Voting Season: Game Of The Year

Posted by Sekou Smith

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – We realize the start of the 2010-11 NBA season is just a couple of months away.

But before we dive headfirst into the newness here at the hideout, we wanted to take one last look at the best from last season. The best games, the best dunks, the best blocks, the best of everything. Thankfully, our friends in much higher places were already on the case.

And no, they don’t care about politricks or any of the partisan nonsense that goes on elsewhere. This is for basketball fans and hoopsheads worldwide. So don’t hesitate to cast your ballot.

The polls are open on NBA.com for the first category, the Game of the Year for the 2009-10 season. There are five regular season games and five playoff games on the ballot. And after all the votes have been tallied, NBA TV will air the results, in reverse order countdown style, Aug. 3.

As always, you are welcome to weigh in with your own opinions here (and judging from the way you let loose on the mid-summer rankings of the top eight teams in the Eastern and Western conferences, we’ll assume there will be no shortage of opinions). Make sure you highlight the hits, the misses and the games you just absolutely cannot believe were left off the ballot.

We’ve already decided which game will get our vote … sometimes it pays to save the best for last (check the recap video above).

But there are so many other worthy candidates on the ballot …

Surely, you remember this one:

And who could forget this one:

And how about this gem:

While we are well aware of the risk involved in trying to boil down roughly 2,800 games into a clear-cut Top 10 (those numbers crunchers at MIT wouldn’t even bother), the truth of the matter is, this is what we do around here.

After all, this is where amazing happens.

I know NBA wants to get as many playoff games and big games involving big teams, but they should include Cleveland at Utah, for me, this is the best game of the year, if you ignore the factor of the importance of the NBA final game 7. if you review the highlight of that game, you should know why, both teams have big lead many times, and it is a very close 4th quarter… of coz with the buzzer beater…. why it is not in there?

  2. JAZZone says:

I loved the game where the Jazz came back against the Cavs …from like 20 down in the third… with D-Will hurt and then Sundiata Gaines hit the buzzer-beater three to win.

  3. DooDooMouf says:

    Deron Williams is da best!!!!

Just found the recap of this one… Forgot how good it was – seriously, how was this missed?!?! Shame NBA.com

suprised the cavs vs utah game isnt there… that’s one of the best games ive ever seen.

cleveland were dominating the whole game, utah pulled a massive run and took the lead, lebron took the game over in the 3rd and 4th making strings of ridiculous shots, only to have the game slip away with cleveland missing clutch freethrows, kyle korver hitting an over the backboard shot, then finishing with Sundiata Gaines hitting the buzzer beater 3 in his first game out of the D League..

  6. Bosshog33 says:

Rajon Rondo is an average point guard in my eyes but he stands out because he is surrounded by superstars that make his job easy and there is no way that he can compete with Deron Williams or Chris Paul(easily the top 2 Point Guards in the NBA) and my vote for game of the year would have to be between the Cavs/Nuggets or UTAH/OKC.

  7. ahmad says:

Maxine, just to let u know Robin Lopez is out because of back problems. again.

  8. lakersdominate says:

By the way CHRIS PAUL HAS BETTER NUMBERS THAN RONDO HE LED THE LEAGUE IN STEALS 3 OUT OF THE LAST 5 YEARS unfortunately hes injured :(

  9. lakersdominate says:

I totall agree nash deserves more credit but im not sure nash could play as well as he used to without another selfish player like amare when he played with dallas he was really good with another somewhat unselfishplayer in nowitski but he became great with a player like amare plus the west is still tuff even though the east have more really great teams they have few good teams. one could say the west is full of above average teams with the defending champs being the exception

  10. beast@BBall says:

you need to add the chicago bulls double overtime win against the wizards

  11. matman says:

Cavs Nuggets gotta be # 2 we all know that game 7 wasnt just anything it wuz history so that gotta be #1

  12. Nico says:

I have a recommendation for the 3 NBA star who is now a free agent (Shaq, T-Mac & Iverson) why not the three of them put into 1 team? (Cleveland) Do you think this is a good idea?

    • Nick says:

Haha i thought about that as a laugh. Might be good if they went to an inexperienced team who are already headed to the lottery, like Minny

  13. TrueChosenOne says:

The NBA’s becoming a joke. GMs and coaches are getting fired every second, players are colluding and scheming how to take over the league, while David Stern sits on his fat behind waiting for “The Decision” to rack in the profits. Referee tampering has totally ruined this game. Players are treated like queens and go to the line whenever someone gets “roughed up” a bit. Stern, I hope you’re happy when ratings plummet and a lockout occurs. Celtics got robbed during game 7 of the Finals, that’s why the video is only 3 minutes long. The rest of the match was devoted to giving LA freethrows.

