Still Chasing ‘Melo

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – And you thought we were crazy for carrying on about Carmelo Anthony on Episode 26 of the Hang Time Podcast with Yahoo! Sports NBA writer Marc J. Spears.

We are certainly not crazy.

Despite the relative silence on the topic in Denver, Anthony’s name remains the hottest thing going in the Tri-State area (both the New Jersey Nets and the New York Knicks believe they have a shot to land him).

We understand that you’ve heard all this before about the Nets and Knicks — Free Agent Summer 2010LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, etc. — and their supposed pursuit of a big fish or two to swim in the water surrounding those areas.

Seriously, every little move being made by the Nets and Knicks these days is interpreted as a means to acquiring Anthony, who has done his best to stay mum on his future since training camp began.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports and Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, two of the most well-respected writers in the business, have made it clear that their sources indicate neither the Nuggets nor the Nets have given up hope on something being worked out in the future.

– Mike D’Antoni‘s 11-man rotation in New York? According to Marc Berman of the New York post it’s all about showcasing young talent for a potential deal for Anthony:

D’Antoni first mentioned the 11-man concept in Milan. And as he left Paris, it’s still in play. D’Antoni said he wants to press and run so fiercely, he needs bodies. The skeptical view is no eight-man unit has stood out, and they are showcasing guys for a Carmelo Anthony trade.

“We can play a lot of guys,” D’Antoni said. “We’re going to have to press, run and use more guys this year because they can obviously play.”

None of this news shifts the focus in Denver, of course, where the main issue remains Anthony’s desire to either remain with the franchise that drafted him or move on. There has been no definitive public statement touching that topic from Anthony or anyone associated with him.

But while we’ve been down on the Nuggets here at the hideout (nothing malicious, mind you, we just feel like they as presently constituted they do not strike us as a contender in the Western Conference anymore), there remains cautious optimism surrounding this team in Colorado.

And the caution and optimism all hinges on the same thing, Anthony. Denver post columnist Woody Paige describes it here a recent passage from his mailbag:
I went to the intrasquad game in Broomfield the other night  and was very impressed. I told Masai Ujiri and Josh Kroenke, the new kingpins of the Nuggets, “You take this team and add K-Mart and Birdman, and you’re better than you were two years ago. But you’ve got to have that guy sitting over there.”

That guy was No. 15, Melo. J.R. Smith, Ty Lawson, Al Harrington and Chris Andersen coming off the bench are stronger than an on-time rent check. Talk about energy, offense and a new, improved Lawson. I talked to both Andersen and Martin. They’re both antsy, but are doing the right thing. The Nuggets need them after Christmas, down the stretch and in the playoffs, not now, not at the beginning of the season …

George Karl is slimmer and healthier looking. He has been playing golf with his son. Carmelo and I talked briefly. He is handling all of this very well. Here’s what I get: He’d be happy to play for the Nuggets this season, despite all the talk, and the longer he spends with these players, the more he is convinced they have a chance to be very good once the full roster is available. The more he hears about a hard salary cap possibility, the more likely he will sign the extension.

The Nuggets have backed off all trade talks and are hoping he’ll sign. That deal with the Nets will be there next week, next month, in February, no matter what you might read. So if all fails, the Nuggets have that trade as a backup plan.

Harrington is going to be a big-time scorer on this team early in the season. Nene looks good. And Gary Forbes, the invitee, will make this team. Lawson will take another big step. And J.R. is J.R. But we have to see how the Melo thing plays out.

Don’t we all!

That’s where your wrong my friend. Miami has an excellent bench with mario chalmers, eddie house, juwaan howard, mike miller, and zydrunas ilgaskuas. Its not the best but it is a great supporting cast. The big 3 in NY i dont see happening, because chris has some help in trevor ariza and d-west. Carmelo still has a great squad but i dont think it will be enough to contend for a championship. The heat are going to the finals if they can stay healthy, their only two challenges this year is boston and the lakers and maybe orlando….but the heat have to be healthy in order to compete. Carmelo cant shut down lebron, but he can shoot over him. The Detroit pistions, when they were good, couldnt stop lebron. Carmelo can defend lebron but cannot stop him, and in my opinion lebron is unstoppable like d-wade or kobe. but carmelo is great and i think he deserves a big team like the heat or the lakers or celtics. He would fit into a team like chicago because they are in need of a great and consistent SG. but overall if carmelo stays in denver we will not win a championship. go lebron!!!! and carmelo!!!!! and Dwight!!!!!

