we only step back and appreciate Duncan’s exploits when he passes a milestone the way he did Friday night in Utah, becoming the leading scorer in Spurs’ NBA history with 20,810 points — to old school hoops heads Duncan is still  2,792 points behind “The Iceman,” George Gervin, who dropped 23,602 points during his Hall of Fame career that three seasons with the ABA Spurs.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich summed it up best:

“There’s no flash, no beating the chest. Just go up and down the court, go home and get a sandwich.”

Duncan’s big night was celebrated appropriately, they won in Utah for the first time since April 2009 and improved to 10-1 for the first time … which was perhaps the most surprising development of the night.

And history will be much kinder than we are to one of the game’s truly all-time great talents. Whatever Duncan lacks in sizzle he makes up tenfold in substance.

When you pass up the likes of Gervin and David Robinson on the career list for anything, you know you’re in elite company. And that’s why we’re going to spend the 24 hours after Duncan’s fabulous Friday night celebrating him the way he should be celebrated. Why wait until he’s done to show him the proper respect he deserves?

So we’re officially declaring this Duncan Appreciation Day here at the hideout (we make up our own holidays around here), a day when we sit back and enjoy a guy while he’s still getting it done.

Granting, Magic or Bird doesn’t have any, would they have the reputation they have today? And basketball is a team sports, no matter how great you are you can’t really have all the credits in the real sense of the word! Now, If there’s any superstar active player in the NBA who would carry his bag to Los Angeles and show his wares with the Clippers and win all the marbles and get them all! Even for one season, He would be the Best Player Ever! Quality over quantity. Efficiency together with effectiveness. Got me?

  2. Joe says:

If only Sir Charles had won a championship or two, he would have been in talk for the greatest ever. If not for a shot or two he could had at least one.Remember, Kerr and Stockton, and those daggers! Greatness and Luck equals championship. No championship can never discount one’s greatness. That’s why Michael Jordan is not only the greatest? but the luckiest! Consistently So Lucky!

  3. Joe says:

Despite of being one of the shortest, too!

  4. Joe says:

Championships or no championships, pound for pound, Charles Barkley is the best power forward of all time!

  5. Mike says:

A true great. Spurs leading scorer, and counting…

  6. Johannes says:

The guy is a awesome…congratulations from Brazil Mr Duncan !!!

  7. Claudio says:

I have been a Spurs fan for 10 years now and I am very pleased with their development so far even when I am alone in Costa Rica. They seem rejuvenated and keeping Duncan’s minutes to a limit so he won’t get too tired is a wise move besides you need to play Splitter. I hope we nail another championship this season oboy oboy oboy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Dado says:

SPURS are the CLASSIEST organization in NBA, bar none, nobody come even close

  9. Ismar_SA says:

one of the greatest players ever :D, congratulations to timmy :D

  10. joed reyes says:

Ever since Timmy entered the NBA, I became an Instant SPURS fan. Because I know right there and then, that this person is definitely a class on top of many other so-called NBA superstars wherein bragging, fistpumps, self-declared titles, etc.,etcetera have become the norm. CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU MR. DUNCAN and GOD BLESS YOU! And thank you to all the things you have done (quitely and humbly) to this great sport and organization and to its fans! I really admire you for being this humble amid all the accolades, fortune and fame. You will sorely be missed once you hang that jersey. And I for one, will be wandering again in search for another one that will closely resemble the humbleness and quality you have bestowed upon this sport. You and Mr. Manny Pacquiao (in pro boxing). Thanks HTB for this article.

When I become a father and my baby is a boy, I’ll name my son, Tim Duncan. Yes that includes his surname, just like how I was named by my parents with two names. I’ll put all aspects of Tim Duncan over the child, although not his physique and basketball but the attitude towards everything specially being humble and also give oppurtunity for others. The only damn ref that gives a technical foul on Tim Duncan is Crawford. Tiago Splitter is a lucky guy for playing with him.

Guys like him and former NBA player Dikembe Mutombo are the greatest assets of NBA. I felt so sorry for Steve Nash having that divorce which ruins his game play at the same time some respect for him. He’s one of those players in the NBA I give respect too as well.

