NBA: Where Fashion Happens

There’s long been a bond between the fashion world and the NBA. Diddy, of Sean John fame, once designed a Mavericks’ uniform makeover. And then there was that other famous designer who did that modern revamp for that one team.

OK, I’m stumped after Diddy.

My failure to find any more examples through Google aside, stick with the premise because summer is fashion season in the Association with at least six teams debuting new duds. Since we doubt any will make the runways of Paris, Hang Time is picking up the slack with its own fashion show.

The Cavaliers, Jazz, Timberwolves, Warriors and Clippers have officially released their new uniforms, with pictures  found on each team’s website. The Mavericks have yet to announce theirs, but their first-round pick was sporting the new look during a rookie photo shoot in New York. So it’s just a matter of time before Dallas makes its splash.

Cleveland
Our first model comes from Cleveland, as the Cavaliers move into the post-LeBron phase of their existence introducing a “new expression of wine and gold” in their home and road outfits. The clean look harkens back to the 1970s and includes the team’s DNA statement of “All for One. One for All.” printed along the collar.

Utah
The Jazz also took cues from their past with a new color scheme and logo dating back to the club’s roots in New Orleans. The colors are navy, yellow, green and gray, plus the music note — Utah’s primary logo from 1979-96 — has also made a return. The team’s new laundry premiered at a recent fan fest.

Minnesota
The T-Wolves dumped green from their palette in an effort to give the brand a “sleeker, simpler and more mature look.” The changes feature only the primary colors of blue, silver, black and white, while also replacing the tree line that adorned the neck of the last two jerseys.

Golden State
The Warriors are bringing back a personal favorite by reincorporating the Bay Bridge, a direct spinoff of the classic “The City” logo. Golden State is going with royal blue and golden yellow as the colors, getting rid of orange. Classy.

L.A. Clippers
The big change for the Clippers is using “Los Angeles” on their red road unis. “Clippers” on the home jersey has gone from red lettering to blue and there’s also some added piping down the sides.

Dallas?
As for the Mavs, they’re keeping it close to the vest, err, jersey. When asked if a new uniform was on it’s way, Mark Cuban told my main man Jeff Caplan of ESPNDallas.com “maybe.” Well, there’s photographic proof of rookie Dominique Jones rocking the new look.

hi, im a warriors fan, and i love the new logo, but the jersey looks bad with out orange. and why is the end of the sleeves yellow it should be gold! GOLDen state!!

  3. Cedric says:

The new uniforms are good in a way it means change, don’t know why Cavs change there uniform because the old one look better than this new set of uniforms they have now. The same goes for the Jazz, but its all good, teams usually do this to represent change in there organization with management or players so good luck to all.

  4. Nothing wrong with the old Wolves kit. But the other new ones are HOT. Best in order:
    Golden State
    Cleveland
    Clippers
    Wolves

  5. Scooter says:

    They are all horrible!

  6. Jared says:

Why did they pick that picture for the Jazz uniform? Fesenko looking like that? Bad choice but I like the new uniform.

    • Rick says:

that isnt fes, its gordon haywood

    • dc says:

      Jared, It’s Gordon Hayward

    • Brydon says:

      That’s not Fesenko…

    • Shaun2040 says:

@Jared that’s actually Gordon Hayward, the new Jazz rookie. I’ve been a Jazz fan since I was a kid and I liked the most recent Jazz uni’s the best, although I know there are a lot of people that thought the navy blue on baby/powder blue was to plain. The new ones are ok. I think it would’ve been sweet if they kept last years color scheme with the style of the new jerseys.

    what’s wrong???!!!

are we back in the 70′s???!!!

  8. jblakers42 says:

changing uniforms don’t equate to winning games…

the focus should be on becoming a better team than what your uniform looks like……

the best uniforms of all time…and this is coming from a LAKERS FAN

those black, red, white trimmed road pinstrip jerseys the BULLS broke out w/during their 72 game win season in 95-96, those unis were the bomb….lolll

  9. Pavol says:

computer graphics evolves, car design gets more futuristic year by year, cell phones look more flashy each year and for some reason NBA yerseys dont follow that trend. in my opinion going retro isnt a good choice and I have to agree with Scooter that maybe exept LA they all look terrible.

  10. Steve says:

hey jared that is not fesenko it is the rookie that they drafted. hayward or however you spell his name

  11. Gordon says:

    Hayward

  12. Adam says:

That’s not Fesenko in the Jazz uni. It’s Gordon Heyward at the rookie photo shoot.