I think Carmelo will try to make his own super 3 up in new york. He will talk chris paul into joining forces with him in new york with Amar’e. I believe those 3 actually have a chance at being the top in the east instead of the heat. If you stop and think about it Carmelo Anthony can shut down lebron james and has done it in the past many times.Amar’e Stoudemire on a good night is way better then Bosh in my opinion. Bosh is a good solid player but hes not what all the hyphe has made him. The X factors would be Wade Vs. Chris Paul one plays PG one plays shooting guard. I believe chris paul could be more helpful in setting up Carmelo and Amar’e then Wade with lebron and bosh. Also people think miami has a super good bench their bench still sucks

    • daez says:

Melo and LeBron match up really well. Melo can’t shut James down, no one person can shut down LeBron. Bosh is alot quicker than Stoudemire. Wade is an SG but has nearly the same speed as Paul. Paul is a great playmaker, but so is Wade and LeBron. Wade + LeBron setting up eachother, Bosh, or their decent shooters off the bench, that NYK dream stioll couldn’t beat Miami in a 7 game series.

i think nuggets will get to the playoff with anthony, but never in the finals. melo must stay to the nuggets and they are the one who needs another big name in their rouster to become a contender for the champiomship.

I think that MELO should go to NYKNICKS!!

  11. Andrew says:

The Nuggets are a solid team but they won’t contend for a championship this year, plain and simple. Melo will be traded at the deadline at the latest unless he signs the extension before then so the Nugs need to protect themselves instead of trying to “hope” that Melo changes his mind. He very well could but even after this season, how much longer are you going to pay Chauncey, KMart and JR Smith? They should have gotten Favors and those picks when they could have and just start over with Ty Lawson as the other bookend. But I digress, the Nuggets need to sell tickets and they won’t do that by trading Melo.

im glad the nuggets decided not to makea very stupid decision. i believe melo wants to test the fa but he is going to stay in denver. but w/ all this trade talk you are running him away melo is my fav player and i thnk if den keeps melo they will be nba champs

  14. Rip Greenfire says:

I’m just glad Melo stayed in Denver, he’s got such a good team, and George is such a good coach. I could understand if Karl said he was out this season that Melo would want to leave, but with Karl the Nuggets are still one of the top 3 teams in the west.

  16. Zzanzabar says:

The Nuggets have a solid team of this there is no doubt. As currently constructed the team can match any team in the conference on a game to game basis (with Melo of course). It will be the playoffs where the current team will fall short, they will not be able to win a 7 game series against the Lakers, and might be hard pressed against the revived Spurs. As for the other Western Conference teams they tend to match up favorably

The Nuggets desperately need a true power forward (K-Mart does not fit the bill) and a reliable point guard (JR Smith is, simply put, a head case). This team would be awesome with Steve Nash (or similar player)

    • tri says:

reliable point guard? they have CHAUNCEY BILLUPS… mr. BIGSHOT!
what they need is another big man aside from nene and andersen…
they’re too small against LA’s gasol and bynum…

      • WHAT!! says:

I THINK MELO SHOULD GO TO NEW YORK IF ITS ABOUT MONEY BECAUSE HE COULD GO TO A WAY BETTER TEAM THEN THE KNICKS. JUST LIKE LEBRON DID WENT TO THE BEST TEAM THAT WAS AVAILABLE. IN 3 OR FOUR YEARS HE WILL BE IN THE SAME SITUATION????? AMARES GETTIN OLDER. AND DANTONI IS A OFFENSE MINDED COACH WHO DOES NOT PLAY DEFENSE. IF HE REALLY WANTS TO WIN GO TO THE SPURS WHERE THEVE WON BEFORE. OR THE KINGS… I KNOW ITS SMALL MARKET BUT HE ONLY HAS TO SATY THEIR 41 GAMES OUT OF THE YEAR???????.WITH TYREKE AND DEMARCUS TYREKE MELO AND COUSINS CAN MACH UP ALMOST EVENLY WITH WADE LEBRON AND BOSH ISNT A HUGE DIFFERENCE….HEAT WOULD BE A LIL BETTER. BUT KINGS FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT. AND WHAT ABOUT????? THE MAVS I AM SURE THE MAVS COULD MAKE UP A GOOD PACKAGE WITH CARON AND DOMINIQU JONES AND MORE.

    • think says:

JR is their shooting guard. Karl often uses him of the bench and starta defensive-minded 2. Billups is the PG, may not be better than Nash, but has in his resume a championship and a finals MVP.

      • WHAT!! says:

Listen i think carmelo could do well in new york but maybe only for a couple years??? Amare is getting older and no offense to roger mason but it would be tough to guard wade. i if melo want to win badly and does not care about the money just like lebron then he should go to the team with best available talent and where he could contend for years. places like bulls, mavs kings etc…. i mean myabe nt the kings but they have talent in couple years tyreke will be as good or better than wade. seriously and they have the bigs the matchup with lakers and portland. so do the mavs and the bulls have boozer noah and taj gibson. so if he wants to win he should go to teams that have talent…knicks are gonna be better though.