    • CAM says:

WOW are your really still on the whole lakers vs celtics game 7? get over it YOUR TEAM LOST….. and will never make it to the nba finals for the next decade or more and you know it…. the lakers were never gonna let the celtics celebrate on their floor and the celtics couldnt guard them so they starting fouling st8 up… open your eyes and watch the final quater…. they restorted to fouling and the refs didnt have any other choice … do you see the celtics complaining????? NO… so get your head out ur ass and know that the lakers are gonna 3 peat and you too will be a laker fan soon

YOU WILL HAVE TO STAY AFTER ODOM, TO KEEP HIM FROM GOING AWAY. HE ALSO NEEDS TO WORK ON FREE THROWS. LEARN HOW TO DRIVE RIGHT. EASY GUY TO KEEP OUT OF THE RED ZONE, IF THE OTHER TEAM HAS WATCHED VIDEOS OF ODOM. NEEDS MORE CONFIDENCE AT THE FREE THROW LINE. STAY OUT OF FOUL TROUBLE. USUALLY IS A LITTLE LATE ON A GUY DRIVING PAST HIM TOWARD THE GOAL. NEEDS TO WORK ON BEING ABLE TO SLIDE HIS FEET. HE GIVES UP ON A GAME EASY. BUT HE DOES HAVE HEIGHT, JUST HAVE TO STAY AFTER HIM TO STAY ON THE BOARDS AND NOT JUST STAND AND WATCH. ANYTHING LESS THAN 16 OUT OF 21 FREE THROWS IS NOT A GOOD FIT. CHANDLER IS A HARD WORKER, BUT NEEDS TO WORK ON HIS FREE THROWS ALSO. LOT OF THE MISSED FREE THROWS IS GETTING IN A HURRY ON THE FIRST ONE.
ODOM IS LIKE WALLACE SOME NIGHT GOOD OTHER NIGHTS, DOES NOT SHOW UP. NEEDS ENCOURAGEMENT OF THE IMPORTANCE OF EACH GAME.

I WOULD SAY, DURANT, ROSE, MAYO, BILLUPS, AND THE LOPEZ TWINS ALL OF THESE WILL SHOW UP EVER NIGHT. ALSO WESTBROOK. OUR TROUBLE YOU CANNOT WIN GAMES BEYOND THE THREE POINT LINE. WE NEED TO KEEP ALL OF OUR HEIGHT. YOU WILL SEE HEIGHT IN THE FOREIGN LEAGUES THAT WILL MAKE OUR HEIGHTS LOOK LIKE MIDGETS. BETTER KEEP BOTH LOPEZ TWINS. GIVE UP A SMALL GUY, BUT NEVER A BIG THAT HAS THE ABILITY TO KEEP TRYING.
MIKE, JERRY AND MIKE D. IT IS YOUR CHOICE. HOW MANY SMALL TEAMS WIN IT ALL?
BOTH LOPEZ’S,CHANDLER, ODOM, AND MAYBE WALLACE, WE MUST HAVE. LOPEZ TWINS EACH CAN HIT THEIR FREE THROWS, THEY CAN REBOUND AND THEY CAN BLOCK, THEY ARE YOUNG AND DO NO GIVE OUT AND NEVER QUIT TRYING. THEIR HEIGHT AND ROBIN’S LOOKS IS ENOUGH TO SCARE ANOTHER TEAM.
ODOM WILL HAVE TO HAVE A KICK IN THE PANTS EVER SO OFTEN TO KEEP HIM ACTIVE. OF ALL GIVE ME DURANT, ROSE, BILLUPS AND THE LOPEZ TWINS, AND WESTBROOK.

RANDO AND BILLUPS WILL NOT WORK TOGETHER, THAT IS A FACT. RANDO IS ME OR NO ONE. WE CANNOT HAVE THAT (WE HAD THAT WITH AMARE). RANDO CANNOT CHECK HIS EGO AT THE DOOR.

    • CAM says:

you make me laugh lol i can say 100% thats ur a SUns fan and you just want lopez to get sum experience since you guys lost amare lol and also you put sooo much emphasis on free throws.. NO … FREE THROWS DO NOT WIN GAMES… if the USA team plays good theres no need to win by free throws the game wont even be close … they;ll blow out these teams by 10 or 20.. and you say derrick rose aint selfish compared to rondo? when did you start watching the nba last season????