  13. holy says:

Heh, Jared, this ain’t Fesenko, it’s their first round pick Gordon Hayward ;)
Nonetheless, the uniform is awesome – back to the roots. Classy!

  14. Tom says:

That Warriors jersey is horrible, same with the Jazz jersey. Cleveland and T-Wolves are good though

  15. Ziggy says:

    @jared

  16. young.dre says:

  17. Rich says:

    • M Josiah says:

One of my earliest childhood memories of NBA, is Charles Barkley dunking in that bad boy!
The white one was too nice!! The black or purple one worked too.
That and the Orlando Magic’s black pin-stripe jersey (the blue one wasn’t bad either!) are my all-time favourites.
Nah, for real Rich – I’m sending a you a Trans-Atlantic high-five all the way from London, England.
      Bless!

  18. Isaac says:

Cleveland’s uniform suxxxx it is really ugly

  19. Phil the Drill says:

actually, I think it’s a businessmove. You know, franchises will tell their fans: “Buy the brand-new jerseys!”
Sometimes another reason is that an important player leaves the organisation, so as an reaction the team changes the Jersey to symbolize a change in generell – which can be childish sometimes.
Recent examples: Philly (after Iverson), Cavs (after ‘Bron), Pacers (after Brawl), T-Wolves (after KG).
Some of these Jerseys are in some way ANNOYING oldschool; Boston Jerseys look cool tough, because they basically never changed.
You have to appreciate: Some current Jerseys look really cool, for example LA Lakers, Knicks, Spurs, Heat, Bulls. They shouldn’t be changed. Throwbacks are okay.

“The Warriors are bringing back a personal favorite by reincorporating the Bay Bridge” It was the Golden Gate Bridge in the old logo.

  21. Ben says:

Golden State, Jazz, good choices. I don’t think the GS one is as good as it could be, in terms of colours, but certainly with both of them they are returning to their best ever branding, and so that can only be a good thing. I don’t think either of them look dated or ‘retro’ – they are only retro in terms of the branding.

Cleveland on the other hand, is retro, and not in a good way. Their uniforms in recent years have been the best looking Cleveland have ever got, and I don’t think this is the best way of reacting to Lebron leaving. Thi tops are retro in a bad way.

I thought the clippers look was already their alternate (or something very similar). It’s classy though, but I do sort of prefer the old strip marginally. Actually, a mix of the two would be best. I like it when they mix the classic red white and blues (which no other team does).

Wolves and (unofficial) Dallas, there is nothing particularly interesting about old or new. Sometimes you just have to reinvent slightly to sell jerseys, but don’t want to mess with the basics I guess.

  22. Robbie J says:

    Golden States is Hideous. ahhaah

  23. Zzanzabar says:

As someone stated earlier, it is all about selling new jerseys. Home uniforms, away, retro, whatever the clubs need to generate cash (to pay those salaries) and they know devoted fans will shell out the ducats to buy them.

There is nothing wrong with that by the way, in fact I would wish that they could make a LOT of money this way rather than raising the admission prices. If you have a family of 6 then you had better take out a home loan.

  24. teo says:

I’m a warriors fan and i have to say that their other jerseys were way better. On the logo its gold and the trim around the sleeves does not match it at all. also the white stripes coming down the side of the jersey just makes it look utterly ridiculous. ugh

  25. Lakerfanatic24 says:

I think they are messing up with going back to the old jerseys like the 76ers did.

  26. Antoine says:

can someone tell me why there is no brand on the jersey?

dont tell me Champion or Reebok are going to do the jersey plz

  27. Golden State messed up big time wow.

  28. Bob in OKC says:

How about the Oklahoma City Thunder? We are changing our uniforms this season as well. C’mon NBA.com, get it together and write the whole story.

  29. UGLY UNIFORMS!!! says:

all of them are ugly!!!! terrible! the cavs had a nice uniform and then they started making crazy changes… the t’wolves dumped green but it looks like the uniform they had when KG was drafted!!! the clippers’ uniform has an ugly color and an ugly model… and the warriors’ uniform doesn’t make any sense… I agree with a lot of people here. These franchises need a modern look not a retro look…

  30. flazh says:

that aint fair……..heat should have one too..

  31. tenki says:

is that a Golden State uniform or a nightie?

  32. GSW9 says:

Love the Warriors new jerseys! Can’t wait to see them on the court this season