  12. BigL16 says:

Mr.Fundamnetal has been the most consistent for the past decade and has made the Spurs the most consistent contender but still has one less ring than Kobe…this might be his year. It’ll be great to see the Spurs win it all this season, they’re overdue for another Championship.

  13. cancerboy says:

Great success Tim, and God continue to bless and direct you path.

  15. Francis of the Philippines says:

the Big Fundamental, for me, is the greatest power forward of all time, sorry mc hale, malone, and barkley. Timmy doesn’t need the flashes or the media hype to define his greatness, hey actions (accomplishments) speaks louder than words.

    GREATEST OF ALL TIME.

  21. Nyoky says:

Humble is the word for this superstar. Through his smile and through his eyes, you can appreciate his humbleness. He is a knight inside and outside the court.

Thank you for all these years of simply excellent work. Thank you for your sportsmanship and your greatness!!! Thank you also for keeping me as an NBA active fan!! You are my number ONE!!

You really pass with flying color!!

I’m celebrating and honoring your Appreciation Day from Puerto Rico. God bless you and SPURS 2011 Champions!

  22. aled says:

IF ALL PLAYERS BEHAVE LIKE TIM DUNCAN,
    – then sports will be something more than a ‘past time or hobby’
    – the pride (i.e. being flashy, foulmouthed, etc.) & stupidity that goes with fame & fortune for some lucky athletes will definitely be reduced
    – children growing up loving sports will have better outlook in life knowing that the right attitude (humility) & substance are what make the difference
    – team sports will probably be elevated to ‘brotherhood’
    – teams, coaches, owners & fans will be the ones to deserve that pride for having role models and have lesser worries from troublesome selfish prima donnas
    – ‘giving back’ & being grateful will be something every athlete will voluntary do
    – generally, there will be lesser sports-related crimes

IN SPORTS, as in daily life, we seldom encounter people like Tim Duncan so I likewise applaud this Appreciation Day for him. I guess this only signifies that we desperately need more people like him in sports yet we see so very few. I guess what the Sportsguy wrote before is true – Tim Duncan is the only one making the difference in the NBA. If I might add something to that……not only the NBA, but all of sports.

We are very lucky in our generation to have someone like you, Sir Tim. Thanks & we wish all the best!

“Good, Better, Best…..never stop until your good is better and your better your best.”

  23. Vince Visco says:

That rookie class was not mesmerizing at all, but he proved that he stood above the rest of his buddies in that draft and the rest of the NBA for many years to come. I was 12 and did not like his game that much when he first entered the league. I was more on the flashy and flamboyant styles of AI and Kobe. But being one of the taller kids in class and on the team, coah asked me to watch tapes of this rookie who has solid fundamentals (owing to 4 yrs of honing his skills in college) whether it be offense and defense. And truly, that slow approach of the game that allows you to think and what you’re supposed to do under the right circumstances, I owe it from watching his video tapes.

MR. DUNCAN YOU ARE ONE OF THE BEST! i AM GLAD THAT YOU BROUGHT YOUR STUFF TO THE BIG LEAGUE!

Young guys should learn from him too, rather than learning all those crossover moves that over the years seem to be like carrying the ball. Start with your fundamentals, and playing our beloved game the right way and you can never go wrong like TD!!!!!

  24. Isaac P says:

Ah it is about time somebody showed td some respect. I really hope San Antonio makes this a real holiday.

  25. Timmmay! says:

Congrats TD! You’ve my favorite player, the greatest power forward of all time! Now, drive for FIVE!

Also, VOTE FOR ALL STAR! go spurs go!

