SALT LAKE CITY – For weeks now I’ve been listening to people yap about Kobe Bryant “losing a step” and looking “old” and “worn out.”
I didn’t see it last night.
Kobe looks like he’s aging just fine to me.
He’s scored 30 or more point in four straight playoff games, for those of you inspecting his game at this stage of his career, not bad for a broken down old man, huh?
Jazz rookie Wesley Matthews worked as hard trying to defend Kobe as anyone I can remember, and truth be told he did fantastic job on both ends (though that missed tip at the end of Game 3 will sting for a long time).
But I be willing to bet your next paycheck that Matthews would be the first to tell you that Kobe doesn’t seem a step slow, old or worn out.
He was at his playoff best in the late stages of the Lakers’ rousing Game 3 win over the Jazz, not only making a huge 3-pointer with 66 seconds to play to tie the game, setting up Derek Fisher‘s go-ahead 3 a little later. He was also facilitating for his teammates and displaying that trademark killer instinct that some of the young challengers to his throne have yet to master.
Kobe’s critics will have their chance to declare him old and on the down side one day, but not now.
Like I said, he’s aging just fine!

I agree completely. With the loss of speed, he’s making it up with skill and grace. For King lovers out there, LeBron needs to develop a very consistent jumper like every domineering presence in NBA history (Jordan anyone?) for him to get past the 30-years-old slump. LeBron is getting turn-around and set shots nicely, except his shot isn’t as trusted as say…Wade, Kobe, or Durant. Durant definitely doesn’t need a physical game with his drop-dead nice shooting, Kobe is complementing his decent jump shooting with an inside game, I can’t say that Wade will continue to dominate as injuries and fatigue has obviously worn him down, except he still has a nicer shot than LeBron at this point.

He use to crossover defenders in the lane and dunk the ball and hit 3′s all the time.
And when he hits 3 he don’t usually make them.

Anyone who saw Kobe this year before the finger and ankle injuries could see that he hasn’t really lost much of anything. He was averaging 30+ points on 50% shooting up until January.
He’s just now getting his legs back under him and its obvious that Kobe is still a top 2 player(and #1 in some situations)in this league.

Sometimes I wonder how someone can be so coldblooded. If Kobe missed that three to tie it up people would have been criticizing his bad shot selection but he unbelievably hit it, and what more can D-Fish do, the man is a top 10 clutch performer in the NBA. He doesn’t close out games but he’d be up there for one shot to go up in a game, he is that clutch.
It looks so far to be an LA Orlando final again….This time it will probably go further than 5 too

The only reason people say he was old is because he is injured. His back, knee, finger, etc. Once he starts feeling close to 100% We see what he can do. In the start of this season he was dominating. He was leading the league in scoring and he was clearly the early MVP candidate . Then the injuries started piling up, he tried to play through them but, they were affecting his game. Because of this people started saying he was getting old. He is not as good as he used to be. Lebron is the undisputed best player, etc. Kobes conditioning will make him be an effective player late into his 30′s. He just needs to re cooperate from these lingering injuries.

I agree, each time I see Kobe close out a game I’m impressed. Then he does it again and again, this guy is just dynamite even at his age: ice water runs through his veins, he loves tight situations and he never looks back. Pure shooter. Unlucky for Matthews though, missed a 3 ball then missed a tip-in…

I’ve been hearing all this nonsense too… its just a product of the MEDIA and the LEAGUE wanting to hand LBJ the baton so bad but as awesome as he is, so far he’s to Kobe as Dominique was to Jordan a freakish highlight reel that hasn’t proven to be a champion – (no knock on DW he’s one of my all-time favorites )…Kobe’s numbers weren’t as gaudy as LBJ’s, but when he was averaging 35 a game he was a pump now its “so amazing featuring Kanye ‘hey everybody look at me West’”, and he’s been battling injuries all season… another ring and a some rest this offseason and Kobe will be primed for his all-time scoring title run to close his incredible career out… love him or hate him he is still the best until Lebron proves he’s better… hopefully we’ll get the showdown in the finals!!!

I think people are so fooled by the game today, the high jumpers, the crossovers, the pic & roll, its all been done before. People forget that Kobe Bryant grew up in BasketBall, and now years of hating on his dominance in the early 2000′s people still hate on how he has mastered his craft, think about it they are all so quick to say LBJ is the greatest player in the game but where are his championships?, where are the rings? thats right he has none. if you ask me D Wade is a greater player than LBJ why you ask? in there first years in the NBA both D Wade & Bron got the chance to play for a title. but D Wade was the only one with the mental fortitude to capture that moment, not Bron Bron, since then Bron has had a much better team every year and still cant cut it, Kobe on the other hand has proven time and time again the these 5 – 7 year players are not on his level, thats like saying Shawn Kemp was better than Jordan because Kemp could jump out the building…. please. its nothing but over blown hype, now I hear them say KD35 is going to be the best player in the NBA in 3 more years which could be true but what about Melo, LBJ, Wade, Bryant, D Howard, are they all retiring in 3 years thats the only I see that possible. KOBE!!! he aint old, he just has a banged up back, a newly broken finger (dont forget he never got that surgery he needed to get on his shooting hand a couple summers ago due to the Olympics.) and he still is able to score over 30 points in every game this series. He aint old. he just needed rest and could use some more. watch him come back after a full summer of rest and average more then 28 a game with his career average numbers of 5 rebounds and 5 assists. he will bryant old. but right now, he’s killing any team that gets in his way of a champship with that vintage great instinct of doing what needs to be done, to win. and that might even improve with age.
I would say that He play more by IQ then his body now and use it well but He’s not fast like LBJ or young players but on the other hand i feel like He save his best for last.