      • LLMN says:

Free throws kind of win games… Game 7 Lakers vs. Celtics seems to be a good example of that.

      • Nick says:

Well actually that game 7 disproves Maxines theory about Free Throws winning games. The Lakers missed 12 and the Celtics only missed 2 but the Lakers still won so it doesn’t matter so much if they’re not good at taking them as long as they get to the line often enough as all the point guards and wings will.

  15. Maxine says:

I would leave out Love before Robin Lopez, Love is a lazy player. He will not help the US team. I have doubts about Wallace as well. He is a hit or a miss player. Big,Big mistake if you do not take a shot blocker and also one that can make free throws. Give all of them a chance to see if they can make free throws. With our lack of height, we just may have to depend on a guy that can make Free Throws. FREE THROWS are just that FREE and they win games. Can one make them in the final few minutes to win the game? Ask Nash and Ray Allen. It takes guts. You have some that will fold if put in that position. Ask Billiups, he knows how important free throws are to winning a game. Controlling the boards has to be considered. Can you see that from some of your small guys? If he is at least 6′ 7″ tall he would be one of the 12. Lot can make 3pointers if left open, but can they fight under the basket? So important ask Charles Barkley. Take Robin Lopez. You will not regret that choice. WE are keeping two many that are more of a small forward/point guard. We will not win, unless we have some than get the ball under the goal and make the shot. period. Mike and Jerry Keep this comment, you will live to regret it if you cut out height for more than we need in short guys. Robin and Brooke Lopez know how to read off of each other also. We need those two guys.

  16. Maxine says:

The NBA team, must take as many “Bigs” as they can, in order to compete against foreign nationals. I wish the USA had not cut Robin Lopez, his height and determination, plus he can make free throws, as well as block, could have been a great help. Lot of those that are going, are NOT great free throw players. Could cost the US the game. FREE THROWS win games.
I am worried about Rando, he is not a team player at all. He is not good at the free throw line. Selfish with the ball.
I like S. Currey a very unselfish player, he tries real hard in any position and seems to know just where the ball is coming off of the board.
Derrick Rose, plays a good game and seems to fit in.
I would cut Gordan, Rando, McVee, and that guy with the funny name Ig——– I would add back Robin Lopez, he knows how to cut to the basket, and will be there always for a point guard to hit. Ask Nash. Big mistake if you do not take Robin Lopez. Just his ability to block shots is enough to take him with the team. It will really hurt our us team to knock out Robin Lopez. We do not have Amare, or do we have a D.Howard. So we need some 7 foot blockers.

    • CAM says:

NO WAY THAT RONDO IS A SELFISH PLAYER… HOW IS HE SELFISH IF HE DOESNT EVEN HAVE A JUMPSHOT? HE IS CURRENTLY THE BEST POINT GUARD IN THE NBA HANDS DOWN… HE HAS THE MOST STEALS.. HE AVERAGES 15 PPG AND 10 ASSIST AND 3 STEALS? TELL ME ANY OTHER POINT GUARD IN THE NBA WITH THESE NUMBERS

      • Nick says:

CP3 when not injured. Rondo can’t shoot so is no way the best PG although he is very good and unselfish. He always looks to get people open before his own score.

I’m a Laker fan and would absolutely love to have Rondo play for us!

Maxine, please don’t comment about things you know nothing about. Robin Lopez is still recovering from last seasons injury that kept him out half the playoffs.

    • LLMN says:

Rondo selfish? So you are a lakers fan I take it?

  17. Maxine says:

I wish luck to Amare, but sooner or later, Amare will have to give his performance credit to a Steve Nash. Without someone like Nash (unselfish P.G.), Amare will soon see the bench. Poor Amare he just cannot brag on anyone but himself. Must have been how he grew up.

  18. Maxine says:

Without a doubt, the game between the Suns and the Spurs has to be #1 video. Goran just a two year player stole the show. Most fun video to watch, the Spurs just looked at this young guy and probably said” where did that kid come from”?

Other than when Raja Bell clothe lines Kobe Bryant, this is the greatest video. Give it to the little Rookie. He deserves it. He plays so unselfish, gets along with all. Just seats on the Bench until Gentry calls his # and tell him, what he wants for him to do. He say OK.

    • bernard says:

hey maxine i agree with you about the game…. but the spurs drafted dragic but gave up thier rights to him where he was then taken by the suns as a successor to steve nash