  26. SpursnDeacs says:

Proud to be a big fan of Tim Duncan. I’ve been watching him as an avid fan since his freshman year at Wake Forest, and have loved watching him throughout his career as a Spur. Combine his on-court success and his selfless attitude, and you get one of the greatest basketball players to ever play the game.
Thank you Tim for being someone that we can look up to and respect, and congratulations on passing this milestone

  27. My Name says:

Congratulations, Tim!!! You are truly one of the greatest to ever play the game and it has been a privilege to watch you play!! Keep taking care of business and never change because I really admire your style. You are not a show-off or a loudmouth; you simply go out there and get the job done. You exhibit great sportsmanship and you appear to be extremely humble, but you’re also a fierce competitor on the court!! You have a quiet tenacity and it’s great!! Congratulations again!!!

  28. christian cortes says:

hello! I’m a big fan of the spurs here in Manila, Philippines. Duncan is a big monster inside the court. He can make points inside and jump shot. That was proven in NBA 2K10 and 2K11.

  29. bj says:

tim duncan is the best power forward in the nba ever…

  30. deidara says:

First of all Congratulation TD21, you deserved what you achieved now.

Tim Duncan is what we called TRUE SUPERSTAR, TRUE PLAYER, TRUE INSPIRATION TO ALL Basketball fans.
Tim Duncan have both the Talent and the Attitude.

Keep it up TD21. I’m sure you will be in Basketball Hall of Fame 100%..

    GodBless

  31. Charles Kinbote says:

He didn’t really pass Gervin, if you include Gervin’s ABA numbers he’s still 6,000 points ahead of Duncan, as much as I like Duncan and as great as he is (best PF ever and best player of his generation) he’s still never gonna anywhere near as good a scorer as the Ice Man

  32. Calvin Slu says:

Hats off to Timmy. Remember when he took less money so that his teammates could get theirs? Great basket-baller, Classier human being . . .

All the best Timmy – SPURS 2011 Champions!

  33. Duncan_fan says:

Tim Duncan is my favourite NBA player. He achieved everything an NBA player can imagine. No other current NBA player has accomplished as much as Duncan! He did everything very quietly. His numbers are still great! I am so proud of him. He made me a SPURS fan. Keep it up Duncan!

  37. li tonshing says:

i am a duncan fan… i love the way he plays the game.. congratulations and may your team get to the finals this season.

  38. alan i says:

anyone remember 2006 when we won 60 games then didn’t make the finals? The Honourable Timothy Duncan did not explode on his teammates, didnt blame anyone, instead he humbled himself and won it all the following year. since the dawn of this great gentleman the San Antonio Spurs has had the best win-lose stats of any professional team in the world for the same time period. Family man, mentor, philanthropist ,leader, friend. the man doesn’t wear flashy tattoos ridiculous messages or behaves uncouth, rapes, drinks excessively or attends a football game on the anniversary of an international tragedy. he does tweet away his valuable time. this guy is simply the MAN. Timmy the world loves you and you influence more than just basketball. love you.

  39. Henry says:

All due props to Tim Duncan on this achievement, I think it’s great to honor him for passing David Robinson. But c’mon, T-Dunc, you’ve got to beat George Gervin. I can’t imagine he’ll want to give up now when in a couple seasons he could unquestionably be the greatest scorer in Spurs history. Sure it’s undisputed, but people will always bring up Gervin until Duncan has passed him. All this said, I’m a Celtics fan and I still have to respect TD for what he’s done to the game.

  40. ralph says:

im big tim duncan fan…so thank you for doing the tim duncan appreciation day..i leave 90 mins south of l.a. and im tired of hearing kobe bryant’s name or lebron james…why they dont compare what his achievements agaisnt kobe duncan has more mvp finals and mvp ragular season than kobe…on lebron he got back-to-back mvp we gotta respect that…but so as timmy and they sweeeept them on the 07 finals…so who’s the man??…

  41. Juliosus says:

Mad props to this guy. His work ethic, attitude, and consistency sets a good example for anyone, not just athletes. He definitely deserves the four championships he’s earned. I’d love to meet him one day.

  42. veerkhan says:

Hi Duncan is having his worst year but the Spurs are off to their best will to like Duncan Out …now will to games Lakers or Spurs Playoff who like trun Lakers 2011 champs…
i happy you Kobe Bryant six champs …
Duncan will to you Paker teade out

  43. playtime says:

The Spurs might emerged as the NBA Champions 2011 before the lockout.