Kobe’s performance is a testamonial shame to Charles Barkely who recently said that Kobe has aged and could not score 30 or more points nightly. Charles is just filled with a lot of hitred for Kobe to the extent that it has undermined his analytical objectivity and credibility as an analyst. SHAME ON YOU CHARLES!

i would have to agree, kobe aging does not bother me yet. He did a fantastic job at utah in game 3. He has shown countless times why he is still the best player in the league, bar none. It is funny to see how this entire year people are saying kobe is old, but the truth of the matter is that kobe has been in the league for 14 years and his various injuries is what has slowed him down this year. Had he not have had those injuries we would have seen a different record for the los angeles lakers, and possibly a different recipient for mvp.

Kobe Bryant has one of the highest B-ball IQ’s currently in the league, its like that one play where kobe dunked on Dwight Howard during his rookie season…..which was 6 years ago…not a very smart move even though he finished with an and1 (cuz kobe could have gotten a charge if Dwight Howard got his feet set outside the restricted area).
now if you look at the play where in the 09 playoff finals, you see kobe weave around D12′s hand without drawing body contact to avoid the block, and then score with the layup, That was a smarter move cuz then d12 would then have to make contact with kobe in order for him to make kobe miss and that would get d12 another foul. Also, the game against the knicks where kobe had a 61 pt. game. that pump fake and a reverse spin with the floater was an extremely smart move if you observe kobe’s footwork, speed (compared to wilson chandler who was guarding kobe), and the fact that kobe changed direction from heading to the strong side of the floor to taking the defense out of the picture and creating a wide open shot on the weak side of the court……

Sekou, you are one of the only sensible and astute columnists when it comes down to analyzing any aspect of the game and its players. I couldn’t agree more with you, Kobe is aging just fine. This is what I was struggling to argue with people during the Okhlahoma-City Thunder series, especially games 3 & 4, when people confused Kobe Bryant’s need for adjustment for “death of a competitor” (Roland Lazenby, Hoopshype.com). Kobe made the adjustment notwithstanding and taught a young team like OKC that it takes much more than speed, the league’s leading scorer, and an above the rim game to eliminate the defending champs. I’m just sick and tired of hearing that Kobe’s finally declining every time the Lakers lose or he has an off-night. No one seems to think anything less of LeBron James when he’s in the same predicament.
and remember the first half, where no other laker than Kobe was hit their stride, it’s this “old guy” with a broken finger in his shooting hand and played non-stop the past few years that carried them. Then the crew came in the second half (thanks Ron Artest, it was nice to see you play like that). There will always be those who will hate Kobe for the way he plays and those who’ll love him for it, but for a 31-year old straight out of high school phenom like him he’s just right. At 31 he ain’t yet relinquishing the throne just yet (that of best closer).

I never saw how Kobe’s critics can call him old. He’s been injured for nearly the whole season and he was still in the running for the league’s MVP (I don’t believe LeBron should’ve won so decisively, judges must be blind). there might be some games in the regular season wherein kobe looks a little bit worn out, but in the playoffs, kobe is still kobe, making tremendous play out there.. you may not notice him doing all the work because he got teammates to rely on. he made Pau and Bynum a lot better each year.. but when the game is on the line, watch kb24 doing his best.. i believe he still got more fuel left in his tank and that he could get a couple more rings… LAKERS repeat!!!!

After a game mastered by the duo Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol, the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Jazz again Jerry Sloan (111-96) and hoisted in Conference Finals. They gather the Suns after a long week of recovery.
Some fine movements of attack and a genuine desire to share the ball early in the game allowed them to take the lead. But Lamar Odom’s entry marked the beginning of the nightmare.

Lakers down by 2 with seconds to go (this was a few years ago), Smush Parker steals the ball and kobe floats in a two to tie the game. Game goes into overtime. Same deal there. Few seconds left, lakers down by one. Kobe’s elbow jumper goes in and Lakers win the game. So in fact Kobe had two buzzer beaters in one game. Now, its fine to say that Jordan might be better (though I do not agree) than Kobe because of his number of rings or MVPs, but never pass on lies as facts. Even those who do not like Kobe and think he’s no where near Jordan must admit he is an extremely talented basketball player.

Kobe is a Black Diamond! His leadership and shooting is too much for the Boston this year. I hope one day when i have money i ll see him playing before retired.