Spurs vs Heat in the 2011 NBA Finals with Spurs winning 4-0 sweeping the Miami Heat. (I hate Lebron for not winning at least one game against the Spurs in the 2007 NBA Finals.)

    West Conference Finals
San Antonio Spurs win over Oklahoma Thunder 4-2 (Los Angeles Lakers defeated by Oklahoma Thunder)
    West Conference Semi-Finals
San Antonio Spurs beats up the New Orleans Hornets 4-3 (New Orleans Hornets finally won against the Dallas Mavericks)
    West Conference Quarterfinals
San Antonio Spurs with the easy victory over Golden State Warriors 4-1

  44. Jonah says:

After The Bulls’ era was over ,TD was the the main reason I followed NBA ( from across the Atlantic ocean ). I can*t stand those flashy, selfdigging players that there are plenty of. TD was the quiet man, the best PF ever to play the game and one of the top 5 of all time, almost as great as MJ. His urge to win for the team, and not care so much the stats, makes him even greater. I hope he gets one more ring before he retires. If the Spurs top 3 stay healthy, he might do it in June.

  45. Virgin Islands says:

Tim Duncan you have been an inspiration to all of us here in the Virgin Islands and especially the Big Island of St Croix. We have followed you through out your college career til now and we thank you for everything that you do in the community. You have shown the world that you don’t have to be flashy to get the job done, you just go about your daily business and get it done anyway. We love you and we will continue to support you…..Our hearts are filled with joy to see what you have achieved as one of our very own. Continue walking the path that the Most High has paved for you and you will continue to be blessed in every way, once again we love you always……V.I. Massive BIGG UPPP!!!!

    • OJ says:

Anyone see the memphis vs heat game? Great game, heat lost! It seems they cant even beat the mediocore teams. Wow, this team needs some help!

  46. Josh/Ginobili says:

Congratulations T.D. We don’t need all the attention, we know and its on record that Tim and the Spurs are one of the Best in the League. With Parker back on form and Ginobili doing what he does best, we’ll make a run for No.5. Whether or not the rest of the league expects it is irrelevant. We’ve done it before and we’ll do it again. Experience over talent any day.

  47. FreshTuna says:

For more, YEAR-LONG appreciation of The Big Fundamental and his teammates, come join us over at poundingtherock.com. We never overlook what Timmeh brings the Spurs, and the NBA.

  48. Sunny says:

I am a die-hard Laker fan, but Tim is one of a kind. To have the resume he does and go unnoticed is absurd. Not just him, the entire Spurs organization needs to be appreciated a LOT more!… they currently have the best record in the NBA and everyone is talking about Boston, Miami and LA. I think the biggest reason the SPURS don’t get a lot of attention is that No body hates them… Every team has opposites, SPURS just have fans that either like them, or people that are neutral. Seldom do you meet someone that despise them… that doesn’t make for an exciting article. .. And I think that has a lot to do with the controlled and fundamental nature of their play.
Congrats Timmy! and I with SA the best of luck this season, and I am sure we’ll see them in the Western Conference Finals.

  49. LOL HANGTIME BLOG FAN says:

LOL YOU ALL READERS SHOULD READ ‘THE MATHEMATICIAN”S COMMENTS ON THIS PAGE. they are so funny.
Anyway………………..go duncan YOU CAN REACH THE 300000 POINT MARK! GO FOR IT. I REMEMBER WHEN YOU WERE MY BABY BOY WHEN U GOT UR FIRST TWO POINTS. AHHHHHH. I SCREAMED AND RAN AROUND THE HOUSE AND COULDNT STOP RUNNING AND SCREAMING AND TALKING AND BREATHING!

  50. Mr. E says:

The one thing I have always been impressed about Duncan is that he never really cared about the stats and just played the game. If Duncan really wanted to, he could have averaged 30 ppg based on his size, agility and a pretty good mid range shot for a big man. What Tim Duncan did was that he let the game come to him instead of forcing himself into the all-star picture. Tim Duncan has a high basketball IQ as he would score when he needed to but also knew when to hand the role to someone else if it meant that his team would win. Statiscally, Duncan is having his worst year but the Spurs are off to their best start in franchise history which to me says that Tim hasn’t really lost a step in comparison of handing the roles off to the other Spurs players and let them get better and helping the team. And I will agree that Duncan is the ideal sports model as he has never gained negative attention in the media as most sports figures do these days. Duncan is indeed a rare sports figure where he lets his game do the talking and nothing else.

  51. The Mathematician says:

They should make this a ‘Duncan Apology Day’ for every person who disrespected him and hurt him, mentally, physically, and emotionally.

  52. SP says:

    TI..TIM..TIMM.TIM.TIT.TI.TT.TTIM…TIMMAAAYYY!!!

  53. danito says:

its sad when hes gone, cuz u dont see that much of post players anymore, the nba gona miss players like duncan and shaq, all what we see is jump shooters, shaq is a real center and duncan is a real pf , not like fake ones like criss bosh

  54. The Mathematician says:

Duncan > Jordan > Kobe > Duncan > Jordan > Kobe. Nuff said, ‘ Duncan is the best player to ever caress a basketball’. I agree completely. This guy has the legs, the hair, and the face to be the new logo of the NBA (National Basketball Association). I suggest that on this day, everyone takes a one minute silence to remember how great this man was. Duncan will be greatly missed by fans and opponents alike. He will be comemorated deservately. He has done a lot for the Spurs franchise, and hopefully one day he will have his jersey number ’42’ retired with Parker’s ‘3’.

  55. kevin says:

i am NOT A SPURS FAN in fact can’t stand watching them play, but can’t take way anything Mr Duncan has achived over the years, turly a great player.

    4 NBA chips
    3 finals MVP
    2 regular session MVP
    all star MVP
    and ROY

    what more can he do????????

    • The Mathematician says:

He could win a few more championship and MVP titles. He has yet to claim a “Defensive Player of the Year’ award, and the ‘Scoring Title’. Moreover, he could still be the winner of the ‘Three-Point Contest’, the ‘Slam dunk competition’, the ‘H.O.R.S.E.’ game, and break Dwight Howard’s record of making more than two half court shots in a row.

    • Mr. E says:

The only thing he can is wait until he gets into Springfield, Mass.

  56. Bartigolek says:

    Tim Duncan > Kevin Garnett

Tim Duncan & manu & parker… they are still big trio in NBA. Don`t forget about it. They are better than Boston and Miami! Never unst…..

    Iam looking forward playoffs!

Congrats Timmy, you are the best PF of all time and one of the best players of all time. Congrats on the record and on your 14th season. Spurs rock, and so do you!

  58. Hisham says:

Congrats Duncan on this milestone. Huge Spurs fan since ’05 (when I came to the States) and have watched almost every one of your games since then and enjoyed watching every minute… hoping for another championship this year! WE LOVE YOU DUNCAN and it will be a sad sad day when you retire. GO SPURS GO!

  59. go to SAS says:

Greatest power forward ever!!! Timmy, the 4 time world champ, 2 time MVP.. what else do you want… He is compared to other big men eventhough they dont have the credentials he has.. Congrats timmy now lets get the 5th title…

  60. Luke says:

When I first started caring about basketball, it was the year the Spurs won that first title with Duncan (and because of him). He never smiled, he did a fantastic job each and every night, and he was a classy, substantial guy on the court. He changed the way I looked at basketball and at those who played professionally. He deserves more days like this. Thanks HTB.

  61. Die Hard Laker Fan says:

Tim Duncan represents Class, Dignity, and Excellence above anyone including Shaq and Kobe. Though I am a Laker fan I recognize truth when I see it.

    • richy210 says:

takes balls to admit that Die Hard Laker Fan, kudos to you. It will be a sad day when he does retire, hopefully he can retire on the same note as The Admiral, with a championship.

    • The Mathematician says:

Did he get NCEA endorsed in Excellence?

    • jon says:

i agree aloooottt of balls.lol im a die hard spurs fan for a laker fan to say that wow….but if it wasnt for those two teams over this decade..the rivalary..man theres alot of history….never thought i would say this but props to that laker fan..

  62. Pedrocobra says:

Koby vs jordan i believe that jordan is the greatest ever, but there some stats that could make koby better for example koby have more sixty points games, koby broke jordan record in the garden which was 55 koby scored 64 koby holds the high score game maybe in the last 25 or 30 years 81 point and one more edge that Koby has is that jordan never beat the boston celtics and Koby did.if you going to retirement with this kind of resume you also mightbe considered the greatest ever.and i think if you never beat the best team with more championship in nba history you cant be call the first greatest ever i could say in fair way they both are

  63. JA says:

Tim Duncan, you are an inspiration to us all. You are the ideal superstar to us: Someone who doesn’t get involved in the media hype, and just flat out gets the job done. You’ve inspired your team over the years and led them through many tough battles, and those 4 banners in the Alamo are the result. Continue to do great for the remaining of your career. Congrats once again, and you deserve one last ring before you’re done. GO SPURS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  64. Pedrocobra says:

THE BEST EVER BASKETBALL TEAM 1 michael jordan2 koby bryant 3tim duncan 4 magic johson in small forward because he play all position and hakeem olujuwan center . reserves power forward and six man charles barkley guard john stockton because koby bryant play shooting and point guard small forward larry bird center the great bill russel oscar robertson every body might say why not kareem why not chambeland because if jordan if the greatest ever so we have to to base our vote in players that make their name in jordans era

  65. Hilda G, says:

I think Ti m Duncan is the Greatest Big Man Player in the World. May you play as long as you have wheels. Beat Wishes from your greatest FAN.

  66. Banks says:

I love Tim Duncan, a lot of people don’t appreciate him. He has won rookie of the year, 3 finals MVPS one after his rookie year, 4 championships, Season MVP, he has been in the all star team, all nba team, and all defensive team every year of his career after his rookie season. And guess what? HE’s been with ONE TEAM his ENTIRE career. He’s not flashy, Tim Duncan is CLASSY!

  67. Pedrocobra says:

i was fan of charles Barkley i mean still but he is no longer playing.when i saw Barkley s days ending wake forest highlights of tim duncan start to hit all sport news in the nation i said to my self well i have barkley replacement tim duncan . i feel very honor of being timy fan because he never let me down,he gave me 4 championship 2 mvp 3 finals mvp rookie of the year made san antonio spurs the best franchise in all sport in the past 13 years im very happy i wish he could play 20 more years .adding more to my tim duncan resume one thing that i like a bout him is that he a family man moral man and humble i wish that all young player coming to the nba dont look michael jordan as an example to follow because i dont think that a man that treat his wife cheating her without considering her feelings shoulbe look as example jordan is too great in basketball but very deficient in family love because when he cheat his wife he not only cheat her he dint care about his kids feelings.but timmy is good example of full package greatness, koby bryant too because even when he had an affair he fought to fix his marriage.a great start is not only an skillfull man but also a great human bein congrats timmy

  68. AJ says:

Lifelong spurs fan here and I’ve been waiting on this for a min I love it he’s is the greatest the PF to ever play the game and now he getting a little pub though for us who know him best know it doesn’t really to him the rings and w’s and l’s but this is what the sum of the spurs organization a sleeping giant.

  69. John says:

Tim Duncan is the most unappreciated athelete of all time.

He doesn’t rape anybody, doesn’t get in trouble and unlike a lot of the over hyped players he actually has rings.

It was a sad day when David Robinson and Reggie Miller retired and it’s going to be a really sad day when Tim Duncan is all done.

I hope he gets 5 titles.

  70. Awbach says:

The best power forward of all times. Setting a standard in his team, his community and to all kids around the world. Congrats and well deserved to have an Appreciation day. (Spurs fans from Morocco)

    LETS GO SPURS!!!

  73. KillaRific says:

I REMEMBER GOING TO SPURS GAMES SINCE I WAS 6 IN ’92. DAVID ROBINSON WAS 1 OF MY FAVORITE PLAYERS AS A CHILD. MY FIRST GAME I SAW, THE SPURS PLAYED SHAQ HIS ROOKIE YEAR WITH ORLANDO. I REMEMBER ALL THOSE YEARS THEY WERE GOOD BUT COULD NEVER GET PASSED THE JAZZ. THAT IS UNTIL A PLAYER BY THE NAME OF TIM DUNCAN WAS BORN. I READ AN ARTICLE THE OTHER DAY ON THE BEST ROOKIE SEASON EVER AND DUNCAN WAS ON THAT LIST. I REMEMBER THINKING, “THIS GUYS A ROOKIE?” HES 1 OF A VERY VERY FEW PLAYERS THAT CAME INTO THE NBA COMPLETELY READY FOR THE NBA GAME. THERES PLAYERS THAT HAVE CAME INTO THE LEAGUE AND AVEREAGED 20 THEIR ROOKIE YEAR BUT THEYRE GAME WASNT FUNDAMENTALLY SOUND IN ALL ASPECTS. DUNCAN COULD HOLD DOWN ANY VET ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE AS WELL AS ON THE OFFENSIVE SIDE. THANK YOU DUNCAN AND MANY OTHER SPURS PLAYERS THROUGH THE 90’S LIKE “THE ADMIRAL”, SEAN ELLIOT, VINNY DEL NEGRO, AVERY JOHNSON, DENNIS RODMAN, DALE ELLIS, CHUCK PERSON IN HIS LAST YEARS, J.R REID, MARIO ELIE WHO HELPED MY ROCKETS WIN 2 CHAMPIONSHIPS AND MANY OTHERS.

MR SMITH, WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO HAVE A HAKEEM “THE DREAM” APPRECIATION DAY????
HIM AND DUNCAN PLAY THE POST LIKE VERY FEW IN NBA HISTORY HAVE

congrats #21..i am glad to say i witnessed history last night as u passed david and have the best start in spurs history not bad for what everybody calls an old guy team…here in the tone we have watched u since a rookie you have givin us something not all cities get to experience…a “CHAMPIONSHIP” X4….and we enjoyed them..lets go for 1 more…go spurs go

  75. I am smarter than you says:

A perfect example of someone that respects the game. Too many kids come into the league and never grow up. Duncan is a real role model for a young basketball player, not guys like LeBron.

    timmyyyyyyyy

  77. Franco says:

    Congratulation from an Italian fan.

He is the best to me.

  78. utku says:

He is not running after the stats or trying to score one more but just doing one thing , trying to do what the team needs.to win..Sometimes scoring 30 sometimes giving 8 9 assists sometimes blocking 4 5 but always keeping a standard for years almost 20 ppt 10 rb… To be a fan of this guy is also a privilidge..Thx Timmy..

  79. Bryan says:

This means a lot to a Spurs fan. Our team is aggressively overlooked around the league, among the sports media, and by most NBA fans. We don’t have the flash of the Suns, the supernovas of the Heat, or the location of the Lakers.

What we do have is four championships in nine seasons and one of the greatest player-coach relationships the sporting world has ever known.

Your article seems several years ahead of its time, highlighting that which only basketball purists and those of us who bleed black-and-silver seem to know: we’re living in an era that allows us to experience the greatness of one Timothy Duncan, MVPx2, as it’s happening.

  80. Tim Fan says:

Congrats to one of the greatest. Flash may win attention but his kind of skill and smarts wins championships!

  81. Mr. E says:

In his 14th NBA season, Tim Duncan quietly became a NBA superstar without all the added sizzle or flash. Instead, Duncan used his fundamental attitude to gain 4 NBA championships (3 Finals MVPs), 2 regular season MVPs, an all-star MVP, and was Rookie of the Year. Duncan joins an elite company with Gervin and Robinson and seemingly has accomplished everything in basketball. I have only 4 words left to describe Tim Duncan; future hall of famer. Congrats Tim.

  82. jonnn says:

    Tim Duncan is the man!
i love how all he cares about is the win; not the individual accolades.
    great humble player
    SPURS 2011 NBA CHAMPIONS!

    • OJ says:

The spurs are a good team and Duncan is a good player. But i dont know about the spurs being champions again anytime soon.

      • JV says:

        Duncan a good player??

Duncan is a great player, the best PF is NBA history. Rookie of the year, made the playoffs every year
since he has been in the league, always had 50 or more wins each season. He has made the all star
team every year. Three time NBA finals MVP. And he is well respected to everyone in the league.

Name a player who has the same success and as consistent as Tim Duncan.

I agree with Jonn, SPURS 2011 NBA CHAMPIONS.

      • Peter says:

Tim Duncan is great, one of the all time greats for sure…but as great as he is many people also overrate him.

There is no denying his greatness, but he is not not the best Power Forward of all time – top 5 probably, but not number 1.

Kar Malone was a two time MVP, an 11 time All Star and currently ranks 2nd all-time in total points and 6th all-time in total rebounds.

Likewise Charles Barkley ranks 18th (scoring) and 16th (rebounding) on the all time list.

Tim Duncan, as great as he is, is not in the top 30 on either of those two lists.

These achievements are all the more distanced by the that that Time Duncan (at 7’0″, 260) is one of the physically largest PFs ever to play the game – he has a MAJOR size advantage over pretty much anyone else at his position which aids in his ability to dominate and excel at PF. Tim Duncan would have played Center on any other team (i.e. if he didn’t have David Robinson to play beside) and may not have been quite as dominant a player through his career if he had to constantly match up against the likes of Ewing, Olajuwon, Mutombo and Shaq on a nightly basis.

Both Karl Malone (6’9″) and Charles Barkley (closer to 6’6″) were undersized at their positions, yet still managed to dominate the league more thoroughly then what Duncan has. The fact that those two guys never won championships shouldn’t take anything away from how utterly dominant they were over the course of their careers.

I wouldn’t hessitate to put TD in the top 5 all time at the PF position (along with Malone, Barkley, KG) but definately not number one.

      • PaulStar11 says:

Name another player in the history of the NBA that had as much success (never less that 50 winswhihc is astounding, and 4 championships) in over 10 years as Duncan WITHOUT a sidekick like Gasol, Bryant, Pippen, Jabbar (for Magic), Magic (for Jabbar), McHale, Moses, Cousy et al, Oscar, etc etc.
He has worked with a premier coach (one of the greats), fantastic role players and team players, no superstars or noticable/popular all-stars and he is easily one of the great interior defenders of all-time behind Russell (Duncan has always been extremely underrated in his posititoning skills and team defense and he has never been a pushover for any player one-on-one).
Good player, he was not – that rank is far below his deserving. Great player, indeed!

  83. rj says:

humility, a sound mind, and commitment to excellence. i ve watched duncan throughout his entire career as a die hard spurs fan. his successes coupled with humility is truly inspirational. each spurs game i watch in the twilight of duncans career is a treasure and a privelidge as a sports fan. thanks for representing the beautiful city of san antonio. GO SPURS GO!

  84. Showbaba7 says:

Duncan you are a true great man. I love your gentleness and your humility.

  85. Tenki says:

I was guilty that I have to be dazzled to appreciate greatness. By playing the fundamentals, Tim Duncan has earned yet another milestone in his flourishing career in San Antonio. This feat has only proved one thing: Sound fundamentals and the right attitude is a perfect formula for success. Keep it up! Duncan, you already won yet another fan in me.

    • The Mathematician says:

Your apology is not accepted. You shall be placed under retribution for two lives. Shame on you for not respecting Duncan earlier.

      • fedex says:

I agree…everyone should appreciate him as soon as he arrived in the league…or maybe when he earned his first champ ring…the latests is when he won his second…thats the least anybody can do…this man is crazy good…still!! and thats amazing…model of consistency…no major injuries…stays in shape….no fist pump…no nothing just workin’…
